Crossing limit cycles of planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems formed by isochronous centers

These last years an increasing interest appeared for studying the planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems motivated by the rich applications in modelling real phenomena. One of the difficulties for understanding the dynamics of these systems is the study their limit cycles. In this paper we study the maximum number of crossing limit cycles of some classes of planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems separated by a straight line, and formed by combinations of linear centers (consequently isochronous) and cubic isochronous centers with homogeneous nonlinearities. For these classes of planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems we solved the extension of the 16th Hilbert problem, i.e. we provide an upper bound for their maximum number of crossing limit cycles.

On the equilateral pentagonal central configurations

An equilateral pentagon is a polygon in the plane with five sides of equal length. In this paper we classify the central configurations of the $5$-body problem having the five bodies at the vertices of an equilateral pentagon with an axis of symmetry. We prove that there are two unique classes of such equilateral pentagons providing central configurations, one concave equilateral pentagon and one convex equilateral pentagon, the regular one. A key point of our proof is the use of rational parameterizations to transform the corresponding equations, which involve square roots, into polynomial equations.

Generalized Liénard systems, singularly perturbed systems, Flow Curvature Method

In his famous book entitled \textit{Theory of Oscillations}, Nicolas Minorsky wrote: "\textit{each time the system absorbs energy the curvature of its trajectory decreases} and \textit{vice versa}". According to the \textit{Flow Curvature Method}, the location of the points where the \textit{curvature of trajectory curve}, integral of such planar \textit{singularly dynamical systems}, vanishes directly provides a first order approximation in $\varepsilon$ of its \textit{slow invariant manifold} equation. By using this method, we prove that, in the $\varepsilon$-vicinity of the \textit{slow invariant manifold} of generalized Liénard systems, the \textit{curvature of trajectory curve} increases while the \textit{energy} of such systems decreases. Hence, we prove Minorsky's statement for the generalized Liénard systems. Then, we establish a relationship between \textit{curvature} and \textit{energy} for such systems. These results are then exemplified with the classical Van der Pol and generalized Liénard \textit{singularly perturbed systems}.

Periods of Morse--Smale diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb{S}^n$, $\mathbb{S}^m \times \mathbb{S}^n$, $\mathbb{C}P^n}$ and $\mathbb{H}P^n}$

We study the set of periods of the Morse--Smale diffeomorphisms on the $n$-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$, on products of two spheres of arbitrary dimension $\mathbb{S}^m \times \mathbb{S}^n$ with $m \neq n$, on the $n$-dimensional complex projective space $\mathbb{C}\text{\textbf{P}}^n}$ and on the $n$-dimensional quaternion projective space $\mathbb{H}\text{\textbf{P}}^n}$. We classify the minimal sets of Lefschetz periods for such Morse--Smale diffeomorphisms. This characterization is done using the induced maps on the homology. The main tool used is the Lefschetz zeta function.

Bifurcations from families of periodic solutions in piecewise differential systems

Consider a differential system of the form $$ x'=F_0(t,x)+\sum_{i=1}^k \varepsilon^i F_i(t,x)+\varepsilon^{k+1} R(t,x,\varepsilon), $$ where $F_i:\mathbb{S}^1 \times D \to \mathbb{R}^m$ and $R:\mathbb{S}^1 \times D \times (-\varepsilon_0,\varepsilon_0) \to \mathbb{R}^m$ are piecewise $C^{k+1}$ functions and $T$-periodic in the variable $t$. Assuming that the unperturbed system $x'=F_0(t,x)$ has a $d$-dimensional submanifold of periodic solutions with $d<m$, we use the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction and the averaging theory to study the existence of isolated $T$-periodic solutions of the above differential system.

On the periodic solutions of discontinuous piecewise differential systems

Motivated by problems coming from different areas of the applied science we study the periodic solutions of the following differential system $$x'(t)=F_0(t,x)+\varepsilon F_1(t,x)+\varepsilon^2 R(t,x,\varepsilon),$$ when $F_0$, $F_1$, and $R$ are discontinuous piecewise functions, and $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter. It is assumed that the manifold $\mathbb{Z}$ of all periodic solutions of the unperturbed system $x'=F_0(t,x)$ has dimension $n$ or smaller then $n$. The averaging theory is one of the best tools to attack this problem. This theory is completely developed when $F_0$, $F_1$ and $R$ are continuous functions, and also when $F_0=0$ for a class of discontinuous differential systems. Nevertheless does not exist the averaging theory for studying the periodic solutions of discontinuous differential system when $F_0\neq0$. In this paper we develop this theory for a big class of discontinuous differential systems.

Canards from Chua's circuit

The aim of this work is to extend Benoît's theorem for the generic existence of "canards" solutions in singularly perturbed dynamical systems of dimension three with one fast variable to those of dimension four. Then, it is established that this result can be found according to the Flow Curvature Method. Applications to Chua's cubic model of dimension three and four enable to state the existence of "canards" solutions in such systems.

Generalized rational first integrals of analytic differential systems

In this paper we mainly study the necessary conditions for the existence of functionally independent generalized rational first integrals of ordinary differential systems via the resonances. The main results extend some of the previous related ones, for instance the classical Poincaré's one \cite{Po}, the Furta's one, part of Chen's ones, and the Shi's one. The key point in the proof of our main results is that functionally independence of generalized rational functions implies the functionally independence of their lowest order rational homogeneous terms.

On the birth of limit cycles for non-smooth dynamical systems

The main objective of this work is to develop, via Brower degree theory and regularization theory, a variation of the classical averaging method for detecting limit cycles of certain piecewise continuous dynamical systems. In fact, overall results are presented to ensure the existence of limit cycles of such systems. These results may represent new insights in averaging, in particular its relation with non smooth dynamical systems theory. An application is presented in careful detail.

On the number of limit cycles in discontinuous piecewise linear differential systems with two pieces separated by a straight line

In this paper we study the maximum number $N$ of limit cycles that can exhibit a planar piecewise linear differential system formed by two pieces separated by a straight line. More precisely, we prove that this maximum number satisfies $2\leq N \leq 3$ if one of the two linear differential systems has its equilibrium point on the straight line of discontinuity.

Periodic Solutions of the extended Duffing-Van der Pol Oscillator

In this paper some aspects on the periodic solutions of the extended Duffing-Van der Pol oscillator are discussed. Doing different rescaling of the variables and parameters of the system associated to the extended Duffing-Van der Pol oscillator we show that it can bifurcate one or three periodic solutions from a 2-dimensional manifold filled by periodic solutions of the referred system. For each rescaling we exhibit concrete values for which these bounds are reached. Beyond that we characterize the stability of some periodic solutions. Our approach is analytical and the results are obtained using averaging theory and some algebraic techniques.

Zero-Hopf bifurcation in a Chua system

A zero-Hopf equilibrium is an isolated equilibrium point whose eigenvalues are $\pm ωi\neq 0$ and $0$. In general for a such equilibrium there is no theory for knowing when from it bifurcates some small-amplitude limit cycle moving the parameters of the system. Here we study the zero-Hopf bifurcation using the averaging theory. We apply this theory to a Chua system depending on $6$ parameters, but the way followed for studying the zero-Hopf bifurcation can be applied to any other differential system in dimension $3$ or higher. In this paper first we show that there are three $4$-parameter families of Chua systems exhibiting a zero-Hopf equilibrium. After, by using the averaging theory, we provide sufficient conditions for the bifurcation of limit cycles from these families of zero-Hopf equilibria. From one family we can prove that $1$ limit cycle bifurcate, and from the other two families we can prove that $1$, $2$ or $3$ limit cycles bifurcate simultaneously.

Zero-Hopf bifurcation in the FitzHugh-Nagumo system

We characterize the values of the parameters for which a zero--Hopf equilibrium point takes place at the singular points, namely, $O$ (the origin), $P_+$ and $P_-$ in the FitzHugh-Nagumo system. Thus we find two $2$--parameter families of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system for which the equilibrium point at the origin is a zero-Hopf equilibrium. For these two families we prove the existence of a periodic orbit bifurcating from the zero--Hopf equilibrium point $O$. We prove that exist three $2$--parameter families of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system for which the equilibrium point at $P_+$ and $P_-$ is a zero-Hopf equilibrium point. For one of these families we prove the existence of $1$, or $2$, or $3$ periodic orbits borning at $P_+$ and $P_-$.

A Note on the First Integrals of Vector Fields with Integrating Factors and Normalizers

We prove a sufficient condition for the existence of explicit first integrals for vector fields which admit an integrating factor. This theorem recovers and extends previous results in the literature on the integrability of vector fields which are volume preserving and possess nontrivial normalizers. Our approach is geometric and coordinate-free and hence it works on any smooth orientable manifold.
