Total energy-shaping control for mechanical systems via Control-by-Interconnection

Application of IDA-PBC to mechanical systems has received much attention in recent decades, but its application is still limited by the solvability of the so-called matching conditions. In this work, it is shown that total energy-shaping control of under-actuated mechanical systems has a control-by-interconnection interpretation. Using this interpretation, alternate matching conditions are formulated that defines constraints on the added energy, rather then the total closed-loop energy. It is additionally shown that, for systems that are under-actuated degree one with the mass matrix depending on a single coordinate, the kinetic energy matching conditions resolve to ODEs which can be evaluated numerically. Using this approach controllers are proposed for the benchmark cart-pole and acrobot systems.

Decentralized temperature and storage volume control in multi-producer district heating

Modern district heating technologies have a great potential to make the energy sector more flexible and sustainable due to their capabilities to use energy sources of varied nature and to efficiently store energy for subsequent use. Central control tasks within these systems for the efficient and safe distribution of heat refer to the stabilization of overall system temperatures and the regulation of storage units state of charge. These are challenging goals when the networked and nonlinear nature of district heating system models is taken into consideration. In this letter, for district heating systems with multiple, distributed heat producers, we propose a decentralized control scheme to provably meet said tasks stably.

Incorporating High-Frequency Weather Data into Consumption Expenditure Predictions

Recent efforts have been very successful in accurately mapping welfare in datasparse regions of the world using satellite imagery and other non-traditional data sources. However, the literature to date has focused on predicting a particular class of welfare measures, asset indices, which are relatively insensitive to short term fluctuations in well-being. We suggest that predicting more volatile welfare measures, such as consumption expenditure, substantially benefits from the incorporation of data sources with high temporal resolution. By incorporating daily weather data into training and prediction, we improve consumption prediction accuracy significantly compared to models that only utilize satellite imagery.
