Edge Detection Methods Based on Differential Phase Congruency of Monogenic Image

Edge Detection Methods Based on Differential Phase Congruency of Monogenic Image Abstract: Edge detection has been widely used in medical image processing and automatic diagnosis. Some novel edge detection algorithms, based on the monogenic scale-space, are proposed by detecting points of local extrema in local amplitude, the local attenuation and modified differential phase congruency methods. The monogenic scale-space is obtained from a known image by Poisson and conjugate Poisson filtering. In mathematics, it is the Hardy space in the upper half-space. The boundary value of the monogenic scale-space representation is a monogenic image. In the monogenic scale-space, the definitions involving scale, such as local amplitude, local attenuation, local phase angle, local phase vector and local frequency (phase derivatives) are proposed. Using Clifford analysis, the relations between the local attenuation and the local phase vector are obtained. These study will be improved the understanding of image analysis in higher dimensional spaces. Experimental results are shown by using some typical images.

Facial Expression Classification Using Rotation Slepian-based Moment Invariants

Rotation moment invariants have been of great interest in image processing and pattern recognition. This paper presents a novel kind of rotation moment invariants based on the Slepian functions, which were originally introduced in the method of separation of variables for Helmholtz equations. They were first proposed for time series by Slepian and his coworkers in the 1960s. Recent studies have shown that these functions have an good performance in local approximation compared to other approximation basis. Motivated by the good approximation performance, we construct the Slepian-based moments and derive the rotation invariant. We not only theoretically prove the invariance, but also discuss the experiments on real data. The proposed rotation invariants are robust to noise and yield decent performance in facial expression classification.

Hypercomplex Signal Energy Concentration in the Spatial and Quaternionic Linear Canonical Frequency Domains

Quaternionic Linear Canonical Transforms (QLCTs) are a family of integral transforms, which generalized the quaternionic Fourier transform and quaternionic fractional Fourier transform. In this paper, we extend the energy concentration problem for 2D hypercomplex signals (especially quaternionic signals). The most energy concentrated signals both in 2D spatial and quaternionic linear canonical frequency domains simultaneously are recently recognized to be the quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions (QPSWFs). The improved definitions of QPSWFs are studied which gave reasonable properties. The purpose of this paper is to understand the measurements of energy concentration in the 2D spatial and quaternionic linear canonical frequency domains. Examples of energy concentrated ratios between the truncated Gaussian function and QPSWFs intuitively illustrate that QPSWFs are more energy concentrated signals.

Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions Associated with the Quaternionic Fourier Transform

One of the fundamental problems in communications is finding the energy distribution of signals in time and frequency domains. It should, therefore, be of great interest to find the most energy concentration hypercomplex signal. The present paper finds a new kind of hypercomplex signals whose energy concentration is maximal in both time and frequency under quaternionic Fourier transform. The new signals are a generalization of the prolate spheroidal wave functions (also known as Slepian functions) to quaternionic space, which are called quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions. The purpose of this paper is to present the definition and properties of the quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions and to show that they can reach the extreme case in energy concentration problem both from the theoretical and experimental description. In particular, these functions are shown as an effective method for bandlimited signals extrapolation problem.

Robust Signal Reconstruction Using the Prolate Spherical Wave Functions and Maximum Correntropy Criterion

Signal Reconstruction is one of the most important problem in signal processing. This paper proposes a novel signal reconstruction method based on the prolate spherical wave functions (PSWFs) and maximum correntropy criterion (MCC). The PSWFs are a kind of special functions, which have been proved having good performance in signal reconstruction. However, the existing PSWFs based reconstruction methods only consider the mean square error (MSE) criterion as the cost functions. The MSE criterion is sensitive to the non-Gaussian noise, since it is builded up by the Gaussian assumption. Therefore, for the impulsive noise or outliers, the MSE based reconstruction methods will lead to the large reconstruction error. The proposed MCC and PSWFs based robust signal reconstruction method can reduce the impact of large and non-Gaussian noise. The experimental results on the synthetic signals show that the proposed method can improve the MSE with notable gains in most cases.
