We propose a citation index ν (``nu'') and show that it lies between the classical h-index and g-index. This idea is then generalized to a monotone parametric family (να) (α≥0), whereby h=ν0 and ν=ν1, while the limiting value ν∞ is expressed in terms of the maximum citation.
The fastICA method is a popular dimension reduction technique used to reveal patterns in data. Here we show both theoretically and in practice that the approximations used in fastICA can result in patterns not being successfully recognised. We demonstrate this problem using a two-dimensional example where a clear structure is immediately visible to the naked eye, but where the projection chosen by fastICA fails to reveal this structure. This implies that care is needed when applying fastICA. We discuss how the problem arises and how it is intrinsically connected to the approximations that form the basis of the computational efficiency of fastICA.
Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) is a popular computational method for likelihood-free Bayesian inference. The term "likelihood-free" refers to problems where the likelihood is intractable to compute or estimate directly, but where it is possible to generate simulated data X relatively easily given a candidate set of parameters θ simulated from a prior distribution. Parameters which generate simulated data within some tolerance δ of the observed data x∗ are regarded as plausible, and a collection of such θ is used to estimate the posterior distribution θ∣X=x∗. Suitable choice of δ is vital for ABC methods to return good approximations to θ in reasonable computational time. While ABC methods are widely used in practice, particularly in population genetics, study of the mathematical properties of ABC estimators is still in its infancy. We prove that ABC estimates converge to the exact solution under very weak assumptions and, under slightly stronger assumptions, quantify the rate of this convergence. Our results can be used to guide the choice of the tolerance parameter δ.
We consider the inverse problem of estimating an unknown function u from noisy measurements y of a known, possibly nonlinear, map G applied to u. We adopt a Bayesian approach to the problem and work in a setting where the prior measure is specified as a Gaussian random field μ0. We work under a natural set of conditions on the likelihood which imply the existence of a well-posed posterior measure, μy. Under these conditions we show that the {\em maximum a posteriori} (MAP) estimator is well-defined as the minimiser of an Onsager-Machlup functional defined on the Cameron-Martin space of the prior; thus we link a problem in probability with a problem in the calculus of variations. We then consider the case where the observational noise vanishes and establish a form of Bayesian posterior consistency. We also prove a similar result for the case where the observation of G(u) can be repeated as many times as desired with independent identically distributed noise. The theory is illustrated with examples from an inverse problem for the Navier-Stokes equation, motivated by problems arising in weather forecasting, and from the theory of conditioned diffusions, motivated by problems arising in molecular dynamics.
In application areas like bioinformatics multivariate distributions on angles are encountered which show significant clustering. One approach to statistical modelling of such situations is to use mixtures of unimodal distributions. In the literature (Mardia et al., 2011), the multivariate von Mises distribution, also known as the multivariate sine distribution, has been suggested for components of such models, but work in the area has been hampered by the fact that no good criteria for the von Mises distribution to be unimodal were available. In this article we study the question about when a multivariate von Mises distribution is unimodal. We give sufficient criteria for this to be the case and show examples of distributions with multiple modes when these criteria are violated. In addition, we propose a method to generate samples from the von Mises distribution in the case of high concentration.
A series of recent articles introduced a method to construct stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) which are invariant with respect to the distribution of a given conditioned diffusion. These works are restricted to the case of elliptic diffusions where the drift has a gradient structure and the resulting SPDE is of second-order parabolic type. The present article extends this methodology to allow the construction of SPDEs which are invariant with respect to the distribution of a class of hypoelliptic diffusion processes, subject to a bridge conditioning, leading to SPDEs which are of fourth-order parabolic type. This allows the treatment of more realistic physical models, for example, one can use the resulting SPDE to study transitions between meta-stable states in mechanical systems with friction and noise. In this situation the restriction of the drift being a gradient can also be lifted.
This article studies the effect of discretisation error on the stationary distribution of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). We restrict the analysis to the effect of space discretisation, performed by finite element schemes. The main result is that under appropriate assumptions the stationary distribution of the finite element discretisation converges in total variation norm to the stationary distribution of the full SPDE.
This article is devoted to the numerical study of various finite difference approximations to the stochastic Burgers equation. Of particular interest in the one-dimensional case is the situation where the driving noise is white both in space and in time. We demonstrate that in this case, different finite difference schemes converge to different limiting processes as the mesh size tends to zero. A theoretical explanation of this phenomenon is given and we formulate a number of conjectures for more general classes of equations, supported by numerical evidence.
In this text we study, for positive random variables, the relation between the behaviour of the Laplace transform near infinity and the distribution near zero. A result of De Bruijn shows that E(e−λX)∼exp(rλα) for λ→∞ and P(X≤ε)∼exp(s/εβ) for ε↓0 are in some sense equivalent (for 1/α=1/β+1) and gives a relation between the constants r and s. We illustrate how this result can be used to obtain simple large deviation results. For use in more complex situations we also give a generalisation of De Bruijn's result to the case when the upper and lower limits are different from each other.
