Foguel-type operators similar to contractions

Pisier's celebrated counterexample to Halmos's similarity-to-contractions problem was based on $2 \times 2$ upper triangular block operator matrices involving three classical operators: forward and backward shifts on the diagonal and Hankel operators in the off-diagonal entry. Together with another classical object, namely Toeplitz operators, one can formulate another $2^3 -1 = 7$ types of $2 \times 2$ upper triangular block operator matrices, which we refer to as Foguel-type operators. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of all the seven Foguel-type operators being similar to contractions.

Characterizations of complex symmetric Toeplitz operators

We present complete characterizations of Toeplitz operators that are complex symmetric. This follows as a by-product of characterizations of conjugations on Hilbert spaces. Notably, we prove that every conjugation admits a canonical factorization. As a consequence, we prove that a Toeplitz operator is complex symmetric if and only if the Toeplitz operator is $S$-Toeplitz for some unilateral shift $S$ and the transpose of the Toeplitz operator matrix is equal to the matrix of the Toeplitz operator corresponding to the basis of the unilateral shift $S$. Also, we characterize complex symmetric Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space over the open unit polydisc. Our results answer the well known open question about characterizations of complex symmetric Toeplitz operators.

Invariant subspaces of idempotents on Hilbert spaces

In the setting of operators on Hilbert spaces, we prove that every quasinilpotent operator has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace if and only if every pair of idempotents with a quasinilpotent commutator has a non-trivial common closed invariant subspace. We also present a geometric characterization of invariant subspaces of idempotents and classify operators that are essentially idempotent.

Left-invertibility of rank-one perturbations

For each isometry $V$ acting on some Hilbert space and a pair of vectors $f$ and $g$ in the same Hilbert space, we associate a nonnegative number $c(V;f,g)$ defined by \[ c(V; f,g) = (\|f\|^2 - \|V^*f\|^2) \|g\|^2 + |1 + \langle V^*f , g\rangle|^2. \] We prove that the rank-one perturbation $V + f \otimes g$ is left-invertible if and only if \[ c(V;f,g) \neq 0. \] We also consider examples of rank-one perturbations of isometries that are shift on some Hilbert space of analytic functions. Here, shift refers to the operator of multiplication by the coordinate function $z$. Finally, we examine $D + f \otimes g$, where $D$ is a diagonal operator with nonzero diagonal entries and $f$ and $g$ are vectors with nonzero Fourier coefficients. We prove that $D + f\otimes g$ is left-invertible if and only if $D+f\otimes g$ is invertible.

Orthogonal decompositions and twisted isometries

Let $n > 1$. Let $\{U_{ij}\}_{1 \leq i < j \leq n}$ be $\binom{n}{2}$ commuting unitaries on some Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, and suppose $U_{ji} := U_{ij}^*$, $1 \leq i < j \leq n$. An $n$-tuple of isometries $V = (V_1, \ldots ,V_n)$ on $\mathcal{H}$ is called $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted isometry with respect to $\{U_{ij}\}_{i<j}$ (or simply $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted isometry if $\{U_{ij}\}_{i<j}$ is clear from the context) if $V_i$'s are in the commutator $\{U_{st}: s \neq t\}'$, and $V_i^*V_j=U_{ij}^*V_jV_i^*$, $i \neq j$ We prove that each $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted isometry admits a von Neumann-Wold type orthogonal decomposition, and prove that the universal $C^*$-algebra generated by $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted isometry is nuclear. We exhibit concrete analytic models of $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted isometries, and establish connections between unitary equivalence classes of the irreducible representations of the $C^*$-algebras generated by $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted isometries and the unitary equivalence classes of the non-zero irreducible representations of twisted noncommutative tori. Our motivation of $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted isometries stems from the classical rotation $C^*$-algebras, Heisenberg group $C^*$-algebras, and a recent work of de Jeu and Pinto.

Pairs of projections and commuting isometries

It is known that the non-zero part of compact defect operators of Berger-Coburn-Lebow pairs (BCL pairs in short) of isometries are diagonal operators of the form \[ \begin{bmatrix} I_1 & & & \\ & D & & \\ & & - I_2 & \\ & & & - D \\ \end{bmatrix}, \] where $I_1$ and $I_2$ are the identity operators and $D$ is a positive contractive diagonal operator. We discuss the question of constructing an irreducible BCL pair from a diagonal operator of the above type. The answer to this question is sometimes in the affirmative and sometimes in the negative. This also answers a part of the question raised by He, Qin, and Yang. Our explicit constructions of BCL pairs yield concrete examples of pairs of commuting isometries.

Partially isometric Toeplitz operators on the polydisc

A Toeplitz operator $T_φ$, $φ\in L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^n)$, is a partial isometry if and only if there exist inner functions $φ_1, φ_2 \in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$ such that $φ_1$ and $φ_2$ depends on different variables and $φ= \barφ_1 φ_2$. In particular, for $n=1$, along with new proof, this recovers a classical theorem of Brown and Douglas. \noindent We also prove that a partially isometric Toeplitz operator is hyponormal if and only if the corresponding symbol is an inner function in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$. Moreover, partially isometric Toeplitz operators are always power partial isometry (following Halmos and Wallen), and hence, up to unitary equivalence, a partially isometric Toeplitz operator with symbol in $L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^n)$, $n > 1$, is either a shift, or a co-shift, or a direct sum of truncated shifts. Along the way, we prove that $T_φ$ is a shift whenever $φ$ is inner in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$.

Schur functions and inner functions on the bidisc

We study representations of inner functions on the bidisc from a fractional linear transformation point of view, and provide sufficient conditions, in terms of colligation matrices, for the existence of two-variable inner functions. Here the sufficient conditions are not necessary in general, and we prove a weak converse for rational inner functions that admit one variable factorization. We present a complete classification of de Branges-Rovnyak kernels on the bidisc (which equally works in the setting of polydisc and the open unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$, $n \geq 1$). We also classify, in terms of Agler kernels, two-variable Schur functions that admit one variable factor.

Tridiagonal shifts as compact + isometry

Let $\{a_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ and $\{b_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ be sequences of scalars. Suppose $a_n \neq 0$ for all $n \geq 0$. We consider the tridiagonal kernel (also known as band kernel with bandwidth one) as \[ k(z, w) = \sum_{n=0}^\infty ((a_n + b_n z)z^n) \overline{(({a}_n + {b}_n {w}) {w}^n)} \qquad (z, w \in \mathbb{D}), \] where $\mathbb{D} = \{z \in \mathbb{C}: |z| < 1\}$. Denote by $M_z$ the multiplication operator on the reproducing kernel Hilbert space corresponding to the kernel $k$. Assume that $M_z$ is left-invertible. We prove that $M_z =$ compact $+$ isometry if and only if $|\frac{b_n}{a_n}-\frac{b_{n+1}}{a_{n+1}}|\rightarrow 0$ and $|\frac{a_n}{a_{n+1}}| \rightarrow 1$.

Factorizations of Schur functions

The Schur class, denoted by $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$, is the set of all functions analytic and bounded by one in modulus in the open unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$, that is \[ \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D}) = \{φ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}): \|φ\|_{\infty} := \sup_{z \in \mathbb{D}} |φ(z)| \leq 1\}. \] The elements of $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$ are called Schur functions. A classical result going back to I. Schur states: A function $φ: \mathbb{D} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ is in $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$ if and only if there exist a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and an isometry (known as colligation operator matrix or scattering operator matrix) \[ V = \begin{bmatrix} a & B \\ C & D \end{bmatrix} : \mathbb{C} \oplus \mathcal{H} \rightarrow \mathbb{C} \oplus \mathcal{H}, \] such that $φ$ admits a transfer function realization corresponding to $V$, that is \[ φ(z) = a + z B (I_{\mathcal{H}} - z D)^{-1} C \quad \quad (z \in \mathbb{D}). \] An analogous statement holds true for Schur functions on the bidisc. On the other hand, Schur-Agler class functions on the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$ is a well-known "analogue" of Schur functions on $\mathbb{D}$. In this paper, we present algorithms to factorize Schur functions and Schur-Agler class functions in terms of colligation matrices. More precisely, we isolate checkable conditions on colligation matrices that ensure the existence of Schur (Schur-Agler class) factors of a Schur (Schur-Agler class) function and vice versa.

Beurling type invariant subspaces of composition operators

Let $\mathbb{D}$ be the open unit disk in $\mathbb{C}$, let $H^2$ denote the Hardy space on $\mathbb{D}$ and let $φ: \mathbb{D} \rightarrow \mathbb{D}$ be a holomorphic self map of $\mathbb{D}$. The composition operator $C_φ$ on $H^2$ is defined by \[ (C_φ f)(z)=f(φ(z)) \quad \quad (f \in H^2,\, z \in \mathbb{D}). \] Denote by $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$ the set of all functions that are holomorphic and bounded by one in modulus on $\mathbb{D}$, that is \[ \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D}) = \{ψ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}): \|ψ\|_{\infty} := \sup_{z \in \mathbb{D}} |ψ(z)| \leq 1\}. \] The elements of $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$ are called Schur functions. The aim of this paper is to answer the following question concerning invariant subspaces of composition operators: Characterize $φ$, holomorphic self maps of $\mathbb{D}$, and inner functions $θ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D})$ such that the Beurling type invariant subspace $θH^2$ is an invariant subspace for $C_φ$. We prove the following result: $C_φ (θH^2) \subseteq θH^2$ if and only if \[ \frac{θ\circ φ}θ \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D}). \] This classification also allows us to recover or improve some known results on Beurling type invariant subspaces of composition operators.

Commuting row contractions with polynomial characteristic functions

A characteristic function is a special operator-valued analytic function defined on the open unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$ associated with an $n$-tuple of commuting row contraction on some Hilbert space. In this paper, we continue our study of the representations of $n$-tuples of commuting row contractions on Hilbert spaces, which have polynomial characteristic functions. Gleason's problem plays an important role in the representations of row contractions. We further complement the representations of our row contractions by proving theorems concerning factorizations of characteristic functions. We also emphasize the importance and the role of the noncommutative operator theory and noncommutative varieties to the classification problem of polynomial characteristic functions.

Isometric dilations and von Neumann inequality for finite rank commuting contractions

Motivated by Ball, Li, Timotin and Trent's Schur-Agler class version of commutant lifting theorem, we introduce a class, denoted by $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$, of $n$-tuples of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We always assume that $n \geq 3$. The importance of this class of $n$-tuples stems from the fact that the von Neumann inequality or the existence of isometric dilation does not hold in general for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions on Hilbert spaces (even in the level of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces). Under some rank-finiteness assumptions, we prove that tuples in $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$ always admit explicit isometric dilations and satisfy a refined von Neumann inequality in terms of algebraic varieties in the closure of the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$.

Submodules in polydomains and noncommutative varieties

Tensor product of Fock spaces is analogous to the Hardy space over the unit polydisc. This plays an important role in the development of noncommutative operator theory and function theory in the sense of noncommutative polydomains and noncommutative varieties. In this paper we study joint invariant subspaces of tensor product of full Fock spaces and noncommutative varieties. We also obtain, in particular, by using techniques of noncommutative varieties, a classification of joint invariant subspaces of $n$-fold tensor products of Drury-Arveson spaces.

Analytic Model of Doubly Commuting Contractions

An n-tuple (n \geq 2), T = (T_1, \ldots, T_n), of commuting bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space \mathcal{H} is doubly commuting if T_i T_j^* = T_j^* T_i for all $1 \leq i < j \leq n$. If in addition, each T_i \in C_{\cdot 0}, then we say that T is a doubly commuting pure tuple. In this paper we prove that a doubly commuting pure tuple $T$ can be dilated to a tuple of shift operators on some suitable vector-valued Hardy space H^2_{\mathcal{D}_{T^*}}(\mathbb{D}^n). As a consequence of the dilation theorem, we prove that there exists a closed subspace \mathcal{S}_T of the form \[\mathcal{H}_{T} := \sum_{i=1}^n Φ_{T_i} H^2_{\mathcal{E}_{T_i}}(\mathbb{D}^n),\] where \{\mathcal{E}_{T_i}\}_{i=1}^n are Hilbert spaces, Φ_{T_i} \in H^\infty_{\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{E}_{T_i}, \mathcal{D}_{T^*})}(\mathbb{D}^n) such that each Φ_{T_i} (1 \leq i \leq n) is either a one variable inner function in z_i, or the zero function. Moreover, \mathcal{H} \cong \mathcal{S}_T^\perp and \[(T_1, \ldots, T_n) \cong P_{\mathcal{S}_T^\perp} (M_{z_1}, \ldots, M_{z_n})|_{\mathcal{S}_T^\perp}.\]

Dilations, Wandering Subspaces, and Inner Functions

The objective of this paper is to study wandering subspaces for commuting tuples of bounded operators on Hilbert spaces. It is shown that, for a large class of analytic functional Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}_K$ on the unit ball in $\mathbb C^n$, wandering subspaces for restrictions of the multiplication tuple $M_z = (M_{z_1}, \ldots ,M_{z_n})$ can be described in terms of suitable $\mathcal{H}_K$-inner functions. We prove that $\mathcal{H}_K$-inner functions are contractive multipliers and deduce a result on the multiplier norm of quasi-homogenous polynomials as an application. Along the way we prove a refinement of a result of Arveson on the uniqueness of minimal dilations of pure row contractions.

Factorizations of Characteristic Functions

Let $A = (A_1, \ldots, A_n)$ and $B = (B_1, \ldots, B_n)$ be row contractions on $\mathcal{H}_1$ and $\mathcal{H}_2$, respectively, and $X$ be a row operator from $\oplus_{i=1}^n \mathcal{H}_2$ to $\mathcal{H}_1$. Let $D_{A^*} = (I - A A^*)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ and $D_{B} = (I - B^* B)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ and $Θ_T$ be the characteristic function of $T = \begin{bmatrix} A& D_{A^*}L D_B\\ 0 & B \end{bmatrix}$. Then $Θ_T$ coincides with the product of the characteristic function $Θ_A$ of $A$, the Julia-Halmos matrix corresponding to $L$ and the characteristic function $Θ_B$ of $B$. More precisely, $Θ_T$ coincides with \[ \begin{bmatrix} Θ_B & 0 \\ 0 & I \end{bmatrix} (I_Γ\otimes \begin{bmatrix} L^* & (I - L^* L)^{\frac{1}{2}} \\ (I - L L^*)^{\frac{1}{2}} & - L \end{bmatrix}) \begin{bmatrix} Θ_A & 0\\ 0& I\end{bmatrix}, \] where $Γ$ is the full Fock space. Similar results hold for constrained row contractions.

Operator Positivity and Analytic Models of Commuting Tuples of Operators

We study analytic models of operators of class $C_{\cdot 0}$ with natural positivity assumptions. In particular, we prove that for an $m$-hypercontraction $T \in C_{\cdot 0}$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, there exists a Hilbert space $\mathcal{E}$ and a partially isometric multiplier $θ\in \mathcal{M}(H^2(\mathcal{E}), A^2_m(\mathcal{H}))$ such that \[\mathcal{H} \cong \mathcal{Q}_θ = A^2_m(\mathcal{H}) \ominus θH^2(\mathcal{E}), \quad \quad \mbox{and} \quad \quad T \cong P_{\mathcal{Q}_θ} M_z|_{\mathcal{Q}_θ},\]where $A^2_m$ is the weighted Bergman space and $H^2$ is the Hardy space over the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$. We then proceed to study and develop analytic models for doubly commuting $n$-tuples of operators and investigate their applications to joint shift co-invariant subspaces of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over polydisc. In particular, we completely analyze doubly commuting quotient modules of a large class of reproducing kernel Hilbert modules, in the sense of Arazy and Englis, over the unit polydisc $\mathbb{D}^n$.

An Invariant Subspace Theorem and Invariant Subspaces of Analytic Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces - II

This paper is a follow-up contribution to our work [20] where we discussed some invariant subspace results for contractions on Hilbert spaces. Here we extend the results of [20] to the context of n-tuples of bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces. Let T = (T_1, \ldots, T_n) be a pure commuting co-spherically contractive n-tuple of operators on a Hilbert space \mathcal{H} and \mathcal{S} be a non-trivial closed subspace of \mathcal{H}. One of our main results states that: \mathcal{S} is a joint T-invariant subspace if and only if there exists a partially isometric operator Π\in \mathcal{B}(H^2_n(\mathcal{E}), \mathcal{H})$ such that $\mathcal{S} = ΠH^2_n(\mathcal{E})$, where H^2_n is the Drury-Arveson space and \mathcal{E} is a coefficient Hilbert space and T_i Π= ΠM_{z_i}, i = 1, \ldots, n. In particular, our work addresses the case of joint shift invariant subspaces of the Hardy space and the weighted Bergman spaces over the unit ball in \mathbb{C}^n.

Ando dilations, von Neumann inequality, and distinguished varieties

Let $\mathbb{D}$ denote the unit disc in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$ and let $\mathbb{D}^2 = \mathbb{D} \times \mathbb{D}$ be the unit bidisc in $\mathbb{C}^2$. Let $(T_1, T_2)$ be a pair of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Let $\mbox{dim } \mbox{ran}(I_{\mathcal{H}} - T_j T_j^*) < \infty$, $j = 1, 2$, and let $T_1$ be a pure contraction. Then there exists a variety $V \subseteq \overline{\mathbb{D}}^2$ such that for any polynomial $p \in \mathbb{C}[z_1, z_2]$, the inequality \[ \|p(T_1,T_2)\|_{\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})} \leq \|p\|_V \] holds. If, in addition, $T_2$ is pure, then \[V = \{(z_1, z_2) \in \mathbb{D}^2: \det (Ψ(z_1) - z_2 I_{\mathbb{C}^n}) = 0\}\]is a distinguished variety, where $Ψ$ is a matrix-valued analytic function on $\mathbb{D}$ that is unitary on $\partial \mathbb{D}$. Our results comprise a new proof, as well as a generalization, of Agler and McCarthy's sharper von Neumann inequality for pairs of commuting and strictly contractive matrices.

Inner multipliers and Rudin type invariant subspaces

Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a Hilbert space and $H^2_{\mathcal{E}}(\mathbb{D})$ be the $\mathcal{E}$-valued Hardy space over the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ in $\mathbb{C}$. The well known Beurling-Lax-Halmos theorem states that every shift invariant subspace of $H^2_{\mathcal{E}}(\mathbb{D})$ other than $\{0\}$ has the form $ΘH^2_{\mathcal{E}_*}(\mathbb{D})$, where $Θ$ is an operator-valued inner multiplier in $H^\infty_{B(\mathcal{E}_*, \mathcal{E})}(\mathbb{D})$ for some Hilbert space $\mathcal{E}_*$. In this paper we identify $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ with $H^2(\mathbb{D}^{n-1})$-valued Hardy space $H^2_{H^2(\mathbb{D}^{n-1})}(\mathbb{D})$ and classify all such inner multiplier $Θ\in H^\infty_{\mathcal{B}(H^2(\mathbb{D}^{n-1}))}(\mathbb{D})$ for which $ΘH^2_{H^2(\mathbb{D}^{n-1})}(\mathbb{D})$ is a Rudin type invariant subspace of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$.

An Introduction to Hilbert Module Approach to Multivariable Operator Theory

Let $\{T_1, \ldots, T_n\}$ be a set of $n$ commuting bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Then the $n$-tuple $(T_1, \ldots, T_n)$ turns $\mathcal{H}$ into a module over $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ in the following sense: \[\mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n] \times \mathcal{H} \raro \clh, \quad \quad (p, h) \mapsto p(T_1, \ldots, T_n)h,\]where $p \in \mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ and $h \in \mathcal{H}$. The above module is usually called the Hilbert module over $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$. Hilbert modules over $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ (or natural function algebras) were first introduced by R. G. Douglas and C. Foias in 1976. The two main driving forces were the algebraic and complex geometric views to multivariable operator theory. This article gives an introduction of Hilbert modules over function algebras and surveys some recent developments. Here the theory of Hilbert modules is presented as combination of commutative algebra, complex geometry and the geometry of Hilbert spaces and its applications to the theory of $n$-tuples ($n \geq 1$) of commuting operators. The topics which are studied include: model theory from Hilbert module point of view, Hilbert modules of holomorphic functions, module tensor products, localizations, dilations, submodules and quotient modules, free resolutions, curvature and Fredholm Hilbert modules. More developments in the study of Hilbert module approach to operator theory can be found in a companion paper, "Applications of Hilbert Module Approach to Multivariable Operator Theory".

Applications of Hilbert Module Approach to Multivariable Operator Theory

A commuting $n$-tuple $(T_1, \ldots, T_n)$ of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $\clh$ associate a Hilbert module $\mathcal{H}$ over $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ in the following sense: \[\mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n] \times \mathcal{H} \rightarrow \mathcal{H}, \quad \quad (p, h) \mapsto p(T_1, \ldots, T_n)h,\]where $p \in \mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ and $h \in \mathcal{H}$. A companion survey provides an introduction to the theory of Hilbert modules and some (Hilbert) module point of view to multivariable operator theory. The purpose of this survey is to emphasize algebraic and geometric aspects of Hilbert module approach to operator theory and to survey several applications of the theory of Hilbert modules in multivariable operator theory. The topics which are studied include: generalized canonical models and Cowen-Douglas class, dilations and factorization of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, a class of simple submodules and quotient modules of the Hardy modules over polydisc, commutant lifting theorem, similarity and free Hilbert modules, left invertible multipliers, inner resolutions, essentially normal Hilbert modules, localizations of free resolutions and rigidity phenomenon. This article is a companion paper to "An Introduction to Hilbert Module Approach to Multivariable Operator Theory".

Cross commutators of Rudin's submodules

Let $b(z) = \prod_{n=1}^\infty \frac{-\barα_n}{|α_n|} \frac{z - α_n}{1 - \barα_n z}$, where $\sum_{n=1}^\infty (1 - |α_n|) <\infty$, be the Blaschke product with zeros at $α_n \in \mathbb{D} \setminus \{0\}$. Then $\cls = \vee_{n=1}^\infty \big(z^n H^2(\mathbb{D})\big) \otimes \big(\prod_{k=n}^\infty \frac{-\barα_n}{|α_n|} \frac{z - α_n}{1 - \barα_n z} H^2(\mathbb{D})\big)$ is a joint $(M_{z_1}, M_{z_2})$ invariant subspace of the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D}^2) \cong H^2(\mathbb{D}) \otimes H^2(\mathbb{D})$. This class of subspaces was originally introduced by Rudin in the context of infinite cardinality of generating sets of shift invariant subspaces of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^2)$. \noindent In this paper we prove that for a Rudin invariant subspace $\cls$ of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^2)$, the cross commutator $[(P_{\cls} M_{z_1}|_{\cls})^*, M_{z_2}|_{\cls}] = (P_{\cls} M_{z_1} |_{\cls})^* (M_{z_2}|_{\cls}) - (M_{z_2}|_{\cls}) (P_{\cls} M_{z_1}|_{\cls})^*$ is not compact. Consequently, Rudin's invariant subspaces are both infinitely generated and not essentially doubly commuting.

Operator Theory on Symmetrized Bidisc

A commuting pair of operators (S, P) on a Hilbert space H is said to be a Gamma-contraction if the symmetrized bidisc is a spectral set of the tuple (S, P). In this paper we develop some operator theory inspired by Agler and Young's results on a model theory for Gamma-contractions. We prove a Beurling-Lax-Halmos type theorem for Gamma-isometries. Along the way we solve a problem in the classical one-variable operator theory. We use a "pull back" technique to prove that a completely non-unitary Gamma-contraction (S, P) can be dilated to a direct sum of a Gamma-isometry and a Gamma-unitary on the Sz.-Nagy and Foias functional model of P, and that (S, P) can be realized as a compression of the above pair in the functional model of P. Moreover, we show that the representation is unique. We prove that a commuting tuple (S, P) with |S| \leq 2 and |P \leq 1 is a Gamma-contraction if and only if there exists a compressed scalar operator X with the decompressed numerical radius not greater than one such that S = X + P X^*. In the commutant lifting set up, we obtain a unique and explicit solution to the lifting of S where (S, P) is a completely non-unitary Gamma-contraction. Our results concerning the Beurling-Lax-Halmos theorem of Gamma-isometries and the functional model of Gamma-contractions answers a pair of questions of J. Agler and N. J. Young.

In this paper we analyze the class of Rudin submodules and prove that \[ \text{dim} (\mathcal{S}_Φ\ominus (z_1 \mathcal{S}_Φ+ z_2\mathcal{S}_Φ))= 1+\#\{n\ge 0: α_n=0\}<\infty. \]In particular, this answer a question earlier raised by Douglas and Yang (2000).

We develop a several variables analog of the Jordan blocks of the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D})$. In this consideration, we obtain a complete characterization of the doubly commuting quotient modules of the Hardy module $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$. We prove that a quotient module $\clq$ of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ ($n \geq 2$) is doubly commuting if and only if \[\clq = \clq_{Θ_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \clq_{Θ_n},\]where each $\clq_{Θ_i}$ is either a one variable Jordan block $H^2(\mathbb{D})/Θ_i H^2(\mathbb{D})$ for some inner function $Θ_i$ or the Hardy module $H^2(\mathbb{D})$ on the unit disk for all $i = 1, \ldots, n$. We say that a submodule $\cls$ of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is a co-doubly commuting if the quotient module $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)/\cls$ is doubly commuting. We obtain a Beurling like theorem for the class of co-doubly commuting submodules of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$. We prove that a submodule $\cls$ of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is co-doubly commuting if and only if \[\cls = \mathop{\sum}_{i=1}^m Θ_i H^2(\mathbb{D}^n),\]for some integer $m \leq n$ and one variable inner functions $\{Θ_i\}_{i=1}^m$.

Maximal contractive tuples

Maximality of a contractive tuple of operators is considered. Characterization of a contractive tuple to be maximal is obtained. Notion of maximality of a submodule of Drury-Arveson module on the $d$-dimensional unit ball $\mathbb{B}_d$ is defined. For $d=1$, it is shown that every submodule of the Hardy module over the unit disc is maximal. But for $d\ge 2$ we prove that any homogeneous submodule or submodule generated by polynomials is not maximal. A characterization of a submodule to be maximal is obtained.

Submodules of the Hardy module over polydisc

We say that a submodule $\cls$ of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ ($n >1$) is co-doubly commuting if the quotient module $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)/\cls$ is doubly commuting. We show that a co-doubly commuting submodule of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is essentially doubly commuting if and only if the corresponding one variable inner functions are finite Blaschke products or that $n = 2$. In particular, a co-doubly commuting submodule $\cls$ of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is essentially doubly commuting if and only if $n = 2$ or that $\cls$ is of finite co-dimension. We obtain an explicit representation of the Beurling-Lax-Halmos inner functions for those submodules of $H^2_{H^2(\mathbb{D}^{n-1})}(\mathbb{D})$ which are co-doubly commuting submodules of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$. Finally, we prove that a pair of co-doubly commuting submodules of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ are unitarily equivalent if and only if they are equal.

Tensor product of quotient Hilbert modules

In this paper, we present a unified approach to problems of tensor product of quotient modules of Hilbert modules over $\mathbb{C}[z]$ and corresponding submodules of reproducing kernel Hilbert modules over $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ and the doubly commutativity property of module multiplication operators by the coordinate functions. More precisely, for a reproducing kernel Hilbert module $\clh$ over $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ of analytic functions on the polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$ which satisfies certain conditions, we characterize the quotient modules $\q$ of $\clh$ such that $\q$ is of the form $\q_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes \q_n$, for some one variable quotient modules $\{\q_1, \ldots, \q_n\}$. For $\clh$ the Hardy module over polydisc $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$, this reduces to some recent results by Izuchi, Nakazi and Seto and the third author. This is used to obtain a classification of co-doubly commuting submodules for a class of reproducing kernel Hilbert modules over the unit polydisc. These results are applied to compute the cross commutators of co-doubly commuting submodules. This is used to give further insight into the wandering subspaces and ranks of submodules of the Hardy module case. Our results includes the case of weighted Bergman modules over the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$.

Wandering subspaces of the Bergman space and the Dirichlet space over polydisc

Doubly commutativity of invariant subspaces of the Bergman space and the Dirichlet space over the unit polydisc $\mathbb{D}^n$ (with $ n \geq 2$) is investigated. We show that for any non-empty subset $α=\{α_1,\dots,α_k\}$ of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ and doubly commuting invariant subspace $\s$ of the Bergman space or the Dirichlet space over $\D^n$, the tuple consists of restrictions of co-ordinate multiplication operators $M_α|_\s:=(M_{z_{α_1}}|_\s,\dots, M_{z_{α_k}}|_\s)$ always possesses wandering subspace of the form \[\bigcap_{i=1}^k(\s\ominus z_{α_i}\s). \]

Curvature invariant and generalized canonical Operator models - I

One can view contraction operators given by a canonical model of Sz.-Nagy and Foias as being defined by a quotient module where the basic building blocks are Hardy spaces. In this note we generalize this framework to allow the Bergman and weighted Bergman spaces as building blocks, but restricting attention to the case in which the operator obtained is in the Cowen-Douglas class and requiring the multiplicity to be one. We view the classification of such operators in the context of complex geometry and obtain a complete classification up to unitary equivalence of them in terms of their associated vector bundles and their curvatures.

Contractions with Polynomial characteristic functions I. Geometric approach

In this note we study the completely non unitary contractions on separable complex Hilbert spaces which have polynomial characteristic functions. These operators are precisely those which admit a matrix representation of the form T = S & * & * 0 & N & * 0& 0& C, where $S$ and C^* are unilateral shifts of arbitrary multiplicities and $N$ is nilpotent. We prove that dimension of ker S^* and dimension of ker C are unitary invariants of $T$ and that N, up to a quasi-similarity is uniquely determined by T. Also, we give a complete classification of the subclass of those contractions for which their characteristic functions are monomials.

Contractive Hilbert modules and their dilations

In this note, we show that a quasi-free Hilbert module R defined over the polydisk algebra with kernel function k(z, w) admits a unique minimal dilation (actually an isometric co-extension) to the Hardy module over the polydisk if and only if S^{-1}(z, w) k(z, w) is a positive kernel function, where S(z, w) is the Szegö kernel for the polydisk. Moreover, we establish the equivalence of such a factorization of the kernel function and a positivity condition, defined using the hereditary functional calculus, which was introduced earlier by Athavale \cite{Ath} and Ambrozie, Englis and Müller. An explicit realization of the dilation space is given along with the isometric embedding of the module R in it. The proof works for a wider class of Hilbert modules in which the Hardy module is replaced by more general quasi-free Hilbert modules such as the classical spaces on the polydisk or the unit ball in {C}^m. Some consequences of this more general result are then explored in the case of several natural function algebras.

Resolutions of Hilbert Modules and Similarity

Let H^2_m be the Drury-Arveson (DA) module which is the reproducing kernel Hilbert space with the kernel function (z, w) \in B^m \times B^m \raro (1 - <z,w>)^{-1}. We investigate for which multipliers θ: \mathbb{B}^m \raro \cll(\cle, \cle_*) the quotient module \clh_θ is similar to H^2_m \otimes \clf for some Hilbert space \clf, where M_θ is the corresponding multiplication operator in \cll(H^2_m \otimes \cle, H^2_m \otimes \cle_*) for Hilbert spaces \cle and \cle_* and \clh_θ is the quotient module (H^2_m \otimes \cle_*)/ {clos} [M_θ(H^2_m \otimes \cle)]. We show that a necessary condition is the existence of a multiplier $ψ$ in \clm(\cle_*, \cle) such that θψθ= θ. Moreover, we show that the converse is equivalent to a structure theorem for complemented submodules of H^2_m \otimes \cle for a Hilbert space \cle, which is valid for the case of m=1. The latter result generalizes a known theorem on similarity to the unilateral shift, but the above statement is new. Further, we show that a finite resolution of DA-modules of arbitrary multiplicity using partially isometric module maps must be trivial. Finally, we discuss the analogous questions when the underlying operator tuple or algebra is not necessarily commuting. In this case the converse to the similarity result is always valid.
