Fixed-time synchronization for quaternion-valued memristor-based neural networks with mixed delays

In this paper, the fixed-time synchronization (FXTSYN) of unilateral coefficients quaternion-valued memristor-based neural networks (UCQVMNNs) with mixed delays is investigated. Instead of decomposition, a direct analytical method is proposed to achieve FXTSYN of UCQVMNNs using one-norm smoothly. Then apply the set-valued map and the differential inclusion theorem to handle discontinuity problems of drive-response systems. The novel nonlinear controllers together with the Lyapunov function are designed to achieve the control goal. Using the FXTSYN theory and inequality techniques, some criteria of FXTSYN for UCQVMNNs are given. Furthermore, the estimated settling time is obtained explicitly. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the correctness, effectiveness and practicability of the obtained theoretical results.

Quaternion Optimized Model with Sparse Regularization for Color Image Recovery

This paper addresses the color image completion problem in accordance with low-rank quatenrion matrix optimization that is characterized by sparse regularization in a transformed domain. This research was inspired by an appreciation of the fact that different signal types, including audio formats and images, possess structures that are inherently sparse in respect of their respective bases. Since color images can be processed as a whole in the quaternion domain, we depicted the sparsity of the color image in the quaternion discrete cosine transform (QDCT) domain. In addition, the representation of a low-rank structure that is intrinsic to the color image is a vital issue in the quaternion matrix completion problem. To achieve a more superior low-rank approximation, the quatenrion-based truncated nuclear norm (QTNN) is employed in the proposed model. Moreover, this model is facilitated by a competent alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) based on the algorithm. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can yield vastly superior completion performance in comparison with the state-of-the-art low-rank matrix/quaternion matrix approximation methods tested on color image recovery.

Quaternion Tensor Train Rank Minimization with Sparse Regularization in a Transformed Domain for Quaternion Tensor Completion

The tensor train rank (TT-rank) has achieved promising results in tensor completion due to its ability to capture the global low-rankness of higher-order (>3) tensors. On the other hand, recently, quaternions have proven to be a very suitable framework for encoding color pixels, and have obtained outstanding performance in various color image processing tasks. In this paper, the quaternion tensor train (QTT) decomposition is presented, and based on that the quaternion TT-rank (QTT-rank) is naturally defined, which are the generalizations of their counterparts in the real number field. In addition, to utilize the local sparse prior of the quaternion tensor, a general and flexible transform framework is defined. Combining both the global low-rank and local sparse priors of the quaternion tensor, we propose a novel quaternion tensor completion model, i.e., QTT-rank minimization with sparse regularization in a transformed domain. Specifically, we use the quaternion weighted nuclear norm (QWNN) of mode-n canonical unfolding quaternion matrices to characterize the global low-QTT-rankness, and the l1-norm of the quaternion tensor in a transformed domain to characterize the local sparse property. Moreover, to enable the QTT-rank minimization to handle color images and better handle color videos, we generalize KA, a tensor augmentation method, to quaternion tensors and define quaternion KA (QKA), which is a helpful pretreatment step for QTT-rank based optimization problems. The numerical experiments on color images and color videos inpainting tasks indicate the advantages of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art ones.

A Robust Color Edge Detection Algorithm Based on Quaternion Hardy Filter

This paper presents a robust filter called quaternion Hardy filter (QHF) for color image edge detection. The QHF can be capable of color edge feature enhancement and noise resistance. It is flexible to use QHF by selecting suitable parameters to handle different levels of noise. In particular, the quaternion analytic signal, which is an effective tool in color image processing, can also be produced by quaternion Hardy filtering with specific parameters. Based on the QHF and the improved Di Zenzo gradient operator, a novel color edge detection algorithm is proposed. Importantly, it can be efficiently implemented by using the fast discrete quaternion Fourier transform technique. From the experimental results, we conclude that the minimum PSNR improvement rate is 2.3% and minimum SSIM improvement rate is 30.2% on the Dataset 3. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms several widely used algorithms.

Quaternion higher-order singular value decomposition and its applications in color image processing

Higher-order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) is one of the most efficient tensor decomposition techniques. It has the salient ability to represent high_dimensional data and extract features. In more recent years, the quaternion has proven to be a very suitable tool for color pixel representation as it can well preserve cross-channel correlation of color channels. Motivated by the advantages of the HOSVD and the quaternion tool, in this paper, we generalize the HOSVD to the quaternion domain and define quaternion-based HOSVD (QHOSVD). Due to the non-commutability of quaternion multiplication, QHOSVD is not a trivial extension of the HOSVD. They have similar but different calculation procedures. The defined QHOSVD can be widely used in various visual data processing with color pixels. In this paper, we present two applications of the defined QHOSVD in color image processing: multi_focus color image fusion and color image denoising. The experimental results on the two applications respectively demonstrate the competitive performance of the proposed methods over some existing ones.

Weighted Truncated Nuclear Norm Regularization for Low-Rank Quaternion Matrix Completion

In recent years, quaternion matrix completion (QMC) based on low-rank regularization has been gradually used in image de-noising and de-blurring.Unlike low-rank matrix completion (LRMC) which handles RGB images by recovering each color channel separately, the QMC models utilize the connection of three channels by processing them as a whole. Most of the existing quaternion-based methods formulate low-rank QMC (LRQMC) as a quaternion nuclear norm (a convex relaxation of the rank) minimization problem. The main limitation of these approaches is that the singular values being minimized simultaneously so that the low-rank property could not be approximated well and efficiently. To achieve a more accurate low-rank approximation, the matrix-based truncated nuclear norm has been proposed and also been proved to have the superiority. In this paper, we introduce a quaternion truncated nuclear norm (QTNN) for LRQMC and utilize the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to get the optimization. We further propose weights to the residual error quaternion matrix during the update process for accelerating the convergence of the QTNN method with admissible performance. The weighted method utilizes a concise gradient descent strategy which has a theoretical guarantee in optimization. The effectiveness of our method is illustrated by experiments on real visual datasets.

A Unified Analysis of Linear Quaternion Dynamic Equations on Time Scales

Over the last years, considerable attention has been paid to the role of the quaternion differential equations (QDEs) which extend the ordinary differential equations. The theory of QDEs was recently well established and it has wide applications in physics and life science. This paper establishes a systematic frame work for the theory of linear quaternion dynamic equations on time scales (QDETS), which can be applied to wave phenomena modeling, fluid dynamics and filter design. The algebraic structure of the solutions to the QDETS is actually a left- or right- module, not a linear vector space. On the non-commutativity of the quaternion algebra, many concepts and properties of the classical dynamic equations on time scales (DETS) can not be applied. They should be redefined accordingly. Using $q$-determinant, a novel definition of Wronskian is introduced under the framework of quaternions which is different from the standard one in DETS. Liouville's formula for QDETS is also analyzed. Upon these, the solutions to the linear QDETS are established. The Putzer's algorithms to evaluate the fundamental solution matrix for homogeneous QDETS are presented. Furthermore, the variation of constants formula to solve the nonhomogeneous QDETs is given. Some concrete examples are provided to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed algorithms.

Constrained low-rank quaternion approximation for color image denoising by bilateral random projections

In this letter, we propose a novel low-rank quaternion approximation (LRQA) model by directly constraining the quaternion rank prior for effectively removing the noise in color images. The LRQA model treats the color image holistically rather than independently for the color space components, thus it can fully utilize the high correlation among RGB channels. We design an iterative algorithm by using quaternion bilateral random projections (Q-BRP) to efficiently optimize the proposed model. The main advantage of Q-BRP is that the approximation of the low-rank quaternion matrix can be obtained quite accurately in an inexpensive way. Furthermore, color image denoising is further based on nonlocal self-similarity (NSS) prior. The experimental results on color image denoising illustrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Low-rank quaternion tensor completion for recovering color videos and images

Low-rank quaternion tensor completion method, a novel approach to recovery color videos and images is proposed in this paper. We respectively reconstruct a color image and a color video as a quaternion matrix (second-order tensor) and a third-order quaternion tensor by encoding the red, green, and blue channel pixel values on the three imaginary parts of a quaternion. Different from some traditional models which treat color pixel as a scalar and represent color channels separately, whereas, during the quaternion-based reconstruction, it is significant that the inherent color structures of color images and color videos can be completely preserved. Under the definition of Tucker rank, the global low-rank prior to quaternion tensor is encoded as the nuclear norm of unfolding quaternion matrices. Then, by applying the ADMM framework, we provide the tensor completion algorithm for any order quaternion tensors, which theoretically can be well used to recover missing entries of any multidimensional data with color structures. Simulation results for color videos and color images recovery show the superior performance and efficiency of the proposed method over some state-of-the-art existing ones.

Quaternion Hardy Functions for Local Images Feature Representation

This paper is concerned with the applications of local features of the quaternion Hardy function. The feature information can be provided by the polar form of the quaternion Hardy function, such as the local attenuation and local phase vector. By using the generalized Cauchy-Riemann equations of local features, four various kinds of edge detectors are newly developed. The experiment results show that the amplitude-based edge detectors perform the envelope of test images while the phase-based edge detectors give the detail of the test images. Our proposed algorithms greatly outperform existing schemes.

Quaternion matrix regression for color face recognition

Regression analysis-based approaches have been widely studied for face recognition (FR) in the past several years. More recently, to better deal with some difficult conditions such as occlusions and illumination, nuclear norm based matrix regression methods have been proposed to characterize the low-rank structure of the error image, which generalize the one-dimensional, pixel-based error model to the two-dimensional structure. These methods, however, are inherently devised for grayscale image based FR and without exploiting the color information which is proved beneficial for FR of color face images. Benefiting from quaternion representation, which is capable of encoding the cross-channel correlation of color images, we propose a novel color FR method by formulating the color FR problem as a nuclear norm based quaternion matrix regression (NQMR). We further develop a more robust model called R-NQMR by using the logarithm of the nuclear norm, instead of the original nuclear norm, which adaptively assigns weights on different singular values, and then extend it to deal with the mixed noise. The proposed models, then, are solved using the effective alternating direction multiplier method (ADMM). Experiments on several public face databases demonstrate the superior performance and efficacy of the proposed approaches for color FR, especially for some difficult conditions (occlusion, illumination and mixed noise) over some state-of-the-art regression analysis-based approaches.

Solve the linear quaternion-valued differential equations having multiple eigenvalues

The theory of two-dimensional linear quaternion-valued differential equations (QDEs) was recently established (see Kou and Xia, SAPM). Some profound differences between QDEs and ODEs were observed. Also, an algorithm to evaluate the fundamental matrix by employing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors was presented in [Kou and Xia, SAPM]. However, the fundamental matrix can be constructed providing that the eigenvalues are simple. If the linear system has multiple eigenvalues, how to construct the fundamental matrix? In particular, if the number of independent eigenvectors might be less than the dimension of the system. That is, the numbers of the eigenvectors is not enough to construct a fundamental matrix. How to find the "missing solutions"? The main purpose of this paper is to answer this question. Furthermore, Caley determinant for Quaternion-valued matrix was adopted to proceed the theory of QDEs in [Kou and Xia, SAPM]. One big disadvantage of Caley determinant is that it can be expanded along the different rows and columns. This may lead to different results due to non-commutativity of the quaternions. This approach is not convenient to be used. The novel definition of determinant for Quaternion-valued matrix based on permutation is introduced to analyze the theory. This newly definition of determinant has great advantage compare to Calay determinant.

Edge Detection Methods Based on Differential Phase Congruency of Monogenic Image

Edge Detection Methods Based on Differential Phase Congruency of Monogenic Image Abstract: Edge detection has been widely used in medical image processing and automatic diagnosis. Some novel edge detection algorithms, based on the monogenic scale-space, are proposed by detecting points of local extrema in local amplitude, the local attenuation and modified differential phase congruency methods. The monogenic scale-space is obtained from a known image by Poisson and conjugate Poisson filtering. In mathematics, it is the Hardy space in the upper half-space. The boundary value of the monogenic scale-space representation is a monogenic image. In the monogenic scale-space, the definitions involving scale, such as local amplitude, local attenuation, local phase angle, local phase vector and local frequency (phase derivatives) are proposed. Using Clifford analysis, the relations between the local attenuation and the local phase vector are obtained. These study will be improved the understanding of image analysis in higher dimensional spaces. Experimental results are shown by using some typical images.

Facial Expression Classification Using Rotation Slepian-based Moment Invariants

Rotation moment invariants have been of great interest in image processing and pattern recognition. This paper presents a novel kind of rotation moment invariants based on the Slepian functions, which were originally introduced in the method of separation of variables for Helmholtz equations. They were first proposed for time series by Slepian and his coworkers in the 1960s. Recent studies have shown that these functions have an good performance in local approximation compared to other approximation basis. Motivated by the good approximation performance, we construct the Slepian-based moments and derive the rotation invariant. We not only theoretically prove the invariance, but also discuss the experiments on real data. The proposed rotation invariants are robust to noise and yield decent performance in facial expression classification.

Hypercomplex Signal Energy Concentration in the Spatial and Quaternionic Linear Canonical Frequency Domains

Quaternionic Linear Canonical Transforms (QLCTs) are a family of integral transforms, which generalized the quaternionic Fourier transform and quaternionic fractional Fourier transform. In this paper, we extend the energy concentration problem for 2D hypercomplex signals (especially quaternionic signals). The most energy concentrated signals both in 2D spatial and quaternionic linear canonical frequency domains simultaneously are recently recognized to be the quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions (QPSWFs). The improved definitions of QPSWFs are studied which gave reasonable properties. The purpose of this paper is to understand the measurements of energy concentration in the 2D spatial and quaternionic linear canonical frequency domains. Examples of energy concentrated ratios between the truncated Gaussian function and QPSWFs intuitively illustrate that QPSWFs are more energy concentrated signals.

Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions Associated with the Quaternionic Fourier Transform

One of the fundamental problems in communications is finding the energy distribution of signals in time and frequency domains. It should, therefore, be of great interest to find the most energy concentration hypercomplex signal. The present paper finds a new kind of hypercomplex signals whose energy concentration is maximal in both time and frequency under quaternionic Fourier transform. The new signals are a generalization of the prolate spheroidal wave functions (also known as Slepian functions) to quaternionic space, which are called quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions. The purpose of this paper is to present the definition and properties of the quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions and to show that they can reach the extreme case in energy concentration problem both from the theoretical and experimental description. In particular, these functions are shown as an effective method for bandlimited signals extrapolation problem.

Quaternion Fourier and Linear Canonical Inversion Theorems

The Quaternion Fourier transform (QFT) is one of the key tools in studying color image processing. Indeed, a deep understanding of the QFT has created the color images to be transformed as whole, rather than as color separated component. In addition, understanding the QFT paves the way for understanding other integral transform, such as the Quaternion Fractional Fourier transform (QFRFT), Quaternion linear canonical transform (QLCT) and Quaternion Wigner-Ville distribution. The aim of this paper is twofold: first to provide some of the theoretical background regarding the Quaternion bound variation function. We then apply it to derive the Quaternion Fourier and linear canonical inversion formulas. Secondly, to provide some in tuition for how the Quaternion Fourier and linear canonical inversion theorems work on the absolutely integrable function space.

Robust Signal Reconstruction Using the Prolate Spherical Wave Functions and Maximum Correntropy Criterion

Signal Reconstruction is one of the most important problem in signal processing. This paper proposes a novel signal reconstruction method based on the prolate spherical wave functions (PSWFs) and maximum correntropy criterion (MCC). The PSWFs are a kind of special functions, which have been proved having good performance in signal reconstruction. However, the existing PSWFs based reconstruction methods only consider the mean square error (MSE) criterion as the cost functions. The MSE criterion is sensitive to the non-Gaussian noise, since it is builded up by the Gaussian assumption. Therefore, for the impulsive noise or outliers, the MSE based reconstruction methods will lead to the large reconstruction error. The proposed MCC and PSWFs based robust signal reconstruction method can reduce the impact of large and non-Gaussian noise. The experimental results on the synthetic signals show that the proposed method can improve the MSE with notable gains in most cases.
