On order continuous duals of vector lattices of continuous functions on resolvable spaces

A topological space $X$ is called resolvable if it contains a dense subset with dense complement. Using only basic principles, we show that whenever the space $X$ has a resolving subset that can be written as an at most countably infinite union of subsets, in such a way that a given vector lattice of (not necessarily bounded) continuous functions on $X$ separates every point outside the resolving subset from each of its constituents, then the order continuous dual of this lattice is trivial. In order to apply this result in specific cases, we show that several spaces have resolving subsets that can be written as at most countably infinite unions of closed nowhere dense subsets. An appeal to the main result then yields, for example, that, under appropriate conditions, vector lattices of continuous functions on separable spaces, metric spaces, and topological vector spaces have trivial order continuous duals if they separate points and closed nowhere dense subsets. Our results in this direction extend known results in the literature. We also show that, under reasonably mild separation conditions, vector lattices of continuous functions on locally connected $T_1$ Baire spaces without isolated points have trivial order continuous duals. A discussion of the relation between our results and the non-existence of non-zero normal measures is included.

Category measures, the dual of $C(K)^δ$ and hyper-Stonean spaces

For a compact Hausdorff space $K$, we give descriptions of the dual of $C(K)^δ$, the Dedekind completion of the Banach lattice $C(K)$ of continuous, real-valued functions on $K$. We characterize those functionals which are $σ$-order continuous and order continuous, respectively, in terms of Oxtoby's category measures. This leads to a purely topological characterization of hyper-Stonean spaces.

A Note on the Completeness of Cc(X,Y)

It is known that there are complete, Hausdorff and regular convergence vector spaces X and Y such that Lc(X,Y), the space of continuous linear mappings from X into Y equipped with the continuous convergence structure, is not complete. In this paper, we give sufficient conditions on a convergence vector space Y such that Cc(X,Y) is complete for any convergence space X. In particular, we show that this is true for every complete and Hausdorff topological vector space Y.

Beyond Topologies, Part I

Arguments on the need, and usefulness, of going beyond the usual Hausdorff-Kuratowski-Bourbaki, or in short, HKB concept of topology are presented. The motivation comes, among others, from well known {\it topological type processes}, or in short TTP-s, in the theories of Measure, Integration and Ordered Spaces. These TTP-s, as shown by the classical characterization given by the {\it four Moore-Smith conditions}, can {\it no longer} be incorporated within the usual HKB topologies. One of the most successful recent ways to go beyond HKB topologies is that developed in Beattie & Butzmann. It is shown in this work how that extended concept of topology is a {\it particular} case of the earlier one suggested and used by the first author in the study of generalized solutions of large classes of nonlinear partial differential equations.

Singularities in Space-time Foam Algebras

In this paper we consider the structure of the singularity sets associated with generalized functions in certain space-time foam algebras of generalized functions. In particular, we consider the algebra that is defined in terms of an asymptotic vanishing condition outside sets of first Baire category. It is shown that this algebra is in fact isomorphic to the earlier closed nowhere dense algebras. We also discuss general questions regarding singularities that can be handled in space-time foam algebras.
