Electromagnetic helicity flux density for radiative systems

We show that the helicity flux density is distinguished from magnetic helicity by analysing Hopf solitons. The electromagnetic (EM) helicity flux and the magnetic helicity are Chern-Simons terms at different hypersurfaces. We find the helicity flux density for a point charge moving with an acceleration, extending the Liénard-Wiechert angular distribution of radiant power. We also derive the multipole expansion of the helicity flux density, generalizing the Larmor's formula for the radiant power. These formulae have been applied to discuss the helicity flux density in several toy models such as circular and helical motion as well as soft bremsstrahlung. We also comment on the potential applications of the EM helicity flux density to pulsar systems.

Classification of radial Kerr geodesic motion

We classify radial timelike geodesic motion of the exterior non-extremal Kerr spacetime by performing a taxonomy of inequivalent root structures of the first order radial geodesic equation using a novel compact notation and by implementing the constraints from polar, time and azimuthal motion. Four generic root structures with only simple roots give rise to eight non-generic root structures when either one root becomes coincident with the horizon, one root vanishes or two roots becomes coincident. We derive the explicit phase space of all such root systems in the basis of energy, angular momentum and Carter's constant and classify whether each corresponding radial geodesic motion is allowed or disallowed from existence of polar, time and azimuthal motion. The classification of radial motion within the ergoregion for both positive and negative energies leads to 6 distinguished values of the Kerr angular momentum. The classification of null radial motion and near-horizon extremal Kerr radial motion are obtained as limiting cases and compared with the literature. We explicitly parametrize the separatrix describing root systems with double roots as the union of the following three regions that are described by the same quartic respectively obtained when (1) the pericenter of bound motion becomes a double root; (2) the eccentricity of bound motion becomes zero; (3) the turning point of unbound motion becomes a double root.

Correlation function with the insertion of zero modes of modular Hamiltonians

Zero modes of modular Hamiltonian of one interval are found in momentum space for two dimensional massless free scalar theory. Finite correlators are extracted from separate region connected correlation functions with the insertion of zero modes. Correlators of $(n,1)$-type are claimed to be conformal block up to a set of theory dependent constants. We fix the correlators of $(2,1)$-type with the coefficients of three point function in 2d CFTs.

Logarithmic behaviour of connected correlation function in CFT

We study $(m)$-type connected correlation functions of OPE blocks with respect to one spatial region in two dimensional conformal field theory. We find logarithmic divergence for these correlation functions. We justify the logarithmic behaviour from three different approaches: massless free scalar theory, Selberg integral and conformal block. Cutoff independent coefficients are obtained from analytic continuation of conformal blocks. A UV/IR relation has been found in connected correlation functions. We could derive a formal ``first law of thermodynamics'' for a subsystem using deformed reduced density matrix. Area law of connected correlation function in higher dimensions is also discussed briefly.

Spin and Quadrupole Couplings for High Spin Equatorial Intermediate Mass-ratio Coalescences

Intermediate mass-ratio coalescences are potential signals of ground-based and space-based gravitational observatories. Accurate modeling of their waveforms within general relativity can be achieved within black hole perturbation theory including self-force and finite size effects. In this paper, we present analytic results to the Teukolsky perturbation of equatorial orbits in the near-horizon region of an extremely high spin black hole including spin coupling and finite size effects at leading order in the high spin limit while neglecting the self-force. We detail the critical behavior occuring close to the smallest specific angular momentum, and we discuss features of spin and quadrupole couplings.

Waveform Selective Surfaces

The role of frequency is very important in electromagnetics since it may significantly change how a material interacts with an incident wave if the frequency spectrum varies. Here, we demonstrate a new kind of microwave window that has the unique property of controlling transmission and reflection based not only on the frequency of an incoming wave but also on the waveform or pulse width. This surface can preferentially pass or reject different kinds of signals, such as short pulses or continuous waves, even if they occur at the same frequency. Such a structure can be used, for example, to allow long communication signals to pass through, while rejecting short radar pulses in the same frequency band. It is related to the classic frequency selective surface, but adds the new dimension of waveform selectivity, which is only possible by introducing nonlinear electronics into the surface. Thus, our study is expected to provide new solutions to both fundamental and applied electromagnetic issues ranging from traditional antenna design and wireless communications to emerging areas such as cloaking, perfect lenses, and wavefront shaping.

Classical static final state of collapse with supertranslation memory

The Kerr metric models the final classical black hole state after gravitational collapse of matter and radiation. Any stationary metric which is close to the Kerr metric has been proven to be diffeomorphic to it. Now, finite supertranslation diffeomorphisms are symmetries which map solutions to inequivalent solutions as such diffeomorphisms generate conserved superrotation charges. The final state of gravitational collapse is therefore parameterized by its mass, angular momentum and supertranslation field, signaled by its conserved superrotation charges. In this paper, we first derive the angle-dependent energy conservation law relating the asymptotic value of the supertranslation field of the final state to the details of the collapse and subsequent evolution of the system. We then generate the static solution with an asymptotic supertranslation field and we study some of its properties. Up to a caveat, the deviation from the Schwarzschild metric could therefore be predicted on a case-by-case basis from accurate modeling of the angular dependence of the ingoing and outgoing energy fluxes leading to the final state.

On co-dimension two defect operators

Conformal symmetry is broken by a flat or spherical defect operator $\mathcal{D}$. We show that this defect operator, may be identified as a pair of twist operators which are inserted at the tips of its causal diamond. Any $k-$point correlation function in a flat or spherical defect CFT is equivalent to a $(k+2)-$point correlation function. We reproduce one point correlation functions and also solve two point correlation functions in defect CFTs . Mutual Rényi entropy is computed and agrees with previous result in a certain limit. We conjecture there may be universal terms in general co-dimension two defect CFTs.

Vacua of the gravitational field

The Poincaré invariant vacuum is not unique in quantum gravity. The BMS supertranslation symmetry originally defined at null infinity is spontaneously broken and results in inequivalent Poincaré vacua. In this paper we construct the unique vacua which interpolate between past and future null infinity in BMS gauge and which are entirely characterized by an arbitary Goldstone boson defined on the sphere which breaks BMS invariance. We show that these vacua contain a defect which carries no Poincaré charges but which generically carries superrotation charges. We argue that there is a huge degeneracy of vacua with multiple defects. We also present the single defect vacua with its canonically conjugated source which can be constructed from a Liouville boson on the stereographic plane. We show that positivity of the energy forces the stress-tensor of the boson to vanish as a boundary condition. Finite superrotations, which turn on the sources, are therefore physically ruled out as canonical transformations around the vacua. Yet, infinitesimal superrotations are external symplectic symmetries which are associated with conserved charges which characterize the Goldstone boson.

Higher Spin Entanglement Entropy

In this paper, we develop a perturbation formulation to calculate the single interval higher spin R$\acute{e}$nyi and entanglement entropy for two dimensional conformal field theory with $\mathcal{W}_{\infty}(λ)$ symmetry. The system is at finite temperature and is deformed by higher spin chemical potential. We manage to compute higher spin R$\acute{e}$nyi entropy with various spin deformations up to order $\mathcal{O}(μ^2)$. For spin 3 deformation, we calculate exact higher spin R$\acute{e}$nyi entropy up to $\mathcal{O}(μ^4)$. When $λ=3$, in the large $c$ limit, we find perfect match with tree level holographic higher spin entanglement entropy up to order $μ^4$ obtained by the Wilson line prescription. We also find quantum corrections to higher spin entanglement entropy which is beyond tree level holographic results. The quantum correction is universal at order $μ^4$ in the sense that it is independent of $λ$. Our computation relies on a multi-valued conformal map from $n$-sheeted Riemann surface $\mathcal{R}_n$ to complex plane and correlation functions of primary fields on complex plane. The method can be applied to general conformal field theories with $\mathcal{W}$ symmetry.

Holographic Rényi entropy for CFT with $W$ symmetry

In this paper we investigate the holographic Rényi entropy of two disjoint intervals on complex plane with small cross ratio $x$ for conformal field theory with $W$ symmetry in the ground state, which could be dual to a higher spin AdS$_3$ gravity. We focus on the cases of $W_3$ and $W_4$ symmetries. In order to see the nontrivial contributions from the $W$ fields, we calculate the Rényi entropy in the expansion of $x$ to order $x^8$ in both the gravity and the CFT sides. In the gravity side the classical contributions to the entanglement entropy is still given by the Ryu-Takayanagi area formula under the reasonable assumption, while the 1-loop quantum corrections have to take into account of the contributions not only from massless gravitons, but also from massless higher spin fields. In the CFT side we still use the operator product expansion of twist operators in the small interval limit, but now we need to consider the quasiprimary fields constructed from $W$ fields, besides the ones from Virasoro Verma module. In the large central charge limit, we obtain the classical, 1-loop, 2-loop, and 3-loop parts of the Rényi entropy. The classical and 1-loop results in the gravity and the CFT sides are in exact match. This confirms the higher spin gravity/CFT correspondence, and also supports the holographic computation of Rényi entanglement entropy, including the quantum correction, in both the AdS$_3$ gravity and the higher spin AdS$_3$ gravity.

Strong Subadditivity and Emergent Surface

In this paper, we introduce two bounds which we call the Upper Differential Entropy and the Lower Differential Entropy for an infinite family of intervals(strips) in quantum field theory. The two bounds are equal provided that the theory is translational invariant and the entanglement entropy varies smoothly with respect to the interval. When the theory has a holographic dual, strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy indicates that there is always an emergent surface whose gravitational entropy is exactly given by the bound.

Conical Defects, Black Holes and Higher Spin (Super-)Symmetry

We study the (super-)symmetries of classical solutions in the higher spin (super-)gravity in AdS$_3$. We show that the symmetries of the solutions are encoded in the holonomy around the spatial circle. When the spatial holonomies of the solutions are trivial, they preserve maximal symmetries of the theory, and are actually the smooth conical defects. We find all the smooth conical defects in the $sl(N), so(2N+1),sp(2N), so(2N), g_2$, as well as in $sl(N|N-1)$ and $osp(2N+1|2N)$ Chern-Simons gravity theories. In the bosonic higher spin cases, there are one-to-one correspondences between the smooth conical defects and the highest weight representations of Lie group. Furthermore we investigate the higher spin black holes in $osp(3|2)$ and $sl(3|2)$ higher spin (super-)gravity and find that they are only partially symmetric. In general, the black holes break all the supersymmetries, but in some cases they preserve part of the supersymmetries.

D2 Chern-Simons Gravity

We study the theory that contains two spin-2 fields. This theory can be regarded as a simplified version of higher spin gravity in AdS3. It can be formulated either in the first order formulation or in the second order formulation. From the first order formulation we construct the black holes in the theory and study the thermodynamics of this black holes with the help of dual holographic OPE. From the higher spin point of view, this black hole is most naturally regarded as a black hole with a spin-2 hair. In the second order formulation, we obtain an action for the metric and extra spin-2 fields and analyze the corresponding black holes. Even though for some simple cases, the conventional notions, such as the horizon, may help us to read part of the information of the black hole, they break down in generic cases. On the other hand, the action in the second order formulation could be rewritten in the form of a decoupled AdS3 bi-gravity. Moreover, the entropy of the black hole with the spin-2 hair could be reproduced from the AdS3 bi-gravity in the Euclidean path-integral formalism.

Phase Structure of Higher Spin Black Hole

In this paper, we investigate the phase structures of the black holes with one single higher spin hair, focusing specifically on the spin 3 and spin tilde 4 black holes. Based on dimensional analysis and the requirement of having consistent thermodynamics, we derive an universal formula relating the entropy and the conserved charges for arbitrary AdS3 higher spin black holes. Then we use it to study the phase structure of the higher spin black holes. We find that there are six branches of solutions in the spin 3 gravity, eight branches of solutions in the spin tilde 4 gravity and twelve branches of solutions in the G2 gravity. In each case, all branches are related by a simple angle shift in the entropy functions. In the spin 3 case, we reproduce all the results found before. In the spin tilde 4 case, we find that in the low temperature it is at the BTZ branch while in the high temperature it transits to one of two other branches, depending on the signature of the chemical potential, a reflection of charge conjugate asymmetry found before.

Black holes in Truncated Higher Spin AdS$_3$ Gravity

We study the higher spin black holes in a truncated version of higher spin gravity in $AdS_3$. This theory contains only finite number of even spins s=2,4,...,2N. We mainly focus on the simplest case, so-called (Type I and II) spin ${\tilde 4}$ gravity, which contains only spin 2 and spin 4 fields. This spin ${\tilde 4}$ gravity is as simple as spin 3 gravity, thus provides another example to test various ideas on higher spin gravity. We find that the asymptotical symmetry of this spin ${\tilde 4}$ gravity is a classical W(2,4)-symmetry. Moreover, we study the black hole solution with pure spin 4 hair and discuss its thermodynamics. One important feature of this black hole is that its entropy could be written in compact forms. Furthermore, we investigate a $G_2$ generated higher spin gravity. This higher spin gravity only contains spin 2 and spin 6 fields which makes it different from other kinds of higher spin gravity. We find the corresponding black hole with spin 6 hair, and discuss its thermodynamics analytically. It turns out that the black holes with spin 4 or spin 6 hair constructed in this paper are the only black holes with single higher spin hair, besides the spin 3 black hole found in arXiv:1103.4304.

Classical Aspects of Higher Spin Topologically Massive Gravity

We study the classical solutions of three dimensional topologically massive gravity (TMG) and its higher spin generalization, in the first order formulation. The action of higher spin TMG has been proposed in arXiv:1110.5113 to be of a Chern-Simons-like form. The equations of motion are more complicated than the ones in pure higher spin AdS$_3$ gravity, but are still tractable. As all the solutions in higher spin gravity are automatically the solutions of higher spin TMG, we focus on other solutions. We manage to find the AdS pp-wave solutions with higher spin hair, and find that the nonvanishing higher spin fields may or may not modify the pp-wave geometry. In order to discuss the warped spacetime, we introduce the notion of special Killing vector, which is defined to be the symmetry on the frame-like fields. We reproduce various warped spacetimes of TMG in our framework, with the help of special Killing vectors.

High Spin Topologically Massive Gravity

We propose an action to describe high spin topologically massive gravity with a negative cosmological constant. With the frame-like fields and spin connections being combined into two gauge fields, the action includes two gauge field Chern-Simons actions with different levels, and also a linear term proportional to the difference of the gauge field strengths. Such linear term play the role of imposing the torsion free conditions for high spin fields. We discuss the gauge symmetry of this action and study the fluctuations around the AdS$_3$ vacuum. We show how to relate the the fluctuations of the gauge field to the Frondal fields, using the gauge symmetry. For the gauge group $SL(n,R)\times SL(n,R)$, we find that the fluctuations of all high spin fields up to spin $n$ satisfy third order differential equations, and hence there generically exist massive traceless and trace mode for every spin.

Spin-3 Topological Massive Gravity

In this paper, we study the spin-3 topological massive gravity(TMG), paying special attention to its properties at the chiral point. We propose an action describing the high spin fields coupled to TMG. We discuss the spin-3 fluctuations around the AdS$_3$ vacuum and find that there is an extra local massive mode, besides the left-moving and right-moving boundary massless modes. At the chiral point, such extra mode becomes massless and degenerates with the left-moving mode. We show that at the chiral point the only degrees of freedom in the theory are the boundary right-moving graviton and spin-3 field. We conjecture that spin-3 chiral gravity with Brown-Henneaux boundary condition is holographically dual to 2D chiral CFT with classical $W_3$ algebra and central charge $c_R=3l/G$.

Hidden Conformal Symmetry and Quasi-normal Modes

We provide an algebraic way to calculate the quasi-normal modes of a black hole, which possesses a hidden conformal symmetry. We construct an infinite tower of quasi-normal modes from the highest-weight mode, in a simple and elegant way. For the scalar, the hidden conformal symmetry manifest itself in the fact that the scalar Laplacian could be rewritten in terms of the $SL(2,R)$ quadratic Casimir. For the vector and the tensor, the hidden conformal symmetry acts on them through Lie derivatives. We show that for three-dimensional black holes, with appropriate combination of the components the radial equations of the vector and the tensor could be written in terms of the Lie-induced quadratic Casimir. This allows the algebraic construction of the quasi-normal modes feasible. Our results are in good agreement with the previous study.

Hidden Conformal Symmetry of Extremal Black Holes

We study the hidden conformal symmetry of the extremal black holes. We introduce a new set of conformal coordinates to write the $SL(2,R)$ generators. We find that the Laplacian of the scalar field in many extremal black holes could be written in terms of the $SL(2,R)$ quadratic Casimir. This suggests that there exist dual CFT descriptions of these black holes. From the conformal coordinates, the temperatures of the dual CFTs could be read directly. For the extremal black hole, the Hawking temperature is vanishing. Correspondingly, only the left (right) temperature of the dual CFT is non-vanishing and the excitations of the other sector are suppressed. In the probe limit, we compute the scattering amplitudes of the scalar off the extremal black holes and find perfect agreement with the CFT prediction.

On Holographic description of the Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS black holes

In this paper, we study the holographic description of the generic four-dimensional non-extremal Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS black holes. We find that if focusing on the near-horizon region, for the massless scalar scattering in the low-frequency limit, there exists hidden conformal symmetry on the solution space. Similar to the Kerr case, this suggests that the Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS black hole is dual to a two-dimensional CFT with central charges $c_L=c_R=\frac{6a(r_++r_\ast)}{k}$ and temperatures $T_L=\frac{k(r_+^2+r_\ast^2+2a^2)}{4πaΞ(r_++r_\ast)}, T_R=\frac{k(r_+-r_\ast)}{4πaΞ}$. The macroscopic Bekenstein-Hawking entropy could be recovered from the microscopic counting in dual CFT via the Cardy formula. Using the Minkowski prescription, we compute the real-time correlators of the scalar, photon and graviton in near horizon geometry of near extremal Kerr-AdS-dS black hole. In all these cases, the retarded Green's function and the corresponding absorption cross section are in perfect match with CFT prediction. We further discuss the low-frequency scattering of a charged scalar by a Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS black hole and find the dual CFT description.

Real-time Correlators and Hidden Conformal Symmetry in Kerr/CFT Correspondence

In this paper, we study the real-time correlators in Kerr/CFT, in the low frequency limit of generic non-extremal Kerr(-Newman) black holes. From the low frequency scattering of Kerr-Newman black holes, we show that for the uncharged scalar scattering, there exists hidden conformal symmetry on the solution space. Similar to Kerr case, this suggests that the Kerr-Newman black hole is dual to a two-dimensional CFT with central charges $c_L=c_R=12J$ and temperatures $T_L=\frac{(r_++r_-)-Q^2/M}{4πa}, T_R=\frac{r_+-r_-}{4πa}$. Using the Minkowski prescription, we compute the real-time correlators of charged scalar and find perfect match with CFT prediction. We further discuss the low-frequency scattering of photons and gravitons by Kerr black hole and find that their retarded Green's functions are in good agreement with CFT prediction. Our study supports the idea that the hidden conformal symmetry in the solution space is essential to Kerr/CFT correspondence.
