A de Sitter no-hair theorem for 3+1d Cosmologies with isometry group forming 2-dimensional orbits

We study, using Mean Curvature Flow methods, 3+1 dimensional cosmologies with a positive cosmological constant, matter satisfying the dominant and the strong energy conditions, and with spatial slices that can be foliated by 2-dimensional surfaces that are the closed orbits of a symmetry group. If these surfaces have non-positive Euler characteristic (or in the case of 2-spheres, if the initial 2-spheres are large enough) and also if the initial spatial slice is expanding everywhere, then we prove that asymptotically the spacetime becomes physically indistinguishable from de Sitter space on arbitrarily large regions of spacetime. This holds true notwithstanding the presence of initial arbitrarily-large density fluctuations.

Asymptotic Behavior of Cosmologies with $Λ>0$ in 2+1 Dimensions

We study, using Mean Curvature Flow methods, 2+1 dimensional cosmologies with a positive cosmological constant and matter satisfying the dominant and the strong energy conditions. If the spatial slices are compact with non-positive Euler characteristic and are initially expanding everywhere, then we prove that the spatial slices reach infinite volume, asymptotically converge on average to de Sitter and they become, almost everywhere, physically indistinguishable from de Sitter. This holds true notwithstanding the presence of initial arbitrarily-large density fluctuations and the formation of black holes.

Stability of Minkowski space and polyhomogeneity of the metric

We study the nonlinear stability of the $(3+1)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime as a solution of the Einstein vacuum equation. Similarly to our previous work on the stability of cosmological black holes, we construct the solution of the nonlinear initial value problem using an iteration scheme in which we solve a linearized equation globally at each step; we use a generalized harmonic gauge and implement constraint damping to fix the geometry of null infinity. The linear analysis is largely based on energy and vector field methods originating in work by Klainerman. The weak null condition of Lindblad and Rodnianski arises naturally as a nilpotent coupling of certain metric components in a linear model operator at null infinity. Upon compactifying $\mathbb{R}^4$ to a manifold with corners, with boundary hypersurfaces corresponding to spacelike, null, and timelike infinity, we show, using the framework of Melrose's b-analysis, that polyhomogeneous initial data produce a polyhomogeneous spacetime metric. Finally, we relate the Bondi mass to a logarithmic term in the expansion of the metric at null infinity and prove the Bondi mass loss formula.

The global non-linear stability of the Kerr-de Sitter family of black holes

We establish the full global non-linear stability of the Kerr-de Sitter family of black holes, as solutions of the initial value problem for the Einstein vacuum equations with positive cosmological constant, for small angular momenta, and without any symmetry assumptions on the initial data. We achieve this by extending the linear and non-linear analysis on black hole spacetimes described in a sequence of earlier papers by the authors: We develop a general framework which enables us to deal systematically with the diffeomorphism invariance of Einstein's equations. In particular, the iteration scheme used to solve Einstein's equations automatically finds the parameters of the Kerr-de Sitter black hole that the solution is asymptotic to, the exponentially decaying tail of the solution, and the gauge in which we are able to find the solution; the gauge here is a wave map/DeTurck type gauge, modified by source terms which are treated as unknowns, lying in a suitable finite-dimensional space.

Asymptotics of radiation fields in asymptotically Minkowski space

We consider a non-trapping $n$-dimensional Lorentzian manifold endowed with an end structure modeled on the radial compactification of Minkowski space. We find a full asymptotic expansion for tempered forward solutions of the wave equation in all asymptotic regimes. The rates of decay seen in the asymptotic expansion are related to the resonances of a natural asymptotically hyperbolic problem on the "northern cap" of the compactification. For small perturbations of Minkowski space that fit into our framework, we show a rate of decay that improves on the Klainerman--Sobolev estimates.

Inverting the local geodesic X-ray transform on tensors

We prove the local invertibility, up to potential fields, and stability of the geodesic X-ray transform on tensor fields of order 1 and 2 near a strictly convex boundary point, on manifolds with boundary of dimension n>=3. We also present an inversion formula. Under the condition that the manifold can be foliated with a continuous family of strictly convex surfaces, we prove a global result which also implies a lens rigidity result near such a metric. The class of manifolds satisfying the foliation condition includes manifolds with no focal points, and does not exclude existence of conjugate points.

Analytic continuation and high energy estimates for the resolvent of the Laplacian on forms on asymptotically hyperbolic spaces

We show the analytic continuation of the resolvent of the Laplacian on asymptotically hyperbolic spaces on differential forms, including high energy estimates in strips. This is achieved by placing the spectral family of the Laplacian within the framework developed, and applied to scalar problems, by the author recently, roughly by extending the problem across the boundary of the compactification of the asymptotically hyperbolic space in a suitable manner. The main novelty is that the non-scalar nature of the operator is dealt with by relating it to a problem on an asymptotically Minkowski space to motivate the choice of the extension across the conformal boundary.

From resolvent estimates to damped waves

In this paper we show how to obtain decay estimates for the damped wave equation on a compact manifold without geometric control via knowledge of the dynamics near the un-damped set. We show that if replacing the damping term with a higher-order \emph{complex absorbing potential} gives an operator enjoying polynomial resolvent bounds on the real axis, then the "resolvent" associated to our damped problem enjoys bounds of the same order. It is known that the necessary estimates with complex absorbing potential can also be obtained via gluing from estimates for corresponding non-compact models.

Gluing semiclassical resolvent estimates via propagation of singularities

We use semiclassical propagation of singularities to give a general method for gluing together resolvent estimates. As an application we prove estimates for the analytic continuation of the resolvent of a Schrödinger operator for certain asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds in the presence of trapping which is sufficiently mild in one of several senses. As a corollary we obtain local exponential decay for the wave propagator and local smoothing for the Schrödinger propagator.

Propagation through trapped sets and semiclassical resolvent estimates

Motivated by the study of resolvent estimates in the presence of trapping, we prove a semiclassical propagation theorem in a neighborhood of a compact invariant subset of the bicharacteristic flow which is isolated in a suitable sense. Examples include a global trapped set and a single isolated periodic trajectory. This is applied to obtain microlocal resolvent estimates with no loss compared to the nontrapping setting.

Semiclassical resolvent estimates at trapped sets

We extend our recent results on propagation of semiclassical resolvent estimates through trapped sets when a priori polynomial resolvent bounds hold. Previously we obtained non-trapping estimates in trapping situations when the resolvent was sandwiched between cutoffs microlocally supported away from the trapping, a microlocal version of a result of Burq and Cardoso-Vodev. We now allow one of the two cutoffs to be supported at the trapped set, giving estimates which are intermediate between the trapping and non-trapping ones.

The inverse problem for the local geodesic ray transform

Under a convexity assumption on the boundary we solve a local inverse problem, namely we show that the geodesic X-ray transform can be inverted locally in a stable manner; one even has a reconstruction formula. We also show that under an assumption on the existence of a global foliation by strictly convex hypersurfaces the geodesic X-ray transform is globally injective. In addition we prove stability estimates and propose a layer stripping type algorithm for reconstruction.

Morawetz estimates for the wave equation at low frequency

We consider Morawetz estimates for weighted energy decay of solutions to the wave equation on scattering manifolds (i.e., those with large conic ends). We show that a Morawetz estimate persists for solutions that are localized at low frequencies, independent of the geometry of the compact part of the manifold. We further prove a new type of Morawetz estimate in this context, with both hypotheses and conclusion localized inside the forward light cone. This result allows us to gain a 1/2 power of $t$ decay relative to what would be dictated by energy estimates, in a small part of spacetime.

Propagation of singularities around a Lagrangian submanifold of radial points

In this work we study the wavefront set of a solution u to Pu = f, where P is a pseudodifferential operator on a manifold with real-valued homogeneous principal symbol p, when the Hamilton vector field corresponding to p is radial on a Lagrangian submanifold contained in the characteristic set of P. The standard propagation of singularities theorem of Duistermaat-Hormander gives no information at the Lagrangian submanifold. By adapting the standard positive-commutator estimate proof of this theorem, we are able to conclude additional regularity at a point q in this radial set, assuming some regularity around this point. That is, the a priori assumption is either a weaker regularity assumption at q, or a regularity assumption near but not at q. Earlier results of Melrose and Vasy give a more global version of such analysis. Given some regularity assumptions around the Lagrangian submanifold, they obtain some regularity at the Lagrangian submanifold. This paper microlocalizes these results, assuming and concluding regularity only at a particular point of interest. We then proceed to prove an analogous result, useful in scattering theory, followed by analogous results in the context of Lagrangian regularity.
