NTIRE 2022 Challenge on Efficient Super-Resolution: Methods and Results

This paper reviews the NTIRE 2022 challenge on efficient single image super-resolution with focus on the proposed solutions and results. The task of the challenge was to super-resolve an input image with a magnification factor of $\times$4 based on pairs of low and corresponding high resolution images. The aim was to design a network for single image super-resolution that achieved improvement of efficiency measured according to several metrics including runtime, parameters, FLOPs, activations, and memory consumption while at least maintaining the PSNR of 29.00dB on DIV2K validation set. IMDN is set as the baseline for efficiency measurement. The challenge had 3 tracks including the main track (runtime), sub-track one (model complexity), and sub-track two (overall performance). In the main track, the practical runtime performance of the submissions was evaluated. The rank of the teams were determined directly by the absolute value of the average runtime on the validation set and test set. In sub-track one, the number of parameters and FLOPs were considered. And the individual rankings of the two metrics were summed up to determine a final ranking in this track. In sub-track two, all of the five metrics mentioned in the description of the challenge including runtime, parameter count, FLOPs, activations, and memory consumption were considered. Similar to sub-track one, the rankings of five metrics were summed up to determine a final ranking. The challenge had 303 registered participants, and 43 teams made valid submissions. They gauge the state-of-the-art in efficient single image super-resolution.

The roles of quantum coherence in thermodynamic processes

Quantum coherence associated with the superpositions of two different sets of eigenbasis vectors has been regarded as essential in thermodynamics. It is found that coherent factors can be determined by writing observables as an expansion in the basis vectors of the systemic density operator and Hamiltonian. We reveal the roles of coherence in finite-time thermodynamic processes, such as the spin precession and the spontaneous emission of a photon. Results show that the work in the spin precession and the heat in the spontaneous emission process are mainly generated by coherence.

Large-eddy simulations of marine boundary-layer clouds associated with cold air outbreaks during the ACTIVATE campaign-part 1: Case setup and sensitivities to large-scale forcings

Large-eddy simulation (LES) is able to capture key boundary-layer (BL) turbulence and cloud processes. Yet, large-scale forcing and surface turbulent fluxes of sensible and latent heat are often poorly prescribed for LES simulations. We derive these quantities from measurements and reanalysis obtained for two cold air outbreak (CAO) events during Phase I of the Aerosol Cloud meTeorology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE) in February-March 2020. We study the two contrasting CAO cases by performing LES and test the sensitivity of BL structure and clouds to large-scale forcings and turbulent heat fluxes. Profiles of atmospheric state and large-scale divergence and surface turbulent heat fluxes obtained from the reanalysis data ERA5 agree reasonably well with those derived from ACTIVATE field measurements for both cases at the sampling time and location. Therefore, we adopt the time evolving heat fluxes, wind and advective tendencies profiles from ERA5 reanalysis data to drive the LES. We find that large-scale thermodynamic advective tendencies and wind relaxations are important for the LES to capture the evolving observed BL meteorological states characterized by the hourly ERA5 reanalysis data and validated by the observations. We show that the divergence (or vertical velocity) is important in regulating the BL growth driven by surface heat fluxes in LES simulations. The evolution of liquid water path is largely affected by the evolution of surface heat fluxes. The liquid water path simulated in LES agrees reasonably well with the ACTIVATE measurements. This study paves the path to investigate aerosol-cloud-meteorology interactions using LES informed and evaluated by ACTIVATE field measurements.

Suppressing coherence effects in quantum-measurement based engines

The recent advances in the study of thermodynamics of microscopic processes have driven the search for new developments in energy converters utilizing quantum effects. We here propose a universal framework to describe the thermodynamics of a quantum engine fueled by quantum projective measurements. Standard quantum thermal machines operating in a finite-time regime with a driven Hamiltonian that does not commute in different times have the performance decreased by the presence of coherence, which is associated with a larger entropy production and irreversibility degree. However, we show that replacing the standard hot thermal reservoir by a projective measurement operation with general basis in the Bloch sphere and controlling the basis angles suitably could improve the performance of the quantum engine as well as decrease the entropy change during the measurement process. Our results go in direction of a generalization of quantum thermal machine models where the fuel comes from general sources beyond the standard thermal reservoir.

Geometry of Lagrangian self-shrinking tori and applications to the Piecewise Lagrangian Mean Curvature Flow

We study geometric properties of the Lagrangian self-shrinking tori in $\mathbb R^4$. When the area is bounded above uniformly, we prove that the entropy for the Lagrangian self-shrinking tori can only take finitely many values; this is done by deriving a Łojasiewicz-Simon type gradient inequality for the branched conformal self-shrinking tori and then combining with the compactness theorem in \cite{CMa}. When the area bound is small, we show that any Lagrangian self-shrinking torus in $\mathbb R^4$ with small area is embedded with uniform curvature estimates, and the space of such tori is compact. Using the finiteness of entropy values, we construct a piecewise Lagrangian mean curvature flow for Lagrangian immersed tori in $\mathbb R^4$, along which the Lagrangian condition is preserved, area is decreasing, and the type I singularities that are compact with a fixed area upper bound can be perturbed away in finite steps. This is a Lagrangian version of the construction for embedded surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ in \cite{CM}.

Extendability of conformal structures on punctured surfaces

For a smooth immersion $f$ from the punctured disk $D\backslash\{0\}$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$ extendable continuously at the puncture, if its mean curvature is square integrable and the measure of $f(D)\cap B_{r_k}=o(r_k)$ for a sequence $r_k\to 0$, we show that the Riemannian surface $(D_r\backslash\{0\},g)$ where $g$ is the induced metric is conformally equivalent to the unit Euclidean punctured disk, for any $r\in(0,1)$. For a locally $W^{2,2}$ Lipschitz immersion $f$ from the punctured disk $D_2\backslash\{0\}$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$, if $\|\nabla f\|_{L^\infty}$ is finite and the second fundamental form of $f$ is in $L^2$, we show that there exists a homeomorphism $ϕ:D\to D$ such that $f\circϕ$ is a branched $W^{2,2}$-conformal immersion from the Euclidean unit disk $D$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Liouville type theorems for the p-harmonic functions

We show that the Dirichlet problem at infinity is unsolvable for the p-Laplace equation for any nonconstant continuous boundary data, for certain range of p>n, on an n-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard manifold constructed from a complete noncompact shrinking gradient Ricci soliton. Using the steady gradient Ricci soliton, we find an incomplete Riemannian metric on ${\mathbb R}^2$ with positive Gauss curvature such that every positive p-harmonic function must be constant for $p\geq 4$.

Radially Symmetric Solutions To The Graphic Willmore Surface Equation

We show that a smooth radially symmetric solution $u$ to the graphic Willmore surface equation is either a constant or the defining function of a half sphere in ${\mathbb R}^3$. In particular, radially symmetric entire Willmore graphs in ${\mathbb R}^3$ must be flat. When $u$ is a smooth radial solution over a punctured disk $D(ρ)\backslash\{0\}$ and is in $C^1(D(ρ))$, we show that there exist a constant $λ$ and a function $β$ in $C^0(D(ρ))$ such that $u''(r) =\fracλ{2}\log r+β(r)$; moreover, the graph of $u$ is contained in a graphical region of an inverted catenoid which is uniquely determined by $λ$ and $β(0)$. It is also shown that a radial solution on the punctured disk extends to a $C^1$ function on the disk when the mean curvature is square integrable.

Homotopy classes of harmonic maps of the stratified 2-spheres and applications to geometric flows

We show that the set of harmonic maps from the 2-dimensional stratified spheres with uniformly bounded energies contains only finitely many homotopy classes. We apply this result to construct infinitely many harmonic map flows and mean curvature flows of 2-sphere in the connected sum of two closed 3-dimensional manifolds $M_1\not=S^3$ and $M_2\not=S^3,\R¶^3$, which must develop finite time singularity.

Minimal immersions of compact bordered Riemann surfaces with free boundary

Let N be a complete, homogeneously regular Riemannian manifold of dimension greater than 2 and let M be a compact submanifold of N. Let $Σ$ be a compact orientable surface with boundary. We show that for any continuous $f: (Σ, \partial Σ) \rightarrow (N, M)$ for which the induced homomorphism on certain fundamental groups is injective, there exists a branched minimal immersion of $Σ$ solving the free boundary problem $(Σ, \partial Σ) \rightarrow (N, M)$, and minimizing area among all maps which induce the same action on the fundamental groups as f. Furthermore, under certain nonnegativity assumptions on the curvature of a 3-manifold N and convexity assumptions on M which is the boundary of N, we derive bounds on the genus, number of boundary components and area of any compact two-sided minimal surface solving the free boundary problem with low index.

Bubble tree of a class of conformal mappings and applications to Willmore functional

We develop a bubble tree construction and prove compactness results for $W^{2,2}$ branched conformal immersions of closed Riemann surfaces, with varying conformal structures whose limit may degenerate, in a compact Riemannian manifold with uniformly bounded areas and Willmore energies. The compactness property is applied to construct Willmore type surfaces in compact Riemannian manifolds. This includes (a) existence of a Willmore 2-sphere in ${\mathbb S}^n$ with at least 2 nonremovable singular points (b) existence of minimizers of the Willmore functional with prescribed area in a compact manifold $N$ provided (i) the area is small when genus is 0 and (ii) the area is close to that of the area minimizing surface of Schoen-Yau and Sacks-Uhlenbeck in the homotopy class of an incompressible map from a surface of positive genus to $N$ and $π_2(N)$ is trivial (c) existence of smooth minimizers of the Willmore functional if a Douglas type condition is satisfied.

Rigidity of Entire self-shrinking solutions to curvature flows

We show that (a) any entire graphic self-shrinking solution to the Lagrangian mean curvature flow in ${\mathbb C}^{m}$ with the Euclidean metric is flat; (b) any space-like entire graphic self-shrinking solution to the Lagrangian mean curvature flow in ${\mathbb C}^{m}$ with the pseudo-Euclidean metric is flat if the Hessian of the potential is bounded below quadratically; and (c) the Hermitian counterpart of (b) for the Kähler Ricci flow.
