DecoRec: Decomposed 3D Scene Reconstruction from Single-View Images via Object-Level Diffusion

In this paper, we introduce \textit{DecoRec}, a novel system designed to elevate single-view 2D images to a decomposed 3D scene mesh. Current methods for single-view scene reconstruction typically rely on object retrieval or the regression of coarse 3D voxels or surfaces, leading to inaccuracies in capturing the appearance and geometry of the input image. The lack of high-quality large-scale scene-level datasets further complicates direct 3D scene generation from single-view images. To achieve high-quality 3D scene generation from a single-view image, DecoRec takes advantage of recent diffusion-based single-view object reconstruction methods to reconstruct individual objects separately. Subsequently, a refinement pipeline is proposed to effectively merge these reconstructed objects, enhancing appearance and geometry through a differentiable rendering technique and diffusion-guided refinement. Our results demonstrate that DecoRec facilitates high-quality single-view scene reconstruction in both geometry and novel synthesis, offering significant benefits for downstream applications like room interior design.

UniBiDex: A Unified Teleoperation Framework for Robotic Bimanual Dexterous Manipulation

We present UniBiDex a unified teleoperation framework for robotic bimanual dexterous manipulation that supports both VRbased and leaderfollower input modalities UniBiDex enables realtime contactrich dualarm teleoperation by integrating heterogeneous input devices into a shared control stack with consistent kinematic treatment and safety guarantees The framework employs nullspace control to optimize bimanual configurations ensuring smooth collisionfree and singularityaware motion across tasks We validate UniBiDex on a longhorizon kitchentidying task involving five sequential manipulation subtasks demonstrating higher task success rates smoother trajectories and improved robustness compared to strong baselines By releasing all hardware and software components as opensource we aim to lower the barrier to collecting largescale highquality human demonstration datasets and accelerate progress in robot learning.

A Generalized Continuous Collision Detection Framework of Polynomial Trajectory for Mobile Robots in Cluttered Environments

In this paper, we introduce a generalized continuous collision detection (CCD) framework for the mobile robot along the polynomial trajectory in cluttered environments including various static obstacle models. Specifically, we find that the collision conditions between robots and obstacles could be transformed into a set of polynomial inequalities, whose roots can be efficiently solved by the proposed solver. In addition, we test different types of mobile robots with various kinematic and dynamic constraints in our generalized CCD framework and validate that it allows the provable collision checking and can compute the exact time of impact. Furthermore, we combine our architecture with the path planner in the navigation system. Benefiting from our CCD method, the mobile robot is able to work safely in some challenging scenarios.

Autofocus for Event Cameras

Focus control (FC) is crucial for cameras to capture sharp images in challenging real-world scenarios. The autofocus (AF) facilitates the FC by automatically adjusting the focus settings. However, due to the lack of effective AF methods for the recently introduced event cameras, their FC still relies on naive AF like manual focus adjustments, leading to poor adaptation in challenging real-world conditions. In particular, the inherent differences between event and frame data in terms of sensing modality, noise, temporal resolutions, etc., bring many challenges in designing an effective AF method for event cameras. To address these challenges, we develop a novel event-based autofocus framework consisting of an event-specific focus measure called event rate (ER) and a robust search strategy called event-based golden search (EGS). To verify the performance of our method, we have collected an event-based autofocus dataset (EAD) containing well-synchronized frames, events, and focal positions in a wide variety of challenging scenes with severe lighting and motion conditions. The experiments on this dataset and additional real-world scenarios demonstrated the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art approaches in terms of efficiency and accuracy.

DiffSRL: Learning Dynamical State Representation for Deformable Object Manipulation with Differentiable Simulator

Dynamic state representation learning is an important task in robot learning. Latent space that can capture dynamics related information has wide application in areas such as accelerating model free reinforcement learning, closing the simulation to reality gap, as well as reducing the motion planning complexity. However, current dynamic state representation learning methods scale poorly on complex dynamic systems such as deformable objects, and cannot directly embed well defined simulation function into the training pipeline. We propose DiffSRL, a dynamic state representation learning pipeline utilizing differentiable simulation that can embed complex dynamics models as part of the end-to-end training. We also integrate differentiable dynamic constraints as part of the pipeline which provide incentives for the latent state to be aware of dynamical constraints. We further establish a state representation learning benchmark on a soft-body simulation system, PlasticineLab, and our model demonstrates superior performance in terms of capturing long-term dynamics as well as reward prediction.

DynamicFilter: an Online Dynamic Objects Removal Framework for Highly Dynamic Environments

Emergence of massive dynamic objects will diversify spatial structures when robots navigate in urban environments. Therefore, the online removal of dynamic objects is critical. In this paper, we introduce a novel online removal framework for highly dynamic urban environments. The framework consists of the scan-to-map front-end and the map-to-map back-end modules. Both the front- and back-ends deeply integrate the visibility-based approach and map-based approach. The experiments validate the framework in highly dynamic simulation scenarios and real-world datasets.

End-to-End Trajectory Distribution Prediction Based on Occupancy Grid Maps

In this paper, we aim to forecast a future trajectory distribution of a moving agent in the real world, given the social scene images and historical trajectories. Yet, it is a challenging task because the ground-truth distribution is unknown and unobservable, while only one of its samples can be applied for supervising model learning, which is prone to bias. Most recent works focus on predicting diverse trajectories in order to cover all modes of the real distribution, but they may despise the precision and thus give too much credit to unrealistic predictions. To address the issue, we learn the distribution with symmetric cross-entropy using occupancy grid maps as an explicit and scene-compliant approximation to the ground-truth distribution, which can effectively penalize unlikely predictions. In specific, we present an inverse reinforcement learning based multi-modal trajectory distribution forecasting framework that learns to plan by an approximate value iteration network in an end-to-end manner. Besides, based on the predicted distribution, we generate a small set of representative trajectories through a differentiable Transformer-based network, whose attention mechanism helps to model the relations of trajectories. In experiments, our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on the Stanford Drone Dataset and Intersection Drone Dataset.

High-resolution Face Swapping via Latent Semantics Disentanglement

We present a novel high-resolution face swapping method using the inherent prior knowledge of a pre-trained GAN model. Although previous research can leverage generative priors to produce high-resolution results, their quality can suffer from the entangled semantics of the latent space. We explicitly disentangle the latent semantics by utilizing the progressive nature of the generator, deriving structure attributes from the shallow layers and appearance attributes from the deeper ones. Identity and pose information within the structure attributes are further separated by introducing a landmark-driven structure transfer latent direction. The disentangled latent code produces rich generative features that incorporate feature blending to produce a plausible swapping result. We further extend our method to video face swapping by enforcing two spatio-temporal constraints on the latent space and the image space. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art image/video face swapping methods in terms of hallucination quality and consistency. Is Lip Region-of-Interest Sufficient for Lipreading?

Lip region-of-interest (ROI) is conventionally used for visual input in the lipreading task. Few works have adopted the entire face as visual input because lip-excluded parts of the face are usually considered to be redundant and irrelevant to visual speech recognition. However, faces contain much more detailed information than lips, such as speakers' head pose, emotion, identity etc. We argue that such information might benefit visual speech recognition if a powerful feature extractor employing the entire face is trained. In this work, we propose to adopt the entire face for lipreading with self-supervised learning. AV-HuBERT, an audio-visual multi-modal self-supervised learning framework, was adopted in our experiments. Our experimental results showed that adopting the entire face achieved 16% relative word error rate (WER) reduction on the lipreading task, compared with the baseline method using lip as visual input. Without self-supervised pretraining, the model with face input achieved a higher WER than that using lip input in the case of limited training data (30 hours), while a slightly lower WER when using large amount of training data (433 hours).

Learn to Predict How Humans Manipulate Large-sized Objects from Interactive Motions

Understanding human intentions during interactions has been a long-lasting theme, that has applications in human-robot interaction, virtual reality and surveillance. In this study, we focus on full-body human interactions with large-sized daily objects and aim to predict the future states of objects and humans given a sequential observation of human-object interaction. As there is no such dataset dedicated to full-body human interactions with large-sized daily objects, we collected a large-scale dataset containing thousands of interactions for training and evaluation purposes. We also observe that an object's intrinsic physical properties are useful for the object motion prediction, and thus design a set of object dynamic descriptors to encode such intrinsic properties. We treat the object dynamic descriptors as a new modality and propose a graph neural network, HO-GCN, to fuse motion data and dynamic descriptors for the prediction task. We show the proposed network that consumes dynamic descriptors can achieve state-of-the-art prediction results and help the network better generalize to unseen objects. We also demonstrate the predicted results are useful for human-robot collaborations.

ModLaNets: Learning Generalisable Dynamics via Modularity and Physical Inductive Bias

Deep learning models are able to approximate one specific dynamical system but struggle at learning generalisable dynamics, where dynamical systems obey the same laws of physics but contain different numbers of elements (e.g., double- and triple-pendulum systems). To relieve this issue, we proposed the Modular Lagrangian Network (ModLaNet), a structural neural network framework with modularity and physical inductive bias. This framework models the energy of each element using modularity and then construct the target dynamical system via Lagrangian mechanics. Modularity is beneficial for reusing trained networks and reducing the scale of networks and datasets. As a result, our framework can learn from the dynamics of simpler systems and extend to more complex ones, which is not feasible using other relevant physics-informed neural networks. We examine our framework for modelling double-pendulum or three-body systems with small training datasets, where our models achieve the best data efficiency and accuracy performance compared with counterparts. We also reorganise our models as extensions to model multi-pendulum and multi-body systems, demonstrating the intriguing reusable feature of our framework.

Monocular Camera-based Complex Obstacle Avoidance via Efficient Deep Reinforcement Learning

Deep reinforcement learning has achieved great success in laser-based collision avoidance works because the laser can sense accurate depth information without too much redundant data, which can maintain the robustness of the algorithm when it is migrated from the simulation environment to the real world. However, high-cost laser devices are not only difficult to deploy for a large scale of robots but also demonstrate unsatisfactory robustness towards the complex obstacles, including irregular obstacles, e.g., tables, chairs, and shelves, as well as complex ground and special materials. In this paper, we propose a novel monocular camera-based complex obstacle avoidance framework. Particularly, we innovatively transform the captured RGB images to pseudo-laser measurements for efficient deep reinforcement learning. Compared to the traditional laser measurement captured at a certain height that only contains one-dimensional distance information away from the neighboring obstacles, our proposed pseudo-laser measurement fuses the depth and semantic information of the captured RGB image, which makes our method effective for complex obstacles. We also design a feature extraction guidance module to weight the input pseudo-laser measurement, and the agent has more reasonable attention for the current state, which is conducive to improving the accuracy and efficiency of the obstacle avoidance policy.

Reinforcement Learned Distributed Multi-Robot Navigation with Reciprocal Velocity Obstacle Shaped Rewards

The challenges to solving the collision avoidance problem lie in adaptively choosing optimal robot velocities in complex scenarios full of interactive obstacles. In this paper, we propose a distributed approach for multi-robot navigation which combines the concept of reciprocal velocity obstacle (RVO) and the scheme of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to solve the reciprocal collision avoidance problem under limited information. The novelty of this work is threefold: (1) using a set of sequential VO and RVO vectors to represent the interactive environmental states of static and dynamic obstacles, respectively; (2) developing a bidirectional recurrent module based neural network, which maps the states of a varying number of surrounding obstacles to the actions directly; (3) developing a RVO area and expected collision time based reward function to encourage reciprocal collision avoidance behaviors and trade off between collision risk and travel time. The proposed policy is trained through simulated scenarios and updated by the actor-critic based DRL algorithm. We validate the policy in complex environments with various numbers of differential drive robots and obstacles. The experiment results demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state-of-art methods and other learning based approaches in terms of the success rate, travel time, and average speed. Towards Making the Most of Multilingual Pretraining for Zero-Shot Neural Machine Translation

This paper demonstrates that multilingual pretraining and multilingual fine-tuning are both critical for facilitating cross-lingual transfer in zero-shot translation, where the neural machine translation (NMT) model is tested on source languages unseen during supervised training. Following this idea, we present SixT+, a strong many-to-English NMT model that supports 100 source languages but is trained with a parallel dataset in only six source languages. SixT+ initializes the decoder embedding and the full encoder with XLM-R large and then trains the encoder and decoder layers with a simple two-stage training strategy. SixT+ achieves impressive performance on many-to-English translation. It significantly outperforms CRISS and m2m-100, two strong multilingual NMT systems, with an average gain of 7.2 and 5.0 BLEU respectively. Additionally, SixT+ offers a set of model parameters that can be further fine-tuned to other unsupervised tasks. We demonstrate that adding SixT+ initialization outperforms state-of-the-art explicitly designed unsupervised NMT models on Si<->En and Ne<->En by over 1.2 average BLEU. When applied to zero-shot cross-lingual abstractive summarization, it produces an average performance gain of 12.3 ROUGE-L over mBART-ft. We conduct detailed analyses to understand the key ingredients of SixT+, including multilinguality of the auxiliary parallel data, positional disentangled encoder, and the cross-lingual transferability of its encoder.

Visual-Tactile Sensing for Real-time Liquid Volume Estimation in Grasping

We propose a deep visuo-tactile model for realtime estimation of the liquid inside a deformable container in a proprioceptive way.We fuse two sensory modalities, i.e., the raw visual inputs from the RGB camera and the tactile cues from our specific tactile sensor without any extra sensor calibrations.The robotic system is well controlled and adjusted based on the estimation model in real time. The main contributions and novelties of our work are listed as follows: 1) Explore a proprioceptive way for liquid volume estimation by developing an end-to-end predictive model with multi-modal convolutional networks, which achieve a high precision with an error of around 2 ml in the experimental validation. 2) Propose a multi-task learning architecture which comprehensively considers the losses from both classification and regression tasks, and comparatively evaluate the performance of each variant on the collected data and actual robotic platform. 3) Utilize the proprioceptive robotic system to accurately serve and control the requested volume of liquid, which is continuously flowing into a deformable container in real time. 4) Adaptively adjust the grasping plan to achieve more stable grasping and manipulation according to the real-time liquid volume prediction.

An Intelligent Self-driving Truck System For Highway Transportation

Recently, there have been many advances in autonomous driving society, attracting a lot of attention from academia and industry. However, existing works mainly focus on cars, extra development is still required for self-driving truck algorithms and models. In this paper, we introduce an intelligent self-driving truck system. Our presented system consists of three main components, 1) a realistic traffic simulation module for generating realistic traffic flow in testing scenarios, 2) a high-fidelity truck model which is designed and evaluated for mimicking real truck response in real-world deployment, 3) an intelligent planning module with learning-based decision making algorithm and multi-mode trajectory planner, taking into account the truck&#39;s constraints, road slope changes, and the surrounding traffic flow. We provide quantitative evaluations for each component individually to demonstrate the fidelity and performance of each part. We also deploy our proposed system on a real truck and conduct real world experiments which shows our system&#39;s capacity of mitigating sim-to-real gap. Crowd-Driven Mapping, Localization and Planning

Navigation in dense crowds is a well-known open problem in robotics with many challenges in mapping, localization, and planning. Traditional solutions consider dense pedestrians as passive/active moving obstacles that are the cause of all troubles: they negatively affect the sensing of static scene landmarks and must be actively avoided for safety. In this paper, we provide a new perspective: the crowd flow locally observed can be treated as a sensory measurement about the surrounding scenario, encoding not only the scene&#39;s traversability but also its social navigation preference. We demonstrate that even using the crowd-flow measurement alone without any sensing about static obstacles, our method still accomplishes good results for mapping, localization, and social-aware planning in dense crowds. Learning-based Optoelectronically Innervated Tactile Finger for Rigid-Soft Interactive Grasping

This paper presents a novel design of a soft tactile finger with omni-directional adaptation using multi-channel optical fibers for rigid-soft interactive grasping. Machine learning methods are used to train a model for real-time prediction of force, torque, and contact using the tactile data collected. We further integrated such fingers in a reconfigurable gripper design with three fingers so that the finger arrangement can be actively adjusted in real-time based on the tactile data collected during grasping, achieving the process of rigid-soft interactive grasping. Detailed sensor calibration and experimental results are also included to further validate the proposed design for enhanced grasping robustness.

Autonomous Social Distancing in Urban Environments using a Quadruped Robot

COVID-19 pandemic has become a global challenge faced by people all over the world. Social distancing has been proved to be an effective practice to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Against this backdrop, we propose that the surveillance robots can not only monitor but also promote social distancing. Robots can be flexibly deployed and they can take precautionary actions to remind people of practicing social distancing. In this paper, we introduce a fully autonomous surveillance robot based on a quadruped platform that can promote social distancing in complex urban environments. Specifically, to achieve autonomy, we mount multiple cameras and a 3D LiDAR on the legged robot. The robot then uses an onboard real-time social distancing detection system to track nearby pedestrian groups. Next, the robot uses a crowd-aware navigation algorithm to move freely in highly dynamic scenarios. The robot finally uses a crowd-aware routing algorithm to effectively promote social distancing by using human-friendly verbal cues to send suggestions to over-crowded pedestrians. We demonstrate and validate that our robot can be operated autonomously by conducting several experiments in various urban scenarios.

DeepMNavigate: Deep Reinforced Multi-Robot Navigation Unifying Local & Global Collision Avoidance

We present a novel algorithm (DeepMNavigate) for global multi-agent navigation in dense scenarios using deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Our approach uses local and global information for each robot from motion information maps. We use a three-layer CNN that takes these maps as input to generate a suitable action to drive each robot to its goal position. Our approach is general, learns an optimal policy using a multi-scenario, multi-state training algorithm, and can directly handle raw sensor measurements for local observations. We demonstrate the performance on dense, complex benchmarks with narrow passages and environments with tens of agents. We highlight the algorithm&#39;s benefits over prior learning methods and geometric decentralized algorithms in complex scenarios.

Keyfilter-Aware Real-Time UAV Object Tracking

Correlation filter-based tracking has been widely applied in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with high efficiency. However, it has two imperfections, i.e., boundary effect and filter corruption. Several methods enlarging the search area can mitigate boundary effect, yet introducing undesired background distraction. Existing frame-by-frame context learning strategies for repressing background distraction nevertheless lower the tracking speed. Inspired by keyframe-based simultaneous localization and mapping, keyfilter is proposed in visual tracking for the first time, in order to handle the above issues efficiently and effectively. Keyfilters generated by periodically selected keyframes learn the context intermittently and are used to restrain the learning of filters, so that 1) context awareness can be transmitted to all the filters via keyfilter restriction, and 2) filter corruption can be repressed. Compared to the state-of-the-art results, our tracker performs better on two challenging benchmarks, with enough speed for UAV real-time applications.

Learning Resilient Behaviors for Navigation Under Uncertainty

Deep reinforcement learning has great potential to acquire complex, adaptive behaviors for autonomous agents automatically. However, the underlying neural network polices have not been widely deployed in real-world applications, especially in these safety-critical tasks (e.g., autonomous driving). One of the reasons is that the learned policy cannot perform flexible and resilient behaviors as traditional methods to adapt to diverse environments. In this paper, we consider the problem that a mobile robot learns adaptive and resilient behaviors for navigating in unseen uncertain environments while avoiding collisions. We present a novel approach for uncertainty-aware navigation by introducing an uncertainty-aware predictor to model the environmental uncertainty, and we propose a novel uncertainty-aware navigation network to learn resilient behaviors in the prior unknown environments. To train the proposed uncertainty-aware network more stably and efficiently, we present the temperature decay training paradigm, which balances exploration and exploitation during the training process. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates that our approach can learn resilient behaviors in diverse environments and generate adaptive trajectories according to environmental uncertainties.

Over-crowdedness Alert! Forecasting the Future Crowd Distribution

In recent years, vision-based crowd analysis has been studied extensively due to its practical applications in real world. In this paper, we formulate a novel crowd analysis problem, in which we aim to predict the crowd distribution in the near future given sequential frames of a crowd video without any identity annotations. Studying this research problem will benefit applications concerned with forecasting crowd dynamics. To solve this problem, we propose a global-residual two-stream recurrent network, which leverages the consecutive crowd video frames as inputs and their corresponding density maps as auxiliary information to predict the future crowd distribution. Moreover, to strengthen the capability of our network, we synthesize scene-specific crowd density maps using simulated data for pretraining. Finally, we demonstrate that our framework is able to predict the crowd distribution for different crowd scenarios and we delve into applications including predicting future crowd count, forecasting high-density region, etc.

Reciprocal Collision Avoidance for General Nonlinear Agents using Reinforcement Learning

Finding feasible and collision-free paths for multiple nonlinear agents is challenging in the decentralized scenarios due to limited available information of other agents and complex dynamics constraints. In this paper, we propose a fast multi-agent collision avoidance algorithm for general nonlinear agents with continuous action space, where each agent observes only positions and velocities of nearby agents. To reduce online computation, we first decompose the multi-agent scenario and solve a two agents collision avoidance problem using reinforcement learning (RL). When extending the trained policy to a multi-agent problem, safety is ensured by introducing the optimal reciprocal collision avoidance (ORCA) as linear constraints and the overall collision avoidance action could be found through simple convex optimization. Most existing RL-based multi-agent collision avoidance algorithms rely on the direct control of agent velocities. In sharp contrasts, our approach is applicable to general nonlinear agents. Realistic simulations based on nonlinear bicycle agent models are performed with various challenging scenarios, indicating a competitive performance of the proposed method in avoiding collisions, congestion and deadlock with smooth trajectories.

Rigid-Soft Interactive Learning for Robust Grasping

Inspired by widely used soft fingers on grasping, we propose a method of rigid-soft interactive learning, aiming at reducing the time of data collection. In this paper, we classify the interaction categories into Rigid-Rigid, Rigid-Soft, Soft-Rigid according to the interaction surface between grippers and target objects. We find experimental evidence that the interaction types between grippers and target objects play an essential role in the learning methods. We use soft, stuffed toys for training, instead of everyday objects, to reduce the integration complexity and computational burden and exploit such rigid-soft interaction by changing the gripper fingers to the soft ones when dealing with rigid, daily-life items such as the Yale-CMU-Berkeley (YCB) objects. With a small data collection of 5K picking attempts in total, our results suggest that such Rigid-Soft and Soft-Rigid interactions are transferable. Moreover, the combination of different grasp types shows better performance on the grasping test. We achieve the best grasping performance at 97.5\% for easy YCB objects and 81.3\% for difficult YCB objects while using a precise grasp with a two-soft-finger gripper to collect training data and power grasp with a four-soft-finger gripper to test.

Time Variable Minimum Torque Trajectory Optimization for Autonomous Excavator

In this paper, we present a minimal torque and time variable trajectory optimization method for autonomous excavator considering the soil-tool interaction. The method formulates the excavation motion generation as a trajectory optimization problem and takes into account geometric, kinematic and dynamics constraints. To generate time-efficient trajectory and improve the overall optimization efficiency, we propose a time variable trajectory optimization mechanism so that the time intervals between the keypoints along the trajectory subject to the optimization. As a result, the method uses few keypoints and reduces the total number of optimization variables. We further introduce a soil-tool interaction force model, which considers the geometric shape of the bucket and the physical properties of the soil. The experimental result on a high fidelity dynamic simulator shows our method can generate feasible trajectories, which satisfy excavation task constraints and are adaptive to different soil conditions.
