Hook-valued tableau uncrowding and tableau switching

Refined canonical stable Grothendieck polynomials were introduced by Hwang, Jang, Kim, Song, and Song. There exist two combinatorial models for these polynomials: one using hook-valued tableaux and the other using pairs of a semistandard Young tableau and (what we call) an exquisite tableau. An uncrowding algorithm on hook-valued tableaux was introduced by Pan, Pappe, Poh, and Schilling. In this paper, we discover a novel connection between the two models via the uncrowding and Goulden--Greene's jeu de taquin algorithms, using a classical result of Benkart, Sottile, and Stroomer on tableau switching. This connection reveals a symmetry of the uncrowding algorithm defined on hook-valued tableaux. As a corollary, we obtain another combinatorial model for the refined canonical stable Grothendieck polynomials in terms of biflagged tableaux, which naturally appear in the characterization of the image of the uncrowding map.

Characteristic polynomials of the weak order on classical and affine Coxeter groups

We find a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of the permutations with a fixed descent set under the weak order. As a corollary we obtain a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of alternating permutations. We generalize these results to Coxeter groups. We also find a formula for the generating function for the characteristic polynomials of classical Coxeter groups, which is then related to affine Coxeter groups.

Jacobi--Trudi formula for refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials

In 2007 Lam and Pylyavskyy found a combinatorial formula for the dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, which are the dual basis of the stable Grothendieck polynomials with respect to the Hall inner product. In 2016 Galashin, Grinberg, and Liu introduced refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials by putting additional sequence of parameters in the combinatorial formula of Lam and Pylyavskyy. Grinberg conjectured a Jacobi--Trudi type formula for refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials. In this paper this conjecture is proved by using bijections of Lam and Pylyavskyy.

Enumeration of Gelfand-Cetlin type reduced words

The combinatorics of reduced words and commutation classes plays an important role in geometric representation theory. A string polytope is a lattice polytope associated to each reduced word of the longest element $w_0$ in the symmetric group which encodes the character of a certain irreducible representation of a Lie group of type $A$. In this paper, we provide a recursive formula for the number of reduced words of $w_0$ such that the corresponding string polytopes are combinatorially equivalent to a Gelfand-Cetlin polytope. The recursive formula involves the number of standard Young tableaux of shifted shape. We also show that each commutation class is completely determined by a list of quantities called indices.

Enumeration of standard barely set-valued tableaux of shifted shapes

A standard barely set-valued tableau of shape $λ$ is a filling of the Young diagram $λ$ with integers $1,2,\dots,|λ|+1$ such that the integers are increasing in each row and column, and every cell contains one integer except one cell that contains two integers. Counting standard barely set-valued tableaux is closely related to the coincidental down-degree expectations (CDE) of lower intervals in Young's lattice. Using $q$-integral techniques we give a formula for the number of standard barely set-valued tableaux of arbitrary shifted shape. We show how it can be used to recover two formulas, originally conjectured by Reiner, Tenner and Yong, and proved by Hopkins, for numbers of standard barely set valued tableaux of particular shifted-balanced shapes. We also prove a conjecture of Reiner, Tenner and Yong on the CDE property of the shifted shape $(n,n-2,n-4,\dots,n-2k+2)$. Finally, in the Appendix we raise a conjecture on an $\mathsf a;q$-analogue of the down-degree expectation with respect to the uniform distribution for a specific class of lower order ideals of Young's lattice.

Jacobi--Trudi formulas for flagged refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials

Recently Galashin, Grinberg, and Liu introduced the refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, which are symmetric functions in $x=(x_1,x_2,\dots)$ with additional parameters $t=(t_1,t_2,\dots)$. The refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are defined as a generating function for reverse plane partitions of a given shape. They interpolate between Schur functions and dual stable Grothendieck polynomials introduced by Lam and Pylyavskyy in 2007. Flagged refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are a more refined version of refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, where lower and upper bounds are given for the entries of each row or column. In this paper Jacobi--Trudi-type formulas for flagged refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are proved using plethystic substitution. This resolves a conjecture of Grinberg and generalizes a result by Iwao and Amanov--Yeliussizov.

Lecture hall tableaux

We introduce lecture hall tableaux, which are fillings of a skew Young diagram satisfying certain conditions. Lecture hall tableaux generalize both lecture hall partitions and anti-lecture hall compositions, and also contain reverse semistandard Young tableaux as a limit case. We show that the coefficients in the Schur expansion of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials are generating functions for lecture hall tableaux. Using a Selberg-type integral we show that moments of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials, which are equal to generating functions for lecture hall tableaux of a Young diagram, have a product formula. We also explore various combinatorial properties of lecture hall tableaux.

On linearization coefficients of $q$-Laguerre polynomials

The linearization coefficient $\mathcal{L}(L_{n_1}(x)\dots L_{n_k}(x))$ of classical Laguerre polynomials $L_n(x)$ is known to be equal to the number of $(n_1,\dots,n_k)$-derangements, which are permutations with a certain condition. Kasraoui, Stanton and Zeng found a $q$-analog of this result using $q$-Laguerre polynomials with two parameters $q$ and $y$. Their formula expresses the linearization coefficient of $q$-Laguerre polynomials as the generating function for $(n_1,\dots,n_k)$-derangements with two statistics counting weak excedances and crossings. In this paper their result is proved by constructing a sign-reversing involution on marked perfect matchings.

Flow polytopes with Catalan volumes

The Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope can be thought of as the flow polytope of the complete graph with netflow vector $(1, 0, \ldots, 0, -1)$. The normalized volume of the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope equals the product of consecutive Catalan numbers, yet there is no combinatorial proof of this fact. We consider a natural generalization of this polytope, namely, the flow polytope of the complete graph with netflow vector $(1,1, 0, \ldots, 0, -2)$. We show that the volume of this polytope is a certain power of $2$ times the product of consecutive Catalan numbers. Our proof uses constant term identities and further deepens the combinatorial mystery of why these numbers appear. In addition we introduce two more families of flow polytopes whose volumes are given by product formulas.

On q-integrals over order polytopes

A combinatorial study of multiple $q$-integrals is developed. This includes a $q$-volume of a convex polytope, which depends upon the order of $q$-integration. A multiple $q$-integral over an order polytope of a poset is interpreted as a generating function of linear extensions of the poset. Specific modifications of posets are shown to give predictable changes in $q$-integrals over their respective order polytopes. This method is used to combinatorially evaluate some generalized $q$-beta integrals. One such application is a combinatorial interpretation of a $q$-Selberg integral. New generating functions for generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and reverse plane partitions are established. A $q$-analogue to a well known result in Ehrhart theory is generalized using $q$-volumes and $q$-Ehrhart polynomials.

On the f-vectors of Gelfand-Cetlin polytopes

A Gelfand-Cetlin polytope is a convex polytope obtained as an image of certain completely integrable system on a partial flag variety. In this paper, we give an equivalent description of the face structure of a GC-polytope in terms of so called the face structure of a ladder diagram. Using our description, we obtain a partial differential equation whose solution is the exponential generating function of f-vectors of GC-polytopes. This solves the open problem (2) posed by Gusev, Kritchenko, and Timorin in [GKT].

A new $q$-Selberg integral, Schur functions, and Young books

Recently, Kim and Oh expressed the Selberg integral in terms of the number of Young books which are a generalization of standard Young tableaux of shifted staircase shape. In this paper the generating function for Young books according to major index statistic is considered. It is shown that this generating function can be written as a Jackson integral which gives a new $q$-Selberg integral. It is also shown that the new $q$-Selberg integral has an expression in terms of Schur functions.

Generalized Dyck tilings

Recently, Kenyon and Wilson introduced Dyck tilings, which are certain tilings of the region between two Dyck paths. The enumeration of Dyck tilings is related with hook formulas for forests and the combinatorics of Hermite polynomials. The first goal of this work is to give an alternative point of view on Dyck tilings by making use of the weak order and the Bruhat order on permutations. Then we introduce two natural generalizations: $k$-Dyck tilings and symmetric Dyck tilings. We are led to consider Stirling permutations, and define an analog of the Bruhat order on them. We show that certain families of $k$-Dyck tilings are in bijection with intervals in this order. We also enumerate symmetric Dyck tilings.

The Selberg integral and Young books

The Selberg integral is an important integral first evaluated by Selberg in 1944. Stanley found a combinatorial interpretation of the Selberg integral in terms of permutations. In this paper, new combinatorial objects "Young books" are introduced and shown to have a connection with the Selberg integral. This connection gives an enumeration formula for Young books. It is shown that special cases of Young books become standard Young tableaux of various shapes: shifted staircases, squares, certain skew shapes, and certain truncated shapes. As a consequence, product formulas for the number of standard Young tableaux of these shapes are obtained.

Dyck tilings, increasing trees, descents, and inversions

Cover-inclusive Dyck tilings are tilings of skew Young diagrams with ribbon tiles shaped like Dyck paths, in which tiles are no larger than the tiles they cover. These tilings arise in the study of certain statistical physics models and also Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials. We give two bijections between cover-inclusive Dyck tilings and linear extensions of tree posets. The first bijection maps the statistic (area + tiles)/2 to inversions of the linear extension, and the second bijection maps the "discrepancy" between the upper and lower boundary of the tiling to descents of the linear extension.

Cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations

We show an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations with given cycle types. We define annular $q$-Kreweras numbers, annular $q$-Narayana numbers, and annular $q$-Catalan number, all of which are polynomials in $q$. We then show that these polynomials exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations. We also show that a sum of annular $q$-Kreweras numbers becomes an annular $q$-Narayana number and a sum of $q$-Narayana numbers becomes an annular $q$-Catalan number.

Enumeration formulas for generalized q-Euler numbers

We find an enumeration formula for a $(t,q)$-Euler number which is a generalization of the $q$-Euler number introduced by Han, Randrianarivony, and Zeng. We also give a combinatorial expression for the $(t,q)$-Euler number and find another formula when $t=\pm q^r$ for any integer $r$. Special cases of our latter formula include the formula of the $q$-Euler number recently found by Josuat-Vergès and Touchard-Riordan's formula.

Proofs of two conjectures of Kenyon and Wilson on Dyck tilings

Recently, Kenyon and Wilson introduced a certain matrix $M$ in order to compute pairing probabilities of what they call the double-dimer model. They showed that the absolute value of each entry of the inverse matrix $M^{-1}$ is equal to the number of certain Dyck tilings of a skew shape. They conjectured two formulas on the sum of the absolute values of the entries in a row or a column of $M^{-1}$. In this paper we prove the two conjectures. As a consequence we obtain that the sum of the absolute values of all entries of $M^{-1}$ is equal to the number of complete matchings. We also find a bijection between Dyck tilings and complete matchings.

Chain enumeration of $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions of classical types

We give combinatorial proofs of the formulas for the number of multichains in the $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions of classical types with certain conditions on the rank and the block size due to Krattenthaler and M{ü}ller. We also prove Armstrong's conjecture on the zeta polynomial of the poset of $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions of type $A$ invariant under a $180^\circ$ rotation in the cyclic representation.

Combinatorics on permutation tableaux of type $A$ and type $B$

We give another bijective proof of a result of Corteel and Nadeau. We find a generating function related to unrestricted columns of permutation tableaux. As a consequence, we obtain a sign-imbalance formula for permutation tableaux. We extend the first bijection of Corteel and Nadeau between permutations and permutation tableaux to type $B$ objects. Using this type $B$ bijection, we generalize a result of Lam and Williams. We prove that the bijection of Corteel and Nadeau and our type $B$ bijection can be expressed as zigzag maps on the alternative representation.

Front representation of set partitions

Let $π$ be a set partition of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$. The standard representation of $π$ is the graph on the vertex set $[n]$ whose edges are the pairs $(i,j)$ of integers with $i<j$ in the same block which does not contain any integer between $i$ and $j$. The front representation of $π$ is the graph on the vertex set $[n]$ whose edges are the pairs $(i,j)$ of integers with $i<j$ in the same block whose smallest integer is $i$. Using the front representation, we find a recurrence relation for the number of $12... k12$-avoiding partitions for $k\geq2$. Similarly, we find a recurrence relation for the number of $k$-distant noncrossing partitions for $k=2,3$. We also prove that the front representation has several joint symmetric distributions for crossings and nestings as the standard representation does.

New interpretations for noncrossing partitions of classical types

We interpret noncrossing partitions of type $B$ and type $D$ in terms of noncrossing partitions of type $A$. As an application, we get type-preserving bijections between noncrossing and nonnesting partitions of type $B$, type $C$ and type $D$ which are different from those in the recent work of Fink and Giraldo. We also define Catalan tableaux of type $B$ and type $D$, and find bijections between them and noncrossing partitions of type $B$ and type $D$ respectively.

A note on 2-distant noncrossing partitions and weighted Motzkin paths

We prove a conjecture of Drake and Kim: the number of $2$-distant noncrossing partitions of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ is equal to the sum of weights of Motzkin paths of length $n$, where the weight of a Motzkin path is a product of certain fractions involving Fibonacci numbers. We provide two proofs of their conjecture: one uses continued fractions and the other is combinatorial.

A note on the total number of cycles of even and odd permutations

We prove bijectively that the total number of cycles of all even permutations of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ and the total number of cycles of all odd permutations of $[n]$ differ by $(-1)^n(n-2)!$, which was stated as an open problem by Miklós Bóna. We also prove bijectively the following more general identity: $$\sum_{i=1}^n c(n,i)\cdot i \cdot (-k)^{i-1} = (-1)^k k! (n-k-1)!,$$ where $c(n,i)$ denotes the number of permutations of $[n]$ with $i$ cycles.

q-analog of tableau containment

We prove a $q$-analog of the following result due to McKay, Morse and Wilf: the probability that a random standard Young tableau of size $n$ contains a fixed standard Young tableau of shape $λ\vdash k$ tends to $f^λ/k!$ in the large $n$ limit, where $f^λ$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$. We also consider the probability that a random pair $(P,Q)$ of standard Young tableaux of the same shape contains a fixed pair $(A,B)$ of standard Young tableaux.

Skew domino Schensted algorithm and sign-imbalance

Using growth diagrams, we define a skew domino Schensted correspondence which is a domino analogue of the skew Robinson-Schensted correspondence due to Sagan and Stanley. The color-to-spin property of Shimozono and White is extended. As an application, we give a simple generating function for the weighted sum of skew domino tableaux, which is a generalization of Stanley's sign-imbalance formula. The generating function gives a method to calculate the generalized sign-imbalance formula. We also extend Sj{ö}strand's theorems on sign-imbalance of skew shapes.

A combinatorial proof of a formula for Betti numbers of a stacked polytope

For a simplicial complex $Δ$, the graded Betti number $β_{i,j}(k[Δ])$ of the Stanley-Reisner ring $k[Δ]$ over a field $k$ has a combinatorial interpretation due to Hochster. Terai and Hibi showed that if $Δ$ is the boundary complex of a $d$-dimensional stacked polytope with $n$ vertices for $d\geq3$, then $β_{k-1,k}(k[Δ])=(k-1)\binom{n-d}{k}$. We prove this combinatorially.
