Asymptotic expansions of Jacobi polynomials and of the nodes and weights of Gauss-Jacobi quadrature for large degree and parameters in terms of elementary functions

Asymptotic approximations of Jacobi polynomials are given in terms of elementary functions for large degree $n$ and parameters $α$ and $β$. From these new results, asymptotic expansions of the zeros are derived and methods are given to obtain the coefficients in the expansions. These approximations can be used as initial values in iterative methods for computing the nodes of Gauss--Jacobi quadrature for large degree and parameters. The performance of the asymptotic approximations for computing the nodes and weights of these Gaussian quadratures is illustrated with numerical examples.

Comments on the paper "Universal bounds and monotonicity properties of ratios of Hermite and Parabolic Cylinder functions"

In the abstract of [1] we read: "We obtain so far unproved properties of a ratio involving a classof Hermite and parabolic cylinder functions." However, we explain how some of the main results in that paper were already proved in [2], namely the `universal bounds'. An error in reference [2] was discussed in [1] which does not affect the proof given there for those `universal bounds'; we fix this erratum easily. We end this note proposing a conjecture regarding the best possible upper bound for a certain ratio of parabolic cylinder functions.

Numerical evaluation of Airy-type integrals arising in uniform asymptotic analysis

We describe a method to evaluate integrals that arise in the asymptotic analysis when two saddle points may be close together. These integrals, which appear in problems from optics, acoustics or quantum mechanics as well as in a wide class of special functions, can be transformed into Airy-type integrals and we use the trapezoidal rule to compute these integrals numerically. The quadrature method, which remains valid when two saddle points coalesce, is illustrated with numerical examples.

Sharp bounds for cumulative distribution functions

Ratios of integrals can be bounded in terms of ratios of integrands under certain monotonicity conditions. This result, related with L'Hôpital's monotone rule, can be used to obtain sharp bounds for cumulative distribution functions. We consider the case of noncentral cumulative gamma and beta distributions. Three different types of sharp bounds for the noncentral gamma distributions (also called Marcum functions) are obtained in terms of modified Bessel functions and one additional type of function: a second modified Bessel function, two error functions or one incomplete gamma function. For the noncentral beta case the bounds are expressed in terms of Kummer functions and one additional Kummer function or an incomplete beta function. These bounds improve previous results with respect to their range of application and/or its sharpness.

The Schwarzian-Newton method for solving nonlinear equations, with applications

The Schwarzian-Newton method can be defined as the minimal method for solving nonlinear equations $f(x)=0$ which is exact for any function $f$ with constant Schwarzian derivative; exactness means that the method gives the exact root in one iteration for any starting value in a neighborhood of the root. This is a fourth order method which has Halley's method as limit when the Schwarzian derivative tends to zero. We obtain conditions for the convergence of the SNM in an interval and show how this method can be applied for a reliable and fast solution of some problems, like the inversion of cumulative distribution functions (gamma and beta distributions) and the inversion of elliptic integrals.

An improved algorithm and a Fortran 90 module for computing the conical function $P^m_{-1/2+iτ}(x)$

In this paper we describe an algorithm and a Fortran 90 module ({\bf Conical}) for the computation of the conical function $P^m_{-\tfrac12+iτ}(x)$ for $x>-1$, $m \ge 0$, $τ>0$. These functions appear in the solution of Dirichlet problems for domains bounded by cones; because of this, they are involved in a large number of applications in Engineering and Physics. In the Fortran 90 module, the admissible parameter ranges for computing the conical functions in standard IEEE double precision arithmetic are restricted to $(x,m,τ) \in (-1,1) \times [0,\,40] \times [0,\,100]$ and $(x,m,τ) \in (1,100) \times [0,\,100] \times [0,\,100]$. Based on tests of the three-term recurrence relation satisfied by these functions and direct comparison with Maple, we claim a relative accuracy close to $10^{-12}$ in the full parameter range, although a mild loss of accuracy can be found at some points of the oscillatory region of the conical functions. The relative accuracy increases to $10^{-13}\,-\,10^{-14}$ in the region of the monotonic regime of the functions where integral representations are computed ($-1<x<0$).

Efficient and accurate algorithms for the computation and inversion of the incomplete gamma function ratios

Algorithms for the numerical evaluation of the incomplete gamma function ratios $P(a,x)=γ(a,x)/Γ(a)$ and $Q(a,x)=Γ(a,x)/Γ(a)$ are described for positive values of $a$ and $x$. Also, inversion methods are given for solving the equations $P(a,x)=p$, $Q(a,x)=q$, with $0<p,q<1$. Both the direct computation and the inversion of the incomplete gamma function ratios are used in many problems in statistics and applied probability. The analytical approach from earlier literature is summarized and new initial estimates are derived for starting the inversion algorithms. The performance of the associated software to our algorithms (the Fortran 90 module {\bf IncgamFI}) is analyzed and compared with earlier published algorithms.

Remarks on the paper: "Bounds for functions involving ratios of modified Bessel functions"

A recent paper by C.G. Kokologiannaki published in J. Math. Anal. Appl. \cite{Kolo:2012:BFI} gives some properties for ratios of modified Bessel functions and, in particular, some bounds. These bounds are said to improve the range of some inequalities in \cite{Segura:2011:BRM} or to be sharper. Unfortunately, Kokologiannaki made some mistakes in the comparison and no improvement or extension is made over the results in \cite{Segura:2011:BRM}. We explain the errors in these comments and show that the bounds given in \cite{Kolo:2012:BFI} are already contained in \cite{Segura:2011:BRM}.

On bounds for solutions of monotonic first order difference-differential systems

Many special functions are solutions of first order linear systems $y_n'(x)=a_n(x)y_n(x)+d_n(x)y_{n-1}(x)$, $y_{n-1}'(x)=b_n(x)y_{n-1}(x)+e_{n}(x)y_n(x)$. We obtain bounds for the ratios $y_n(x)/y_{n-1}(x)$ and the logarithmic derivatives of $y_n(x)$ for solutions of monotonic systems satisfying certain initial conditions. For the case $d_n(x)e_n(x)>0$, sequences of upper and lower bounds can be obtained by iterating the recurrence relation; for minimal solutions of the recurrence these are convergent sequences. The bounds are related to the Liouville-Green approximation for the associated second order ODEs as well as to the asymptotic behavior of the associated three-term recurrence relation as $n\rightarrow +\infty$; the bounds are sharp both as a function of $n$ and $x$. Many special functions are amenable to this analysis, and we give several examples of application: modified Bessel functions, parabolic cylinder functions, Legendre functions of imaginary variable and Laguerre functions. New Turán-type inequalities are established from the function ratio bounds. Bounds for monotonic systems with $d_n(x)e_n(x)<0$ are also given, in particular for Hermite and Laguerre polynomials of real positive variable; in that case the bounds can be used for bounding the monotonic region (and then the extreme zeros).

The ABC of Hyper Recursions

Each family of Gauss hypergeometric functions $$ f_n={}_2F_1(a+ε_1n, b+ε_2n ;c+ε_3n; z), $$ for fixed $ε_j=0,\pm1$ (not all $ε_j$ equal to zero) satisfies a second order linear difference equation of the form $$ A_nf_{n-1}+B_nf_n+C_nf_{n+1}=0. $$ Because of symmetry relations and functional relations for the Gauss functions, many of the 26 cases (for different $ε_j$ values) can be transformed into each other. We give a set of basic equations from which all other equations can be obtained. For each basic equation, we study the existence of minimal solutions and the character of $f_n$ (minimal or dominant) as $n\to \pm\infty$. A second independent solution is given in each basic case which is dominant when $f_n$ is minimal and vice-versa. In this way, satisfactory pairs of linearly independent solutions for each of the 26 second order linear difference equations can be obtained.
