Galois module structure of some elementary $p$-abelian extensions

We determine the Galois module structure of the parameterizing space of elementary $p$-abelian extensions of a field $K$ when $\text{Gal}(K/F)$ is any finite $p$-group, under the assumption that the maximal pro-$p$ quotient of the absolute Galois group of $F$ is a free, finitely generated pro-$p$ group, and that $F$ contains a primitive $p$th root of unity if $\text{char}(F) \neq p$.

Equilibria in Kuramoto oscillator networks: An algebraic approach

Kuramoto networks constitute a paradigmatic model for the investigation of collective behavior in networked systems. Despite many advances in recent years, many open questions remain on the solutions for systems composed of coupled Kuramoto oscillators on complex networks. In this article, we describe an algebraic method to find equilibrium points for this kind of system without using standard approximations in the limit of infinite system size or the continuum limit. To do this, we use a recently introduced algebraic approach to the Kuramoto dynamics, which results in an explicitly solvable complex-valued equation that captures the dynamics of the original Kuramoto model. Using this new approach, we obtain equilibria for both the nonlinear original Kuramoto and complex-valued systems. We then completely classify all equilibria in the case of complete graphs originally studied by Kuramoto. Finally, we go on to study equilibria in networks of coupled oscillators with phase lag, in generalized circulant networks, multi-layer networks, and also random networks.

Fekete polynomials, quadratic residues, and arithmetic

Fekete polynomials associate with each prime number $p$ a polynomial with coefficients $-1$ or $1$ except the constant term, which is 0. These coefficients reflect the distribution of quadratic residues modulo $p$. These polynomials were first considered in the 19th century in relation to the studies of Dirichlet $L$-functions. In our paper, we introduce two closely related polynomials. We then express their special values at several integers in terms of certain class numbers and generalized Bernoulli numbers. Additionally, we study the splitting fields and the Galois group of these polynomials. In particular, we propose a conjecture on the structure of these Galois groups.

Galois module structure of the units modulo $p^m$ of cyclic extensions of degree $p^n$

Let $p$ be prime, and $n,m \in \mathbb{N}$. When $K/F$ is a cyclic extension of degree $p^n$, we determine the $\mathbb{Z}/p^m\mathbb{Z}[\text{Gal}(K/F)]$-module structure of $K^\times/K^{\times p^m}$. With at most one exception, each indecomposable summand is cyclic and free over some quotient group of $\text{Gal}(K/F)$. For fixed values of $m$ and $n$, there are only finitely many possible isomorphism classes for the non-free indecomposable summand. These Galois modules act as parameterizing spaces for solutions to certain inverse Galois problems, and therefore this module computation provides insight into the structure of absolute Galois groups. More immediately, however, these results show that Galois cohomology is a context in which seemingly difficult module decompositions can practically be achieved: when $m,n>1$ the modular representation theory allows for an infinite number of indecomposable summands (with no known classification of indecomposable types), and yet the main result of this paper provides a complete decomposition over an infinite family of modules.

Geometry unites synchrony, chimeras, and waves in nonlinear oscillator networks

One of the simplest mathematical models in the study of nonlinear systems is the Kuramoto model, which describes synchronization in systems from swarms of insects to superconductors. We have recently found a connection between the original, real-valued nonlinear Kuramoto model and a corresponding complex-valued system that permits describing the system in terms of a linear operator and iterative update rule. We now use this description to investigate three major synchronization phenomena in Kuramoto networks (phase synchronization, chimera states, and traveling waves), not only in terms of steady state solutions but also in terms of transient dynamics and individual simulations. These results provide new mathematical insight into how sophisticated behaviors arise from connection patterns in nonlinear networked systems.

Mild pro-p groups and the Koszulity conjectures

Let $p$ be a prime, and $\mathbb{F}_p$ the field with $p$ elements. We prove that if $G$ is a mild pro-$p$ group with quadratic $\mathbb{F}_p$-cohomology algebra $H^\bullet(G,\mathbb{F}_p)$, then the algebras $H^\bullet(G,\mathbb{F}_p)$ and $\mathrm{gr}\mathbb{F}_p[\![G]\!]$ - the latter being induced by the quotients of consecutive terms of the $p$-Zassenhaus filtration of $G$ - are both Koszul, and they are quadratically dual to each other. Consequently, if the maximal pro-$p$ Galois group of a field is mild, then Positselski's and Weigel's Koszulity conjectures hold true for such a field.

On the indecomposability of a remarkable new family of modules appearing in Galois theory

A powerful new perspective in the analysis of absolute Galois groups has recently emerged from the study of Galois modules related to classical parameterizing spaces of certain Galois extensions. The recurring trend in these decompositions is their stunning simplicity: almost all summands are free over some quotient ring. The non-free summands which appear are exceptional not only because they are different in form, but because they play the key role in controlling arithmetic conditions that allow the remaining summands to be easily described. In this way, these exceptional summands are the lynchpin for a bevy of new properties of absolute Galois groups that have been gleaned from these surprising decompositions. In one such recent decomposition, a remarkable new exceptional summand was discovered which exhibited interesting properties that have not been seen before. The exceptional summand is drawn from a particular finite family that has not yet been investigated. The main goal of this paper is to introduce this family of modules and verify their indecomposability. We believe this module will be of interest to people working in Galois theory, representation theory, combinatorics, and general algebra. The analysis of these modules includes some interesting new tools, including analogs of $p$-adic expansions.

Galois module structure of square power classes for biquadratic extensions

For a Galois extension $K/F$ with $\text{char}(K)\neq 2$ and $\text{Gal}(K/F) \simeq \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, we determine the $\mathbb{F}_2[\text{Gal}(K/F)]$-module structure of $K^\times/K^{\times 2}$. Although there are an infinite number of (pairwise non-isomorphic) indecomposable $\mathbb{F}_2[\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}]$-modules, our decomposition includes at most $9$ indecomposable types. This paper marks the first time that the Galois module structure of power classes of a field has been fully determined when the modular representation theory allows for an infinite number of indecomposable types.

Enhanced Koszul properties in Galois cohomology

We prove that Galois cohomology satisfies several surprisingly strong versions of Koszul properties, under a well known conjecture, in the finitely generated case. In fact, these versions of Koszulity hold for all finitely generated maximal pro-$p$ quotients of absolute Galois groups which are currently understood. We point out several of these unconditional results which follow from our work. We show how these enhanced versions are preserved under certain natural operations on algebras, generalising several results that were previously established only in the commutative case.

Koszul algebras and quadratic duals in Galois cohomology

We investigate the Galois cohomology of finitely generated maximal pro-$p$ quotients of absolute Galois groups. Assuming the well-known conjectural description of these groups, we show that Galois cohomology has the PBW property. Hence in particular it is a Koszul algebra. This answers positively a conjecture by Positselski in this case. We also provide an analogous unconditional result about Pythagorean fields. Moreover, we establish some results that relate the quadratic dual of Galois cohomology with $p$-Zassenhaus filtration on the group. This paper also contains a survey of Koszul property in Galois cohomology and its relation with absolute Galois groups.

Construction of unipotent Galois extensions and Massey products

For all primes $p$ and all fields, we find a sufficient and necessary condition of the existence of a unipotent Galois extension of degree $p^6$. The main goal of this paper is to describe an explicit construction of such a Galois extension over fields admitting such a Galois extension. This construction is surprising in its simplicity and generality. The problem of finding such a construction has been left open since 2003. Recently a possible solution of this problem gained urgency because of an effort to extend new advances in Galois theory and its relations with Massey products in Galois cohomology.

Counting Galois ${\mathbb U}_4({\mathbb F}_p)$-extensions using Massey products

We use Massey products and their relations to unipotent representations to parametrize and find an explicit formula for the number of Galois extensions of a given local field with the prescribed Galois group ${\mathbb U}_4({\mathbb F}_p)$ consisting of unipotent four by four matrices over ${\mathbb F}_p$. Further applications of this method involve the counting of certain Galois extensions with restricted ramifications, and counting the numbers of Galois ${\mathbb U}_4({\mathbb F}_p)$-extensions of some other fields. For each Demushkin pro-$p$-group, we find a very simple version of the condition when the $n$-fold Massey product of one-dimensional cohomological elements of $G$ with coefficients in ${\mathbb F}_p$, is defined. As an easy consequence, we determine those ${\mathbb U}_n({\mathbb F}_p)$ which occur as an epimorphic image of any given Demushkin group.

Galois p-groups and Galois modules

The smallest non-abelian p-groups play a fundamental role in the theory of Galois p-extensions. We illustrate this by highlighting their role in the definition of the norm residue map in Galois cohomology. We then determine how often these groups --- as well as other closely related, larger p-groups --- occur as Galois groups over given base fields. We show further how the appearance of some Galois groups forces the appearance of other Galois groups in an interesting way.

Ghosts and Strong Ghosts in the Stable Module Category

Suppose that $G$ is a finite group and $k$ is a field of characteristic $p>0$. A ghost map is a map in the stable category of finitely generated $kG$-modules which induces the zero map in Tate cohomology in all degrees. In an earlier paper we showed that the thick subcategory generated by the trivial module has no nonzero ghost maps if and only if the Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ is cyclic of order 2 or 3. In this paper we introduce and study some variations of ghosts maps. In particular, we consider the behavior of ghost maps under restriction and induction functors. We find all groups satisfying a strong form of Freyd's generating hypothesis and show that ghost can be detected on a finite range of Tate cohomology. We also consider maps which mimic ghosts in high degrees.

Witt's cancellation theorem seen as a cancellation

The year 2017 marks the 80th anniversary of Witt's famous paper containing key results, including the Witt cancellation theorem, which form the foundation for the algebraic theory of quadratic forms. We pay homage to this paper by presenting a transparent and algebraic proof of the Witt cancellation theorem, which itself is based on a cancellation. We also present an overview of some recent spectacular work which is still building on Witt's original creation of the algebraic theory of quadratic forms.

Galois groups and cohomological functors

Let $q=p^s$ be a prime power, $F$ a field containing a root of unity of order $q$, and $G_F$ its absolute Galois group. We determine a new canonical quotient $\mathrm{Gal}(F_{(3)}/F)$ of $G_F$ which encodes the full mod-$q$ cohomology ring $H^*(G_F,\mathbb{Z}/q)$ and is minimal with respect to this property. We prove some fundamental structure theorems related to these quotients. In particular, it is shown that when $q=p$ is an odd prime, $F_{(3)}$ is the compositum of all Galois extensions $E$ of $F$ such that $\mathrm{Gal}(E/F)$ is isomorphic to $\{1\}$, $\mathbb{Z}/p$ or to the nonabelian group $H_{p^3}$ of order $p^3$ and exponent $p$.

Milnor K-theory and the graded representation ring

Let F be a field, let G be its absolute Galois group, and let R(G, k) be the representation ring of G over a suitable field k. In this preprint we construct a ring homomorphism from the mod 2 Milnor K-theory k_*(F) to the graded ring gr R(G, k) associated to Grothendieck's γ-filtration. We study this map in particular cases, as well as a related map involving the W-group of F rather than G. The latter is an isomorphism in all cases considered. Naturally this echoes the Milnor conjecture (now a theorem), which states that k_*(F) is isomorphic to the mod 2 cohomology of the absolute Galois group G, and to the graded Witt ring gr W(F). The machinery developed to obtain the above results seems to have independent interest in algebraic topology. We are led to construct an analog of the classical Chern character, which does not involve complex vector bundles and Chern classes but rather real vector bundles and Stiefel-Whitney classes. Thus we show the existence of a ring homomorphism whose source is the graded ring associated to the real K-theory ring K(X) of the topological space X, again with respect to the γ-filtration, and whose target is a certain subquotient of the mod 2 cohomology of X. In order to define this subquotient, we introduce a collection of distinguished Steenrod operations. They are related to Stiefel-Whitney classes by combinatorial identities.

The Kernel Unipotent Conjecture and the vanishing of Massey products for odd rigid fields

A major difficult problem in Galois theory is the characterization of profinite groups which are realizable as absolute Galois groups of fields. Recently the Kernel $n$-Unipotent Conjecture and the Vanishing $n$-Massey Conjecture for $n\geq 3$ were formulated. These conjectures evolved in the last forty years as a byproduct of the application of topological methods to Galois cohomology. We show that both of these conjectures are true for odd rigid fields. This is the first case of a significant family of fields where both of the conjectures are verified besides fields whose Galois groups of $p$-maximal extensions are free pro-$p$-groups. We also prove the Kernel Unipotent Conjecture for Demushkin groups of rank 2, and establish a number of further related results.

Triple Massey products and Galois theory

We show that any triple Massey product with respect to prime 2 contains 0 whenever it is defined over any field. This extends the theorem of M. J. Hopkins and K. G. Wickelgren, from global fields to any fields. This is the first time when the vanishing of any $n$-Massey product for some prime $p$ has been established for all fields. This leads to a strong restriction on the shape of relations in the maximal pro-2-quotients of absolute Galois groups, which was out of reach until now. We also develop an extension of Serre's transgression method to detect triple commutators in relations of pro-$p$-groups, where we do not require that all cup products vanish. We prove that all $n$-Massey products, $n\geq 3$, vanish for general Demushkin groups. We formulate and provide evidence for two conjectures related to the structure of absolute Galois groups of fields. In each case when these conjectures can be verified, they have some interesting concrete Galois theoretic consequences. They are also related to the Bloch-Kato conjecture.

Detecting Fast solvability of equations via small powerful Galois groups

Fix an odd prime $p$, and let $F$ be a field containing a primitive $p$th root of unity. It is known that a $p$-rigid field $F$ is characterized by the property that the Galois group $G_F(p)$ of the maximal $p$-extension $F(p)/F$ is a solvable group. We give a new characterization of $p$-rigidity which says that a field $F$ is $p$-rigid precisely when two fundamental canonical quotients of the absolute Galois groups coincide. This condition is further related to analytic $p$-adic groups and to some Galois modules. When $F$ is $p$-rigid, we also show that it is possible to solve for the roots of any irreducible polynomials in $F[X]$ whose splitting field over $F$ has a $p$-power degree via non-nested radicals. We provide new direct proofs for hereditary $p$-rigidity, together with some characterizations for $G_F(p)$ -- including a complete description for such a group and for the action of it on $F(p)$ -- in the case $F$ is $p$-rigid.

Galois Module Structure of \Z/\ell^n-th Classes of Fields

In this paper we use the Merkurjev-Suslin theorem to explore the structure of arithmetically significant Galois modules that arise from Kummer theory. Let K be a field of characteristic different from a prime \ell, n a positive integer, and suppose that K contains the (\ell^n)^th roots of unity. Let L be the maximal \Z/\ell^n-elementary abelian extension of K, and set G = \Gal(L|K). We consider the G-module J = L^\times/\ell^n and denote its socle series by J_m. We provide a precise condition, in terms of a map to H^3(G,\Z/\ell^n), determining which submodules of J_{m-1} embed in cyclic modules generated by elements of J_m. This generalizes a theorem of Adem, Gao, Karaguezian, and Minac which deals with the case m=\ell^n=2. This description of J_m/J_{m-1} can be viewed as an analogue of the classical Hilbert's Theorem 90 and it is helpful for understanding the G-module J.

From Spline Approximation to Roth's Equation and Schur Functors

Alfeld and Schumaker provide a formula for the dimension of the space of piecewise polynomial functions, called splines, of degree $d$ and smoothness $r$ on a generic triangulation of a planar simplicial complex $Δ$, for $d \geq 3r+1$. Schenck and Stiller conjectured that this formula actually holds for all $d \geq 2r+1$. Up to this moment there was not known a single example where one could show that the bound $d\geq 2r +1$ is sharp. However, in 2005, a possible such example was constructed to show that this bound is the best possible (i.e., the Alfeld-Schumaker formula does not hold if $d=2r$), except that the proof that this formula actually works if $d\geq 2r+1$ has been a challenge until now when we finally show it to be true. The interesting subtle connections with representation theory, matrix theory and commutative and homological algebra seem to explain why this example presented such a challenge. Thus in this paper we present the first example when it is known that the bound $d\geq 2r+1$ is sharp for asserting the validity of the Alfeld-Schumaker formula.

Representations of The miraculous Klein group

The Klein group contains only four elements. Nevertheless this little group contains a number of remarkable entry points to current highways of modern representation theory of groups. In this paper, we shall describe all possible ways in which the Klein group can act on vector spaces over a field of two elements. These are called representations of the Klein group. This description involves some powerful visual methods of representation theory which builds on the work of generations of mathematicians starting roughly with the work of K. Weiestrass. We also discuss some applications to properties of duality and Heller shifts of the representations of the Klein group.

Ghosts in modular representation theory

A ghost over a finite p-group G is a map between modular representations of G which is invisible in Tate cohomology. Motivated by the failure of the generating hypothesis---the statement that ghosts between finite-dimensional G-representations factor through a projective---we define the ghost number of kG to be the smallest integer l such that the composition of any l ghosts between finite-dimensional G-representations factors through a projective. In this paper we study ghosts and the ghost numbers of p-groups. We begin by showing that a weaker version of the generating hypothesis, where the target of the ghost is fixed to be the trivial representation k, holds for all p-groups. We then compute the ghost numbers of all cyclic p-groups and all abelian 2-groups with C_2 as a summand. We obtain bounds on the ghost numbers for abelian p-groups and for all 2-groups which have a cyclic subgroup of index 2. Using these bounds we determine the finite abelian groups which have ghost number at most 2. Our methods involve techniques from group theory, representation theory, triangulated category theory, and constructions motivated from homotopy theory.

On the descending central sequence of absolute Galois groups

Let $p$ be an odd prime number and $F$ a field containing a primitive $p$th root of unity. We prove a new restriction on the group-theoretic structure of the absolute Galois group $G_F$ of $F$. Namely, the third subgroup $G_F^{(3)}$ in the descending $p$-central sequence of $G_F$ is the intersection of all open normal subgroups $N$ such that $G_F/N$ is 1, $\mathbb{Z}/p^2$, or the modular group $M_{p^3}$ of order $p^3$.

Cyclic algebras, Schur indices, norms, and Galois modules

Let p be a prime and suppose that K/F is a cyclic extension of degree p^n with group G. Let J be the F_pG-module K^*/K^{*p} of pth-power classes. In our previous paper we established precise conditions for J to contain an indecomposable direct summand of dimension not a power of p. At most one such summand exists, and its dimension must be p^i+1 for some 0<=i<n. We show that for all primes p and all 0<=i<n, there exists a field extension K/F with a summand of dimension p^i+1.

Finite generation of Tate cohomology

Let G be a finite group and let k be a field of characteristic p. Given a finitely generated indecomposable non-projective kG-module M, we conjecture that if the Tate cohomology $\HHHH^*(G, M)$ of G with coefficients in M is finitely generated over the Tate cohomology ring $\HHHH^*(G, k)$, then the support variety V_G(M) of M is equal to the entire maximal ideal spectrum V_G(k). We prove various results which support this conjecture. The converse of this conjecture is established for modules in the connected component of k in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver for kG, but it is shown to be false in general. It is also shown that all finitely generated kG-modules over a group G have finitely generated Tate cohomology if and only if G has periodic cohomology.

Galois module structure of Galois cohomology for embeddable cyclic extensions of degree p^n

Let p>2 be prime, and let n,m be positive integers. For cyclic field extensions E/F of degree p^n that contain a primitive pth root of unity, we show that the associated F_p[Gal(E/F)]-modules H^m(G_E,mu_p) have a sparse decomposition. When E/F is additionally a subextension of a cyclic, degree p^{n+1} extension E'/F, we give a more refined F_p[Gal(E/F)]-decomposition of H^m(G_E,mu_p).

Mild pro-2-groups and 2-extensions of Q with restricted ramification

Using the mixed Lie algebras of Lazard, we extend the results of the first author on mild groups to the case p=2. In particular, we show that for any finite set S_0 of odd rational primes we can find a finite set S of odd rational primes containing S_0 such that the Galois group of the maximal 2-extension of Q unramified outside S is mild. We thus produce a projective system of such Galois groups which converge to the maximal pro-2-quotient of the absolute Galois group of $\Q$ unramified at 2 and $\infty$. Our results also allow results of Alexander Schmidt on pro-p-fundamental groups of marked arithmetic curves to be extended to the case p=2 over a global field which is either a function field of odd characteristic or a totally imaginary number field.

Reciprocity laws for representations of finite groups

Much has been written on reciprocity laws in number theory and their connections with group representations. In this paper we explore more on these connections. We prove a "reciprocity Law" for certain specific representations of semidirect products of two cyclic groups which is in complete analogy with classical reciprocity laws in number theory. In fact, we show that the celebrated quadratic reciprocity law is a direct consequence of our main theorem applied to a specific group. As another consequence of our main theorem we also recover a classical theorem of Sylvester. Our main focus is on explicit constructions of representations over sufficiently small fields. These investigations give further evidence that there is still much unexplored territory in connections between number theory and group representations, even at an elementary level.
