Time-dependent complete-active-space self-consistent-field method for atoms: Application to high-harmonic generation

We present the numerical implementation of the time-dependent complete-active-space self-consistent-field (TD-CASSCF) method [Phys. Rev. A, 88, 023402 (2013)] for atoms driven by a strong linearly polarized laser pulse. The present implementation treats the problem in its full dimensionality and introduces a gauge-invariant frozen-core approximation, an efficient evaluation of the Coulomb mean field scaling linearly with the number of basis functions, and a split-operator method specifically designed for stable propagation of stiff spatial derivative operators. We apply this method to high-harmonic generation in helium, beryllium, and neon and explore the role of electron correlations.

Wave chaos in the non-equilibrium dynamics of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

The Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) plays an important role in the description of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) at the mean-field level. The GPE belongs to the class of non-linear Schrödinger equations which are known to feature dynamical instability and collapse for attractive non-linear interactions. We show that the GPE with repulsive non-linear interactions typical for BECs features chaotic wave dynamics. We find positive Lyapunov exponents for BECs expanding in periodic and aperiodic smooth external potentials as well as disorder potentials. Our analysis demonstrates that wave chaos characterized by the exponential divergence of nearby initial wavefunctions is to be distinguished from the notion of non-integrability of non-linear wave equations. We discuss the implications of these observations for the limits of applicability of the GPE, the problem of Anderson localization, and the properties of the underlying many-body dynamics.

Transport through open quantum dots: making semiclassics quantitative

We investigate electron transport through clean open quantum dots (quantum billiards). We present a semiclassical theory that allows to accurately reproduce quantum transport calculations. Quantitative agreement is reached for individual energy and magnetic field dependent elements of the scattering matrix. Two key ingredients are essential: (i) inclusion of pseudo-paths which have the topology of linked classical paths resulting from diffraction in addition to classical paths and (ii) a high-level approximation to diffractive scattering. Within this framework of the pseudo-path semiclassical approximation (PSCA), typical shortcomings of semiclassical theories such as violation of the anti-correlation between reflection and transmission and the overestimation of conductance fluctuations are overcome. Beyond its predictive capabilities the PSCA provides deeper insights into the quantum-to-classical crossover.

Ab-initio calculations of charge exchange in ion-surface collisions: an embedded-cluster approach

We discuss the feasibility of the embedded cluster approach for it ab-initio calculations of charge exchange between ions and a LiF surface. We show that the discrete density of valence states in embedded clusters converges towards the continuum limit of the density of states in the valence band of an infinitely extended LiF surface. Screening of the holes that are left in the surface after electron transfer to the projectile plays an important role for the correct level ordering in the calculation of potential energy surfaces. We discuss to which extent the hole screening is taken into account by different levels of approximations which are customarily employed in quantum chemistry. The central result of the paper is the convergence of potential energy curves with respect to cluster size: Out of the increasing number of potential energy curves (converging towards a continuum for infinite cluster size), only a small number of states effectively interacts with the capture level of the projectile and determines the charge transfer efficiency.
