Instantaneous unboundedness of the entropy and uniform positivity of the temperature for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with fast decay density

This paper concerns the physical behaviors of any solutions to the one dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations for viscous and heat conductive gases with constant viscosities and heat conductivity for fast decaying density at far fields only. First, it is shown that the specific entropy becomes not uniformly bounded immediately after the initial time, as long as the initial density decays to vacuum at the far field at the rate not slower than $O\left(\frac1{|x|^{\ell_ρ}}\right)$ with $\ell_ρ>2$. Furthermore, for faster decaying initial density, i.e., $\ell_ρ\geq4$, a sharper result is discovered that the absolute temperature becomes uniformly positive at each positive time, no matter whether it is uniformly positive or not initially, and consequently the corresponding entropy behaves as $O(-\log(\varrho_0(x)))$ at each positive time, independent of the boundedness of the initial entropy. Such phenomena are in sharp contrast to the case with slowly decaying initial density of the rate no faster than $O(\frac1{x^2})$, for which our previous works \cite{LIXINADV,LIXINCPAM,LIXIN3DK} show that the uniform boundedness of the entropy can be propagated for all positive time and thus the temperature decays to zero at the far field. These give a complete answer to the problem concerning the propagation of uniform boundedness of the entropy for the heat conductive ideal gases and, in particular, show that the algebraic decay rate $2$ of the initial density at the far field is sharp for the uniform boundedness of the entropy. The tools to prove our main results are based on some scaling transforms, including the Kelvin transform, and a Hopf type lemma for a class of degenerate equations with possible unbounded coefficients.

Global well-posedness of $z$-weak solutions to the primitive equations without vertical diffusivity

In this paper, we consider the initial boundary value problem in a cylindrical domain to the three dimensional primitive equations with full eddy viscosity in the momentum equations but with only horizontal eddy diffusivity in the temperature equation. Global well-posedness of $z$-weak solution is established for any such initial datum that itself and its vertical derivative belong to $L^2$. This not only extends the results in \cite{Cao5} from the spatially periodic case to general cylindrical domains but also weakens the regularity assumptions on the initial data which are required to be $H^2$ there.

Entropy-bounded solutions to the one-dimensional heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations with far field vacuum

In the presence of vacuum, the physical entropy for polytropic gases behaves singularly and it is thus a challenge to study its dynamics. It is shown in this paper that the boundedness of the entropy can be propagated up to any finite time provided that the initial vacuum presents only at far fields with sufficiently slow decay of the initial density. More precisely, for the Cauchy problem of the one dimensional heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations, the global well-posedness of strong solutions and uniform boundedness of the corresponding entropy are established, as long as the initial density vanishes only at far fields with a rate no more than $O(\frac{1}{x^2})$. The main tools of proving the uniform boundedness of the entropy are some singularly weighted energy estimates carefully designed for the heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations and an elaborate De Giorgi type iteration technique for some classes of degenerate parabolic equations. The De Giorgi type iterations are carried out to different equations in establishing the lower and upper bounds of the entropy.

Global Well-posedness for the Primitive Equations Coupled to Nonlinear Moisture Dynamics with Phase Changes

In this work we study the global solvability of the primitive equations for the atmosphere coupled to moisture dynamics with phase changes for warm clouds, where water is present in the form of water vapor and in the liquid state as cloud water and rain water. This moisture model contains closures for the phase changes condensation and evaporation, as well as the processes of autoconversion of cloud water into rainwater and the collection of cloud water by the falling rain droplets. It has been used by Klein and Majda in \cite{KM} and corresponds to a basic form of the bulk microphysics closure in the spirit of Kessler \cite{Ke} and Grabowski and Smolarkiewicz \cite{GS}. The moisture balances are strongly coupled to the thermodynamic equation via the latent heat associated to the phase changes. In \cite{HKLT} we assumed the velocity field to be given and proved rigorously the global existence and uniqueness of uniformly bounded solutions of the moisture balances coupled to the thermodynamic equation. In this paper we present the solvability of a full moist atmospheric flow model, where the moisture model is coupled to the primitive equations of atmospherical dynamics governing the velocity field. For the derivation of a priori estimates for the velocity field we thereby use the ideas of Cao and Titi \cite{CT}, who succeeded in proving the global solvability of the primitive equations.

Global small solutions of heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations with vacuum: smallness on scaling invariant quantity

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum and with vacuum far field. Global well-posedness of strong solutions is established under the assumption, among some other regularity and compatibility conditions, that the scaling invariant quantity $\|ρ_0\|_\infty(\|ρ_0\|_3+\|ρ_0\|_\infty^2\|\sqrt{ρ_0}u_0\|_2^2)(\|\nabla u_0\|_2^2+\|ρ_0\|_\infty\|\sqrt{ρ_0}E_0\|_2^2)$ is sufficiently small, with the smallness depending only on the parameters $R, γ, μ, λ,$ and $κ$ in the system. The total mass can be either finite or infinite.

Global well-posedness of non-heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations in 1D

In this paper, the initial-boundary value problem of the 1D full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with positive constant viscosity but with zero heat conductivity is considered. Global well-posedness is established for any $H^1$ initial data. The initial density is required to be nonnegative, which is not necessary to be uniformly away from vacuum. This not only generalizes the well-known result of Kazhikhov--Shelukhin (Kazhikhov, A.~V.; Shelukhin, V.~V.: \emph{Unique global solution with respect to time of initial boundary value problems for one-dimensional equations of a viscous gas}, J.\,Appl.\,Math.\,Mech., \bf41 \rm(1977), 273--282.) from the heat conductive case to the non-heat conductive case, and the initial vacuum is allowed.

Local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with nonnegative density

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem to the nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Local strong solutions are established, for any initial data $(ρ_0, u_0)\in (W^{1,γ} \cap L^\infty)\times H_{0,σ}^1$, with $γ>1$, and if $γ\geq2$, then the strong solution is unique. The initial density is allowed to be nonnegative, and in particular, the initial vacuum is allowed. The assumption on the initial data is weaker than the previous widely used one that $(ρ_0, u_0)\in (H^1 \cap L^\infty )\times(H_{0,σ}^1 \cap H^2)$, and no compatibility condition is required.

Recent Advances Concerning Certain Class of Geophysical Flows

This paper is devoted to reviewing several recent developments concerning certain class of geophysical models, including the primitive equations (PEs) of atmospheric and oceanic dynamics and a tropical atmosphere model. The PEs for large-scale oceanic and atmospheric dynamics are derived from the Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the heat convection by adopting the Boussinesq and hydrostatic approximations, while the tropical atmosphere model considered here is a nonlinear interaction system between the barotropic mode and the first baroclinic mode of the tropical atmosphere with moisture. We are mainly concerned with the global well-posedness of strong solutions to these systems, with full or partial viscosity, as well as certain singular perturbation small parameter limits related to these systems, including the small aspect ratio limit from the Navier-Stokes equations to the PEs, and a small relaxation-parameter in the tropical atmosphere model. These limits provide a rigorous justification to the hydrostatic balance in the PEs, and to the relaxation limit of the tropical atmosphere model, respectively. Some conditional uniqueness of weak solutions, and the global well-posedness of weak solutions with certain class of discontinuous initial data, to the PEs are also presented.

Strong solutions to the 3D primitive equations with only horizontal dissipation: near $H^1$ initial data

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of the three-dimensional primitive equations for oceanic and atmospheric dynamics with only horizontal viscosity and horizontal diffusivity. We establish the local, in time, well-posedness of strong solutions, for any initial data $(v_0, T_0)\in H^1$, by using the local, in space, type energy estimate. We also establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions for this system, with any initial data $(v_0, T_0)\in H^1\cap L^\infty$, such that $\partial_zv_0\in L^m$, for some $m\in(2,\infty)$, by using the logarithmic type anisotropic Sobolev inequality and a logarithmic type Gronwall inequality. This paper improves the previous results obtained in [Cao, C.; Li, J.; Titi, E.S.: Global well-posedness of the 3D primitive equations with only horizontal viscosity and diffusivity, Comm. Pure Appl.Math., Vol. 69 (2016), 1492-1531.], where the initial data $(v_0, T_0)$ was assumed to have $H^2$ regularity.

A Tropical Atmosphere Model with Moisture: Global Well-posedness and Relaxation Limit

In this paper, we consider a nonlinear interaction system between the barotropic mode and the first baroclinic mode of the tropical atmosphere with moisture; that was derived in [Frierson, D.M.W.; Majda, A.J.; Pauluis, O.M.: Dynamics of precipitation fronts in the tropical atmosphere: a novel relaxation limit, Commum. Math. Sci., 2 (2004), 591-626.] We establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to this system, with initial data in $H^1$, for each fixed convective adjustment relaxation time parameter $\varepsilon>0$. Moreover, if the initial data enjoy slightly more regularity than $H^1$, then the unique strong solution depends continuously on the initial data. Furthermore, by establishing several appropriate $\varepsilon$-independent estimates, we prove that the system converges to a limiting system, as the relaxation time parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, with convergence rate of the order $O(\sqrt\varepsilon)$. Moreover, the limiting system has a unique global strong solution, for any initial data in $H^1$, and such unique strong solution depends continuously on the initial data if the the initial data posses slightly more regularity than $H^1$. Notably, this solves the VISCOUS VERSION of an open problem proposed in the above mentioned paper of Frierson, Majda and Pauluis.

Existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to viscous primitive equations for certain class of discontinuous initial data

We establish some conditional uniqueness of weak solutions to the viscous primitive equations, and as an application, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of weak solutions, with the initial data taken as small $L^\infty$ perturbations of functions in the space $X=\left\{v\in (L^6(Ω))^2|\partial_zv\in (L^2(Ω))^2\right\}$; in particular, the initial data are allowed to be discontinuous. Our result generalizes in a uniform way the result on the uniqueness of weak solutions with continuous initial data and that of the so-called $z$-weak solutions.

Global well-posedness of strong solutions to a tropical climate model

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the TROPIC CLIMATE MODEL derived by Frierson-Majda-Pauluis in [Comm. Math. Sci, Vol. 2 (2004)] which is a coupled system of the barotropic and the first baroclinic modes of the velocity and the typical midtropospheric temperature. The system considered in this paper has viscosities in the momentum equations, but no diffusivity in the temperature equation. We establish here the global well-posedness of strong solutions to this model. In proving the global existence of strong solutions, to overcome the difficulty caused by the absence of the diffusivity in the temperature equation, we introduce a new velocity $w$ (called the pseudo baroclinic velocity), which has more regularities than the original baroclinic mode of the velocity. An auxiliary function $ϕ$, which looks like the effective viscous flux for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, is also introduced to obtain the $L^\infty$ bound of the temperature. Regarding the uniqueness, we use the idea of performing suitable energy estimates at level one order lower than the natural basic energy estimates for the system.

Global well-posedness of the 2D Boussinesq equations with vertical dissipation

We prove the global well-posedness of the two-dimensional Boussinesq equations with only vertical dissipation. The initial data $(u_0,θ_0)$ are required to be only in the space $X=\{f\in L^2(\mathbb R^2)\,|\,\partial_xf\in L^2(\mathbb R^2)\}$, and thus our result generalizes that in [C. Cao, J. Wu, Global regularity for the two-dimensional anisotropic Boussinesq equations with vertical dissipation, Arch. Rational Mech. Anal., Vol. 208 (2013), 985-1004], where the initial data are assumed to be in $H^2(\mathbb R^2)$. The assumption on the initial data is at the minimal level that is required to guarantee the uniqueness of the solutions. A logarithmic type limiting Sobolev embedding inequality for the $L^\infty(\mathbb R^2)$ norm, in terms of anisotropic Sobolev norms, and a logarithmic type Gronwall inequality are established to obtain the global in time a priori estimates, which guarantee the local solution to be a global one.

Local well-posedness of strong solutions to density-dependent liquid crystal system

In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem to the density-dependent liquid crystal system in $\mathbb R^3$. We establish the local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to this system. In order to overcome the difficulties caused by the high order coupling terms, a biharmonic regularization of the system, as an auxiliary system, is introduced, and we make full use of the intrinsic cancellation properties between the high order coupling terms.

Global Strong Solutions to Incompressible Ericksen-Leslie System in $\mathbb R^3$

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the Ericksen-Leslie system of liquid crystals in $\mathbb R^3$. Global well-posedness of strong solutions are obtained under the condition that the product of $\|u_0\|_2+\|\nabla d_0\|_2$ and $\|\nabla u_0\|_2+\|\nabla^2d_0\|_2$ is suitably small. This result can be viewed as a supplement to the local existence and blow up criteria discussed in \cite{Hong1}.

Global Well-posedness of the 3D Primitive Equations with Only Horizontal Viscosity and Diffusion

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of the 3D primitive equations for planetary oceanic and atmospheric dynamics with only horizontal eddy viscosity in the horizontal momentum equations and only horizontal diffusion in the temperature equation. Global well-posedness of strong solution is established for any $H^2$ initial data. An $N$-dimensional logarithmic Sobolev embedding inequality, which bounds the $L^\infty$ norm in terms of the $L^q$ norms up to a logarithm of the $L^p$-norm, for $p>N$, of the first order derivatives, and a system version of the classic Gronwall inequality are exploited to establish the required a priori $H^2$ estimates for the global regularity.

On the uniqueness of weak solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie liquid crystal model in $\mathbb R^2$

This paper concerns the uniqueness of weak solutions to the Cauchy problem to the Ericksen-Leslie system of liquid crystal models in $\mathbb R^2$, with both general Leslie stress tensors and general Oseen-Frank density. It is shown here that such a system admits a unique weak solution provided that the Frank coefficients are close to some positive constant, which solves an interesting open problem. One of the main ideas of our proof is to perform suitable energy estimates at level one order lower than the natural basic energy estimates for the Ericksen-Leslie system.

Blow-up criteria of strong solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\Bbb R^3$

In this paper, we establish the local well-posedness and blow-up criteria of strong solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\Bbb R^3$ for the well-known Oseen-Frank model. The local existence of strong solutions to liquid crystal flows is obtained by using the Ginzburg-Landau approximation approach to guarantee the constraint that the direction vector of the fluid is of length one. We establish four kinds of blow-up criteria, including (i) the Serrin type; (ii) the Beal-Kato-Majda type; (iii) the mixed type, i.e., Serrin type condition for one field and Beal-Kato-Majda type condition on the other one; (iv) a new one, which characterizes the maximal existence time of the strong solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in terms of Serrin type norms of the strong solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau approximate system. Furthermore, we also prove that the strong solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau approximate system converge to the strong solution of the Ericksen-Leslie system up to the maximal existence time.

Global Existence of Strong Solutions to Incompressible MHD

We establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the initial boundary value problem for incompressible MHD equations in a bounded smooth domain of three spatial dimensions with initial density being allowed to have vacuum, in particular, the initial density can vanish in a set of positive Lebessgue measure. More precisely, under the assumption that the production of the quantities $|\sqrtρ_0u_0|_{L^2(Ω)}^2+|H_0|_{L^2(Ω)}^2$ and $|\nabla u_0|_{L^2(Ω)}^2+|\nabla H_0|_{L^2(Ω)}^2$ is suitably small, with the smallness depending only on the bound of the initial density and the domain, we prove that there is a unique strong solution to the Dirichlet problem of the incompressible MHD system.

Global Strong and Weak Solutions to Nematic Liquid Crystal Flow in Two Dimensions

We consider the strong and weak solutions to the Cauchy problem of the inhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal equations in two dimensions. We first establish the local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions by using the standard domain expanding method, and then extend such local strong solution to be a global one, provided the initial density is away from vacuum and the initial direction field satisfies some geometric structure. The size of the initial data can be large. Based on such global existence results of strong solutions, by using compactness argument, we obtain the global existence of weak solutions with nonnegative initial density.

Global Weak Solutions to Non-isothermal Nematic Liquid Crystals in 2D

In this paper, we prove the global existence of weak solutions to the non-isothermal nematic liquid crystal system on $\mathbb T^2$, based on a new approximate system which is different from the classical Ginzburg-Landau approximation. Local energy inequalities are employed to recover the estimates on the second order spacial derivatives of the director fields locally in time, which cannot be derived from the basic energy balance. It is shown that these weak solutions conserve the total energy and while the kinetic and potential energies transfer to the heat energy precisely. Furthermore, it is also established that these weak solutions have at most finite many singular times at which the energy concentration occurs, and as a result, the temperature must increase suddenly at each singular time on some part of $\mathbb T^2$.

Liquid Crystal Equations with Infinite Energy Local Well-posedness and Blow Up Criterion

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem of the incompressible liquid crystal equations in $n$ dimensions. We prove the local well-posedness of mild solutions to the liquid crystal equations with $L^\infty$ initial data, in particular, the initial energy may be infinite. We prove that the solutions are smooth with respect to the space variables away from the initial time. Based on this regularity estimate, we employ the blow up argument and Liouville type theorems to establish vorticity direction type blow up criterions for the type I mild solutions established in the present paper.

Global Strong Solutions to Incompressible Nematic Liquid Crystal Flow

In this paper, we consider the Dirichlet problem of inhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal equations in bounded smooth domains of two or three dimensions. We prove the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions with initial data being of small norm but allowed to have vacuum. More precisely, for two dimensional case, we only require that the basic energy $|\sqrt{ρ_0}u_0|_{L^2}^2+|\nabla d_0|_{L^2}^2$ is small, while for three dimensional case, we ask for the smallness of the production of the basic energy and the quantity $|\nabla u_0|_{L^2}^2+|\nabla^2d_0|_{L^2}^2$. Our efforts mainly center on the establishment of the time independent a priori estimate on local strong solutions. Taking advantage of such a priori estimate, we extend the local strong solution to the whole time, obtaining the global strong solution.
