Intertwining operator and integrable hierarchies from topological strings

In [1], Nakatsu and Takasaki have shown that the melting crystal model behind the topological strings vertex provides a tau-function of the KP hierarchy after an appropriate time deformation. We revisit their derivation with a focus on the underlying quantum $W_{1+\infty}$ symmetry. Specifically, we point out the role played by automorphisms and the connection with the intertwiner - or vertex operator - of the algebra. This algebraic perspective allows us to extend part of their derivation to the refined melting crystal model, lifting the algebra to the quantum toroidal algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}(1)$ (also called Ding-Iohara-Miki algebra). In this way, we take a first step toward the definition of deformed hierarchies associated to A-model refined topological strings.

New quantum toroidal algebras from 5D $\mathcal{N}=1$ instantons on orbifolds

Quantum toroidal algebras are obtained from quantum affine algebras by a further affinization, and, like the latter, can be used to construct integrable systems. These algebras also describe the symmetries of instanton partition functions for 5D $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. We consider here the gauge theories defined on an orbifold $S^1\times\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_p$ where the action of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is determined by two integer parameters $(ν_1,ν_2)$. The corresponding quantum toroidal algebra is introduced as a deformation of the quantum toroidal algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}(p)$. We show that it has the structure of a Hopf algebra, and present two representations, called vertical and horizontal, obtained by deforming respectively the Fock representation and Saito's vertex representations of the quantum toroidal algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}(p)$. We construct the vertex operator intertwining between these two types of representations. This object is identified with a $(ν_1,ν_2)$-deformation of the refined topological vertex, allowing us to reconstruct the Nekrasov partition function and the $qq$-characters of the quiver gauge theories.

Holomorphic field realization of SH$^c$ and quantum geometry of quiver gauge theories

In the context of 4D/2D dualities, SH$^c$ algebra, introduced by Schiffmann and Vasserot, provides a systematic method to analyse the instanton partition functions of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories. In this paper, we rewrite the SH$^c$ algebra in terms of three holomorphic fields $D_0(z)$, $D_{\pm1}(z)$ with which the algebra and its epresentations are simplified. The instanton partition functions for arbitrary $\mathcal{N}=2$ super Yang-Mills theories with $A_n$ and $A^{(1)}_n$ type quiver diagrams are compactly expressed as a product of four building blocks: Gaiotto state, dilatation, flavor vertex operator and intertwiner which are written in terms of SH$^c$ and the orthogonal basis introduced by Alba, Fateev, Litvinov and Tarnopolskiy. These building blocks are characterized by new conditions which generalize the known ones on the Gaiotto state and the Carlsson-Okounkov vertex. Consistency conditions of the inner product give algebraic relations for the chiral ring generating functions defined by Nekrasov, Pestun and Shatashvili. In particular we show the polynomiality of the qq-characters which have been introduced as a deformation of the Yangian characters. These relations define a second quantization of the Seiberg-Witten geometry, and, accordingly, reduce to a Baxter TQ-equation in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the Omega-background.

Finite $ε_2$-corrections to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM prepotential

We derive the first $ε_2$-correction to the instanton partition functions of $\mathcal{N}=2$ Super Yang-Mills (SYM) in four dimensions in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit $ε_2\rightarrow 0$. In the latter we recall the emergence of the famous Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz-like equation which has been found by Mayer expansion techniques. Here we combine efficiently these to field theory arguments. In a nutshell, we find natural and resolutive the introduction of a new operator $\nabla$ that distinguishes the singularities within and outside the integration contour of the partition function.

Mayer expansion of the Nekrasov pre potential: the subleading $ε_2$-order

The Mayer cluster expansion technique is applied to the Nekrasov instanton partition function of $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N_c)$ super Yang-Mills. The subleading small $ε_2$-correction to the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limiting value of the prepotential is determined by a detailed analysis of all the one-loop diagrams. Indeed, several types of contributions can be distinguished according to their origin: long range interaction or potential expansion, clusters self-energy, internal structure, one-loop cyclic diagrams, etc.. The field theory result derived more efficiently in [1], under some minor technical assumptions, receives here definite confirmation thanks to several remarkable cancellations: in this way, we may infer the validity of these assumptions for further computations in the field theoretical approach.

Confinement and Mayer cluster expansions

In these notes, we study a class of grand-canonical partition functions with a kernel depending on a small parameter $ε$. This class is directly relevant to Nekrasov partition functions of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY gauge theories on the 4d $Ω$-background, for which $ε$ is identified with one of the equivariant deformation parameter. In the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit $ε\to0$, we show that the free energy is given by an on-shell effective action. The equations of motion take the form of a TBA equation. The free energy is identified with the Yang-Yang functional of the corresponding system of Bethe roots. We further study the associated canonical model that takes the form of a generalized matrix model. Confinement of the eigenvalues by the short-range potential is observed. In the limit where this confining potential becomes weak, the collective field theory formulation is recovered. Finally, we discuss the connection with the alternative expression of instanton partition functions as sums over Young tableaux.

Notes on Mayer Expansions and Matrix Models

Mayer cluster expansion is an important tool in statistical physics to evaluate grand canonical partition functions. It has recently been applied to the Nekrasov instanton partition function of $\mathcal{N}=2$ 4d gauge theories. The associated canonical model involves coupled integrations that take the form of a generalized matrix model. It can be studied with the standard techniques of matrix models, in particular collective field theory and loop equations. In the first part of these notes, we explain how the results of collective field theory can be derived from the cluster expansion. The equalities between free energies at first orders is explained by the discrete Laplace transform relating canonical and grand canonical models. In a second part, we study the canonical loop equations and associate them to similar relations on the grand canonical side. It leads to relate the multi-point densities, fundamental objects of the matrix model, to the generating functions of multi-rooted clusters. Finally, a method is proposed to derive loop equations directly on the grand canonical model.

Spherical Hecke algebra in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit

The Spherical Hecke central (SHc) algebra has been shown to act on the Nekrasov instanton partition functions of $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories. Its presence accounts for both integrability and AGT correspondence. On the other hand, a specific limit of the Omega background, introduced by Nekrasov and Shatashvili (NS), leads to the appearance of TBA and Bethe like equations. To unify these two points of view, we study the NS limit of the SHc algebra. We provide an expression of the instanton partition function in terms of Bethe roots, and define a set of operators that generates infinitesimal variations of the roots. These operators obey the commutation relations defining the SHc algebra at first order in the equivariant parameter $ε_2$. Furthermore, their action on the bifundamental contributions reproduces the Kanno-Matsuo-Zhang transformation. We also discuss the connections with the Mayer cluster expansion approach that leads to TBA-like equations.

Large N techniques for Nekrasov partition functions and AGT conjecture

The AGT conjecture relates \mathcal{N}=2 4d SUSY gauge theories to 2d CFTs. Matrix model techniques can be used to investigate both sides of this relation. The large N limit refers here to the size of Young tableaux in the expression of the gauge theory partition function. It corresponds to the vanishing of Omega-background equivariant deformation parameters, and should not be confused with the t'Hooft expansion at large number of colors. In this paper, a saddle point approach is employed to study the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the gauge theory, leading to define beta-deformed, or quantized, Seiberg-Witten curve and differential form. Then this formalism is compared to the large N limit of the Dijkgraaf-Vafa beta-ensemble. A transformation law relating the wave functions appearing at both sides of the conjecture is proposed. It implies a transformation of the Seiberg-Witten 1-form in agreement with the definition specified earlier. As a side result, a remarkable property of \mathcal{N}=2 theories emerged: the instanton contribution to the partition function can be determined from the perturbative term analysis.

A note on the integral equation for the Wilson loop in N = 2 D=4 superconformal Yang-Mills theory

We propose an alternative method to study the saddle point equation in the strong coupling limit for the Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=2$ D=4 super Yang-Mills with an SU(N) gauge group and 2N hypermultiplets. This method is based on an approximation of the integral equation kernel which allows to solve the simplified problem exactly. To determine the accuracy of this approximation, we compare our results to those obtained recently by Passerini and Zarembo. Although less precise, this simpler approach provides an explicit expression for the density of eigenvalues that is used to derive the planar free energy.

Large N limit of beta-ensembles and deformed Seiberg-Witten relations

We study the beta-ensemble that represents conformal blocks of Liouville theory on the sphere. This quantity is related through AGT conjecture to the Nekrasov instanton partition function of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SU(2) gauge theory with four flavors. We focus on the large N limit, equivalent to the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit where one of the Omega-background deformation parameters is vanishing. A quantized Seiberg-Witten differential form is defined perturbatively in h-bar as the singular part of the beta-ensemble resolvent. Using the Dyson collective field action, we show that the free energy obeys the Seiberg-Witten relations. As suggested by Mironov and Morozov, the quantized differential form can be obtained from the classical one by the action of a differential operator in the hypermultiplet masses and the Coulomb branch modulus.

Bulk-boundary correlators in the hermitian matrix model and minimal Liouville gravity

We construct the one matrix model (MM) correlators corresponding to the general bulk-boundary correlation numbers of the minimal Liouville gravity (LG) on the disc. To find agreement between both discrete and continuous approach, we investigate the resonance transformation mixing boundary and bulk couplings. It leads to consider two sectors, depending on whether the matter part of the LG correlator is vanishing due to the fusion rules. In the vanishing case, we determine the explicit transformation of the boundary couplings at the first order in bulk couplings. In the non-vanishing case, no bulk-boundary resonance is involved and only the first order of pure boundary resonances have to be considered. Those are encoded in the matrix polynomials determined in our previous paper. We checked the agreement for the bulk-boundary correlators of MM and LG in several non-trivial cases. In this process, we developed an alternative method to derive the boundary resonance encoding polynomials.

On the Yang-Lee and Langer singularities in the O(n) loop model

We use the method of `coupling to 2d QG' to study the analytic properties of the universal specific free energy of the O(n) loop model in complex magnetic field. We compute the specific free energy on a dynamical lattice using the correspondence with a matrix model. The free energy has a pair of Yang-Lee edges on the high-temperature sheet and a Langer type branch cut on the low-temperature sheet. Our result confirms a conjecture by A. and Al. Zamolodchikov about the decay rate of the metastable vacuum in presence of Liouville gravity and gives strong evidence about the existence of a weakly metastable state and a Langer branch cut in the O(n) loop model on a flat lattice. Our results are compatible with the Fonseca-Zamolodchikov conjecture that the Yang-Lee edge appears as the nearest singularity under the Langer cut.

Boundary operators in minimal Liouville gravity and matrix models

We interpret the matrix boundaries of the one matrix model (1MM) recently constructed by two of the authors as an outcome of a relation among FZZT branes. In the double scaling limit, the 1MM is described by the (2,2p+1) minimal Liouville gravity. These matrix operators are shown to create a boundary with matter boundary conditions given by the Cardy states. We also demonstrate a recursion relation among the matrix disc correlator with two different boundaries. This construction is then extended to the two matrix model and the disc correlator with two boundaries is compared with the Liouville boundary two point functions. In addition, the realization within the matrix model of several symmetries among FZZT branes is discussed.

Boundary operators in the one-matrix model

The one matrix model is known to reproduce in the continuum limit the (2,2p+1) minimal Liouville gravity. Recently, two of the authors have shown how to construct arbitrary critical boundary conditions within this matrix model. So far, between two such boundary conditions only one boundary operator was constructed. In this paper, we explain how to construct all the set of boundary operators that can be inserted. As a consistency check, we reproduce the corresponding Liouville boundary 2pt function from the matrix model correlator. In addition, we remark a connection between a matrix model relation and the boundary ground ring operator insertion in the continuum theory.

Boundary transitions of the O(n) model on a dynamical lattice

We study the anisotropic boundary conditions for the dilute O(n) loop model with the methods of 2D quantum gravity. We solve the problem exactly on a dynamical lattice using the correspondence with a large $N$ matrix model. We formulate the disk two-point functions with ordinary and anisotropic boundary conditions as loop correlators in the matrix model. We derive the loop equations for these correlators and find their explicit solution in the scaling limit. Our solution reproduces the boundary phase diagram and the boundary critical exponents obtained recently by Dubail, Jacobsen and Saleur, except for the cusp at the isotropic special transition point. Moreover, our solution describes the bulk and the boundary deformations away from the anisotropic special transitions. In particular it shows how the anisotropic special boundary conditions are deformed by the bulk thermal flow towards the dense phase.
