On the Unbounded Picture of $KK$-Theory

In the founding paper on unbounded $KK$-theory it was established by Baaj and Julg that the bounded transform, which associates a class in $KK$-theory to any unbounded Kasparov module, is a surjective homomorphism (under a separability assumption). In this paper, we provide an equivalence relation on unbounded Kasparov modules and we thereby describe the kernel of the bounded transform. This allows us to introduce a notion of topological unbounded $KK$-theory, which becomes isomorphic to $KK$-theory via the bounded transform. The equivalence relation is formulated entirely at the level of unbounded Kasparov modules and consists of homotopies together with an extra degeneracy condition. Our degenerate unbounded Kasparov modules are called spectrally decomposable since they admit a decomposition into a part with positive spectrum and a part with negative spectrum.

The Podles sphere as a spectral metric space

We study the spectral metric aspects of the standard Podles sphere, which is a homogeneous space for quantum SU(2). The point of departure is the real equivariant spectral triple investigated by Dabrowski and Sitarz. The Dirac operator of this spectral triple interprets the standard Podles sphere as a 0-dimensional space and is therefore not isospectral to the Dirac operator on the 2-sphere. We show that the seminorm coming from commutators with this Dirac operator provides the Podles sphere with the structure of a compact quantum metric space in the sense of Rieffel.

A local global principle for regular operators in Hilbert C*-modules

Hilbert C*-modules are the analogues of Hilbert spaces where a C*-algebra plays the role of the scalar field. With the advent of Kasparov's celebrated KK-theory they became a standard tool in the theory of operator algebras. While the elementary properties of Hilbert C*-modules can be derived basically in parallel to Hilbert space theory the lack of an analogue of the Projection Theorem soon leads to serious obstructions and difficulties. In particular the theory of unbounded operators is notoriously more complicated due to the additional axiom of regularity which is not easy to check. In this paper we present a new criterion for regularity in terms of the Hilbert space localizations of an unbounded operator. We discuss several examples which show that the criterion can easily be checked and that it leads to nontrivial regularity results.

Morita invariance of unbounded bivariant K-theory

We introduce a notion of Morita equivalence for non-selfadjoint operator algebras equipped with a completely isometric involution (operator *-algebras). We then show that the unbounded Kasparov product by a Morita equivalence bimodule induces an isomorphism between equivalence classes of twisted spectral triples over Morita equivalent operator *-algebras. This leads to a tentative definition of unbounded bivariant K-theory and we prove that this bivariant theory is related to Kasparov's bivariant K-theory via the Baaj-Julg bounded transform. Moreover, the unbounded Kasparov product provides a refinement of the usual interior Kasparov product. We illustrate our results by proving C^1-versions of well-known C^*-algebraic Morita equivalences in the context of hereditary subalgebras, conformal equivalences and crossed products by discrete groups.

Riemannian submersions and factorization of Dirac operators

We establish the factorization of Dirac operators on Riemannian submersions of compact spin$^c$ manifolds in unbounded KK-theory. More precisely, we show that the Dirac operator on the total space of such a submersion is unitarily equivalent to the tensor sum of a family of Dirac operators with the Dirac operator on the base space, up to an explicit bounded curvature term. Thus, the latter is an obstruction to having a factorization in unbounded KK-theory. We show that our tensor sum represents the bounded KK-product of the corresponding KK-cycles and connect to the early work of Connes and Skandalis.

On a spectral flow formula for the homological index

Consider a selfadjoint unbounded operator D on a Hilbert space H and a one parameter norm continuous family of selfadjoint bounded operators {A(t)} parametrized by the real line. Then under certain conditions \cite{RS95} that include the assumption that the operators {D(t)= D+A(t)} all have discrete spectrum then the spectral flow along the path { D(t)} can be shown to be equal to the index of d/dt+D(t) when the latter is an unbounded Fredholm operator on L^2(R, H). In \cite{GLMST11} an investigation of the index=spectral flow question when the operators in the path may have some essential spectrum was started but under restrictive assumptions that rule out differential operators in general. In \cite{CGPST14a} the question of what happens when the Fredholm condition is dropped altogether was investigated. In these circumstances the Fredholm index is replaced by the Witten index. In this paper we take the investigation begun in \cite{CGPST14a} much further. We show how to generalise a formula known from the setting of the L^2 index theorem to the non-Fredholm setting. Our main theorem gives a trace formula relating the homological index of \cite{CaKa:TIH} to an integral formula that is known, for a path of selfadjoint Fredholms with compact resolvent and with unitarily equivalent endpoints, to compute spectral flow. Our formula however, applies to paths of selfadjoint non-Fredholm operators. We interpret this as indicating there is a generalisation of spectral flow to the non-Fredholm setting.

Pimsner algebras and Gysin sequences from principal circle actions

A self Morita equivalence over an algebra B, given by a B-bimodule E, is thought of as a line bundle over B. The corresponding Pimsner algebra O_E is then the total space algebra of a noncommutative principal circle bundle over B. A natural Gysin-like sequence relates the KK-theories of O_E and of B. Interesting examples come from O_E a quantum lens space over B a quantum weighted projective line (with arbitrary weights). The KK-theory of these spaces is explicitly computed and natural generators are exhibited.

Anomalies of Dirac type operators on Euclidean space

We develop by example a type of index theory for non-Fredholm operators. A general framework using cyclic homology for this notion of index was introduced in a separate article [CaKa13] where it may be seen to generalise earlier ideas of Carey-Pincus and Gesztesy-Simon on this problem. Motivated by an example in two dimensions in [BGG+87] we introduce in this paper a class of examples of Dirac type operators on R^{2n} that provide non-trivial examples of our homological approach. Our examples may be seen as extending old ideas about the notion of anomaly introduced by physicists to handle topological terms in quantum action principles with an important difference, namely we are dealing with purely geometric data that can be seen to arise from the continuous spectrum of our Dirac type operators.

Canonical holomorphic sections of determinant line bundles

We investigate the analytic properties of torsion isomorphisms (determinants) of mapping cone triangles of Fredholm complexes. Our main tool is a generalization to Fredholm complexes of the perturbation isomorphisms constructed by R. Carey and J. Pincus for Fredholm operators. A perturbation isomorphism is a canonical isomorphism of determinants of homology groups associated to a finite rank perturbation of Fredholm complexes. The perturbation isomorphisms allow us to establish the invariance properties of the torsion isomorphisms under finite rank perturbations. We then show that the perturbation isomorphisms provide a holomorphic structure on the determinant lines over the space of Fredholm complexes. Finally, we establish that the torsion isomorphisms and the perturbation isomorphisms provide holomorphic sections of certain determinant line bundles.

Differentiable absorption of Hilbert C*-modules, connections, and lifts of unbounded operators

The Kasparov absorption (or stabilization) theorem states that any countably generated Hilbert C*-module is isomorphic to a direct summand in the standard module of square summable sequences in the base C*-algebra. In this paper, this result will be generalized by incorporating a densely defined derivation on the base C*-algebra. This leads to a differentiable version of the Kasparov absorption theorem. The extra compatibility assumptions needed are minimal: It will only be required that there exists a sequence of generators with mutual inner products in the domain of the derivation. The differentiable absorption theorem is then applied to construct densely defined connections (or correspondences) on Hilbert C*-modules. These connections can in turn be used to define selfadjoint and regular "lifts" of unbounded operators which act on an auxiliary Hilbert C*-module.

Tate tame symbol and the joint torsion of commuting operators

We investigate determinants of Koszul complexes of holomorphic functions of a commuting tuple of bounded operators acting on a Hilbert space. Our main result shows that the analytic joint torsion, which compares two such determinants, can be computed by a local formula which involves a tame symbol of the involved holomorphic functions. As an application we are able to extend the classical tame symbol of meromorphic functions on a Riemann surface to the more involved setting of transversal functions on a complex analytic curve. This follows by spelling out our main result in the case of Toeplitz operators acting on the Hardy space over the polydisc.

Topological invariance of the homological index

R. W. Carey and J. Pincus in [CaPi86] proposed and index theory for non-Fredholm bounded operators T on a separable Hilbert space H such that TT* - T*T is in the trace class. We showed in [CGK13] using Dirac-type operators acting on sections of bundles over R^{2n} that we could construct bounded operators T satisfying the more general condition that (1-TT*)^n - (1-T*T)^n is trace class. We proposed there a "homological" index for these Dirac-type operators given by Tr( (1-TT*)^n - (1-T*T)^n ). In this paper we show that the index introduced in [CGK13] represents the result of a pairing between a cyclic homology theory for the algebra generated by T and T* and its dual cohomology theory. This leads us to establish homotopy invariance of our homological index (in the sense of cyclic theory). We are then able to define in a very general fashion a homological index for certain unbounded operators and prove invariance of this index under a class of unbounded perturbations.

A Serre-Swan theorem for bundles of bounded geometry

The Serre-Swan theorem in differential geometry establishes an equivalence between the category of smooth vector bundles over a smooth compact manifold and the category of finitely generated projective modules over the unital ring of smooth functions. This theorem is here generalized to manifolds of bounded geometry. In this context it states that the category of Hilbert bundles of bounded geometry is equivalent to the category of operator *-modules over the operator *-algebra of continuously differentiable functions which vanish at infinity. Operator *-modules are generalizations of Hilbert C*-modules where C*-algebras have been replaced by a more flexible class of involutive algebras of bounded operators: Operator *-algebras. They play an important role in the study of the unbounded Kasparov product.

A transformation rule for the index of commuting operators

In the setting of several commuting operators on a Hilbert space one defines the notions of invertibility and Fredholmness in terms of the associated Koszul complex. The index problem then consists of computing the Euler characteristic of such a special type of Fredholm complex. In this paper we investigate transformation rules for the index under the holomorphic functional calculus. We distinguish between two different types of index results: 1) A global index theorem which expresses the index in terms of the degree function of the "symbol" and the locally constant index function of the "coordinates". 2) A local index theorem which computes the Euler characteristic of a localized Koszul complex near a common zero of the "symbol". Our results apply to the example of Toeplitz operators acting on both Bergman spaces over pseudoconvex domains and the Hardy space over the polydisc. The local index theorem is fundamental for future investigations of determinants and torsion of Koszul complexes.

A twisted spectral triple for quantum SU(2)

We initiate the study of a q-deformed geometry for quantum SU(2). In contrast with the usual properties of a spectral triple, we get that only twisted commutators between algebra elements and our Dirac operator are bounded. Furthermore, the resolvent only becomes compact when measured with respect to a trace on a semifinite von Neumann algebra which does not contain the quantum group. We show that the zeta function at the identity has a meromorphic continuation to the whole complex plane and that a large family of local Hochschild cocycles associated with our twisted spectral triple are twisted coboundaries.

On modular semifinite index theory

We propose a definition of a modular spectral triple which covers existing examples arising from KMS-states, Podles sphere and quantum SU(2). The definition also incorporates the notion of twisted commutators appearing in recent work of Connes and Moscovici. We show how a finitely summable modular spectral triple admits a twisted index pairing with unitaries satisfying a modular condition. The twist means that the dimensions of kernels and cokernels are measured with respect to two different but intimately related traces. The twisted index pairing can be expressed by pairing Chern characters in reduced versions of twisted cyclic theories. We end the paper by giving a local formula for the reduced Chern character in the case of quantum SU(2). It appears as a twisted coboundary of the Haar-state. In particular we present an explicit computation of the twisted index pairing arising from the sequence of corepresentation unitaries. As an important tool we construct a family of derived integration spaces associated with a weight and a trace on a semifinite von Neumann algebra.

Spectral flow and the unbounded Kasparov product

We present a fairly general construction of unbounded representatives for the interior Kasparov product. As a main tool we develop a theory of C^1-connections on operator * modules; we do not require any smoothness assumptions; our sigma-unitality assumptions are minimal. Furthermore, we use work of Kucerovsky and our recent Local Global Principle for regular operators in Hilbert C*-modules. As an application we show that the Spectral Flow Theorem and more generally the index theory of Dirac-Schrödinger operators can be nicely explained in terms of the interior Kasparov product.

Invariance results for pairings with algebraic K-theory

To each algebra over the complex numbers we associate a sequence of abelian groups in a contravariant functorial way. In degree (m-1) we have the m-summable Fredholm modules over the algebra modulo stable m-summable perturbations. These new finitely summable K-homology groups pair with cyclic homology and algebraic K-theory. In the case of cyclic homology the pairing is induced by the Chern-Connes character. The pairing between algebraic K-theory and finitely summable K-homology is induced by the Connes-Karoubi multiplicative character.

Joint torsion of several commuting operators

We introduce the notion of joint torsion for several commuting operators satisfying a Fredholm condition. This new secondary invariant takes values in the group of invertibles of a field. It is constructed by comparing determinants associated with different filtrations of a Koszul complex. Our notion of joint torsion generalizes the Carey-Pincus joint torsion of a pair of commuting Fredholm operators. As an example, under more restrictive invertibility assumptions, we show that the joint torsion recovers the multiplicative Lefschetz numbers. Furthermore, in the case of Toeplitz operators over the polydisc we provide a link between the joint torsion and the Cauchy integral formula. We will also consider the algebraic properties of the joint torsion. They include a cocycle property, a symmetry property, a triviality property and a multiplicativity property. The proof of these results relies on a quite general comparison theorem for vertical and horizontal torsion isomorphisms associated with certain diagrams of chain complexes.
