Rigidity results for non-Kähler Calabi-Yau geometries on threefolds

We derive a canonical symmetry reduction associated to a compact non-Kähler Bismut-Hermitian-Einstein manifold. In real dimension $6$, the transverse geometry is conformally Kähler, and we give a complete description in terms of a single scalar PDE for the underlying Kähler structure. In the case when the soliton potential is constant, we show that that the Bott-Chern number $h^{1,1}_{BC} \geq 2$, and that equality holds if and only if the metric is Bismut-flat, and hence a quotient of either $\SU(2) \times \mathbb R \times \mathbb C$ or $\SU(2) \times \SU(2)$.

Bochner formulas, functional inequalities and generalized Ricci flow

As a consequence of the Bochner formula for the Bismut connection acting on gradients, we show sharp universal Poincaré and log-Sobolev inequalities along solutions to generalized Ricci flow. Using the two-form potential we define a twisted connection on spacetime which determines an adapted Brownian motion on the frame bundle, yielding an adapted Malliavin gradient on path space. We show a Bochner formula for this operator, leading to characterizations of generalized Ricci flow in terms of universal Poincaré and log-Sobolev type inequalities for the associated Malliavin gradient and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator.

Generalized Kähler-Ricci flow on toric Fano varieties

We study the generalized Kähler-Ricci flow with initial data of symplectic type, and show that this condition is preserved. In the case of a Fano background with toric symmetry, we establish global existence of the normalized flow. We derive an extension of Perelman's entropy functional to this setting, which yields convergence of nonsingular solutions at infinity. Furthermore, we derive an extension of Mabuchi's $K$-energy to this setting, which yields weak convergence of the flow.

Scalar curvature, entropy, and generalized Ricci flow

We derive a family of weighted scalar curvature monotonicity formulas for generalized Ricci flow, involving an auxiliary dilaton field evolving by a certain reaction-diffusion equation motivated by renormalization group flow. These scalar curvature monotonicities are dual to a new family of Perelman-type energy and entropy monotonicity formulas by coupling to a solution of the associated weighted conjugate heat equation. In the setting of Ricci flow, we further obtain a new family of convex Nash entropies and pseudolocality principles.

The Gibbons-Hawking ansatz in generalized Kähler geometry

We derive a local ansatz for generalized Kähler surfaces with nondegenerate Poisson structure and a biholomorphic $S^1$ action which generalizes the classic Gibbons-Hawking ansatz for invariant hyperKähler manifolds, and allows for the choice of one arbitrary function. By imposing the generalized Kähler-Ricci soliton equation, or equivalently the equations of type IIB string theory, the construction becomes rigid, and we classify all complete solutions with the smallest possible symmetry group.

Generalized Ricci Flow

This book gives an introduction to fundamental aspects of generalized Riemannian, complex, and Kähler geometry. This leads to an extension of the classical Einstein-Hilbert action, which yields natural extensions of Einstein and Calabi-Yau structures as `canonical metrics' in generalized Riemannian and complex geometry. The generalized Ricci flow is introduced as a tool for constructing such metrics, and extensions of the fundamental Hamilton/Perelman regularity theory of Ricci flow are proved. These results are refined in the setting of generalized complex geometry, where the generalized Ricci flow is shown to preserve various integrability conditions, taking the form of pluriclosed flow and generalized Kähler-Ricci flow. This leads to global convergence results, and applications to complex geometry. A purely mathematical introduction to the physical idea of T-duality is given, and a discussion of its relationship to generalized Ricci flow.

On a Calabi-type estimate for pluriclosed flow

The regularity theory for pluriclosed flow hinges on obtaining $C^α$ regularity for the metric assuming uniform equivalence to a background metric. This estimate was established in \cite{StreetsPCFBI} by an adaptation of ideas from Evans-Krylov, the key input being a sharp differential inequality satisfied by the associated `generalized metric' defined on $T \oplus T^*$. In this work we give a sharpened form of this estimate with a simplified proof. To begin we show that the generalized metric itself evolves by a natural curvature quantity, which leads quickly to an estimate on the associated Chern connections analogous to, and generalizing, Calabi-Yau's $C^3$ estimate for the complex Monge Ampere equation.

Index-energy estimates for Yang-Mills connections and Einstein metrics

We prove a conformally invariant estimate for the index of Schrödinger operators acting on vector bundles over four-manifolds, related to the classical Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum estimate. Applied to Yang-Mills connections we obtain a bound for the index in terms of its energy which is conformally invariant, and captures the sharp growth rate. Furthermore we derive an index estimate for Einstein metrics in terms of the topology and the Einstein-Hilbert energy. Lastly we derive conformally invariant estimates for the Betti numbers of an oriented four-manifold with positive scalar curvature.

Global viscosity solutions of generalized Kahler-Ricci flow

We apply ideas from viscosity theory to establish the existence of a unique global weak solution to the generalized Kahler-Ricci flow in the setting of commuting complex structures. Our results are restricted to the case of a smooth manifold with smooth background data. We discuss the possibility of extending these results to more singular settings, pointing out a key error in the existing literature on viscosity solutions to complex Monge-Ampere equations/Kahler-Ricci flow.

A formal Riemannian structure on conformal classes and the inverse Gauss curvature flow

We define a formal Riemannian metric on a given conformal class of metrics on a closed Riemann surface. We show interesting formal properties for this metric, in particular the curvature is nonpositive and the Liouville energy is geodesically convex. The geodesic equation for this metric corresponds to a degenerate elliptic fully nonlinear PDE, and we prove that any two points are connected by a $C^{1,1}$ geodesic. Using this we can define a length space structure on the given conformal class. We present a different approach to the uniformization theorem by studying the negative gradient flow of the normalized Liouville energy, a new geometric flow whose principal term is the inverse of the Gauss curvature. We prove long time existence of solutions with arbitrary initial data and weak convergence to constant scalar curvature metrics. This is all a special case of a more general construction on even dimensional manifolds related to the $σ_{\frac{n}{2}}$-Yamabe problem, which will appear in a forthcoming article.

A Geometric View of Posterior Approximation

Although Bayesian methods are robust and principled, their application in practice could be limited since they typically rely on computationally intensive Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms for their implementation. One possible solution is to find a fast approximation of posterior distribution and use it for statistical inference. For commonly used approximation methods, such as Laplace and variational free energy, the objective is mainly defined in terms of computational convenience as opposed to a true distance measure between the target and approximating distributions. In this paper, we provide a geometric view of posterior approximation based on a valid distance measure derived from ambient Fisher geometry. Our proposed framework is easily generalizable and can inspire a new class of methods for approximate Bayesian inference.

Pluriclosed flow on generalized Kähler manifolds with split tangent bundle

We show that the pluriclosed flow preserves generalized Kähler structures with the extra condition $[J_+,J_-] = 0$, a condition referred to as "split tangent bundle." Moreover, we show that in this in this case the flow reduces to a nonconvex fully nonlinear parabolic flow of a scalar potential function. We prove a number of a priori estimates for this equation, including a general estimate in dimension $n=2$ of Evans-Krylov type requiring a new argument due to the nonconvexity of the equation. The main result is a long time existence theorem for the flow in dimension $n=2$, covering most cases. We also show that the pluriclosed flow represents the parabolic analogue to an elliptic problem which is a very natural generalization of the Calabi conjecture to the setting of generalized Kähler geometry with split tangent bundle.

Pluriclosed flow, Born-Infeld geometry, and rigidity results for generalized Kähler manifolds

We prove long time existence and convergence results for the pluriclosed flow, which imply geometric and topological classification theorems for generalized Kähler structures. Our approach centers on the reduction of pluriclosed flow to a degenerate parabolic equation for a $(1,0)$-form, introduced in \cite{ST2}. We observe a number of differential inequalities satisfied by this system which lead to a priori $L^{\infty}$ estimates for the metric along the flow. Moreover we observe an unexpected connection to "Born-Infeld geometry" which leads to a sharp differential inequality which can be used to derive an Evans-Krylov type estimate for the degenerate parabolic system of equations. To show convergence of the flow we generalize Yau's oscillation estimate to the setting of generalized Kähler geometry.

Wormhole Hamiltonian Monte Carlo

In machine learning and statistics, probabilistic inference involving multimodal distributions is quite difficult. This is especially true in high dimensional problems, where most existing algorithms cannot easily move from one mode to another. To address this issue, we propose a novel Bayesian inference approach based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo. Our method can effectively sample from multimodal distributions, especially when the dimension is high and the modes are isolated. To this end, it exploits and modifies the Riemannian geometric properties of the target distribution to create \emph{wormholes} connecting modes in order to facilitate moving between them. Further, our proposed method uses the regeneration technique in order to adapt the algorithm by identifying new modes and updating the network of wormholes without affecting the stationary distribution. To find new modes, as opposed to rediscovering those previously identified, we employ a novel mode searching algorithm that explores a \emph{residual energy} function obtained by subtracting an approximate Gaussian mixture density (based on previously discovered modes) from the target density function.

A concentration-collapse decomposition for $L^2$ flow singularities

We exhibit a concentration-collapse decomposition of singularities of fourth order curvature flows, including the $L^2$ curvature flow and Calabi flow, in dimensions $n \leq 4$. The proof requires the development of several new a priori estimates. First, we develop a smoothing result for initial metrics with small energy and a volume growth lower bound, in the vein of Perelman's pseudolocality result. Next, we generalize our technique from prior work to exhibit local smoothing estimates for the $L^2$ flow in the presence of a curvature-related bound. A final key ingredient is a new local $ε$-regularity result for $L^2$-critical metrics with possibly nonconstant scalar curvature. Applications of these results include new compactness and diffeomorphism-finiteness theorems for smooth compact four-manifolds satisfying the necessary and effectively minimal hypotheses of $L^2$ curvature pinching and a volume noncollapsing condition.

Existence of Complete conformal metrics of negative Ricci curvature on manifolds with boundary

We show that on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary there exists $u \in C^{\infty}(M)$ such that, $u_{|\partial M} \equiv 0$ and $u$ solves the $σ_k$-Ricci problem. In the case $k = n$ the metric has negative Ricci curvature. Furthermore, we show the existence of a complete conformally related metric on the interior solving the $σ_k$-Ricci problem. By adopting results of Mazzeo-Pacard, we show an interesting relationship between the complete metrics we construct and the existence of Poincaré-Einstein metrics. Finally we give a brief discussion of the corresponding questions in the case of positive curvature.

Generalized geometry, T-duality, and renormalization group flow

We interpret the physical $B$-field renormalization group flow in the language of Courant algebroids, clarifying the sense in which this flow is the natural "Ricci flow" for generalized geometry. Next we show that the $B$-field renormalization group flow preserves T-duality in a natural sense. As corollaries we obtain new long time existence results for the $B$-field renormalization group flow.

Generalized Kahler Geometry and the Pluriclosed Flow

In prior work the authors introduced a parabolic flow for pluriclosed metrics, referred to as pluriclosed flow. We also demonstrated that this flow, after certain gauge transformations, gives a class of solutions to the renormalization group flow of the nonlinear sigma model with B-field. Using these transformations, we show that our pluriclosed flow preserves generalized Kahler structures in a natural way. Equivalently, when coupled with a nontrivial evolution equation for the two complex structures, the B-field renormalization group flow also preserves generalized Kahler structure. We emphasize that it is crucial to evolve the complex structures in the right way to establish this fact.

Symplectic curvature flow

We introduce a parabolic flow of almost Kahler structures, providing an approach to constructing canonical geometric structures on symplectic manifolds. We exhibit this flow as one of a family of parabolic flows of almost Hermitian structures, generalizing our previous work on parabolic flows of Hermitian metrics. We exhibit a long time existence obstruction for solutions to this flow by showing certain smoothing estimates for the curvature and torsion. We end with a discussion of the limiting objects as well as some open problems related to the symplectic curvature flow.

preprint2011arXiv

The long time behavior of fourth-order curvature flows

We show precompactness results for solutions to parabolic fourth order geometric evolution equations. As part of the proof we obtain smoothing estimates for these flows in the presence of a curvature bound, an improvement on prior results which also require a Sobolev constant bound. As consequences of these results we show that for any solution with a finite time singularity, the $L^{\infty}$ norm of the curvature must go to infinity. Furthermore, we characterize the behavior at infinity of solutions with bounded curvature.

Parabolic optimal transport equations on manifolds

We study a parabolic equation for finding solutions to the optimal transport problem on compact Riemannian manifolds with general cost functions. We show that if the cost satisfies the strong MTW condition and the stay-away singularity property, then the solution to the parabolic flow with any appropriate initial condition exists for all time and it converges exponentially to the solution to the optimal transportation problem. Such results hold in particular, on the sphere for the distance squared cost of the round metric and for the far-field reflector antenna cost, among others.
