Spectral and Hodge theory of `Witt' incomplete cusp edge spaces

Incomplete cusp edges model the behavior of the Weil-Petersson metric on the compactified Riemann moduli space near the interior of a divisor. Assuming such a space is Witt, we construct a fundamental solution to the heat equation, and using a precise description of its asymptotic behavior at the singular set, we prove that the Hodge-Laplacian on differential forms is essentially self-adjoint, with discrete spectrum satisfying Weyl asymptotics. We go on to prove bounds on the growth of L2L^2-harmonic forms at the singular set and to prove a Hodge theorem, namely that the space of L2L^2-harmonic forms is naturally isomorphic to the middle-perversity intersection cohomology. Moreover, we develop an asymptotic expansion for the heat trace near t=0t = 0.

The distribution of phase shifts for semiclassical potentials with polynomial decay

This is the third paper in a series analyzing the asymptotic distribution of the phase shifts in the semiclassical limit. We analyze the distribution of phase shifts, or equivalently, eigenvalues of the scattering matrix, Sh(E)S_h(E), for semiclassical Schrödinger operators on Rd\mathbb{R}^d which are perturbations of the free Hamiltonian by a potential VV with polynomial decay. Our assumption is that V(x)∼∣x∣−αv(x^)V(x) \sim |x|^{-α} v(\hat x) as x→∞x \to \infty, for some α>dα> d, with corresponding derivative estimates. In the semiclassical limit h→0h \to 0, we show that the atomic measure on the unit circle defined by these eigenvalues, after suitable scaling in hh, tends to a measure μμ on S1\mathbb{S}^1. Moreover, μμ is the pushforward from R\mathbb{R} to R/2πZ=S1\mathbb{R} / 2 π\mathbb{Z} = \mathbb{S}^1 of a homogeneous distribution νν of order ββ depending on the dimension dd and the rate of decay αα of the potential function. As a corollary we obtain an asymptotic formula for the accumulation of phase shifts in a sector of S1\mathbb{S}^1. The proof relies on an extension of results of the second author and Wunsch on the classical Hamiltonian dynamics and semiclassical Poisson operator to the class of potentials under consideration here.

Approximation and equidistribution of phase shifts: spherical symmetry

Consider a semiclassical Hamiltonian \begin{equation*} H_{V, h} := h^{2} Δ+ V - E \end{equation*} where h>0h > 0 is a semiclassical parameter, ΔΔ is the positive Laplacian on Rd\mathbb{R}^{d}, VV is a smooth, compactly supported central potential function and E>0E > 0 is an energy level. In this setting the scattering matrix Sh(E)S_h(E) is a unitary operator on L2(Sd−1)L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1}), hence with spectrum lying on the unit circle; moreover, the spectrum is discrete except at 11. We show under certain additional assumptions on the potential that the eigenvalues of Sh(E)S_h(E) can be divided into two classes: a finite number ∼cd(RE/h)d−1\sim c_d (R\sqrt{E}/h)^{d-1} , as h→0h \to 0, where B(0,R)B(0, R) is the convex hull of the support of the potential, that equidistribute around the unit circle, and the remainder that are all very close to 11. Semiclassically, these are related to the rays that meet the support of, and hence are scattered by, the potential, and those that do not meet the support of the potential, respectively. A similar property is shown for the obstacle problem in the case that the obstacle is the ball of radius RR.

Hodge cohomology of some foliated boundary and foliated cusp metrics

For fibred boundary and fibred cusp metrics, Hausel, Hunsicker, and Mazzeo identified the space of L2L^2 harmonic forms of fixed degree with the images of maps between intersection cohomology groups of an associated stratified space obtained by collapsing the fibres of the fibration at infinity onto its base. In the present paper, we obtain a generalization of this result to situations where, rather than a fibration at infinity, there is a Riemannian foliation with compact leaves admitting a resolution by a fibration. If the associated stratified space (obtained now by collapsing the leaves of the foliation) is a Witt space and if the metric considered is a foliated cusp metric, then no such resolution is required.

Equidistribution of phase shifts in semiclassical potential scattering

Consider a semiclassical Hamiltonian H:=h2Δ+V−EH := h^{2} Δ+ V - E where ΔΔ is the positive Laplacian on Rd\mathbb{R}^{d}, V∈C0∞(Rd)V \in C^{\infty}_{0}(\mathbb{R}^{d}) and E>0E > 0 is an energy level. We prove that under an appropriate dynamical hypothesis on the Hamilton flow corresponding to HH, the eigenvalues of the scattering matrix Sh(V)S_{h}(V) define a measure on S1\mathbb{S}^{1} that converges to Lebesgue measure away from 1∈S11 \in \mathbb{S}^{1} as h→0h \to 0.

Potential scattering and the continuity of phase-shifts

Let S(k)S(k) be the scattering matrix for a Schrödinger operator (Laplacian plus potential) on $\RR^n$ with compactly supported smooth potential. It is well known that S(k)S(k) is unitary and that the spectrum of S(k)S(k) accumulates on the unit circle only at 1; moreover, S(k)S(k) depends analytically on kk and therefore its eigenvalues depend analytically on kk provided the values stay away from 1. We give examples of smooth, compactly supported potentials on $\RR^n$ for which (i) the scattering matrix S(k)S(k) does not have 1 as an eigenvalue for any k>0k > 0, and (ii) there exists k0>0k_0 > 0 such that there is an analytic eigenvalue branch e2iδ(k)e^{2iδ(k)} of S(k)convergingto1as converging to 1 as k \downarrow k_0.Thisshowsthattheeigenvaluesofthescatteringmatrix,asafunctionof. This shows that the eigenvalues of the scattering matrix, as a function of k,donotnecessarilyhavecontinuousextensionstooracrossthevalue1.Inparticularthisshowsthata‘micro−Levinsontheorem′fornon−centralpotentialsin, do not necessarily have continuous extensions to or across the value 1. In particular this shows that a `micro-Levinson theorem' for non-central potentials in \RR^3$ claimed in a 1989 paper of R. Newton is incorrect.

Harmonic maps into conic surfaces with cone angles less than 2π2π

We prove the existence and uniqueness of harmonic maps in degree one homotopy classes of closed, orientable surfaces of positive genus, when the target has conic points with cone angles less than 2π2π. For a cone point pp of cone angle less than or equal ππ we show that one can minimize, uniquely, in the relative homotopy class of a homeomorphism sending a fixed point qq in the domain to pp. The latter can be interpreted as minimizing maps from punctured Riemann surfaces.
