Estimation of time series by Maximum Mean Discrepancy

We define two minimum distance estimators for dependent data by minimizing some approximated Maximum Mean Discrepancy distances between the true empirical distribution of observations and their assumed (parametric) model distribution. When the latter one is intractable, it is approximated by simulation, allowing to accommodate most dynamic processes with latent variables. We derive the non-asymptotic and the large sample properties of our estimators in the context of absolutely regular/beta-mixing random elements. Our simulation experiments illustrate the robustness of our procedures to model misspecification, particularly in comparison with alternative standard estimation methods.

Estimation of copulas via Maximum Mean Discrepancy

This paper deals with robust inference for parametric copula models. Estimation using Canonical Maximum Likelihood might be unstable, especially in the presence of outliers. We propose to use a procedure based on the Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD) principle. We derive non-asymptotic oracle inequalities, consistency and asymptotic normality of this new estimator. In particular, the oracle inequality holds without any assumption on the copula family, and can be applied in the presence of outliers or under misspecification. Moreover, in our MMD framework, the statistical inference of copula models for which there exists no density with respect to the Lebesgue measure on $[0,1]^d$, as the Marshall-Olkin copula, becomes feasible. A simulation study shows the robustness of our new procedures, especially compared to pseudo-maximum likelihood estimation. An R package implementing the MMD estimator for copula models is available.

Identifiability and estimation of meta-elliptical copula generators

Meta-elliptical copulas are often proposed to model dependence between the components of a random vector. They are specified by a correlation matrix and a map $g$, called density generator. While the latter correlation matrix can easily be estimated from pseudo-samples of observations, the density generator is harder to estimate, especially when it does not belong to a parametric family. We give sufficient conditions to non-parametrically identify this generator. Several nonparametric estimators of $g$ are then proposed, by M-estimation, simulation-based inference, or by an iterative procedure available in the R package ElliptCopulas. Some simulations illustrate the relevance of the latter method.

Conditional empirical copula processes and generalized dependence measures

We study the weak convergence of conditional empirical copula processes, when the conditioning event has a nonzero probability. The validity of several bootstrap schemes is stated, including the exchangeable bootstrap. We define general - possibly conditional - multivariate dependence measures and their estimators. By applying our theoretical results, we prove the asymptotic normality of some estimators of such dependence measures.

Testing for equality between conditional copulas given discretized conditioning events

Several procedures have been recently proposed to test the simplifying assumption for conditional copulas. Instead of considering pointwise conditioning events, we study the constancy of the conditional dependence structure when some covariates belong to general borelian conditioning subsets. Several test statistics based on the equality of conditional Kendall's tau are introduced, and we derive their asymptotic distributions under the null. When such conditioning events are not fixed ex ante, we propose a data-driven procedure to recursively build such relevant subsets. It is based on decision trees that maximize the differences between the conditional Kendall's taus corresponding to the leaves of the trees. The performances of such tests are illustrated in a simulation experiment. Moreover, a study of the conditional dependence between financial stock returns is managed, given some clustering of their past values. The last application deals with the conditional dependence between coverage amounts in an insurance dataset.

An asymptotic total variation test for copulas

We propose a new goodness-of-fit test for copulas, based on empirical copula processes and their nonparametric bootstrap counterparts. The standard Kolmogorov-Smirnov type test for copulas that takes the supremum of the empirical copula process indexed by half spaces is extended by test statistics based on the supremum of the empirical copula process indexed by partitions of Ln rectangles with Ln slowly tending to infinity. Although the underlying empirical process does not converge, it is proved that the p-values of our new test statistic can be consistently estimated by the bootstrap. Simulations confirm that the power of the new procedure is higher than the power of the standard Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for copulas.

An overview of the goodness-of-fit test problem for copulas

We review the main "omnibus procedures" for goodness-of-fit testing for copulas: tests based on the empirical copula process, on probability integral transformations, on Kendall's dependence function, etc, and some corresponding reductions of dimension techniques. The problems of finding asymptotic distribution-free test statistics and the calculation of reliable p-values are discussed. Some particular cases, like convenient tests for time-dependent copulas, for Archimedean or extreme-value copulas, etc, are dealt with. Finally, the practical performances of the proposed approaches are briefly summarized.

On break-even correlation: the way to price structured credit derivatives by replication

We consider the pricing of European-style structured credit payoff in a static framework, where the underlying default times are independent given a common factor. A practical application would consist of the pricing of nth-to-default baskets under the Gaussian copula model (GCM). We provide necessary and sufficient conditions so that the corresponding asset prices are martingales and introduce the concept of "break-even" correlation matrix. When no sudden jump-to-default events occur, we show that the perfect replication of these payoffs under the GCM is obtained if and only if the underlying single name credit spreads follow a particular family of dynamics. We calculate the corresponding break-even correlations and we exhibit a class of Merton-style models that are consistent with this result. We explain why the GCM does not have a lot of competitors among the class of one-period static models, except perhaps the Clayton copula.
