One-way Phonon Isolation In Acoustic Waveguides

We present a method to achieve one-way mode isolation in acoustic waveguides by considering spatio-temporal modulation of material properties. Mode conversion between symmetric and antisymmetric shear horizontal (SH) modes of an unbounded plate acoustic waveguide is demonstrated using this method. Analytical and numerical evidence for the possibility of mode conversion is presented. Possible experimental implementation and applications for on chip signal isolation in MEMS devices are also suggested.

A Rayleigh Bénard Convective Instability Study Using Energy Conserving Dissipative Particle Dynamics

A Rayleigh Bénard instability study using the energy conserving dissipative particle dynamics method is presented here for the first time. The simulation is performed on an ideal dissipative particle dynamics fluid in a three dimensional domain with carefully selected parameters to make the convection terms in the equation more dominant than the conduction ones. Beyond a critical temperature difference a two cell pattern is observed as the dominant structure. As the temperature is increased further, the density changes in the system are sharp with formation of distinct high density layers close to the cold wall. Doubling the length of the domain led to the formation of four convection cells with the same cell diameter as before, confirming the invariance of the pattern formation in that dimension. Changes in the height of the domain led to cells with more uniform looking patterns. The results and patterns seen here are qualitatively similar to previous studies performed on rarefied gases.

Homogeneous Vapor Nucleation Using Isothermal Multibody Dissipative Particle Dynamics

Homogeneous nucleation of a vapor bubble from a bulk metastable phase is studied here for the first time using the multibody dissipative particle dynamics model. The van der Waals equation of state is used to define a conservative force that describes the model fluid used in this study. Additional computational tools were developed to help visualize the vapor bubble formed in the system. Continuum thermodynamic ideas are used to help identify the bubble interface and separate particles that constitute the vapor bubble and bulk liquid regions respectively. Using this idea, the density variation is found to vary smoothly from the liquid to vapor regions in the system. The square-gradient term that arises from the free energy expansion of the density is found to have no significant effect on the radial local density variation.
