Universal Box Operator: $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$-Symmetry and $α^{\prime}$-Corrections

We construct a fully covariant,$\mathbf{O}(D,D)$-symmetric d'Alembertian -- or box operator -- that acts on tensor fields of arbitrary rank and provides a universal kinetic term for all bosonic closed-string states. In its Riemannian parametrization, the operator packages the Riemann curvature, $H$-flux, and dilaton gradient into a single duality-covariant object. This yields $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$-symmetric gravitational-wave equations for the massless sector, governs the tachyon and all massive modes, and clarifies how higher excitations contribute to $α^{\prime}$-corrections. The box operator thus supplies a unified description of closed-string dynamics across the entire spectrum. Our analysis shows that any apparent breaking of $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ symmetry arises only after integrating out massive modes in a Wilsonian sense, where loop momentum integrals obscure half of the doubled momenta. We stand on the view that $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ symmetry and doubled diffeomorphisms remain exact and undeformed at the fundamental level of string theory.

Fractons, non-Riemannian Geometry, and Double Field Theory

We initiate a systematic study of fracton physics within the geometric framework of Double Field Theory. We ascribe the immobility and large degeneracy of the former to the non-Riemannian backgrounds of the latter, in terms of generalised geodesics and infinite-dimensional isometries. A doubled pure Yang-Mills or Maxwell theory reduces to an ordinary one coupled to a strain tensor of elasticity theory, and thus rather remarkably provides a unifying description of photons and phonons. Upon a general Double Field Theory background, which consists of Riemannian and non-Riemannian subspaces, the dual photon-phonon pair becomes fractonic over the non-Riemannian subspace. When the elasticity displacement vector condenses, minimally coupled charged particles acquire an effective mass even in the purely Riemannian case, yielding predictions for polaron physics and time crystals. Furthermore, the immobility of neutral particles along the non-Riemannian directions is lifted to a saturation velocity for charged particles. Utilising the differential geometry of Double Field Theory we also present curved spacetime extensions which exhibit general covariance.

Janus van der Waals equations for real molecules with two-sided phase transitions

We obtain families of generalised van der Waals equations characterised by an even number $n=2,4,6$ and a continuous free parameter which is tunable for a critical compressibility factor. Each equation features two adjacent critical points which have a common critical temperature $T_{c}$ and arbitrarily close two critical densities. The critical phase transitions are naturally two-sided: the critical exponents are $α_{\scriptscriptstyle{P}}=γ_{\scriptscriptstyle{P}}=\frac{2}{3}$, $β_{\scriptscriptstyle{P}}=δ^{-1}=\frac{1}{3}$ for $T>T_{c}$ and $α_{\scriptscriptstyle{P}}=γ_{\scriptscriptstyle{P}}=\frac{n}{n+1}$, $β_{\scriptscriptstyle{P}}=δ^{-1}=\frac{1}{n+1}$ for $T<T_{c}$. In contrast with the original van der Waals equation, our novel equations all reduce consistently to the classical ideal gas law in low density limit. We test our formulas against NIST data for eleven major molecules and show agreements better than the original van der Waals equation, not only near to the critical points but also in low density regions.

Post-Newtonian Feasibility of the Closed String Massless Sector

We perform post Newtonian analysis of Double Field Theory as a test of string theory in gravitational sector against observations. We identify the Eddington--Robertson--Schiff parameters $β_{\rm{PPN}}$, $γ_{\rm{PPN}}$ with the charges of electric $H$-flux and dilaton respectively, and further relate them to stress-energy tensor. We show ${β_{\rm{PPN}}=1}$ from weak energy condition and argue that the observation of $γ_{\rm{PPN}}\simeq 1$ signifies the ultrarelativistic equation of state in baryons, or the suppression of gluon condensate.

Identifying Riemannian singularities with regular non-Riemannian geometry

Admitting non-Riemannian geometries, Double Field Theory extends the notion of spacetime beyond the Riemannian paradigm. We identify a class of singular spacetimes known in General Relativity with regular non-Riemannian geometries. The former divergences merely correspond to coordinate singularities of the generalised metric for the latter. Computed in string frame, they feature an impenetrable non-Riemannian sphere outside of which geodesics are complete with no singular deviation. Approaching the non-Riemannian points, particles freeze and strings become (anti-)chiral.

$\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ completion of the Friedmann equations

In string theory the closed-string massless NS-NS sector forms a multiplet of $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ symmetry. This suggests a specific modification to General Relativity in which the entire NS-NS sector is promoted to stringy graviton fields. Imposing off-shell $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ symmetry fixes the correct couplings to other matter fields and the Einstein field equations are enriched to comprise $D^{2}+1$ components, dubbed recently as the Einstein Double Field Equations. Here we explore the cosmological implications of this framework. We derive the most general homogeneous and isotropic ansatzes for both stringy graviton fields and the $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$-covariant energy-momentum tensor. Crucially, the former admits space-filling magnetic $H$-flux. Substituting them into the Einstein Double Field Equations, we obtain the $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ completion of the Friedmann equations along with a generalized continuity equation. We discuss how solutions in this framework may be characterized by two equation-of-state parameters, $w$ and $λ$, where the latter characterizes the relative intensities of scalar and tensor forces. When $λ+3w=1$, the dilaton remains constant throughout the cosmological evolution, and one recovers the standard Friedmann equations for generic matter content (i.e. for any $w$). We further point out that, in contrast to General Relativity, neither an $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$-symmetric cosmological constant nor a scalar field with positive energy density gives rise to a de Sitter solution.

A note on Faddeev--Popov action for doubled-yet-gauged particle and graded Poisson geometry

The section condition of Double Field Theory has been argued to mean that doubled coordinates are gauged: a gauge orbit represents a single physical point. In this note, we consider a doubled and at the same time gauged particle action, and show that its BRST formulation including Faddeev--Popov ghosts matches with the graded Poisson geometry that has been recently used to describe the symmetries of Double Field Theory. Besides, by requiring target spacetime diffeomorphisms at the quantum level, we derive quantum corrections to the classical action involving dilaton, which might be comparable with the Fradkin--Tseytlin term on string worldsheet.

Remarks on the non-Riemannian sector in Double Field Theory

Taking $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ covariant field variables as its truly fundamental constituents, Double Field Theory can accommodate not only conventional supergravity but also non-Riemannian gravities that may be classified by two non-negative integers, $(n,\bar{n})$. Such non-Riemannian backgrounds render a propagating string chiral and anti-chiral over $n$ and $\bar{n}$ dimensions respectively. Examples include, but are not limited to, Newton--Cartan, Carroll, or Gomis--Ooguri. Here we analyze the variational principle with care for a generic $(n,\bar{n})$ non-Riemannian sector. We recognize a nontrivial subtlety for ${n\bar{n}\neq 0}$ that infinitesimal variations generically include those which change $(n,\bar{n})$. This seems to suggest that the various non-Riemannian gravities should better be identified as different solution sectors of Double Field Theory rather than viewed as independent theories. Separate verification of our results as string worldsheet beta-functions may enlarge the scope of the string landscape far beyond Riemann.

Stringy Newton Gravity with $H$-flux

A Symmetry Principle has been shown to augment unambiguously the Einstein Field Equations, promoting the whole closed-string massless NS-NS sector to stringy graviton fields. Here we consider its weak field approximation, take a non-relativistic limit, and derive the stringy augmentation of Newton Gravity: \[ \begin{array}{lll} {\bf{\nabla}^{2}Φ}=4πG ρ+\bf{H}{\bf{\cdot}}\bf{H}\,, \quad&\qquad\bf{\nabla}\bf{\cdot}\bf{H}=0\,, \quad&\qquad {\bf{\nabla}\bf{\times}\bf{H}}=4πG\, \bf{K}\,. \end{array} \] Not only the mass density $ρ$ but also the current density $\mathbf{K}$ is intrinsic to matter. Sourcing $\mathbf{H}$ which is of NS-NS $H$-flux origin, $\mathbf{K}$ is nontrivial if the matter is `stringy'. $\mathbf{H}$ contributes quadratically to the Newton potential, but otherwise is decoupled from the point particle dynamics, i.e. $\bf{\ddot{x}}=-\bf{\nabla}Φ$. We define `stringization' analogous to magnetization and discuss regular as well as monopole-like singular solutions.

Green-Schwarz superstring on doubled-yet-gauged spacetime

We construct a world-sheet action for Green-Schwarz superstring in terms of doubled-yet-gauged spacetime coordinates. For an arbitrarily curved NS-NS background, the action possesses $\mathbf{O}(10,10)$ T-duality, $\mathbf{Spin}(1,9)\times\mathbf{Spin}(9,1)$ Lorentz symmetry, coordinate gauge symmetry, spacetime doubled-yet-gauged diffeomorphisms, world-sheet diffeomorphisms and Weyl symmetry. Further, restricted to flat backgrounds, it enjoys maximal spacetime supersymmetry and kappa-symmetry. After the auxiliary coordinate gauge symmetry potential being integrated out, our action can consistently reduce to the original undoubled Green-Schwarz action. Thanks to the twofold spin groups, the action is unique: it is specific choices of the NS-NS backgrounds that distinguish IIA or IIB, as well as lead to non-Riemannian or non-relativistic superstring a la Gomis-Ooguri which might deserve the nomenclature, type IIC.

Higher Spin Double Field Theory : A Proposal

We construct a double field theory coupled to the fields present in Vasiliev's equations. Employing the "semi-covariant" differential geometry, we spell a functional in which each term is completely covariant with respect to $\mathbf{O}(4,4)$ T-duality, doubled diffeomorphisms, $\mathbf{Spin}(1,3)$ local Lorentz symmetry and, separately, $\mathbf{HS}(4)$ higher spin gauge symmetry. We identify a minimal set of BPS-like conditions whose solutions automatically satisfy the full Euler-Lagrange equations. As such a solution, we derive a linear dilaton vacuum. With extra algebraic constraints further supplemented, the BPS-like conditions reduce to the bosonic Vasiliev equations.

$\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ Covariant Noether Currents and Global Charges in Double Field Theory

Double field theory is an approach for massless modes of string theory, unifying and geometrizing all gauge invariance in manifest $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ covariant manner. In this approach, we derive off-shell conserved Noether current and corresponding Noether potential associated with unified gauge invariance. We add Wald-type counter two-form to the Noether potential and define conserved global charges as surface integral. We check our $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ covariant formula against various string backgrounds, both geometric and non-geometric. In all cases we examined, we find perfect agreements with previous results. Our formula facilitates to evaluate momenta along not only ordinary spacetime directions but also dual spacetime directions on equal footing. From this, we confirm recent assertion that null wave in doubled spacetime is the same as macroscopic fundamental string in ordinary spacetime.

Standard Model as a Double Field Theory

We show that, without any extra physical degree introduced, the Standard Model can be readily reformulated as a Double Field Theory. Consequently, the Standard Model can couple to an arbitrary stringy gravitational background in an $\mathbf{O}(4,4)$ T-duality covariant manner and manifest two independent local Lorentz symmetries, $\mathbf{Spin}(1,3)\times\mathbf{Spin}(3,1)$. While the diagonal gauge fixing of the twofold spin groups leads to the conventional formulation on the flat Minkowskian background, the enhanced symmetry makes the Standard Model more rigid, and also stringy, than it appeared. The CP violating $θ$-term may no longer be allowed by the symmetry, and hence the strong CP problem is solved. There are now stronger constraints imposed on the possible higher order corrections. We speculate that the quarks and the leptons may possibly belong to the two different spin classes.

Supersymmetric gauged Double Field Theory: Systematic derivation by virtue of \textit{Twist}

In a completely systematic and geometric way, we derive maximal and half-maximal supersymmetric gauged double field theories in lower than ten dimensions. To this end, we apply a simple twisting ansatz to the $D=10$ ungauged maximal and half-maximal supersymmetric double field theories constructed previously within the so-called semi-covariant formalism. The twisting ansatz may not satisfy the section condition. Nonetheless, all the features of the semi-covariant formalism, including its complete covariantizability, are still valid after the twist under alternative consistency conditions. The twist allows gaugings as supersymmetry preserving deformations of the $D=10$ untwisted theories after Scherk-Schwarz-type dimensional reductions. The maximal supersymmetric twist requires an extra condition to ensure both the Ramond-Ramond gauge symmetry and the $32$ supersymmetries unbroken.

Covariant action for a string in doubled yet gauged spacetime

The section condition in double field theory has been shown to imply that a physical point should be one-to-one identified with a gauge orbit in the doubled coordinate space. Here we show the converse is also true, and continue to explore the idea of `spacetime being doubled yet gauged'. Introducing an appropriate gauge connection, we construct a string action, with an arbitrary generalized metric, which is completely covariant with respect to the coordinate gauge symmetry, generalized diffeomorphisms, world-sheet diffeomorphisms, world-sheet Weyl symmetry and O(D,D) T-duality. A topological term previously proposed in the literature naturally arises and a self-duality condition follows from the equations of motion. Further, the action may couple to a T-dual background where the Riemannian metric becomes everywhere singular.

M-theory and Type IIB from a Duality Manifest Action

We revisit the SL(5) U-duality manifest action constructed by Berman and Perry in an extended spacetime. Upon choosing a four-dimensional solution to the section condition constraint, the theory reduces to a four-dimensional truncation of eleven-dimensional supergravity. In this paper, we show that the theory contains more than this M-theory reduction. The section condition also admits an SL(5) inequivalent three-dimensional solution, upon which the action directly reduces to a three-dimensional truncation of type IIB supergravity. We also discuss the reduction to IIB$^*$ supergravity.

Two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate under pressure

Evading the Mermin-Wagner-Hohenberg no-go theorem and revisiting with rigor the ideal Bose gas confined in a square box, we explore a discrete phase transition in two spatial dimensions. Through both analytic and numerical methods we verify that thermodynamic instability emerges if the number of particles is sufficiently yet finitely large: specifically $N\geq 35131$. The instability implies that the isobar of the gas zigzags on the temperature-volume plane, featuring supercooling and superheating phenomena. The Bose-Einstein condensation then can persist from absolute zero to the superheating temperature. Without necessarily taking the large $N$ limit, under constant pressure condition, the condensation takes place discretely both in the momentum and in the position spaces. Our result is applicable to a harmonic trap. We assert that experimentally observed Bose-Einstein condensations of harmonically trapped atomic gases are a first-order phase transition which involves a discrete change of the density at the center of the trap.

U-gravity : ${\mathbf{SL}(N)}$

We construct a duality manifest gravitational theory for the special linear group, ${\mathbf{SL}(N)}$ with $N{\neq 4}$. The spacetime is formally extended, to have the dimension $\textstyle{\frac{1}{2}} N(N-1)$, yet is `gauged'. Consequently the theory is subject to a section condition. We introduce a semi-covariant derivative and a semi-covariant `Riemann' curvature, both of which can be completely covariantized after symmetrizing or contracting the ${\mathbf{SL}(N)}$ vector indices properly. Fully covariant scalar and `Ricci' curvatures then constitute the action and the `Einstein' equation of motion. For $N\geq 5$, the section condition admits duality inequivalent two solutions, one $(N-1)$-dimensional and the other three-dimensional. In each case, the theory can describe not only Riemannian but also non-Riemannian backgrounds.

Comments on double field theory and diffeomorphisms

As the theory is subject to a section condition, coordinates in double field theory do not represent physical points in an injective manner. We argue that a physical point should be rather one-to-one identified with a `gauge orbit' in the coordinate space. The diffeomorphism symmetry then implies an invariance under arbitrary reparametrizations of the gauge orbits. Within this generalized sense of diffeomorphism, we show that a recently proposed tensorial transformation rule for finite coordinate transformations is actually (i) consistent with the standard exponential map, and further (ii) compatible with the full covariance of the `semi-covariant' derivatives and curvatures after projectors are properly imposed.

How many is different? Answer from ideal Bose gas

How many $\mathrm{H_{2}O}$ molecules are needed to form water? While the precise answer is not known, it is clear that the answer should be a finite number rather than infinity. We revisit with care the ideal Bose gas confined in a cubic box which is discussed in most statistical physics textbooks. We show that the isobar of the ideal gas zigzags on the temperature-volume plane featuring a `boiling-like' discrete phase transition, provided the number of particles is equal to or greater than a particular value: 7616. This demonstrates for the first time how a finite system can feature a mathematical singularity and realize the notion of `Emergence', without resorting to the thermodynamic limit.

Stringy Unification of Type IIA and IIB Supergravities under N=2 D=10 Supersymmetric Double Field Theory

To the full order in fermions, we construct D=10 type II supersymmetric double field theory. We spell the precise N=2 supersymmetry transformation rules as for 32 supercharges. The constructed action unifies type IIA and IIB supergravities in a manifestly covariant manner with respect to O(10,10) T-duality and a pair of local Lorentz groups, or Spin(1,9) \times Spin(9,1), besides the usual general covariance of supergravities or the generalized diffeomorphism. While the theory is unique, the solutions are twofold. Type IIA and IIB supergravities are identified as two different types of solutions rather than two different theories.

U-geometry : SL(5)

Recently Berman and Perry constructed a four-dimensional M-theory effective action which manifests SL(5) U-duality. Here we propose an underlying differential geometry of it, under the name `SL(5) U-geometry' which generalizes the ordinary Riemannian geometry in an SL(5) compatible manner. We introduce a `semi-covariant' derivative that can be converted into fully covariant derivatives after anti-symmetrizing or contracting the SL(5) vector indices appropriately. We also derive fully covariant scalar and Ricci-like curvatures which constitute the effective action as well as the equation of motion.

Incorporation of fermions into double field theory

Based on the stringy differential geometry we proposed earlier, we incorporate fermions such as gravitino and dilatino into double field theory in a manifestly covariant manner with regard to O(D,D) T-duality, diffeomorphism, one-form gauge symmetry for B-field and a pair of local Lorentz symmetries. We note that there are two kinds of fermions in double field theory: O(D,D) singlet and non-singlet which may be identified, respectively as the common and the non-common fermionic sectors in type IIA and IIB supergravities. For each kind, we construct corresponding covariant Dirac operators. Further, we derive a simple criterion for an O(D,D) rotation to flip the chirality of the O(D,D) non-singlet chiral fermions, which implies the exchange of type IIA and IIB supergravities.

Ramond-Ramond Cohomology and O(D,D) T-duality

In the name of supersymmetric double field theory, superstring effective actions can be reformulated into simple forms. They feature a pair of vielbeins corresponding to the same spacetime metric, and hence enjoy double local Lorentz symmetries. In a manifestly covariant manner --with regard to O(D,D) T-duality, diffeomorphism, B-field gauge symmetry and the pair of local Lorentz symmetries-- we incorporate R-R potentials into double field theory. We take them as a single object which is in a bi-fundamental spinorial representation of the double Lorentz groups. We identify cohomological structure relevant to the field strength. A priori, the R-R sector as well as all the fermions are O(D,D) singlet. Yet, gauge fixing the two vielbeins equal to each other modifies the O(D,D) transformation rule to call for a compensating local Lorentz rotation, such that the R-R potential may turn into an O(D,D) spinor and T-duality can flip the chirality exchanging type IIA and IIB supergravities.

Superconformal Yang-Mills quantum mechanics and Calogero model with OSp(N|2,R) symmetry

In spacetime dimension two, pure Yang-Mills possesses no physical degrees of freedom, and consequently it admits a supersymmetric extension to couple to an arbitrary number, N say, of Majorana-Weyl gauginos. This results in (N,0) super Yang-Mills. Further, its dimensional reduction to mechanics doubles the number of supersymmetries, from N to N+N, to include conformal supercharges, and leads to a superconformal Yang-Mills quantum mechanics with symmetry group OSp(N|2,R). We comment on its connection to AdS_2 \times S^{N-1} and reduction to a supersymmetric Calogero model.

Supersymmetric Double Field Theory: Stringy Reformulation of Supergravity

We construct a supersymmetric extension of double field theory that realizes the ten-dimensional Majorana-Weyl local supersymmetry. In terms of a stringy differential geometry we proposed earlier, our action consists of five simple terms -- two bosonic plus three fermionic -- and manifests not only diffeomorphism and one-form gauge symmetry of B-field, but also O(10,10) T-duality as well as a direct product of two local Lorentz symmetries, SO(1,9) \times SO(9,1). A gauge fixing that identifies the double local Lorentz groups reduces our action to the minimal supergravity in ten dimensions.

Differential geometry with a projection: Application to double field theory

In recent development of double field theory, as for the description of the massless sector of closed strings, the spacetime dimension is formally doubled, i.e. from D to D+D, and the T-duality is realized manifestly as a global O(D,D) rotation. In this paper, we conceive a differential geometry characterized by a O(D,D) symmetric projection, as the underlying mathematical structure of double field theory. We introduce a differential operator compatible with the projection, which, contracted with the projection, can be covariantized and may replace the ordinary derivatives in the generalized Lie derivative that generates the gauge symmetry of double field theory. We construct various gauge covariant tensors which include a scalar and a tensor carrying two O(D,D) vector indices.

Double field formulation of Yang-Mills theory

Based on our previous work on the differential geometry for the closed string double field theory, we construct a Yang-Mills action which is covariant under O(D,D) T-duality rotation and invariant under three-types of gauge transformations: non-Abelian Yang-Mills, diffeomorphism and one-form gauge symmetries. In double field formulation, in a manifestly covariant manner our action couples a single O(D,D) vector potential to the closed string double field theory. In terms of undoubled component fields, it couples a usual Yang-Mills gauge field to an additional one-form field and also to the closed string background fields which consist of a dilaton, graviton and a two-form gauge field. Our resulting action resembles a twisted Yang-Mills action.

Existence of a critical point in the phase diagram of the ideal relativistic neutral Bose gas

We explore the phase transitions of the ideal relativistic neutral Bose gas confined in a cubic box, without assuming the thermodynamic limit nor continuous approximation. While the corresponding non-relativistic canonical partition function is essentially a one-variable function depending on a particular combination of temperature and volume, the relativistic canonical partition function is genuinely a two-variable function of them. Based on an exact expression of the canonical partition function, we performed numerical computations for up to hundred thousand particles. We report that if the number of particles is equal to or greater than a critical value, which amounts to 7616, the ideal relativistic neutral Bose gas features a spinodal curve with a critical point. This enables us to depict the phase diagram of the ideal Bose gas. The consequent phase transition is first-order below the critical pressure or second-order at the critical pressure. The exponents corresponding to the singularities are 1/2 and 2/3 respectively. We also verify the recently observed `Widom line' in the supercritical region.

Isobar of an ideal Bose gas within the grand canonical ensemble

We investigate the isobar of an ideal Bose gas confined in a cubic box within the grand canonical ensemble, for a large yet finite number of particles, N. After solving the equation of the spinodal curve, we derive precise formulae for the supercooling and the superheating temperatures which reveal an N^{-1/3} or N^{-1/4} power correction to the known Bose-Einstein condensation temperature in the thermodynamic limit. Numerical computations confirm the accuracy of our analytical approximation, and further show that the isobar zigzags on the temperature-volume plane if N is greater than or equal to 14393. In particular, for the Avogadro's number of particles, the volume expands discretely about 10^5 times. Our results quantitatively agree with a previous study on the canonical ensemble within 0.1% error.

Off-shell superconformal nonlinear sigma-models in three dimensions

We develop superspace techniques to construct general off-shell N=1,2,3,4 superconformal sigma-models in three space-time dimensions. The most general N=3 and N=4 superconformal sigma-models are constructed in terms of N=2 chiral superfields. Several superspace proofs of the folklore statement that N=3 supersymmetry implies N=4 are presented both in the on-shell and off-shell settings. We also elaborate on (super)twistor realisations for (super)manifolds on which the three-dimensional N-extended superconformal groups act transitively and which include Minkowski space as a subspace.

Stringy differential geometry, beyond Riemann

While the fundamental object in Riemannian geometry is a metric, closed string theories call for us to put a two-form gauge field and a scalar dilaton on an equal footing with the metric. Here we propose a novel differential geometry which treats the three objects in a unified manner, manifests not only diffeomorphism and one-form gauge symmetry but also O(D,D) T-duality, and enables us to rewrite the known low energy effective action of them as a single term. Further, we develop a corresponding vielbein formalism and gauge the internal symmetry which is given by a direct product of two local Lorentz groups, SO(1,D-1) times SO(1,D-1). We comment that the notion of cosmological constant naturally changes.

Partonic description of a supersymmetric p-brane

We consider supersymmetric extensions of a recently proposed partonic description of a bosonic p-brane which reformulates the Nambu-Goto action as an interacting multi-particle action with Filippov-Lie algebra gauge symmetry. We construct a worldline supersymmetric action by postulating, among others, a p-form fermion. Demanding a local worldline supersymmetry rather than the full worldvolume supersymmetry, we circumvent a known no-go theorem against the construction of a Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz supersymmetric action for a p-brane of p>1. We also derive a spacetime supersymmetric Green-Schwarz extension from the preexisting kappa-symmetric action.

Thermodynamic instability and first-order phase transition in an ideal Bose gas

We conduct a rigorous investigation into the thermodynamic instability of ideal Bose gas confined in a cubic box, without assuming thermodynamic limit nor continuous approximation. Based on the exact expression of canonical partition function, we perform numerical computations up to the number of particles one million. We report that if the number of particles is equal to or greater than a certain critical value, which turns out to be 7616, the ideal Bose gas subject to Dirichlet boundary condition reveals a thermodynamic instability. Accordingly we demonstrate - for the first time - that, a system consisting of finite number of particles can exhibit a discontinuous phase transition featuring a genuine mathematical singularity, provided we keep not volume but pressure constant. The specific number, 7616 can be regarded as a characteristic number of 'cube' that is the geometric shape of the box.

Taking off the square root of Nambu-Goto action and obtaining Filippov-Lie algebra gauge theory action

We propose a novel prescription to take off the square root of Nambu-Goto action for a p-brane, which generalizes the Brink-Di Vecchia-Howe-Tucker or also known as Polyakov method. With an arbitrary decomposition as d+n=p+1, our resulting action is a modified d-dimensional Polyakov action which is gauged and possesses a Nambu n-bracket squared potential. We first spell out how the (p+1)-dimensional diffeomorphism is realized in the lower dimensional action. Then we discuss a possible gauge fixing of it to a direct product of $d$-dimensional diffeomorphism and n-dimensional volume preserving diffeomorphism. We show that the latter naturally leads to a novel Filippov-Lie n-algebra based gauge theory action in d-dimensions.

Classification of the BPS states in Bagger-Lambert Theory

We classify, in a group theoretical manner, the BPS configurations in the multiple M2-brane theory recently proposed by Bagger and Lambert. We present three types of BPS equations preserving various fractions of supersymmetries: in the first type we have constant fields and the interactions are purely algebraic in nature; in the second type the equations are invariant under spatial rotation SO(2), and the fields can be time-dependent; in the third class the equations are invariant under boost SO(1,1) and provide the eleven-dimensional generalizations of the Nahm equations. The BPS equations for different number of supersymmetries exhibit the division algebra structures: octonion, quarternion or complex.

M-brane bound states and the supersymmetry of BPS solutions in the Bagger-Lambert theory

We continue our study of BPS equations and supersymmetric configurations in the Bagger-Lambert theory. The superalgebra allows three different types of central extensions which correspond to compounds of various M-theory objects: M2-branes, M5-branes, gravity waves and Kaluza-Klein monopoles which intersect or have overlaps with the M2-branes whose dynamics is given by the Bagger-Lambert action. As elementary objects they are all 1/2-BPS, and multiple intersections of $n$-branes generically break the supersymmetry into $1/2^n$, as it is well known. But a particular composite of M-branes can preserve from 1/16 up to 3/4 of the original ${\cal N}=8$ supersymmetries as previously discovered. In this paper we provide the M-theory interpretation for various BPS equations, and also present explicit solutions to some 1/2-BPS equations.

M-theory on pp-waves with a holomorphic superpotential and its membrane and matrix descriptions

We study a new class of inhomogeneous pp-wave solutions with 8 unbroken supersymmetries in D=11 supergravity. The 9 dimensional transverse space is Euclidean and split into 3 and 6 dimensional subspaces. The solutions have non-constant gauge flux, which are described in terms of an arbitrary holomorphic function of the complexified 6 dimensional space. The supermembrane and matrix theory descriptions are also provided and we identify the relevant supersymmetry transformation rules. The action also arises through a dimensional reduction of N=1, D=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to 3 gauge adjoint and chiral multiplets, whose interactions are determined by the holomorphic function of the supergravity solution now constituting the superpotential.

Superfield theory and supermatrix model

We study the noncommutative superspace of arbitrary dimensions in a systematic way. Superfield theories on a noncommutative superspace can be formulated in two folds, through the star product formalism and in terms of the supermatrices. We elaborate the duality between them by constructing the isomorphism explicitly and relating the superspace integrations of the star product Lagrangian or the superpotential to the traces of the supermatrices. We show there exists an interesting fine tuned commutative limit where the duality can be still maintained. Namely on the commutative superspace too, there exists a supermatrix model description for the superfield theory. We interpret the result in the context of the wave particle duality. The dual particles for the superfields in even and odd spacetime dimensions are D-instantons and D0-branes respectively to be consistent with the T-duality.

3D N=2 massive super Yang-Mills and membranes/D2-branes in a curved background

We present a three dimensional novel massive N=2 super Yang-Mills action as a low energy effective worldvolume description of the D2-branes on a pp-wave. The action contains the Myers term, mass terms for three Higgs, and terms mixing the electric fields with other two Higgs. We derive the action in three different ways, from the M-theory matrix model, from the supermembrane action, and from the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. We verify the consistent mutual agreement and comment how each approach is complementary to another. In particular, we give the eleven dimensional geometric interpretation of the vacua in the worldvolume theory as the membranes tilted to the eleventh direction with the giant gravitons around.

5D action for longitudinal five branes on a pp-wave

String modes in a pp-wave background are generically massive, and the worldvolume description of the branes is to be given by `massive' gauge theories. In this paper, we present a five dimensional super Yang-Mills action with the Kahler-Chern-Simons term plus the Myers term as a low energy worldvolume description of the longitudinal five branes in a maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background. We derive the action from the M-theory matrix model on the pp-wave. We utilize the previously found 4/32 BPS solution of rotating five branes with stacks of membranes, but, to obtain the static configuration, we reformulate the matrix model in a rotating coordinate system which provides the inertial frame for the branes. Expanding the matrix model around the solution, we first obtain a non-commutative field theory action naturally equipped with the full sixteen dynamical supersymmetries. In the commutative limit, we show only four supersymmetries survive, resulting in a novel five dimensional "N=1/2" theory.

BPS equations in Six and Eight Dimensions

We consider the maximal supersymmetric pure Yang-Mills theories on six and eight dimensional space. We determine, in a systematic way, all the possible fractions of supersymmetry preserved by the BPS states and present the corresponding `self-dual' BPS equations. In six dimensions the intrinsic one has 1/4 supersymmetry, while in eight dimensions, 1/16, 2/16, ..., 6/16. We apply our results to some explicit BPS configurations of finite or infinite energy on commutative or noncommutative spaces.

Description of identical particles via gauged matrix models : a generalization of the Calogero-Sutherland system

We elaborate the idea that the matrix models equipped with the gauge symmetry provide a natural framework to describe identical particles. After demonstrating the general prescription, we study an exactly solvable harmonic oscillator type gauged matrix model. The model gives a generalization of the Calogero-Sutherland system where the strength of the inverse square potential is not fixed but dynamical bounded by below.

Solitons in a Grassmannian sigma-model Coupled to Chern-Simons Term

We propose an exactly solvable Grassmannian sigma-model coupled to the Chern-Simons theory. In the presence of a novel topological term our model admits exact self-dual vortex solutions which are identical to those of pure Grassmannian model, but the topological charge has a physical meaning as a magnetic flux since the gauge field is no longer auxiliary. We also extend the theory to a noncommutative plane and analyze the BPS solutions.

Superalgebra for M-theory on a pp-wave

We study the superalgebra of the M-theory on a fully supersymmetric pp-wave. We identify the algebra as the special unitary Lie superalgebra, su(2|4;2,0) or su(2|4;2,4), and analyze its root structure. We discuss the typical and atypical representations deriving the typicality condition explicitly in terms of the energy and other four quantum numbers. We classify the BPS multiplets preserving 4,8,12,16 real supercharges and obtain the corresponding spectrum. We show that in the BPS multiplet either the lowest energy floor is an su(2) singlet or the highest energy floor is an su(4) singlet.

Supersymmetric objects in the M-theory on a pp-wave

We obtain, in a systematic way, all the classical BPS equations which correspond to the quantum BPS states in the M-theory on a fully supersymmetric pp-wave. The superalgebra of the M-theory matrix model shows that the BPS states always preserve pairs of supersymmetry, implying the possible fractions of the unbroken supersymmetry as 2/16, 4/16, 6/16,.... We study their classical counterparts, and find there are essentially one unique set of 2/16 BPS equations, three inequivalent types of 4/16 BPS equations, and three inequivalent types of 8/16 BPS equations only, in addition to the 16/16 static fuzzy sphere. We discuss various supersymmetric objects as solutions. In particular, when the fuzzy sphere rotates, the supersymmetry is further broken as 16/16 -> 8/16 -> 4/16.

A Study of Two-/One-form Superfields

We study two supersymmetric toy models of a k-form superfield, k=2,1 separately. By ``solving'' Jacobi identities, we show that each model is completely solvable at off-shell level, possesses a severely constrained kinematics, and gives a rigid representation of the supersymmetry algebra. This study of the toy models is motivated by our reanalysis on supersymmetry algebras in gauge theories where we discuss internal symmetry generators carrying spacetime/spinor indices.

On a Matrix Model of Level Structure

We generalize the dimensionally reduced Yang-Mills matrix model by adding d=1 Chern-Simons term and terms for a bosonic vector. The coefficient, κof the Chern-Simons term must be integer, and hence the level structure. We show at the bottom of the Yang-Mills potential, the low energy limit, only the linear motion is allowed for D0 particles. Namely all the particles align themselves on a single straight line subject to κ^2/r^2 repulsive potential from each other. We argue the relevant brane configuration to be D0-branes in a D4 after κof D8's pass the system.

5D Actions for 6D Self-Dual Tensor Field Theory

We present two equivalent five-dimensional actions for six-dimensional (N,0) N=1,2 supersymmetric theories of self-dual tensor whose one spatial dimension is compactified on a circle. The Kaluza-Klein tower consists of a massless vector and infinite number of massive self-dual tensor multiplets living in five-dimensions. The self-duality follows from the equation of motion. Both actions are quadratic in field variables without any auxiliary field. When lifted back to six-dimensions, one of them gives a supersymmetric extension of the bosonic formulation for the chiral two-form tensor by Perry and Schwarz.

Comments on Noncommutative Gauge Theories

We study the gauge theories on noncommutative space. We employ the idea of the covariant position to understand the linear and angular momenta, the center of mass position, and to express all gauge invariant observables including the Wilson line. In addition, we utilize the universality of the U(1) gauge theory, which originates from the underlying matrix theory, to analyze various solitons on U(N) theories, like the unstable static vortex solutions in two dimensions and BPS dyonic fluxon solutions.

A Study of a Non-Abelian Generalization of the Born-Infeld Action

A new type of non-Abelian generalization of the Born-Infeld action is proposed, in which the spacetime indices and group indices are combined. The action is manifestly Lorentz and gauge invariant. In its power expansion, the lowest order term is the Yang-Mills action and the second term corresponds to the bosonic stringy correction to this action. Solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equation for the SU(2) case are considered and we show that there exists an instanton-like solution which has winding number one and finite action.

N=1 Superconformal Symmetry in Four Dimensions

N=1, d=4 superconformal group is studied and its representations are discussed. Under superconformal transformations, left invariant derivatives and some class of superfields, including supercurrents, are shown to follow these representations. In other words, these superfields are quasi-primary by analogy with two dimensional conformal field theory. Based on these results, we find the general forms of the two-point and the three-point correlation functions of the quasi-primary superfields in a group theoretical way. In particular, we show that the two-point function of the supercurrent is unique up to a constant and the general form of the three-point function of the supercurrent has two free parameters.

Superconformal Symmetry and Correlation Functions

Four-dimensional N-extended superconformal symmetry and correlation functions of quasi-primary superfields are studied within the superspace formalism. A superconformal Killing equation is derived and its solutions are classified in terms of supertranslations, dilations, Lorentz transformations, R-symmetry transformations and special superconformal transformations. In general, due to the invariance under supertranslations and special superconformal transformations, superconformally invariant n-point functions reduce to one unspecified (n-2)-point function which must transform homogeneously under the remaining rigid transformations, i.e. dilations, Lorentz transformations and R-symmetry transformations. Based on this result, we are able to identify all the superconformal invariants and obtain the general form of n-point functions for scalar superfields. In particular, as a byproduct, a selection rule for correlation functions is derived, the existence of which in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory was previously predicted in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence. Superconformally covariant differential operators are also discussed.

Superconformal Symmetry in Six-dimensions and Its Reduction to Four

Superconformal symmetry in six-dimensions is analyzed in terms of coordinate transformations on superspace. A superconformal Killing equation is derived and its solutions are identified in terms of supertranslations, dilations, Lorentz transformations, R-symmetry transformations and special superconformal transformations. The full superconformal symmetry, which is shown to form the group OSp(2,6|N), is possible only if the supersymmetry algebra has N spinorial generators of the same chirality, corresponding to (N,0) supersymmetry. The R-symmetry group is then Sp(N) and the corresponding superspace is R^{6|8N}. We define superinversion as a map to the associated superspace of opposite chirality. General formulae for two-point and three-point correlation functions of quasi-primary superfields are exhibited. The superconformal group in six-dimensions is reduced to a corresponding extended superconformal group in four-dimensions. Superconformally covariant differential operators are also discussed.

Superconformal Symmetry in Three-dimensions

Three-dimensional N-extended superconformal symmetry is studied within the superspace formalism. A superconformal Killing equation is derived and its solutions are classified in terms of supertranslations, dilations, Lorentz transformations, R-symmetry transformations and special superconformal transformations. Superconformal group is then identified with a supermatrix group, OSp(N|2,R), as expected from the analysis on simple Lie superalgebras. After constructing building blocks for superconformal correlators, we are able to identify all the superconformal invariants and obtain the general form of n-point functions. Superconformally covariant differential operators are also discussed.
