Construction and classification of novel BPS Wilson loops in quiver Chern-Simons-matter theories

In this paper we construct and classify novel Drukker-Trancanelli (DT) type BPS Wilson loops along infinite straight lines and circles in $\mathcal N=2,3$ quiver superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theories, Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) theory, and $\mathcal N=4$ orbifold ABJM theory. Generally we have four classes of Wilson loops, and all of them preserve the same supersymmetries as the BPS Gaiotto-Yin (GY) type Wilson loops. There are several free complex parameters in the DT type BPS Wilson loops, and for two classes of Wilson loops in ABJM theory and $\mathcal N=4$ orbifold ABJM theory there are supersymmetry enhancements at special values of the parameters. We check that the differences of the DT type and GY type Wilson loops are $Q$-exact with $Q$ being some supercharges preserved by both the DT type and GY type Wilson loops. The results would be useful to calculate vacuum expectation values of the DT type Wilson loops in matrix models if they are still BPS quantum mechanically.

Exact results for Wilson loops in orbifold ABJM theory

We investigate the exact results for circular 1/4 and 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in the $d=3$ ${\mathcal N}=4$ super Chern-Simons-matter theory that could be obtained by orbifolding Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) theory. The partition function of the ${\mathcal N}=4$ orbifold ABJM theory has been computed previously in the literature. In this paper, we re-derive it using a slightly different method. We calculate the vacuum expectation values of the circular 1/4 BPS Wilson loops in fundamental representation and of circular 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in arbitrary representations. We use both the saddle point approach and Fermi gas approach. The results for Wilson loops are in accord with the available gravity results.

Holographic Description of 2D Conformal Block in Semi-classical Limit

In this paper, we study the holographic descriptions of the conformal block of heavy operators in two-dimensional large c conformal field theory. We consider the case that the operators are pairwise inserted such that the distance between the operators in a pair is much smaller than the others. In this case, each pair of heavy operators creates a conical defect in the bulk. We propose that the conformal block is dual to the on-shell action of three dimensional geometry with conical defects in the semi-classical limit. We show that the variation of the on-shell action with respect to the conical angle is equal to the length of the corresponding conical defect. We derive this differential relation on the conformal block in the field theory by introducing two extra light operators as both the probe and the perturbation. Our study also suggests that the area law of the holographic Renyi entropy must holds for a large class of states generated by a finite number of heavy operators insertion.

Novel BPS Wilson loops in three-dimensional quiver Chern-Simons-matter theories

We show that generic three-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ quiver super Chern-Simons-matter theories admit Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Drukker-Trancanelli (DT) type Wilson loops. We investigate both Wilson loops along timelike infinite straight lines in Minkowski spacetime and circular Wilson loops in Euclidean space. In Aharnoy-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena theory, we find that generic BPS DT type Wilson loops preserve the same number of supersymmetries as Gaiotto-Yin type Wilson loops. There are several free parameters for generic BPS DT type Wilson loops in the construction, and supersymmetry enhancement for Wilson loops happens for special values of the parameters.

On one-loop entanglement entropy of two short intervals from OPE of twist operators

We investigate the one-loop entanglement entropy of two short intervals with small cross ratio $x$ on a complex plane in two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) using operator product expansion of twist operators. We focus on the one-loop entanglement entropy instead of the general order $n$ Rényi entropy, and this makes the calculation much easier. We consider the contributions of stress tensor to order $x^{10}$, contributions of $W_3$ operator to order $x^{12}$, and contributions of $W_4$ operator to order $x^{14}$. The CFT results agree with the ones in gravity.

Short interval expansion of Rényi entropy on torus

We investigate the short interval expansion of the Rényi entropy for two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) on a torus. We require the length of the interval $\ell$ to be small with respect to the spatial and temporal sizes of the torus. The operator product expansion of the twist operators allows us to compute the short interval expansion of the Rényi entropy at any temperature. In particular, we pay special attention to the large $c$ CFTs dual to the AdS$_3$ gravity and its cousins. At both low and high temperature limits, we read the Rényi entropies to order $\ell^6$, and find good agreements with holographic results. Moreover, the expansion allows us to read $1/c$ contribution, which is hard to get by expanding the thermal density matrix. We generalize the study to the case with the chemical potential as well.

Thermality and excited state Rényi entropy in two-dimensional CFT

We evaluate one-interval Rényi entropy and entanglement entropy for the excited states of two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) on a cylinder, and examine their differences from the ones for the thermal state. We assume the interval to be short so that we can use operator product expansion (OPE) of twist operators to calculate Rényi entropy in terms of sum of one-point functions of OPE blocks. We find that the entanglement entropy for highly excited state and thermal state behave the same way after appropriate identification of the conformal weight of the state with the temperature. However, there exists no such universal identification for the Rényi entropy in the short-interval expansion. Therefore, the highly excited state does not look thermal when comparing its Rényi entropy to the thermal state one. As the Rényi entropy captures the higher moments of the reduced density matrix but the entanglement entropy only the average, our results imply that the emergence of thermality depends on how refined we look into the entanglement structure of the underlying pure excited state.

BPS Wilson loops in Minkowski spacetime and Euclidean space

We give evidence that spacelike BPS Wilson loops do not exist in Minkowski spacetime. We show that spacelike Wilson loops in Minkowski spacetime cannot preserve any supersymmetries, in $d = 4$ $\mathcal N = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory, $d = 3$ $\mathcal N = 2$ super Chern-Simons-matter theory, and $d = 3$ $\mathcal N = 6$ Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena theory. We not only show this using infinite straight lines and circles as examples, but also we give proofs for general curves. We attribute this to the conflicts of reality conditions of the spinors. However, spacelike Wilson loops do exist in Euclidean space. There are both BPS Wilson loops along infinite straight lines and circular BPS Wilson loops. This is because the reality conditions of the spinors are lost after Wick rotation. The result is reasonable in view of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Holographic Rényi entropy for two-dimensional N=(1,1) superconformal field theory

In this paper we investigate the holographic Rényi entropy in $\mathcal N=1$ supergravity (SUGRA) in AdS$_3$ spacetime, which is dual to the two-dimensional $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ superconformal field theory (SCFT). We consider both cases of two short intervals on a line with zero temperature and one interval on a circle with low temperature. In SUGRA side we consider contributions of both graviton and gravitino, and in SCFT side we consider contributions of both stress tensor $T$, $\bar T$ and their superpartners $G$, $\bar G$. We find matches between SUGRA and SCFT results.

Supersymmetric Wilson loops in N=4 super Chern-Simons-matter theory

We investigate the supersymmetric Wilson loops in $d=3$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Chern-Simons-matter theory obtained from non-chiral orbifold of ABJM theory. We work in both Minkowski spacetime and Euclidean space, and we construct 1/4 and 1/2 BPS Wilson loops. We also provide a complete proof that the difference between 1/4 and 1/2 Wilson loops is $Q$-exact with $Q$ being some supercharge that is preserved by both the 1/4 and 1/2 Wilson loops. This plays an important role in applying the localization techniques to compute the vacuum expectation values of Wilson loops. We also study the M-theory dual of the 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loop.

Holographic Rényi entropy for CFT with $W$ symmetry

In this paper we investigate the holographic Rényi entropy of two disjoint intervals on complex plane with small cross ratio $x$ for conformal field theory with $W$ symmetry in the ground state, which could be dual to a higher spin AdS$_3$ gravity. We focus on the cases of $W_3$ and $W_4$ symmetries. In order to see the nontrivial contributions from the $W$ fields, we calculate the Rényi entropy in the expansion of $x$ to order $x^8$ in both the gravity and the CFT sides. In the gravity side the classical contributions to the entanglement entropy is still given by the Ryu-Takayanagi area formula under the reasonable assumption, while the 1-loop quantum corrections have to take into account of the contributions not only from massless gravitons, but also from massless higher spin fields. In the CFT side we still use the operator product expansion of twist operators in the small interval limit, but now we need to consider the quasiprimary fields constructed from $W$ fields, besides the ones from Virasoro Verma module. In the large central charge limit, we obtain the classical, 1-loop, 2-loop, and 3-loop parts of the Rényi entropy. The classical and 1-loop results in the gravity and the CFT sides are in exact match. This confirms the higher spin gravity/CFT correspondence, and also supports the holographic computation of Rényi entanglement entropy, including the quantum correction, in both the AdS$_3$ gravity and the higher spin AdS$_3$ gravity.

Holographic Rényi entropy in AdS$_3$/LCFT$_2$ correspondence

The recent study in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence shows that the tree level contribution and 1-loop correction of holographic Rényi entanglement entropy (HRE) exactly match the direct CFT computation in the large central charge limit. This allows the Rényi entanglement entropy to be a new window to study the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this paper we generalize the study of Rényi entanglement entropy in pure AdS$_3$ gravity to the massive gravity theories at the critical points. For the cosmological topological massive gravity (CTMG), the dual conformal field theory (CFT) could be a chiral conformal field theory or a logarithmic conformal field theory (LCFT), depending on the asymptotic boundary conditions imposed. In both cases, by studying the short interval expansion of the Rényi entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals with small cross ratio $x$, we find that the classical and 1-loop HRE are in exact match with the CFT results, up to order $x^6$. To this order, the difference between the massless graviton and logarithmic mode can be seen clearly. Moreover, for the cosmological new massive gravity (CNMG) at critical point, which could be dual to a logarithmic CFT as well, we find the similar agreement in the CNMG/LCFT correspondence. Furthermore we read the 2-loop correction of graviton and logarithmic mode to HRE from CFT computation. It has distinct feature from the one in pure AdS$_3$ gravity.

Thermodynamics of two-dimensional conformal field theory dual to black holes

In this note we investigate the first law of thermodynamics of the two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) that is dual to black holes. We start from the Cardy formula and get the CFT thermodynamics with minimal reasonable assumptions. We use both the microcanonical ensemble and canonical ensemble versions of the Cardy formula. In the black hole/CFT correspondence the black hole is dual to a CFT with excitations, and the black hole mass $M$ and charge $N$ correspond to the energy and charge of the excited CFT. The CFT left- and right-moving central charges $c_{L,R}$ should be quantized, and so we assume that they are mass-independent. Also we assume the difference of the left- and right-moving sector levels $N_L-N_R$ is mass-independent dual to level matching condition. The thermodynamics of two-dimensional CFT we get is universal and supports the thermodynamics method of black hole/CFT correspondence.

Aspects of Warped AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ Correspondence

In this paper we apply the thermodynamics method to investigate the holographic pictures for the BTZ black hole, the spacelike and the null warped black holes in three-dimensional topologically massive gravity (TMG) and new massive gravity (NMG). Even though there are higher derivative terms in these theories, the thermodynamics method is still effective. It gives consistent results with the ones obtained by using asymptotical symmetry group (ASG) analysis. In doing the ASG analysis we develop a brute-force realization of the Barnich-Brandt-Compere formalism with Mathematica code, which also allows us to calculate the masses and the angular momenta of the black holes. In particular, we propose the warped AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence in the new massive gravity, which states that quantum gravity in the warped spacetime could holographically dual to a two-dimensional CFT with $c_R=c_L=\f{24}{Gm\b^2\sr{2(21-4\b^2)}}$.

Electromagnetic Duality in Dyonic RN/CFT Correspondence

The area law of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole suggests that the black hole should have a lower-dimensional holographic description. It has been found recently that such holographic pictures could be set up from the study of the thermodynamics of both outer and inner horizons for a large class of rotating and charged black holes. For a four-dimensional dyonic Reissner-Nordström black hole, its thermodynamics indicates that it has multiple holographic pictures not only the electric and magnetic ones corresponding to the conserved electric and magnetic charges carried by the black hole, but also the more generic ones generated by the $SL(2,Z)$ transformations. We show that this $SL(2,Z)$ group originates from the underlying electromagnetic duality symmetry in the Einstein-Maxwell theory. It turns out that the thermodynamics of the black hole not only encodes the information of holographic pictures; moreover it could reflect the symmetries of the underlying theory.

Note on generalized gravitational entropy in Lovelock gravity

The recently proposed gravitational entropy generalize the usual black hole entropy to Euclidean solutions without U(1) symmetry in the framework of Einstein gravity. The entropy of such smooth configuration is given by the area of minimal surface, therefore explaining the Ryu-Takayanagi formula of holographic entanglement entropy. In this note we investigate the generalized gravitational entropy for general Lovelock gravity in arbitrary dimensions. We use the replica trick and consider the Euclidean bulk spacetime with conical singularity localized at a codimension two surface. We obtain a constraint equation for the surface by requiring the bulk equation of motion to be of good behavior. When the bulk spacetime is maximally symmetric, the constraints show that the traces of the extrinsic curvatures of the surface are vanishing, i.e. the surface has to be geometrically a minimal surface. However the constraint equation cannot be obtained by the variation of the known functional for holographic entanglement entropy in Lovelock gravity.

On short interval expansion of Rényi entropy

Rényi entanglement entropy provides a new window to study the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this paper we consider the short interval expansion of Rényi entanglement entropy in two-dimensional conformal field theory. This amounts to do the operator product expansion of the twist operators. We focus on the vacuum Verma module and consider the quasiprimary operators constructed from the stress tensors. After obtaining the expansion coefficients of the twist operators to level 6 in vacuum Verma module, we compute the leading contributions to the Rényi entropy, to order 6 in the short interval expansion. In the case of one short interval on cylinder, we reproduce the first several leading contributions to the Rényi entropy. In the case of two short disjoint intervals with a small cross ratio $x$, we obtain not only the classical and 1-loop quantum contributions to the Rényi entropy to order $x^6$, both of which are in perfect match with the ones found in gravity, but also the leading $1/c$ contributions, which corresponds to 2-loop corrections in the bulk.

RN/CFT Correspondence From Thermodynamics

Recent studies suggest that in the Kerr/CFT correspondence, much universal information of the dual CFT, including the central charges and the temperatures, is fully encoded in the thermodynamics of the outer and inner horizons of the Kerr(-Newman) black holes. In this paper, we study holographic descriptions of Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes in arbitrary dimensions by using the thermodynamics method. We refine the thermodynamics method proposed in arXiv:1206.2015 by imposing the "quantization" condition so that we can fix the ambiguity in determining the central charges of the dual CFT of RN black holes. Using the refined thermodynamics method, we find the holographic CFT duals for the RN black holes, and confirm these pictures by using conventional analysis of asymptotic symmetry group and the hidden conformal symmetry in the low-frequency scattering. In particular, we revisit the four-dimensional dyonic RN black hole and find a novel magnetic picture, besides the known electric CFT dual picture. We show how to generate a class of dual dyonic pictures by $SL(2,Z)$ transformations.

Thermodynamics in Black-hole/CFT Correspondence

The area law of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole suggests that the black hole should have a lower-dimensional holographic description. It has been found recently that a large class of rotating and charged black holes could be holographically described a two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory (CFT). We show that the universal information of the dual CFT, including the central charges and the temperatures, is fully encoded in the thermodynamics laws of both outer and inner horizons. These laws, characterizing how the black hole responds under the perturbation, allows us to read different dual pictures with respect to different kinds of perturbations. The remarkable effectiveness of this thermodynamics method suggest that the inner horizon could play a key role in the study of holographic description of the black hole.

Holographic Descriptions of Black Rings

In this paper, we investigate the holographic descriptions of two kinds of black rings, the neutral doubly rotating black ring and the dipole charged black ring. For generic nonextremal black rings, the information of holographic CFT duals, including the central charges and left- and right-moving temperatures, could be read from the thermodynamics at the outer and inner horizons, as suggested in arXiv:1206.2015. To confirm these pictures, we study the extreme black rings in the well-established formalism. We compute the central charges of dual CFTs by doing asymptotic symmetry group analysis in the stretched horizon formalism, and find exact agreements. Moreover, we study the superradiant scattering of a scalar field off the near-extremal black rings and obtain the scattering amplitudes, which are in good match with the CFT predictions.

Notes on Self-dual Warped dS$_3$ Spacetime

In this paper, we investigate the warped dS/CFT correspondence of the self-dual warped dS$_3$ spacetime, which is a solution of three-dimensional topologically massive gravity (TMG) with a positive cosmological constant. We discuss its thermodynamics at two cosmological horizons. We propose that the self-dual warped dS$_3$ spacetime is holographically dual to a chiral conformal field theory. We analytically calculate the quasinormal modes of scalar, vector, tensor, and spinor perturbations under the self-dual warped dS$_3$ spacetime. It turns out that the frequencies of the quasinormal modes could be identified with the poles in the thermal boundary-boundary correlators.

Thermodynamics of Black Hole Horizons and Kerr/CFT Correspondence

In this paper we investigate the thermodynamics of the inner horizon and its implication on the holographic description of the black hole. We focus on the black holes with two physical horizons. Under reasonable assumption, we prove that the first law of thermodynamics of the outer horizon always indicates that of the inner horizon. As a result, the fact that the area product being mass-independent is equivalent to the relation $T_+S_+=T_-S_-$, with $T_\pm$ and $S_\pm$ being the Hawking temperatures and the entropies of the outer and inner horizon respectively. We find that the mass-independence of area product breaks down in general Myers-Perry black holes with spacetime dimension $d\geq6$ and Kerr-AdS black holes with $d\geq4$. Moreover we discuss the implication of the first laws of the outer and inner horizons on the thermodynamics of the right- and left-moving sectors of dual CFT in Kerr/CFT correspondence. We show that once the relation $T_+S_+=T_-S_-$ is satisfied, the central charges of two sectors must be same. Furthermore from the thermodynamics relations, we read the dimensionless temperatures of microscopic CFT, which are in exact agreement with the ones obtained from hidden conformal symmetry in the low frequency scattering off the black holes, and then determine the central charges. This method works well in well-known cases in Kerr/CFT correspondence, and reproduce successfully the holographic pictures for 4D Kerr-Newman and 5D Kerr black holes. We go on to predict the central charges and temperatures of a possible holographic CFT description dual to 5D doubly rotating black ring.

Boundary Conditions for NHEK through Effective Action Approach

We study the asymptotic symmetry group(ASG) of the near horizon geometry of extreme Kerr black hole through the effective action approach developed in 1007.1031. By requiring a finite boundary effective action, we derive a new set of asymptotic Killing vectors and boundary conditions, which are much more relaxed than the ones proposed in 0907.0303, and still allow a copy of conformal group as its ASG. In the covariant formalism, the asymptotic charges are finite, with the corresponding central charge vanishing. By using the quasi-local charge and introducing a plausible cut-off, we find that the higher order terms of the asymptotic Killing vectors, which could not be determined through the effective action approach, contribute to the central charge as well. We also show that the boundary conditions suggested in 0809.4266 lead to a divergent first order boundary effective action.

General Hidden Conformal Symmetry of 4D Kerr-Newman and 5D Kerr Black Holes

There are two known CFT duals, namely the J-picture and the Q-picture, for a four-dimensional Kerr-Newman black hole, corresponding to the angular momentum $J$ and the electric charge $Q$ respectively. In our recent study we found a one-parameter class of CFT duals for extremal Kerr-Newman black hole, connecting these two pictures. In this paper we study these novel CFT duals for the generic non-extremal Kerr-Newman black hole. We investigate the hidden conformal symmetry in the low frequency scattering off Kerr-Newman black hole, from which the dual temperatures could be read. We find that there still exists a hidden conformal symmetry for a general CFT dual. We reproduce the correct Bekenstein-Hawking entropy from the Cardy formula, assuming the form of the central charge being invariant. Moreover we compute the retarded Green's function in the general CFT dual picture and find it is in good match with the CFT prediction. Furthermore we discuss the hidden conformal symmetries of the five dimensional Kerr black hole and obtain the similar evidence to support the general dual CFT pictures.

Novel CFT Duals for Extreme Black Holes

In this paper, we study the CFT duals for extreme black holes in the stretched horizon formalism. We consider the extremal RN, Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS, as well as the higher dimensional Kerr-AdS-dS black holes. In all these cases, we reproduce the well-established CFT duals. Actually we show that for stationary extreme black holes, the stretched horizon formalism always gives rise to the same dual CFT pictures as the ones suggested by ASG of corresponding near horizon geometries. Furthermore, we propose new CFT duals for 4D Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS and higher dimensional Kerr-AdS-dS black holes. We find that every dual CFT is defined with respect to a rotation in certain angular direction, along which the translation defines a U(1) Killing symmetry. In the presence of two sets of U(1) symmetry, the novel CFT duals are generated by the modular group $SL(2,\mb Z)$, and for $n$ sets of U(1) symmetry there are general CFT duals generated by T-duality group $SL(n,\mb Z)$.

Quasi-normal Modes of Extremal Black Holes from Hidden Conformal Symmetry

In this paper, we construct the quasi-normal modes of three-dimensional extremal black holes in an algebraic way. We show that the infinite towers of the quasi-normal modes of scalar, vector and tensor could be constructed as the descendents of the highest weight modes. Our investigation shows that the hidden conformal symmetry suggested in arXiv:1007.4269 is an intrinsic property of the extremal black hole. Moreover, we notice that we need to fix the freedom in defining the local vector fields and find the right hidden conformal symmetry to obtain the physical quasi-normal modes.

Quasinormal Modes and Hidden Conformal Symmetry of Warped dS$_3$ Black Hole

In this paper, we analytically calculate the quasinormal modes of scalar, vector, tensor, and spinor perturbations of the warped dS$_3$ black hole. There are two horizons for the warped dS$_3$ black hole, namely, the black hole horizon $r_b$ and the cosmological horizon $r_c$. In the calculation, we impose the ingoing boundary condition at the black hole horizon and the outgoing boundary condition at the cosmological horizon. We also investigate the hidden conformal symmetry of the warped dS$_3$ black hole in the region between the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon $r_b<r<r_c$. We use the hidden conformal symmetry to construct the quasinormal modes in an algebraic way and find that the results agree with the analytically ones. It turns out that the frequencies of the quasinormal modes could be identified with the poles in the thermal boundary-boundary correlators.

Hidden Conformal Symmetry of Extremal Black Holes

We study the hidden conformal symmetry of the extremal black holes. We introduce a new set of conformal coordinates to write the $SL(2,R)$ generators. We find that the Laplacian of the scalar field in many extremal black holes could be written in terms of the $SL(2,R)$ quadratic Casimir. This suggests that there exist dual CFT descriptions of these black holes. From the conformal coordinates, the temperatures of the dual CFTs could be read directly. For the extremal black hole, the Hawking temperature is vanishing. Correspondingly, only the left (right) temperature of the dual CFT is non-vanishing and the excitations of the other sector are suppressed. In the probe limit, we compute the scattering amplitudes of the scalar off the extremal black holes and find perfect agreement with the CFT prediction.
