LUCID: Exposing Algorithmic Bias through Inverse Design

AI systems can create, propagate, support, and automate bias in decision-making processes. To mitigate biased decisions, we both need to understand the origin of the bias and define what it means for an algorithm to make fair decisions. Most group fairness notions assess a model's equality of outcome by computing statistical metrics on the outputs. We argue that these output metrics encounter intrinsic obstacles and present a complementary approach that aligns with the increasing focus on equality of treatment. By Locating Unfairness through Canonical Inverse Design (LUCID), we generate a canonical set that shows the desired inputs for a model given a preferred output. The canonical set reveals the model's internal logic and exposes potential unethical biases by repeatedly interrogating the decision-making process. We evaluate LUCID on the UCI Adult and COMPAS data sets and find that some biases detected by a canonical set differ from those of output metrics. The results show that by shifting the focus towards equality of treatment and looking into the algorithm's internal workings, the canonical sets are a valuable addition to the toolbox of algorithmic fairness evaluation.

Creating electromagnetic cavities using transformation optics

We investigate the potential of transformation optics for the design of novel electromagnetic cavities. First, we determine the dispersion relation of bound modes in a device performing an arbitrary radial coordinate transformation and we discuss a number of such cavity structures. Subsequently, we generalize our study to media that implement azimuthal transformations and we show that such transformations can manipulate the azimuthal mode number. Finally, we discuss how the combination of radial and azimuthal coordinate transformations allows for perfect confinement of subwavelength modes inside a cavity consisting of right-handed materials only.

Excitability in optical systems close to Z2-symmetry

We report theoretically and experimentally on excitability in semiconductor ring lasers in order to reveal a mechanism of excitability, general for systems close to Z2-symmetry. The global shapes of the invariant manifolds of a saddle in the vicinity of a homoclinic loop determine the origin of excitability and the fea- tures of the excitable pulses. We show how to experimentally make a semiconductor ring laser excitable by breaking the Z2-symmetry in a controlled way. The experiments confirm the theoretical predictions.

Solitary and Coupled Semiconductor Ring Lasers as Optical Spiking Neurons

We theoretically investigate the possibility of generating pulses in an excitable (asymmetric) semiconductor ring laser (SRL) using optical trigger pulses. We show that the phase difference between the injected field and the electric field inside the SRL determines the direction of the perturbation in phase space. Due to the folded shape of the excitability threshold, this has an important influence on the ability to cross it. A mechanism for exciting multiple consecutive pulses using a single trigger pulse (i.e. multi pulse excitability) is revealed. We furthermore investigate the possibility of using asymmetric SRLs in a coupled configuration, which is a first step toward an all-optical neural network using SRLs as building blocks.
