Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions Associated with the Quaternionic Fourier Transform

One of the fundamental problems in communications is finding the energy distribution of signals in time and frequency domains. It should, therefore, be of great interest to find the most energy concentration hypercomplex signal. The present paper finds a new kind of hypercomplex signals whose energy concentration is maximal in both time and frequency under quaternionic Fourier transform. The new signals are a generalization of the prolate spheroidal wave functions (also known as Slepian functions) to quaternionic space, which are called quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions. The purpose of this paper is to present the definition and properties of the quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions and to show that they can reach the extreme case in energy concentration problem both from the theoretical and experimental description. In particular, these functions are shown as an effective method for bandlimited signals extrapolation problem.

Can f(R) gravity contribute to (dark) radiation?

We discuss the possibility that suitable modifications of gravity could account for some amount of the radiation we observe today, in addition to the possibility of explaining the present speed up of the universe. We start introducing and reviewing cosmological reconstruction methods for metric $f(R)$ theories of gravity that can be considered as one of the straightforward modifications of Einstein's gravity as soon as $f(R)\neq R$. We then take into account two possible $f(R)$ models which could give rise to (dark) radiation. Constraints on the models are found by using the Planck Collaboration 2015 data within a cosmographic approach and by obtaining the matter power spectrum of those models. The conclusion is that $f(R)$ gravity can only contribute minimally to the (dark) radiation to avoid departures from the observed matter power spectrum at the smallest scales (of the order of $0.01$Mpc$^{-1}$), i.e., precisely those scales that exited the horizon at the radiation dominated epoch. This result could strongly contribute to select reliable $f(R)$ models.

Smoking guns of a bounce in modified theories of gravity through the spectrum of the gravitational waves

We present an inflationary model preceded by a bounce in a metric theory a lá $f(R)$ where $R$ is the scalar curvature of the space-time. The model is asymptotically de Sitter such that the gravitational action tends asymptotically to a Hilbert-Einstein action, therefore modified gravity affects only the early stages of the universe. We then analyse the spectrum of the gravitational waves through the method of the Bogoliubov coefficients by two means: taking into account the gravitational perturbations due to the modified gravitational action in the $f(R)$ setup and by simply considering those perturbations inherent to the standard Hilbert-Einstein action. We show that there are distinctive (oscillatory) signals on the spectrum for very low frequencies; i.e. corresponding to modes that are currently entering the horizon.

The energy spectrum of gravitational waves in a loop quantum cosmological model

We explore the consequences of loop quantum cosmology (inverse-volume corrections) in the spectrum of the gravitational waves using the method of the Bogoliubov coefficients. These corrections are taken into account at the background level of the theory as well as at the first order in the perturbations theory framework. We show that these corrections lead to an intense graviton production during the loop super-inflationary phase prior to the standard slow-roll era, which leave their imprints through new features on the energy spectrum of the gravitational waves as would be measured today, including a new maximum on the low frequency end of the spectrum.

The spectrum of gravitational waves in an f(R) model with a bounce

We present an inflationary model preceded by a bounce in a metric $f(R)$ theory. In this model, modified gravity affects only the early stages of the universe. We analyse the predicted spectrum of the gravitational waves in this scenario using the method of the Bogoliubov coefficients. We show that there are distinctive (oscillatory) signals on the spectrum for very low frequencies; i.e., corresponding to modes that are currently entering the horizon.
