Kagome goldene with flat bands and Dirac nodal line fermions via line-graph epitaxy

The kagome lattice has emerged as a promising platform for investigating exotic quantum phases. However, achieving a single-atomic-layer kagome lattice in elemental materials remains a significant challenge. Here, we introduce line-graph epitaxy, a novel approach that enables the atomic-scale synthesis of goldene, a monolayer of elemental gold atoms arranged in a kagome lattice. Through scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrate the formation of kagome goldene, featuring a flat band with a van Hove singularity approximately 1.1 eV below the Fermi level, signaling strong electron correlation effects. Notably, the flat band is disrupted at the zigzag edges of goldene nanoflakes, revealing substantial edge effects. Furthermore, our calculations show that weak interlayer interactions between goldene and the underlying Au2Ge substrate generate dual Dirac nodal lines through a proximity effect. These findings offer not only a novel strategy for constructing elemental kagome lattices, but also a generalizable framework for fabricating and controlling line-graph materials. This research advances the exploration of quantum phases driven by strong correlations and the design of materials for next-generation quantum technologies.

Moments of Orthogonal Polynomials and Exponential Generating Functions

Starting from the moment sequences of classical orthogonal polynomials we derive the orthogonality purely algebraically. We consider also the moments of ($q=1$) classical orthogonal polynomials, and study those cases in which the exponential generating function has a nice form. In the opposite direction, we show that the generalized Dumont-Foata polynomials with six parameters are the moments of rescaled continuous dual Hahn polynomials. Finally we show that one of our methods can be applied to deal with the moments of Askey-Wilson polynomials.

Some multivariate master polynomials for permutations, set partitions, and perfect matchings, and their continued fractions

We find Stieltjes-type and Jacobi-type continued fractions for some "master polynomials" that enumerate permutations, set partitions or perfect matchings with a large (sometimes infinite) number of simultaneous statistics. Our results contain many previously obtained identities as special cases, providing a common refinement of all of them.

Realistic flat-band model based on degenerate $p$-orbitals in two-dimensional ionic materials

Though several theoretical models have been proposed to design electronic flat-bands, the definite experimental realization in two-dimensional atomic crystal is still lacking. Here we propose a novel and realistic flat-band model based on threefold degenerate $p$-orbitals in two-dimensional ionic materials. Our theoretical analysis and first-principles calculations show that the proposed flat-band can be realized in 1T layered materials of alkali-metal chalogenides and metal-carbon group compounds. Some of the former are theoretically predicted to be stable as layered materials (e.g., K$_2$S), and some of the latter have been experimentally fabricated in previous works (e.g., Gd$_2$CCl$_2$). More interestingly, the flat-band is partially filled in the heterostructure of a K$_2$S monolayer and graphene layers. The spin polarized nearly flat-band can be realized in the ferromagnetic state of a Gd$_2$CCl$_2$ monolayer, which has been fabricated in experiments. Our theoretical model together with the material predictions provide a realistic platform for the study of flat-bands and related exotic quantum phases.

Around the $q$-binomial-Eulerian polynomials

We find a combinatorial interpretation of Shareshian and Wachs' $q$-binomial-Eulerian polynomials, which leads to an alternative proof of their $q$-$γ$-positivity using group actions. Motivated by the sign-balance identity of Désarménien--Foata--Loday for the $(\mathrm{des}, \mathrm{inv})$-Eulerian polynomials, we further investigate the sign-balance of the $q$-binomial-Eulerian polynomials. We show the unimodality of the resulting signed binomial-Eulerian polynomials by exploiting their continued fraction expansion and making use of a new quadratic recursion for the $q$-binomial-Eulerian polynomials. We finally use the method of continued fractions to derive a new $(p,q)$-extension of the $γ$-positivity of binomial-Eulerian polynomials which involves crossings and nestings of permutations.

Brändén's $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials, André permutations and continued fractions

In 2008 Brändén proved a $(p,q)$-analogue of the $γ$-expansion formula for Eulerian polynomials and conjectured the divisibility of the $γ$-coefficient $γ_{n,k}(p,q)$ by $(p+q)^k$. As a follow-up, in 2012 Shin and Zeng showed that the fraction $γ_{n,k}(p, q)/(p + q)^k$ is a polynomial in $\N[p,q]$. The aim of this paper is to give a combinatorial interpretation of the latter polynomial in terms of André permutations, a class of objects first defined and studied by Foata, Schützenberger and Strehl in the 1970s. It turns out that our result provides an answer to a recent open problem of Han, which was the impetus of this paper.

Equidistributions of mesh patterns of length two and Kitaev and Zhang's conjectures

A systematic study of avoidance of mesh patterns of length 2 was conducted by Hilmarsson et al. in 2015. In a recent paper Kitaev and Zhang examined the distribution of the aforementioned patterns. The aim of this paper is to prove more equidistributions of mesh pattern and confirm Kitaev and Zhang's four conjectures by constructing two involutions on permutations.

Eulerian polynomials and excedance statistics

A formula of Stembridge states that the permutation peak polynomials and descent polynomials are connected via a quadratique transformation. The aim of this paper is to establish the cycle analogue of Stembridge's formula by using cycle peaks and excedances of permutations. We prove a series of new general formulae expressing polynomials counting permutations by various excedance statistics in terms of refined Eulerian polynomials. Our formulae are comparable with Zhuang's generalizations [Adv. in Appl. Math. 90 (2017) 86-144] using descent statistics of permutations. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving variations of classical bijections from permutations to Laguerre histories, explicit continued fraction expansions of combinatorial generating functions in Shin and Zeng [European J. Combin. 33 (2012), no. 2, 111--127] and cycle version of modified Foata-Strehl action. We also prove similar formulae for restricted permutations such as derangements and permutations avoiding certain patterns. Moreover, we provide new combinatorial interpretations for the $γ$-coefficients of the inversion polynomials restricted on $321$-avoiding permutations.

Gap between the largest and smallest parts of partitions and Berkovich and Uncu's conjectures

We prove three main conjectures of Berkovich and Uncu (Ann. Comb. 23 (2019) 263--284) on the inequalities between the numbers of partitions of $n$ with bounded gap between largest and smallest parts for sufficiently large $n$. Actually our theorems are stronger than their original conjectures. The analytic version of our results shows that the coefficients of some partition $q$-series are eventually positive.

More bijections for Entringer and Arnold families

The Euler number $E_n$ (resp. Entringer number $E_{n,k}$) enumerates the alternating (down-up) permutations of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ (resp. starting with $k$). The Springer number $S_n$ (resp. Arnold number $S_{n,k}$) enumerates the type $B$ alternating permutations (resp. starting with $k$). In this paper, using bijections we first derive the counterparts in {\em André permutations} and {\em Simsun permutations} for the Entringer numbers $(E_{n,k})$, and then the counterparts in {\em signed André permutations} and {\em type $B$ increasing 1-2 trees} for the Arnold numbers $(S_{n,k})$.

Distinct Reconstruction Patterns and Spin-Resolved Electronic States along the Zigzag Edges of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides represent an emerging class of materials exhibiting various intriguing properties, and integration of such materials for potential device applications will necessarily encounter creation of different boundaries. Using first-principles approaches, here we investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties along two inequivalent zigzag M and X edges of MX$_{2}$ (M=Mo, W; X=S, Se). Along the M edges, we reveal a previously unrecognized but energetically strongly preferred (2x1) reconstruction pattern, which is universally operative for all the MX$_{2}$, characterized by a self-passivation mechanism through place exchanges of the outmost X and M edge atoms. In contrast, the X edges undergo a more moderate (2x1) or (3x1) reconstruction for MoX$_{2}$ or WX$_{2}$, respectively. We further use the prototypical zigzag MoX$_{2}$ nanoribbons to demonstrate that the M and X edges possess distinctly different electronic and magnetic properties, which are discussed for spintronic and catalytic applications.

Carlitz q-Bernoulli numbers and continued fractions

Carlitz has introduced q-analogues of the Bernoulli numbers around 1950. We obtain a representation of these q-Bernoulli numbers (and some shifted version) as moments of some orthogonal polynomials. This also gives factorisations of Hankel determinants of q-Bernoulli numbers, and continued fractions for their generating series. Some of these results are q-analogues of known results for Bernoulli numbers, but some are specific to the q-Bernoulli setting.

Orientationally Misaligned Zipping of Lateral Graphene and Boron Nitride Nanoribbons with Minimized Strain Energy and Enhanced Half-Metallicity

Lateral heterostructures of two-dimensional materials may exhibit various intriguing emergent properties. Yet when specified to the orientationally aligned heterojunctions of zigzag graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoribbons, realizations of the high expectations on their properties encounter two standing hurtles. First, the rapid accumulation of strain energy prevents large- scale fabrication. Secondly, the pronounced half-metallicity predicted for freestanding graphene nanoribbons is severely suppressed. By properly tailoring orientational misalignment between zigzag graphene and chiral hBN nanoribbons, here we present a facile approach to overcome both obstacles. Our first-principles calculations show that the strain energy accumulation in such heterojunctions is significantly diminished for a range of misalignments. More strikingly, the half-metallicity is substantially enhanced from the orientationally aligned case, back to be comparable in magnitude with the freestanding case. The restored half-metallicity is largely attributed to the recovered superexchange interaction between the opposite heterojunction interfaces. The present findings may have important implications in eventual realization of graphene-based spintronics.

q-Differential equations for q-classical polynomials and q-Jacobi-Stirling numbers

We introduce, characterise and provide a combinatorial interpretation for the so-called $q$-Jacobi-Stirling numbers. This study is motivated by their key role in the (reciprocal) expansion of any power of a second order $q$-differential operator having the $q$-classical polynomials as eigenfunctions in terms of other even order operators, which we explicitly construct in this work. The results here obtained can be viewed as the $q$-version of those given by Everitt {\it et al.} and by the first author, whilst the combinatorics of this new set of numbers is a $q$-version of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers given by Gelineau and the second author.

Symmetric unimodal expansions of excedances in colored permutations

We consider several generalizations of the classical $γ$-positivity of Eulerian polynomials (and their derangement analogues) using generating functions and combinatorial theory of continued fractions. For the symmetric group, we prove an expansion formula for inversions and excedances as well as a similar expansion for derangements. We also prove the $γ$-positivity for Eulerian polynomials for derangements of type $B$. More general expansion formulae are also given for Eulerian polynomials for $r$-colored derangements. Our results answer and generalize several recent open problems in the literature.

The $γ$-positivity of basic Eulerian polynomials via group actions

We provide combinatorial interpretation for the $γ$-coefficients of the basic Eulerian polynomials that enumerate permutations by the excedance statistic and the major index as well as the corresponding $γ$-coefficients for derangements. Our results refine the classical $γ$-positivity results for the Eulerian polynomials and the derangement polynomials. The main tools are Brändén's modified Foata--Strehl action on permutations and the recent triple statistic (des, rix, aid) equidistibuted with (exc, fix, maj).

Some q-analogues of (super)congruences of Beukers, Van Hamme and Rodriguez-Villegas

For any odd prime p we obtain q-analogues of Van Hamme's supercongruence: $$ \sum_{k=0}^{\frac{p-1}{2}}{2k\choose k}^3\frac{1}{64^k} \equiv 0 \pmod{p^2} \quad\text{for}\quad p\equiv 3\pmod 4, $$ and Rodriguez-Villegas' Beukers-like supercongruences involving products of three binomial coefficients. For example, we prove that \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{\frac{p-1}{2}} {2k\brack k}_{q^2}^3 \frac{q^{2k}}{(-q^2;q^2)_k^2 (-q;q)_{2k}^2} &\equiv 0\pmod{[p]^2} \quad\text{for}\quad p\equiv 3\pmod 4, \\ \sum_{k=0}^{\frac{p-1}{2}}{2k\brack k}_{q^3}\frac{(q;q^3)_k (q^{2};q^3)_{k} q^{3k} }{ (q^{6};q^{6})_k^2 } &\equiv 0 \pmod{[p]^2}\quad\text{for}\quad p\equiv 2\pmod{3}, \end{align*} where $[p]=1+q+\cdots+q^{p-1}$, $(a;q)_n=(1-a)(1-aq)\cdots(1-aq^{n-1})$, and ${n\brack k}_q$ denotes the q-binomial coefficient. Actually, our results give q-analogues of Z.-H. Sun's and Z.-W. Sun's generalizations of the above Beukers-like supercongruences. Our proof uses the theory of basic hypergeometric series including a new q-Clausen-type summation formula.

Some q-analogues of supercongruences of Rodriguez-Villegas

We study different q-analogues and generalizations of the ex-conjectures of Rodriguez-Villegas. For example, for any odd prime p, we show that the known congruence \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{{2k\choose k}^2}{16^k} \equiv (-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}}\pmod{p^2} has the following two nice q-analogues with [p]=1+q+...+q^{p-1}: \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{(q;q^2)_k^2}{(q^2;q^2)_k^2}q^{(1+\varepsilon)k} &\equiv (-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}}q^{\frac{(p^2-1)\varepsilon}{4}}\pmod{[p]^2}, where (a;q)_0=1, (a;q)_n=(1-a)(1-aq)...(1-aq^{n-1}) for n=1,2,..., and \varepsilon=\pm1. Several related conjectures are also proposed.

A curious polynomial interpolation of Carlitz-Riordan's $q$-ballot numbers

We study a polynomial sequence $C_n(x|q)$ defined as a solution of a $q$-difference equation. This sequence, evaluated at $q$-integers, interpolates Carlitz-Riordan's $q$-ballot numbers. In the basis given by some kind of $q$-binomial coefficients, the coefficients are again some $q$-ballot numbers. We obtain in a combinatorial way another curious recurrence relation for these polynomials.

A quadratic formula for basic hypergeometric series related to Askey-Wilson polynomials

We prove a general quadratic formula for basic hypergeometric series, from which simple proofs of several recent determinant and Pfaffian formulas are obtained. A special case of the quadratic formula is actually related to a Gram determinant formula for Askey-Wilson polynomials. We also show how to derive a recent double-sum formula for the moments of Askey-Wilson polynomials from Newton's interpolation formula.

Positivity properties of Jacobi-Stirling numbers and generalized Ramanujan polynomials

Generalizing recent results of Egge and Mongelli, we show that each diagonal sequence of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers $\js(n,k;z)$ and $\JS(n,k;z)$ is a Pólya frequency sequence if and only if $z\in [-1, 1]$ and study the $z$-total positivity properties of these numbers. Moreover, the polynomial sequences $$\biggl\{\sum_{k=0}^n\JS(n,k;z)y^k\biggr\}_{n\geq 0}\quad \text{and} \quad \biggl\{\sum_{k=0}^n\js(n,k;z)y^k\biggr\}_{n\geq 0}$$ are proved to be strongly $\{z,y\}$-log-convex. In the same vein, we extend a recent result of Chen et al. about the Ramanujan polynomials to Chapoton's generalized Ramanujan polynomials. Finally, bridging the Ramanujan polynomials and a sequence arising from the Lambert $W$ function, we obtain a neat proof of the unimodality of the latter sequence, which was proved previously by Kalugin and Jeffrey.

A generalization of the Mehta-Wang determinant and Askey-Wilson polynomials

Motivated by the Gaussian symplectic ensemble, Mehta and Wang evaluated the $n$ by $n$ determinant $\det((a+j-i)Γ(b+j+i))$ in 2000. When $a=0$, Ciucu and Krattenthaler computed the associated Pfaffian $\Pf((j-i)Γ(b+j+i))$ with an application to the two dimensional dimer system in 2011. Recently we have generalized the latter Pfaffian formula with a $q$-analogue by replacing the Gamma function by the moment sequence of the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. On the other hand, Nishizawa has found a $q$-analogue of the Mehta--Wang formula. Our purpose is to generalize both the Mehta-Wang and Nishizawa formulae by using the moment sequence of the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. It turns out that the corresponding determinant can be evaluated explicitly in terms of the Askey-Wilson polynomials.

Jacobi-Stirling polynomials and $P$-partitions

We investigate the diagonal generating function of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers of the second kind $ \JS(n+k,n;z)$ by generalizing the analogous results for the Stirling and Legendre-Stirling numbers. More precisely, letting $\JS(n+k,n;z)=p_{k,0}(n)+p_{k,1}(n)z+...+p_{k,k}(n)z^k$, we show that $(1-t)^{3k-i+1}\sum_{n\geq0}p_{k,i}(n)t^n$ is a polynomial in $t$ with nonnegative integral coefficients and provide combinatorial interpretations of the coefficients by using Stanley's theory of $P$-partitions.

New congruences for sums involving Apery numbers or central Delannoy numbers

The Apéry numbers $A_n$ and central Delannoy numbers $D_n$ are defined by $$A_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}^2{2k\choose k}^2, \quad D_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}{2k\choose k}. $$ Motivated by some recent work of Z.-W. Sun, we prove the following congruences: \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)^{2r+1}A_k &\equiv \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\varepsilon^k (2k+1)^{2r+1}D_k \equiv 0\pmod n, where $n\geqslant 1$, $r\geqslant 0$, and $\varepsilon=\pm1$. For $r=1$, we further show that \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)^{3}A_k &\equiv 0\pmod{n^3}, \quad \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)^{3}A_k &\equiv p^3 \pmod{2p^6}, where $p>3$ is a prime. The following congruence \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} {n+k\choose k}^2{n-1\choose k}^2 \equiv 0 \pmod{n} plays an important role in our proof.

Separation of variables and combinatorics of linearization coefficients of orthogonal polynomials

We propose a new approach to the combinatorial interpretations of linearization coefficient problem of orthogonal polynomials. We first establish a difference system and then solve it combinatorially and analytically using the method of separation of variables. We illustrate our approach by applying it to determine the number of perfect matchings, derangements, and other weighted permutation problems. The separation of variables technique naturally leads to integral representations of combinatorial numbers where the integrand contains a product of one or more types of orthogonal polynomials. This also establishes the positivity of such integrals.

The symmetric and unimodal expansion of Eulerian polynomials via continued fractions

This paper was motivated by a conjecture of Brändén (European J. Combin. \textbf{29} (2008), no.~2, 514--531) about the divisibility of the coefficients in an expansion of generalized Eulerian polynomials, which implies the symmetric and unimodal property of the Eulerian numbers. We show that such a formula with the conjectured property can be derived from the combinatorial theory of continued fractions. We also discuss an analogous expansion for the corresponding formula for derangements and prove a $(p,q)$-analogue of the fact that the (-1)-evaluation of the enumerator polynomials of permutations (resp. derangements) by the number of excedances gives rise to tangent numbers (resp. secant numbers). The $(p,q)$-analogue unifies and generalizes our recent results (European J. Combin. \textbf{31} (2010), no.~7, 1689--1705.) and that of Josuat-Vergès (European J. Combin. \textbf{31} (2010), no.~7, 1892--1906).

Two new triangles of $q$-integers via $q$-Eulerian polynomials of type $A$ and $B$

The classical Eulerian polynomials can be expanded in the basis $t^{k-1}(1+t)^{n+1-2k}$ ($1\leq k\leq\lfloor (n+1)/2\rfloor$) with positive integral coefficients. This formula implies both the symmetry and the unimodality of the Eulerian polynomials. In this paper, we prove a $q$-analogue of this expansion for Carlitz's $q$-Eulerian polynomials as well as a similar formula for Chow-Gessel's $q$-Eulerian polynomials of type $B$. We shall give some applications of these two formulae, which involve two new sequences of polynomials in the variable $q$ with positive integral coefficients. An open problem is to give a combinatorial interpretation for these polynomials.

We prove a single sum formula for the linearization coefficients of the Bessel polynomials. In two special cases we show that our formula reduces indeed to Berg and Vignat's formulas in their proof of the positivity results about these coefficients (Constructive Approximation, 27(2008), 15-32). As a bonus we also obtain a generalization of an integral formula of Boros and Moll (J. Comput. Appl. Math. 106 (1999), 361-368).

Factors of sums and alternating sums involving binomial coefficients and powers of integers

We study divisibility properties of certain sums and alternating sums involving binomial coefficients and powers of integers. For example, we prove that for all positive integers $n_1,..., n_m$, $n_{m+1}=n_1$, and any nonnegative integer $r$, there holds {align*} \sum_{k=0}^{n_1}ε^k (2k+1)^{2r+1}\prod_{i=1}^{m} {n_i+n_{i+1}+1\choose n_i-k} \equiv 0 \mod (n_1+n_m+1){n_1+n_m\choose n_1}, {align*} and conjecture that for any nonnegative integer $r$ and positive integer $s$ such that $r+s$ is odd, $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n}ε^k (2k+1)^{r}({2n\choose n-k}-{2n\choose n-k-1})^{s} \equiv 0 \mod{2n\choose n}, $$ where $ε=\pm 1$.

A bijective enumeration of labeled trees with given indegree sequence

For a labeled tree on the vertex set $\set{1,2,\ldots,n}$, the local direction of each edge $(i\,j)$ is from $i$ to $j$ if $i<j$. For a rooted tree, there is also a natural global direction of edges towards the root. The number of edges pointing to a vertex is called its indegree. Thus the local (resp. global) indegree sequence $λ= 1^{e_1}2^{e_2} \ldots$ of a tree on the vertex set $\set{1,2,\ldots,n}$ is a partition of $n-1$. We construct a bijection from (unrooted) trees to rooted trees such that the local indegree sequence of a (unrooted) tree equals the global indegree sequence of the corresponding rooted tree. Combining with a Prüfer-like code for rooted labeled trees, we obtain a bijective proof of a recent conjecture by Cotterill and also solve two open problems proposed by Du and Yin. We also prove a $q$-multisum binomial coefficient identity which confirms another conjecture of Cotterill in a very special case.

A q-analogue of Catalan Hankel determinants

In this paper we shall survey the various methods of evaluating Hankel determinants and as an illustration we evaluate some Hankel determinants of a q-analogue of Catalan numbers. We also give several proofs of this q-analogue, in which we use lattice paths, the orthogonal polynomials, or the basic hypergeometric series. Bijections for Entringer families

André proved that the number of alternating permutations on $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ is equal to the Euler number $E_n$. A refinement of André's result was given by Entringer, who proved that counting alternating permutations according to the first element gives rise to Seidel's triangle $(E_{n,k})$ for computing the Euler numbers. In a series of papers, using generating function method and induction, Poupard gave several further combinatorial interpretations for $E_{n,k}$ both in alternating permutations and increasing trees. Kuznetsov, Pak, and Postnikov have given more combinatorial interpretations of $E_{n,k}$ in the model of trees. The aim of this paper is to provide bijections between the different models for $E_{n,k}$ as well as some new interpretations. In particular, we give the first explicit one-to-one correspondence between Entringer's alternating permutation model and Poupard's increasing tree model.

Pfaffian decomposition and a Pfaffian analogue of q-Catalan Hankel determinants

Motivated by the Hankel determinant evaluation of moment sequences, we study a kind of Pfaffian analogue evaluation. We prove an LU-decomposition analogue for skew-symmetric matrices, called Pfaffian decomposition. We then apply this formula to evaluate Pfaffians related to some moment sequences of classical orthogonal polynomials. In particular we obtain a product formula for a kind of q-Catalan Pfaffians. Some congruences involving central q-binomial coefficients

Motivated by recent works of Sun and Tauraso, we prove some variations on the Green-Krammer identity involving central q-binomial coefficients, such as $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(-1)^kq^{-{k+1\choose 2}}{2k\brack k}_q \equiv (\frac{n}{5}) q^{-\lfloor n^4/5\rfloor} \pmod{Φ_n(q)}, $$ where $\big(\frac{n}{p}\big)$ is the Legendre symbol and $Φ_n(q)$ is the $n$th cyclotomic polynomial. As consequences, we deduce that $$ \sum_{k=0}^{3^a m-1} q^{k}{2k\brack k}_q &\equiv 0 \pmod{(1-q^{3^a})/(1-q)}, \sum_{k=0}^{5^a m-1}(-1)^kq^{-{k+1\choose 2}}{2k\brack k}_q &\equiv 0 \pmod{(1-q^{5^a})/(1-q)}, $$ for $a,m\geq 1$, the first one being a partial q-analogue of the Strauss-Shallit-Zagier congruence modulo powers of 3. Several related conjectures are proposed.

The $q$-tangent and $q$-secant numbers via continued fractions

It is well known that the $(-1)$-evaluation of the enumerator polynomials of permutations (resp. derangements) by the number of excedances gives rise to tangent numbers (resp. secant numbers). Recently, two distinct $q$-analogues of the latter result have been discovered by Foata and Han, and Josuat-Vergès, respectively. In this paper, we will prove some general continued fractions expansions formulae, which permits us to give a unified treatment of Josuat-Vergès' two formulae and also to derive a new $q$-analogue of the aforementioned formulae. Our approach is based on a $(p,q)$-analogue of tangent and secant numbers via continued fractions and also the generating function of permutations with respect to the quintuple statistic consisting of fixed point number, weak excedance number, crossing number, nesting number and inversion number. We also give a combinatorial proof of Josuat-Vergès' formulae by using a new linear model of derangements.

By using the Newton interpolation formula, we generalize the recent identities on the Catalan triangle obtained by Miana and Romero as well as those of Chen and Chu. We further study divisibility properties of sums of products of binomial coefficients and an odd power of a natural number. For example, we prove that for all positive integers $n_1, ..., n_m$, $n_{m+1}=n_1$, and any nonnegative integer $r$, the expression $$n_1^{-1}{n_1+n_{m}\choose n_1}^{-1} \sum_{k=1}^{n_1}k^{2r+1}\prod_{i=1}^{m} {n_i+n_{i+1}\choose n_i+k}$$ is either an integer or a half-integer. A Generalization of the Ramanujan Polynomials and Plane Trees

Generalizing a sequence of Lambert, Cayley and Ramanujan, Chapoton has recently introduced a polynomial sequence Q_n:=Q_n(x,y,z,t) defined by Q_1=1, Q_{n+1}=[x+nz+(y+t)(n+y\partial_y)]Q_n. In this paper we prove Chapoton's conjecture on the duality formula: Q_n(x,y,z,t)=Q_n(x+nz+nt,y,-t,-z), and answer his question about the combinatorial interpretation of Q_n. Actually we give combinatorial interpretations of these polynomials in terms of plane trees, half-mobile trees, and forests of plane trees. Our approach also leads to a general formula that unifies several known results for enumerating trees and plane trees.

Some Arithmetic Properties of the q-Euler Numbers and q-Salié Numbers

For m>n\geq 0 and 1\leq d\leq m, it is shown that the q-Euler number E_{2m}(q) is congruent to q^{m-n}E_{2n}(q) mod (1+q^d) if and only if m\equiv n mod d. The q-Salié number S_{2n}(q) is shown to be divisible by (1+q^{2r+1})^{\left\lfloor \frac{n}{2r+1}\right\rfloor} for any r\geq 0. Furthermore, similar congruences for the generalized q-Euler numbers are also obtained, and some conjectures are formulated.

A q-Analogue of Faulhaber's Formula for Sums of Powers

Let $$ S_{m,n}(q):=\sum_{k=1}^{n}\frac{1-q^{2k}}{1-q^2} (\frac{1-q^k}{1-q})^{m-1}q^{\frac{m+1}{2}(n-k)}. $$ Generalizing the formulas of Warnaar and Schlosser, we prove that there exist polynomials $P_{m,k}(q)\in\mathbb{Z}[q]$ such that $$ S_{2m+1,n}(q) =\sum_{k=0}^{m}(-1)^kP_{m,k}(q) \frac{(1-q^n)^{m+1-k}(1-q^{n+1})^{m+1-k}q^{kn}} {(1-q^2)(1-q)^{2m-3k}\prod_{i=0}^{k}(1-q^{m+1-i})}, $$ and solve a problem raised by Schlosser. We also show that there is a similar formula for the following $q$-analogue of alternating sums of powers: $$ T_{m,n}(q):=\sum_{k=1}^{n}(-1)^{n-k} (\frac{1-q^k}{1-q})^{m}q^{\frac{m}{2}(n-k)}. $$

Combinatorial Interpretations of the q-Faulhaber and q-Salie Coefficients

Recently, Guo and Zeng discovered two families of polynomials featuring in a q-analogue of Faulhaber's formula for the sums of powers and a q-analogue of Gessel-Viennot's formula involving Salie's coefficients for the alternating sums of powers. In this paper, we show that these are polynomials with symmetric, nonnegative integral coefficients by refining Gessel-Viennot's combinatorial interpretations.

The Eulerian Distribution on Involutions is Indeed Unimodal

Let I_{n,k} (resp. J_{n,k}) be the number of involutions (resp. fixed-point free involutions) of {1,...,n} with k descents. Motivated by Brenti's conjecture which states that the sequence I_{n,0}, I_{n,1},..., I_{n,n-1} is log-concave, we prove that the two sequences I_{n,k} and J_{2n,k} are unimodal in k, for all n. Furthermore, we conjecture that there are nonnegative integers a_{n,k} such that $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}I_{n,k}t^k=\sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor (n-1)/2\rfloor}a_{n,k}t^{k}(1+t)^{n-2k-1}. $$ This statement is stronger than the unimodality of I_{n,k} but is also interesting in its own right.
