FocalPolicy: Frequency-Optimized Chunking and Locally Anchored Flow Matching for Coherent Visuomotor Policy

Visuomotor policies aim to learn complex manipulation tasks from expert demonstrations. However, generating smooth and coherent trajectories remains challenging, as it requires balancing proximal precision with distal foresight. Existing approaches typically focus on optimizing intra-chunk action distributions, often neglecting the inter-chunk coherence. Consequently, inter-chunk discontinuities significantly impede the learning of coherent long-horizon actions. To overcome this limitation and achieve a synergetic balance between precision and foresight, we propose FocalPolicy, a foresight-aware visuomotor policy that combines Frequency-Optimized Chunking with Locally Anchored flow matching. We introduce a foresight composite objective that supervises time-domain alignment within the proximal actions while regularizing frequency-domain structure over multiple future action chunks to improve cross-chunk coherence. To efficiently learn complex action distributions, we design locally anchored campling to enhance target signal propagation efficiency during consistency flow matching training. Extensive experiments demonstrate that FocalPolicy outperforms existing approaches and confirm the generalizability of our modules to other baselines. Project website: https://focalpolicy.github.io/

Few-Shot Object Detection by Knowledge Distillation Using Bag-of-Visual-Words Representations

While fine-tuning based methods for few-shot object detection have achieved remarkable progress, a crucial challenge that has not been addressed well is the potential class-specific overfitting on base classes and sample-specific overfitting on novel classes. In this work we design a novel knowledge distillation framework to guide the learning of the object detector and thereby restrain the overfitting in both the pre-training stage on base classes and fine-tuning stage on novel classes. To be specific, we first present a novel Position-Aware Bag-of-Visual-Words model for learning a representative bag of visual words (BoVW) from a limited size of image set, which is used to encode general images based on the similarities between the learned visual words and an image. Then we perform knowledge distillation based on the fact that an image should have consistent BoVW representations in two different feature spaces. To this end, we pre-learn a feature space independently from the object detection, and encode images using BoVW in this space. The obtained BoVW representation for an image can be considered as distilled knowledge to guide the learning of object detector: the extracted features by the object detector for the same image are expected to derive the consistent BoVW representations with the distilled knowledge. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our method and demonstrate the superiority over other state-of-the-art methods.

Tracking-by-Counting: Using Network Flows on Crowd Density Maps for Tracking Multiple Targets

State-of-the-art multi-object tracking~(MOT) methods follow the tracking-by-detection paradigm, where object trajectories are obtained by associating per-frame outputs of object detectors. In crowded scenes, however, detectors often fail to obtain accurate detections due to heavy occlusions and high crowd density. In this paper, we propose a new MOT paradigm, tracking-by-counting, tailored for crowded scenes. Using crowd density maps, we jointly model detection, counting, and tracking of multiple targets as a network flow program, which simultaneously finds the global optimal detections and trajectories of multiple targets over the whole video. This is in contrast to prior MOT methods that either ignore the crowd density and thus are prone to errors in crowded scenes, or rely on a suboptimal two-step process using heuristic density-aware point-tracks for matching targets. Our approach yields promising results on public benchmarks of various domains including people tracking, cell tracking, and fish tracking.

Pixel-wise Orthogonal Decomposition for Color Illumination Invariant and Shadow-free Image

In this paper, we propose a novel, effective and fast method to obtain a color illumination invariant and shadow-free image from a single outdoor image. Different from state-of-the-art methods for shadow-free image that either need shadow detection or statistical learning, we set up a linear equation set for each pixel value vector based on physically-based shadow invariants, deduce a pixel-wise orthogonal decomposition for its solutions, and then get an illumination invariant vector for each pixel value vector on an image. The illumination invariant vector is the unique particular solution of the linear equation set, which is orthogonal to its free solutions. With this illumination invariant vector and Lab color space, we propose an algorithm to generate a shadow-free image which well preserves the texture and color information of the original image. A series of experiments on a diverse set of outdoor images and the comparisons with the state-of-the-art methods validate our method.
