Infinite-dimensional algebras as extensions of kinematic algebras

Kinematic algebras can be realised on geometric spaces and constrain the physical models that can live on these spaces. Different types of kinematic algebras exist and we consider the interplay of these algebras for non-relativistic limits of a relativistic system, including both the Galilei and the Carroll limit. We develop a framework that captures systematically the corrections to the strict non-relativistic limit by introducing new infinite-dimensional algebras, with emphasis on the Carroll case. One of our results is to highlight a new type of duality between Galilei and Carroll limits that extends to corrections as well. We realise these algebras in terms of particle models. Other applications include curvature corrections and particles in a background electro-magnetic field.

A particle model with extra dimensions from Coadjoint Poincare' Symmetry

Starting from the coadjoint Poincaré algebra we construct a point particle relativistic model with an interpretation in terms of extra-dimensional variables. The starting coadjoint Poincaré algebra is able to induce a mechanism of dimensional reduction between the usual coordinates of the Minkowski space and the extra-dimensional variables which turn out to form an antisymmetric tensor under the Lorentz group. Analysing the dynamics of this model, we find that, in a particular limit, it is possible to integrate out the extra variables and determine their effect on the dynamics of the material point in the usual space time. The model describes a particle in $D$ dimensions subject to a harmonic motion when one of the parameters of the model is negative. The result can be interpreted as a modification to the flat Minkowski metric with non trivial Riemann, Ricci tensors and scalar curvature

Galilean free Lie algebras

We construct free Lie algebras which, together with the algebra of spatial rotations, form infinite-dimensional extensions of finite-dimensional Galilei Maxwell algebras appearing as global spacetime symmetries of extended non-relativistic objects and non-relativistic gravity theories. We show how various extensions of the ordinary Galilei algebra can be obtained by truncations and contractions, in some cases via an affine Kac-Moody algebra. The infinite-dimensional Lie algebras could be useful in the construction of generalized Newton-Cartan theories gravity theories and the objects that couple to them.

Newton-Hooke/Carrollian expansions of (A)dS and Chern-Simons gravity

We construct finite- and infinite-dimensional non-relativistic extensions of the Newton-Hooke and Carroll (A)dS algebras using the algebra expansion method, starting from the (anti-)de Sitter relativistic algebra in D dimensions. These algebras are also shown to be embedded in different affine Kac-Moody algebras. In the three-dimensional case, we construct Chern-Simons actions invariant under these symmetries. This leads to a sequence of non-relativistic gravity theories, where the simplest examples correspond to extended Newton-Hooke and extended (post-)Newtonian gravity together with their Carrollian counterparts.

Non-relativistic and Carrollian limits of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity

We construct the non-relativistic and Carrollian versions of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. In the second order formulation, there are no divergences in the non-relativistic and Carrollian limits. Instead, in the first order formalism there are divergences that can be avoided by starting from a relativistic BF theory with (A)dS2$\times\mathbb{R}$ gauge algebra. We show how to define the boundary duals of the gravity actions using the method of non-linear realisations and suitable Inverse Higgs constraints. In particular, the non-relativistic version of the Schwarzian action is constructed in this way. We derive the asymptotic symmetries of the theory, as well as the corresponding conserved charges and Newton-Cartan geometric structure. Finally, we show how the same construction applies to the Carrollian case.

Space-time Schrödinger symmetries of a post-Galilean particle

We study the space-time symmetries of the actions obtained by expanding the action for a massive free relativistic particle around the Galilean action. We obtain all the point space-time symmetries of the post-Galilean actions by working in canonical space. We also construct an infinite collection of generalized Schrödinger algebras parameterized by an integer $M$, with $M=0$ corresponding to the standard Schrödinger algebra. We discuss the Schrödinger equations associated to these algebras, their solutions and projective phases.

Symmetries of post-Galilean expansions

In this letter we study an infinite extension of the Galilei symmetry group in any dimension that can be thought of as a non-relativistic or post-Galilean expansion of the Poincare symmetry. We find an infinite-dimensional vector space on which this generalized Galilei group acts and usual Minkowski space can be modeled by our construction. We also construct particle and string actions that are invariant under these transformations.

Non-relativistic $k$-contractions of the Coadjoint Poincaré algebra

We study a class of extensions of the k-contracted Poincaré algebra under the hipotesis of generalizing the Bargmann algebra and his central charge. As we will see this type of contractions will lead in a natural way to consider the codajoint Poincaré algebra and some of their contractions. Among them there is one such that. considering the quotient of it by a suitable ideal, the (stringy) p-brane Galilei algebra is recovered.

The Symmetries of the Carroll Superparticle

Motivated by recent applications of Carroll symmetries we investigate the geometry of flat and curved (AdS) Carroll space and the symmetries of a particle moving in such a space both in the bosonic as well as in the supersymmetric case. In the bosonic case we find that the Carroll particle possesses an infinite-dimensional symmetry which only in the flat case includes dilatations. The duality between the Bargmann and Carroll algebra, relevant for the flat case, does not extend to the curved case. In the supersymmetric case we study the dynamics of the N=1 AdS Carroll superparticle. Only in the flat limit we find that the action is invariant under an infinite-dimensional symmetry that includes a supersymmetric extension of the Lifshitz Carroll algebra with dynamical exponent z=0. We also discuss in the flat case the extension to N=2 supersymmetry and show that the flat N=2 superparticle is equivalent to the (non-moving) N=1 superparticle and that therefore it is not BPS unlike its Galilei counterpart. This is due to the fact that in this case kappa-symmetry eliminates the linearized supersymmetry. In an appendix we discuss the N=2 curved case in three dimensions only and show that there are two N=2 theories that are physically different.

Conformal symmetry for relativistic point particles

In this paper we consider the conformal dynamics for a system of $N$ interacting relativistic massless particles. A detailed study is done for the case of two-particles, with a particular attention to the symmetries of the problem. In fact, we show that this analysis could be extended to the case of higher spin symmetries. Always in the two particle case a formulation in terms of bilocal fields is proposed. For a system of $N$ particles we consider two possible scenarios: i) action invariant under any permutation of the $N$ particles. This case corresponds to completely democratic interactions with each particle interacting with all the others. The action depends on $N-1$ dimensionless coupling constants. ii) By putting the particles along a one-dimensional lattice (open or closed) with nearest neighbor interactions, one obtains a model with only two-body interactions depending on a single dimensionless coupling. This model can be easily extended to the continuum case, obtaining a conformal string-like (closed or open) system.

Dynamical sectors for a spinning particle in AdS_3

We consider the dynamics of the motion of a particle of mass M and spin J in AdS_3. The study reveals the presence of different dynamical sectors depending on the relative values of M, J and the AdS_3 radius R. For the subcritical M^2 R^2-J^2 >0 and supercritical M^2 R^2-J^2<0 cases, it is seen that the equations of motion give the geodesics of AdS_3. For the critical case M^2R^2=J^2 there exist extra gauge transformations which further reduce the physical degrees of freedom, and the motion corresponds to the geodesics of AdS_2. This result should be useful in the holographic interpretation of the entanglement entropy for 2d conformal field theories with gravitational anomalies.

Dynamics of Carroll Particles

We investigate particles whose dynamics is invariant under the Carroll group. Although a single free such Carroll particle has no non-trivial dynamics (`the Carroll particle does not move') we show that there exists non-trivial dynamics for a set of interacting Carroll particles. Furthermore, we gauge the Carroll algebra and couple the Carroll particle to these gauge fields. It turns out that for such a coupled system even a single Carroll particle can have non-trivial dynamics.

Symmetries of the Free Schrödinger Equation in the Non-Commutative Plane

We study all the symmetries of the free Schrödinger equation in the non-commutative plane. These symmetry transformations form an infinite-dimensional Weyl algebra that appears naturally from a two-dimensional Heisenberg algebra generated by Galilean boosts and momenta. These infinite high symmetries could be useful for constructing non-relativistic interacting higher spin theories. A finite-dimensional subalgebra is given by the Schrödinger algebra which, besides the Galilei generators, contains also the dilatation and the expansion. We consider the quantization of the symmetry generators in both the reduced and extended phase spaces, and discuss the relation between both approaches.

The Non-Relativistic Superparticle in a Curved Background

Using a component formulation, we construct the supersymmetric action for a superparticle in a three-dimensional Newton-Cartan supergravity background and clarify its symmetries. Our construction proceeds by first constructing the superparticle in a flat background. Next, by boosting up the background symmetries, we replace in a first step the flat background by a Galilean supergravity background. In a second step the Galilean supergravity background is replaced by a Newton-Cartan supergravity background. We extend our results by adding a supersymmetric cosmological constant and compare the non-relativistic superparticle with the relativistic kappa-symmetric three-dimensional superparticle.

Dynamical sectors of a relativistic two particle model

We reconsider a model of two relativistic particles interacting via a multiplicative potential, as an example of a simple dynamical system with sectors, or branches, with different dynamics and degrees of freedom. The presence or absence of sectors depends on the values of rest masses. Some aspects of the canonical quantization are described. The model could be interpreted as a bigravity model in one dimension.

Non-linear Realizations, Goldstone bosons of broken Lorentz rotations and effective actions for p-branes

We consider the non-linear realizations of the Poincare group for p-branes with local subgroup SO(1,p)*SO(D-(p+1)). The Nambu-Goto p-brane action is constructed using the Maurer Cartan forms of the unbroken translations. We perform a throughout phase space analysis of the action and show that it leads to the canonical action of a p-brane. We also construct some higher order derivative terms of the effective p-brane action using the MC forms of the broken Lorentz transformations.

`Stringy' Newton-Cartan Gravity

We construct a "stringy" version of Newton-Cartan gravity in which the concept of a Galilean observer plays a central role. We present both the geodesic equations of motion for a fundamental string and the bulk equations of motion in terms of a gravitational potential which is a symmetric tensor with respect to the longitudinal directions of the string. The extension to include a non-zero cosmological constant is given. We stress the symmetries and (partial) gaugings underlying our construction. Our results provide a convenient starting point to investigate applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence based on the non-relativistic "stringy" Galilei algebra.

Space-time transformations of the Born-Infeld gauge field of a D-brane

Recently Gliozzi has shown that, under certain conditions, it is possible to derive the Dirac-Born-Infeld action for an abelian gauge field of a D-brane. Also, the action turns out to be invariant with respect to a non-linear realization of the full Poincaré group. A crucial role is played by the transformation properties of the gauge field under the non-linear realization. The aim of this note is to point out that these transformation properties are derived directly from the gauge fixing of the diffeomorphisms of the brane and the necessary compensating reparametrization when one performs a Lorentz transformation.

Deformations of Maxwell Superalgebras and Their Applications

We describe the Lie algebra deformations of D=4 Maxwell superalgebra that was recently introduced as the symmetry algebra of a kappa-symmetric massless superparticle in a supersymmetric constant electromagnetic background. Further we introduce the D=3 Maxwell superalgebra and present all its possible deformations. Finally the deformed superalgebras are used to derive via a contraction procedure the complete set of Casimir operators for D=4 and D=3 Maxwell superalgebras.

Deforming the Maxwell-Sim Algebra

The Maxwell alegbra is a non-central extension of the Poincaré algebra, in which the momentum generators no longer commute, but satisfy $[P_μ,P_ν]=Z_{μν}$. The charges $Z_{μν}$ commute with the momenta, and transform tensorially under the action of the angular momentum generators. If one constructs an action for a massive particle, invariant under these symmetries, one finds that it satisfies the equations of motion of a charged particle interacting with a constant electromagnetic field via the Lorentz force. In this paper, we explore the analogous constructions where one starts instead with the ISim subalgebra of Poincaré, this being the symmetry algebra of Very Special Relativity. It admits an analogous non-central extension, and we find that a particle action invariant under this Maxwell-Sim algebra again describes a particle subject to the ordinary Lorentz force. One can also deform the ISim algebra to DISim$_b$, where $b$ is a non-trivial dimensionless parameter. We find that the motion described by an action invariant under the corresponding Maxwell-DISim algebra is that of a particle interacting via a Finslerian modification of the Lorentz force.

Maxwell Superalgebra and Superparticle in Constant Gauge Backgrounds

We present SuperMaxwell algebra: an N=1, D=4 algebra with two Majorana supercharges, obtained as the minimal enlargement of superPoincare containing the Maxwell algebra as a subalgebra. The new superalgebra describes the supersymmetries of generalized N=1, D=4 superspace in the presence of a constant Abelian SUSY field strength background. Applying the techniques of non-linear coset realization to the Maxwell supergroup we propose a new kappa-invariant massless superparticle model providing a dynamical realization of the SuperMaxwell algebra.

SuperParticle realization of twisted N=2 SUSY algebra

We construct a pseudoclassical particle model associated to the twisted N=2 SUSY algebra in four dimensions. The particle model has four kappa symmetries. Three of them can be used to reduce the model to the vector supersymmetry particle case. The quantization of the model gives rise to two copies of the 4d Dirac equation. The kappa symmetries result to be associated to 4 TSUSY invariant bilinear odd operators who are null operators when a particular condition is satisfied. These operators are in correspondence one to one with analogous operators existing in the case of the N=2 SUSY algebra, making both cases 1/2 BPS.

A note on the Chevalley-Eilenberg Cohomology for the Galilei and Poincare Algebras

We construct in a systematic way the complete Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology at form degree two, three and four for the Galilei and Poincare groups. The corresponding non-trivial forms belong to certain representations of the spatial rotation (Lorentz) group. In the case of two forms they give all possible central and non-central extensions of the Galilei group (and all non-central extensions of the Poincare group). The procedure developed in this paper can be applied to any space-time symmetry group.

Deformed Maxwell Algebras and their Realizations

We study all possible deformations of the Maxwell algebra. In D=d+1\neq 3 dimensions there is only one-parameter deformation. The deformed algebra is isomorphic to so(d+1,1)\oplus so(d,1) or to so(d,2)\oplus so(d,1) depending on the signs of the deformation parameter. We construct in the dS (AdS) space a model of massive particle interacting with Abelian vector field via non-local Lorentz force. In D=2+1 the deformations depend on two parameters b and k. We construct a phase diagram, with two parts of the (b,k) plane with so(3,1)\oplus so(2,1) and so(2,2)\oplus so(2,1) algebras separated by a critical curve along which the algebra is isomorphic to Iso(2,1)\oplus so(2,1). We introduce in D=2+1 the Volkov-Akulov type model for a Abelian Goldstone-Nambu vector field described by a non-linear action containing as its bilinear term the free Chern-Simons Lagrangean.

Space-time Vector Supersymmetry and Massive Spinning Particle

We construct the action of a relativistic spinning particle from a non-linear realization of a space-time odd vector extension of the Poincaré group. For particular values of the parameters appearing in the lagrangian the model has a gauge world-line supersymmetry.{As a consequence of this local symmetry there are BPS solutions in the model preserving 1/5 of the supersymmetries.} A supersymmetric invariant quantization produces two decoupled 4d Dirac equations.

Vector Supersymmetry: Casimir operators and contraction from OSp(3,2|2)

We study some algebraic properties of the 'vector supersymmetry' (VSUSY) algebra, a graded extension of the four-dimensional Poincare' algebra with two odd generators, a vector and a scalar, and two central charges. The anticommutator between the two odd generators gives the four-momentum operator, from which the name vector supersymmetry. We construct the Casimir operators for this algebra and we show how both algebra and Casimirs can be derived by contraction from the simple orthosymplectic algebra OSp(3,2|2). In particular, we construct the analogue of superspin for vector supersymmetry and we show that, due to the algebraic structure of the Casimirs, the multiplets are either doublets of spin (s,s+1) or two spin 1/2 states. Finally, we identify an odd operator, which is an invariant in a subclass of representations where a BPS-like algebraic relation between the mass and the values of the central charges is satisfied.

BPS solutions of a D5-brane worldvolume in a D3-brane background from superalgebras

The BPS method is used to find BPS solutions of the worldvolume theory of a D5-brane in the near horizon geometry of a D3-brane. The BPS bound is interpreted in terms of the `maximally extended' D5 worldvolume supersymmetry algebra in the corresponding curved background, which is OSp(1|16). This algebra is an extension of the worldvolume superalgebra OSp(4^*|4). The analysis is generalized to the non-near horizon case.

Supersymmetric Baryonic Branes

We derive an energy bound for a `baryonic' D5-brane probe in the $adS_5\times S^5$ background near the horizon of $N$ D3-branes. Configurations saturating the bound are shown to be 1/4 supersymmetric $S^5$-wrapped D5-branes, with a total Born-Infeld charge $N$. Previous results are recovered as a special case. We derive a similar energy bound for a `baryonic' M5-brane probe in the background of $N$ M5-branes. Configurations saturating the bound are again 1/4 supersymmetric and, in the $adS_7\times S^4$ near-horizon limit, provide a worldvolume realization of the `baryon string' vertex of the (2,0)-supersymmetric six-dimensional conformal field theory on coincident M5-branes. For the full M5-background we find a worldvolume realization of the Hanany-Witten effect in M-theory.

BPS Bounds for Worldvolume Branes

The worldvolume field equations of M-branes and D-branes are known to admit p-brane soliton solutions. These solitons are shown to saturate a BPS-type bound on their p-volume tensions, which are expressed in terms of central charges that are expected to appear in the worldvolume supertranslation algebra. The cases we consider include vortices, `BIons', instantons and dyons (both abelian and non-abelian), and the string boundaries of M-2-branes in the M-5-brane.

Are Nonrenormalizable Gauge Theories Renormalizable?

We raise the issue whether gauge theories, that are not renormalizable in the usual power-counting sense, are nevertheless renormalizable in the modern sense that all divergences can be cancelled by renormalization of the infinite number of terms in the bare action. We find that a theory is renormalizable in this sense if the {\em a priori} constraints that we impose on the form of the bare action correspond to the cohomology of the BRST transformations generated by the action. Recent cohomology theorems of Barnich, Brandt, and Henneaux are used to show that conventionally nonrenormalizable theories of Yang-Mills fields (such as quantum chromodynamics with heavy quarks integrated out) and/or gravitation are renormalizable in the modern sense.

Anomalies and Wess-Zumino Terms in an Extended, Regularized Field-Antifield Formalism

Quantization of anomalous gauge theories with closed, irreducible gauge algebra within the extended Field-Antifield formalism is further pursued. Using a Pauli-Villars (PV) regularization of the generating functional at one loop level, an alternative form for the anomaly is found which involves only the regulator. The analysis of this expression allows to conclude that recently found ghost number one cocycles with nontrivial antifield dependence can not appear in PV regularization. Afterwards, the extended Field-Antifield formalism is further completed by incorporating quantum effects of the extra variables, i.e., by explicitly taking into account the regularization of the extra sector. In this context, invariant PV regulators are constructed from non-invariant ones, leading to an alternative interpretation of the Wess-Zumino action as the local counterterm relating invariant and non-invariant regularizations. Finally, application of the above ideas to the bosonic string reproduces the well-known Liouville action and the shift $(26-D)\rightarrow(25-D)$ at one loop.
