$\clw$-hypercontractions and their model

We revisit the study of $ω$-hypercontractions corresponding to a single weight sequence $ω=\{ω_k\}_{k\geq0}$ introduced by Olofsson in \cite{O} and find an analogue of Nagy-Foias characteristic function in this setting. Explicit construction of characteristic functions is obtained and it is shown to be a complete unitary invariant. By considering a multi-weight sequence $\clw$ and $\clw$-hypercontractions we extend Olofsson's work \cite{O} in the multi-variable setting. Model for $\clw$-hypercontractions is obtained by finding their dilations on certain weighted Bergman spaces over the polydisc corresponding to the multi-weight sequence $\clw$. This recovers and provides a different proof of the earlier work of Curto and Vasilescu \cite{CVPoly, CV} for $γ$-contractive multi-operators through a particular choice of multi-weight sequence.

On certain Toeplitz operators and associated completely positive maps

We study Toeplitz operators with respect to a commuting $n$-tuple of bounded operators which satisfies some additional conditions coming from complex geometry. Then we consider a particular such tuple on a function space. The algebra of Toeplitz operators with respect to that particular tuple becomes naturally homeomorphic to $L^\infty$ of a certain compact subset of $\mathbb C^n$. Dual Toeplitz operators are characterized. En route, we prove an extension type theorem which is not only important for studying Toeplitz operators, but also has an independent interest because dilation theorems do not hold in general for $n>2$.

Toeplitz operators and Hilbert modules on the symmetrized polydisc

When is the collection of $\mathsf S$-Toeplitz operators with respect to a tuple of commuting bounded operators $\mathsf S= (S_1, S_2, \ldots , S_{d-1}, P)$, which has the symmetrized polydisc as a spectral set, non-trivial? The answer is in terms of powers of $P$ as well as in terms of a unitary extension. En route, Brown-Halmos relations are investigated. A commutant lifting theorem is established. Finally, we establish a general result connecting the $C^*$-algebra generated by the commutant of $\mathsf S$ and the commutant of its unitary extension $\mathsf R$.

Commutant lifting in several variables

In this article we study commutant lifting, more generally intertwining lifting, for different reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over two domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$, namely the unit ball and the unit polydisc. The reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces we consider are mainly weighted Bergman spaces. Our commutant lifting results are explicit in nature and that is why these results are new even in one variable $(n=1)$ set up.

Isometric dilations and von Neumann inequality for finite rank commuting contractions

Motivated by Ball, Li, Timotin and Trent's Schur-Agler class version of commutant lifting theorem, we introduce a class, denoted by $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$, of $n$-tuples of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We always assume that $n \geq 3$. The importance of this class of $n$-tuples stems from the fact that the von Neumann inequality or the existence of isometric dilation does not hold in general for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions on Hilbert spaces (even in the level of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces). Under some rank-finiteness assumptions, we prove that tuples in $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$ always admit explicit isometric dilations and satisfy a refined von Neumann inequality in terms of algebraic varieties in the closure of the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$.

Isometric dilations of commuting contractions and Brehmer positivity

It is well-known that an $n$-tuple $(n\ge 3)$ of commuting contractions does not posses an isometric dilation, in general. Considering a class of $n$-tuple of commuting contractions satisfying certain positivity assumption, we construct their isometric dilations and consequently establish their von Neumann inequality. The positivity assumption is related to Brehmer positivity and motivated by the study of isometric dilations of operator tuples in [4].

Toeplitz operators on the symmetrized bidisc

The symmetrized bidisc has been a rich field of holomorphic function theory and operator theory. A certain well-known reproducing kernel Hilbert space of holomorphic functions on the symmetrized bidisc resembles the Hardy space of the unit disc in several aspects. This space is known as the Hardy space of the symmetrized bidisc. We introduce the study of those operators on the Hardy space of the symmetrized bidisc that are analogous to Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space of the unit disc. More explicitly, we first study multiplication operators on a bigger space (an $L^2$-space) and then study compressions of these multiplication operators to the Hardy space of the symmetrized bidisc and prove the following major results: (1) Theorem I analyzes the Hardy space of the symmetrized bidisc, not just as a Hilbert space, but as a Hilbert module over the polynomial ring and finds three isomorphic copies of it as $\mathbb D^2$-contractive Hilbert modules. (2) Theorem II provides an algebraic, Brown and Halmos type, characterization of Toeplitz operators. (3)Theorem III gives several characterizations of an analytic Toeplitz operator. (4)Theorem IV characterizes asymptotic Toeplitz operators. (5)Theorem V is a commutant lifting theorem. (6)Theorem VI yields an algebraic characterization of dual Toeplitz operators. Every section from Section 1 to Section 6 contains a theorem each, the main result of that section.

Ando dilations, von Neumann inequality, and distinguished varieties

Let $\mathbb{D}$ denote the unit disc in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$ and let $\mathbb{D}^2 = \mathbb{D} \times \mathbb{D}$ be the unit bidisc in $\mathbb{C}^2$. Let $(T_1, T_2)$ be a pair of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Let $\mbox{dim } \mbox{ran}(I_{\mathcal{H}} - T_j T_j^*) < \infty$, $j = 1, 2$, and let $T_1$ be a pure contraction. Then there exists a variety $V \subseteq \overline{\mathbb{D}}^2$ such that for any polynomial $p \in \mathbb{C}[z_1, z_2]$, the inequality \[ \|p(T_1,T_2)\|_{\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})} \leq \|p\|_V \] holds. If, in addition, $T_2$ is pure, then \[V = \{(z_1, z_2) \in \mathbb{D}^2: \det (Ψ(z_1) - z_2 I_{\mathbb{C}^n}) = 0\}\]is a distinguished variety, where $Ψ$ is a matrix-valued analytic function on $\mathbb{D}$ that is unitary on $\partial \mathbb{D}$. Our results comprise a new proof, as well as a generalization, of Agler and McCarthy's sharper von Neumann inequality for pairs of commuting and strictly contractive matrices.

Inner multipliers and Rudin type invariant subspaces

Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a Hilbert space and $H^2_{\mathcal{E}}(\mathbb{D})$ be the $\mathcal{E}$-valued Hardy space over the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ in $\mathbb{C}$. The well known Beurling-Lax-Halmos theorem states that every shift invariant subspace of $H^2_{\mathcal{E}}(\mathbb{D})$ other than $\{0\}$ has the form $ΘH^2_{\mathcal{E}_*}(\mathbb{D})$, where $Θ$ is an operator-valued inner multiplier in $H^\infty_{B(\mathcal{E}_*, \mathcal{E})}(\mathbb{D})$ for some Hilbert space $\mathcal{E}_*$. In this paper we identify $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ with $H^2(\mathbb{D}^{n-1})$-valued Hardy space $H^2_{H^2(\mathbb{D}^{n-1})}(\mathbb{D})$ and classify all such inner multiplier $Θ\in H^\infty_{\mathcal{B}(H^2(\mathbb{D}^{n-1}))}(\mathbb{D})$ for which $ΘH^2_{H^2(\mathbb{D}^{n-1})}(\mathbb{D})$ is a Rudin type invariant subspace of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$.

Cross commutators of Rudin's submodules

Let $b(z) = \prod_{n=1}^\infty \frac{-\barα_n}{|α_n|} \frac{z - α_n}{1 - \barα_n z}$, where $\sum_{n=1}^\infty (1 - |α_n|) <\infty$, be the Blaschke product with zeros at $α_n \in \mathbb{D} \setminus \{0\}$. Then $\cls = \vee_{n=1}^\infty \big(z^n H^2(\mathbb{D})\big) \otimes \big(\prod_{k=n}^\infty \frac{-\barα_n}{|α_n|} \frac{z - α_n}{1 - \barα_n z} H^2(\mathbb{D})\big)$ is a joint $(M_{z_1}, M_{z_2})$ invariant subspace of the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D}^2) \cong H^2(\mathbb{D}) \otimes H^2(\mathbb{D})$. This class of subspaces was originally introduced by Rudin in the context of infinite cardinality of generating sets of shift invariant subspaces of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^2)$. \noindent In this paper we prove that for a Rudin invariant subspace $\cls$ of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^2)$, the cross commutator $[(P_{\cls} M_{z_1}|_{\cls})^*, M_{z_2}|_{\cls}] = (P_{\cls} M_{z_1} |_{\cls})^* (M_{z_2}|_{\cls}) - (M_{z_2}|_{\cls}) (P_{\cls} M_{z_1}|_{\cls})^*$ is not compact. Consequently, Rudin's invariant subspaces are both infinitely generated and not essentially doubly commuting.

Star-Generating Vectors of Rudin's Quotient Modules

The purpose of this paper is to study a class of quotient modules of the Hardy module $H^2(D^n)$. Along with the two variables quotient modules introduced by W. Rudin, we introduce and study a large class of quotient modules, namely Rudin's quotient modules of $H^2(D^n)$. By exploiting the structure of minimal representations we obtain an explicit co-rank formula for Rudin's quotient modules.

Maximal contractive tuples

Maximality of a contractive tuple of operators is considered. Characterization of a contractive tuple to be maximal is obtained. Notion of maximality of a submodule of Drury-Arveson module on the $d$-dimensional unit ball $\mathbb{B}_d$ is defined. For $d=1$, it is shown that every submodule of the Hardy module over the unit disc is maximal. But for $d\ge 2$ we prove that any homogeneous submodule or submodule generated by polynomials is not maximal. A characterization of a submodule to be maximal is obtained.

Tensor product of quotient Hilbert modules

In this paper, we present a unified approach to problems of tensor product of quotient modules of Hilbert modules over $\mathbb{C}[z]$ and corresponding submodules of reproducing kernel Hilbert modules over $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ and the doubly commutativity property of module multiplication operators by the coordinate functions. More precisely, for a reproducing kernel Hilbert module $\clh$ over $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \ldots, z_n]$ of analytic functions on the polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$ which satisfies certain conditions, we characterize the quotient modules $\q$ of $\clh$ such that $\q$ is of the form $\q_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes \q_n$, for some one variable quotient modules $\{\q_1, \ldots, \q_n\}$. For $\clh$ the Hardy module over polydisc $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$, this reduces to some recent results by Izuchi, Nakazi and Seto and the third author. This is used to obtain a classification of co-doubly commuting submodules for a class of reproducing kernel Hilbert modules over the unit polydisc. These results are applied to compute the cross commutators of co-doubly commuting submodules. This is used to give further insight into the wandering subspaces and ranks of submodules of the Hardy module case. Our results includes the case of weighted Bergman modules over the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$.

Wandering subspaces of the Bergman space and the Dirichlet space over polydisc

Doubly commutativity of invariant subspaces of the Bergman space and the Dirichlet space over the unit polydisc $\mathbb{D}^n$ (with $ n \geq 2$) is investigated. We show that for any non-empty subset $α=\{α_1,\dots,α_k\}$ of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ and doubly commuting invariant subspace $\s$ of the Bergman space or the Dirichlet space over $\D^n$, the tuple consists of restrictions of co-ordinate multiplication operators $M_α|_\s:=(M_{z_{α_1}}|_\s,\dots, M_{z_{α_k}}|_\s)$ always possesses wandering subspace of the form \[\bigcap_{i=1}^k(\s\ominus z_{α_i}\s). \]
