Localization and nilpotent spaces in A^1-homotopy theory

For a subring $R$ of the rational numbers, we study $R$-localization functors in the local homotopy theory of simplicial presheaves on a small site and then in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory. To this end, we introduce and analyze two notions of nilpotence for spaces in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory paying attention to future applications for vector bundles. We show that $R$-localization behaves in a controlled fashion for the nilpotent spaces we consider. We show that the classifying space $BGL_n$ is ${\mathbb A}^1$-nilpotent when $n$ is odd, and analyze the (more complicated) situation where $n$ is even as well. We establish analogs of various classical results about rationalization in the context of ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory: if $-1$ is a sum of squares in the base field, ${\mathbb A}^n \setminus 0$ is rationally equivalent to a suitable motivic Eilenberg--Mac Lane space, and the special linear group decomposes as a product of motivic spheres.

Milnor-Witt Motives

We develop the theory of Milnor-Witt motives and motivic cohomology. Compared to Voevodsky's theory of motives and his motivic cohomology, the first difference appears in our definition of Milnor-Witt finite correspondences, where our cycles come equipped with quadratic forms. This yields a weaker notion of transfers and a derived category of motives that is closer to the stable homotopy theory of schemes. We prove a cancellation theorem when tensoring with the Tate object, we compare the diagonal part of our Milnor-Witt motivic cohomology to Minor-Witt K-theory and we provide spectra representing various versions of motivic cohomology in the $\mathbb{A}^1$-derived category or the stable homotopy category of schemes.

The Borel character

The main purpose of this article is to define a quadratic analog of the Chern character, the so-called Borel character, which identifies rational higher Grothendieck-Witt groups with a sum of rational MW-motivic cohomologies and rational motivic cohomologies. We also discuss the notion of ternary laws due to Walter, a quadratic analog of formal group laws, and compute what we call the additive ternary laws, associated with MW-motivic cohomology. Finally, we provide an application of the Borel character by showing that the Milnor-Witt K-theory of a field F embeds into suitable higher Grothendieck-Witt groups of F modulo explicit torsion.

Secondary characteristic classes and the Euler class

We discuss secondary (and higher) characteristic classes for algebraic vector bundles with trivial top Chern class. We show that if X is a smooth affine scheme of dimension d over a field k of finite 2-cohomological dimension (with char(k) $\neq$ 2) and E is a rank d vector bundle over X, vanishing of the Chow-Witt theoretic Euler class of E is equivalent to vanishing of its top Chern class and these higher classes. We then derive some consequences of our main theorem when k is of small 2-cohomological dimension.

Smooth models of motivic spheres

We study the representability of motivic spheres by smooth varieties. We show that certain explicit "split" quadric hypersurfaces have the $\mathbb A^1$-homotopy type of motivic spheres over the integers and that the $\mathbb A^1$-homotopy types of other motivic spheres do not contain smooth schemes as representatives. We then study some applications of these representability/non-representability results to the construction of new exotic $\mathbb A^1$-contractible smooth schemes. Then, we study vector bundles on even dimensional "split" quadric hypersurfaces by developing an algebro-geometric variant of the classical construction of vector bundles on spheres via clutching functions.

A cohomological classification of vector bundles on smooth affine threefolds

We give a cohomological classification of vector bundles of rank $2$ on a smooth affine threefold over an algebraically closed field having characteristic unequal to $2$. As a consequence we deduce that cancellation holds for rank $2$ vector bundles on such varieties. The proofs of these results involve three main ingredients. First, we give a description of the first non-stable ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy sheaf of the symplectic group. Second, these computations can be used in concert with F. Morel's ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy classification of vector bundles on smooth affine schemes and obstruction theoretic techniques (stemming from a version of the Postnikov tower in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory) to reduce the classification results to cohomology vanishing statements. Third, we prove the required vanishing statements.

Splitting vector bundles outside the stable range and A^1-homotopy sheaves of punctured affine spaces

We discuss the relationship between the ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy sheaves of ${\mathbb A}^n \setminus 0$ and the problem of splitting off a trivial rank $1$ summand from a rank $n$-vector bundle. We begin by computing $π_3^{{\mathbb A}^1}({\mathbb A}^3 \setminus 0)$, and providing a host of related computations of "non-stable" ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy sheaves. We then use our computation to deduce that a rank $3$ vector bundle on a smooth affine $4$-fold over an algebraically closed field having characteristic unequal to $2$ splits off a trivial rank $1$ summand if and only if its third Chern class (in Chow theory) is trivial. This result provides a positive answer to a case of a conjecture of M.P. Murthy.

Trivial Witt groups of flag varieties

Let G be a split semi-simple linear algebraic group over a field, let P be a parabolic subgroup and let L be a line bundle on the projective homogeneous variety G/P. We give a simple condition on the class of L in Pic(G/P)/2 in terms of Dynkin diagrams implying that the Witt groups W^i(G/P,L) are zero for all integers i. In particular, if B is a Borel subgroup, then W^i(G/B,L) is zero unless L is trivial in Pic(G/B)/2.
