Nonhomogeneous Boundary-Value Problems for One-Dimensional Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

This paper is concerned with initial-boundary-value problems (IBVPs) for a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations posed either on a half line $\mathbb{R}^+$ or on a bounded interval $(0, L)$ with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. For any $s$ with $0\leq s < 5/2$ and $s \not = 3/2$, it is shown that the relevant IBVPs are locally well-posed if the initial data lie in the $L^2$--based Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{R}^+) $ in the case of the half line and in $H^s (0, L)$ on a bounded interval, provided the boundary data are selected from $H^{(2s+1)/4}_{loc} (\mathbb{R}^+)$ and $H^{(s+ 1) /2}_{loc} (\mathbb{R}^+)$, respectively. (For $s > \frac12$, compatibility between the initial and boundary conditions is also needed.) Global well-posedness is also discussed when $s \ge 1$. From the point of view of the well-posedness theory, the results obtained reveal a significant difference between the IBVP posed on $\mathbb{R}^+$ and the IBVP posed on $(0,L)$. The former is reminiscent of the theory for the pure initial-value problem (IVP) for these Schrödinger equations posed on the whole line $\mathbb{R}$ while the theory on a bounded interval looks more like that othe pure IVP posed on a periodic domain. In particular, the regularity demanded of the boundary data for the IBVP on $\mathbb{R}^+$ is consistent with the temporal trace results that obtain for solutions of the pure IVP on $\mathbb{R}$, while the slightly higher regularity of boundary data for the IBVP on $(0, L)$ resembles what is found for temporal traces of spatially periodic solutions.

Dispersive blow up for nonlinear Schroedinger equations revisited

The possibility of finite-time, dispersive blow up for nonlinear equations of Schroedinger type is revisited. This mathematical phenomena is one of the possible explanations for oceanic and optical rogue waves. In dimension one, the possibility of dispersive blow up for nonlinear Schroedinger equations already appears in [9]. In the present work, the existing results are extended in several ways. In one direction, the theory is broadened to include the Davey-Stewartson and Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In another, dispersive blow up is shown to obtain for nonlinear Schroedinger equations in spatial dimensions larger than one and for more general power-law nonlinearities. As a by-product of our analysis, a sharp global smoothing estimate for the integral term appearing in Duhamel's formula is obtained.

Stability and Decay properties of Solitary wave solutions for the generalized BO-ZK equation

Studied here is the generalized Benjamin-Ono--Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation $u_t+u^pu_x+α\mathscr{H}u_{xx}+\varepsilon u_{xyy}=0, \quad (x,y)\in\rr^2\!,\;\;t\in \rr^+\!$ in two space dimensions. Here, $\mathscr{H}$ is the Hilbert transform and subscripts denote partial differentiation. We classify when equation (1) possesses solitary-wave solutions in terms of the signs of the constants $α$ and $\varepsilon$ appearing in the dispersive terms and the strength of the nonlinearity. Regularity and decay properties of these solitary wave are determined and their stability is studied.

Singularity formation and blowup of complex-valued solutions of the modified KdV equation

The dynamics of the poles of the two--soliton solutions of the modified Korteweg--de Vries equation $$ u_t + 6u^2u_x + u_{xxx} = 0 $$ are determined. A consequence of this study is the existence of classes of smooth, complex--valued solutions of this equation, defined for $-\infty < x < \infty$, exponentially decreasing to zero as $|x| \to \infty$, that blow up in finite time.
