The Drell-Yan process as a testing ground for parton distributions up to LHC

The Drell-Yan massive dilepton production in hadron-hadron collisions provides a unique tool, complementary to Deep Inelastic Scattering, for improving our understanding of hadronic substructure and in particular for testing parton distributions. We will consider measurements of the differential and double-differential Drell-Yan cross sections from FNAL Tevatron up to CERN LHC energies and they will be compared to the predictions of perturbative QCD calculations using most recent sets (CT14 and MMHT14) of parton distribution functions, as well as those provided by the statistical approach.

Transverse double-spin asymmetries for electroweak gauge-boson production in high-energy polarized $p^{\uparrow} + p^{\uparrow}$ collisions

We consider the production of $W$ and $Z / γ^{*}$ gauge bosons in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 510 \mbox{GeV}$ available at RHIC at BNL, operating at high luminosity. We stress the importance of measuring the transverse double-spin asymmetries $A_{TT}$, in connection with available transversely polarized beams with a high degree of polarisation. We will discuss some theoretical issues related to the predicted asymmetries. These studies are contrasted to the 2017 RHIC running operation of transversely polarized beams of mid-rapidity $W$ and $Z$ boson production at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=510\,$GeV along with long-term prospects beyond 2020 at RHIC.

New developments in the statistical approach of parton distributions

The quantum statistical parton distributions approach proposed more than one decade ago is revisited by considering a larger set of recent and accurate Deep Inelastic Scattering experimental results. It enables us to improve the description of the data by means of a new determination of the parton distributions. This global next-to-leading order QCD analysis leads to a good description of several structure functions, involving unpolarized parton distributions and helicity distributions, in terms of a rather small number of free parameters. There are several challenging issues. The predictions of this theoretical approach will be tested for single-jet production and charge asymmetry in $W^{\pm}$ production in $\bar p p$ and $p p$ collisions up to LHC energies, using recent data and also for forthcoming experimental results.

New developments in the statistical approach of parton distributions: tests and predictions up to LHC energies

The quantum statistical parton distributions approach proposed more than one decade ago is revisited by considering a larger set of recent and accurate Deep Inelastic Scattering experimental results. It enables us to improve the description of the data by means of a new determination of the parton distributions. This global next-to-leading order QCD analysis leads to a good description of several structure functions, involving unpolarized parton distributions and helicity distributions, in a broad range of $x$ and $Q^2$ and in terms of a rather small number of free parameters. There are several challenging issues and in particular the confirmation of a large positive gluon helicity distribution. The predictions of this theoretical approach will be tested for single-jet production and charge asymmetry in $W^{\pm}$ production in $\bar p p$ and $p p$ collisions up to LHC energies, using recent data and also for forthcoming experimental results.

Do we understand near-forward elastic scattering up to TeV energies?

In 1970, on purely theoretical grounds, all total hadronic total cross sections were predicted to increase without limit for higher and higher energies. This was contrary to the conventional belief at that time. In 1978, an accurate phenomenological model was formulated for the case of proton-proton and antiproton-proton interactions. The parameters for this model were slightly improved in 1984 using the additional available experimental data. Since then, for thirty years these parameters have not changed. This development, including especially the difficult task of formulating this phenomenological model and the comparison of the predictions of this model with later experimental results, is summarized.

How large is the gluon polarization in the statistical parton distributions approach?

We review the theoretical foundations of the quantum statistical approach to parton distributions and we show that by using some recent experimental results from Deep Inelastic Scattering, we are able to improve the description of the data by means of a new determination of the parton distributions. We will see that a large gluon polarization emerges, giving a significant contribution to the proton spin.

Impact picture for near-forward elastic scattering up to LHC energies

We will recall the main feaatures of an accurate phenomenological model to describe successfully near-forward elastic scattering in a wide energy range, including ISR, SPS and Tevatron colliders. A large step in energy domain is accomplished with the LHC collider, presently running, giving the opportunity to confront the new data with the predictions of our theoretical approach.

Statistical description of the flavor structure of the nucleon sea

The theoretical foundations of the quantum statistical approach to parton distributions are reviewed together with the phenomenological motivations from a few specific features of Deep Inelastic Scattering data. The chiral properties of QCD lead to strong relations between quarks and antiquarks distributions and automatically account for the flavor and helicity symmetry breaking of the sea. We are able to describe both unpolarized and polarized structure functions in terms of a small number of parameters. The extension to include their transverse momentum dependence will be also briefly considered.

The quantum statistical parton distributions approach proposed more than one decade ago is revisited by considering a larger set of recent and accurate Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experimental results. It enables us to improve the description of the data by means of a new determination of the parton distributions. We will see that a large gluon polarization emerges, giving a significant contribution to the proton spin.

$W^{\pm}$ bosons production in the quantum statistical parton distributions approach

We consider $W^{\pm}$ gauge bosons production in connection with recent results from BNL-RHIC and FNAL-Tevatron and interesting predictions from the statistical parton distributions. They concern relevant aspects of the structure of the nucleon sea and the high-$x$ region of the valence quark distributions. We also give predictions in view of future proton-neutron collisions experiments at BNL-RHIC.

Do we understand elastic scattering up to LHC energies?

The measurements of high energy \bar p p and pp elastic at ISR, SPS and Tevatron colliders have provided usefull informations on the behavior of the scattering amplitude. A large step in energy domain is accomplished with the LHC collider presently running, giving a unique opportunity to improve our knowledge on the asymptotic regime of the elastic scattering amplitude and to verify the validity of our theoretical approach, to describe the total cross section σ_{tot}(s), the total elastic cross section σ_{el}(s), the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward amplitude ρ(s) and the differential cross section dσ(s,t)/dt.

The transverse momentum dependent statistical parton distributions revisited

The extension of the statistical parton distributions to include their transverse momentum dependence (TMD) is revisited by considering that the proton target has a finite longitudinal momentum. The TMD will be generated by means of a transverse energy sum rule. The new results are mainly relevant for electron-proton inelastic collisions in the low $Q^2$ region. We take into account the effects of the Melosh-Wigner rotation for the helicity distributions.

High-energy asymptotic behavior of the Bourrely-Soffer-Wu model for elastic scattering

Some time ago, an accurate phenomenological approach, the BSW model, was developed for proton-proton and antiproton-proton elastic scattering cross sections at center-of-mass energies above 10 GeV. This model has been used to give successful theoretical predictions for these processes, at successive collider energies. The BSW model involves a combination of integrals that, while computable numerically at fairly high energies, require some mathematical analysis to reveal the high-energy asymptotic behavior. In this paper we present a high-energy asymptotic representation of the scattering amplitude at moderate momentum transfer, for the leading order in an expansion parameter closely related to the logarithm of the center-of-mass energy. The fact that the expansion parameter goes as the logarithm of the energy means that the asymptotic behavior is accurate only for energies greatly beyond any foreseeable experiment. However, we compare the asymptotic representation against the numerically calculated model for energies in a less extreme region of energy. The asymptotic representation is given by a simple formula which, in particular, exhibits the oscillations of the differential cross section with momentum transfer. We also compare the BSW asymptotic behavior with the Singh-Roy unitarity upper bound for the diffraction peak.

The statistical model for parton distributions

The phenomenological motivations, the expressions and the comparison with experiment of the parton distributions inspired by the quantum statistics are described. The Fermi-Dirac expressions for the quarks and their antiparticles automatically account for the correlation between the shape and the first moments of the valence partons, as well as the flavor and spin asymmetries of the sea. One is able to describe with a small number of parameters both unpolarized and polarized structure functions.

General positivity bounds for spin observables in particle inclusive production

Positivity constraints, derived initially assuming parity conservation, for the inclusive reaction of the type $A({spin 1/2})+B({spin 1/2})\to C+X$, where the spins of both initial spin-1/2 particles can be in any possible directions and no polarization is observed in the final state, are generalized to the case of parity violation. By means of a systematic method, we obtain non-trivial bounds involving all the spin observables of the reaction and we discuss some relevant physics processes. Particularly we discover a non-trivial positivity constraint for the processes, $pp\to W^{\pm}/Z^0+X$ or $pp\to \ell^{\pm}+X$ where $\ell^{\pm}$ decayed from $W^{\pm}/Z^0$, which could be checked at the ongoing longitudinal spin program at RHIC.

Semiinclusive DIS cross sections and spin asymmetries in the quantum statistical parton distributions approach

We consider the extension of the statistical parton distributions to include their transverse momentum dependence, by using two different methods, one is based on our quantum statistical approach, the other on a relativistic covariant method. We take into account the effects of the Melosh-Wigner rotation for the polarized distributions. The results obtained can be compared with recent semiinclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering data on the cross section and double longitudinal-spin asymmetries from JLab. We also give some predictions for future experiments on electron-neutron scattering.

Statistical approach of parton distributions: a closer look at the high-$x$ region

We recall the physical features of the parton distributions in the quantum statistical approach of the nucleon, which allows to describe simultaneously, unpolarized and polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering data. Some predictions from a next-to-leading order QCD analysis are compared to recent experimental results and we stress the importance of some tests in the high-$x$ region, to confirm the validity of this approach.

Statistical parton distributions, TMD, positivity and all that

We briefly recall the main physical features of the parton distributions in the quantum statistical picture of the nucleon. Some predictions from a next-to-leading order QCD analysis are successfully compared to recent unpolarized and polarized experimental results. We will discuss the extension to the transverse momentum dependence of the parton distributions and its relevance for semiinclusive deep inelastic scattering. Finally, we will present some new positivity constraints for spin observables and their implications for parton distributions.

Nucleon spin structure at low momentum transfers

The generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule is known to be very sensitive to QCD radiative and power corrections. We improve the previously developed QCD-inspired model for the $Q^2$-dependence of the GDH sum rule. We take into account higher order radiative and higher twist power corrections extracted from precise Jefferson Lab data on the lowest moment of the spin-dependent proton structure function $Γ_1^{p}(Q^2)$ and on the Bjorken sum rule $Γ_1^{p-n}(Q^2)$. By using the singularity-free analytic perturbation theory we demonstrate that the matching point between chiral-like positive-$Q^2$ expansion and QCD operator product $1/Q^2$-expansion for the nucleon spin sum rules can be shifted down to rather low $Q\simeqΛ_{QCD}$ leading to a good description of recent proton, neutron, deuteron and Bjorken sum rule data at all accessible $Q^2$.

New developments in the statistical approach of parton distributions

We recall how parton distributions are constructed in a statistical physical picture of the nucleon. The chiral properties of QCD lead to strong relations between quarks and antiquarks distributions and the importance of the Pauli exclusion principle is also emphasized. A global next-to-leading order QCD analysis of unpolarized and polarized deep-inelastic scattering data allows to determine a small number of free parameters. Some predictions are compared to recent experimental results and we discuss the prospects of this physical framework.

The statistical parton distributions: status and prospects

New experimental results on polarized structure functions, cross sections for $e^{\pm}p$ neutral and charge current reactions and $ν$ ($\barν$) charge current on isoscalar targets are compared with predictions using the statistical parton distributions, which were previously determined. New data on cross sections for Drell-Yan processes, single jet in $p\bar{p}$ collisions and inclusive $π^0$ production in $pp$ collisions are also compared with predictions from this theoretical approach. The good agreement which we find with all these tests against experiment, strenghtens our opinion on the relevance of the role of quantum statistics for parton distributions. We will also discuss the prospects of this physical framework.

Positivity constraints on initial spin observables in inclusive reactions

For any inclusive reaction of the type $A_1({spin} 1/2)+ A_2({spin} 1/2) \to B + X$, we derive new positivity constraints on spin observables and study their implications for theoretical models in view, in particular, of accounting for future data from the polarized $pp$ collider at BNL-RHIC. We find that the single transverse spin asymmetry $A_N$ for several processes, in the central region for example jet production, direct photon production, lepton-pair production, must be such that $|A_N| \lappeq 1/2$, rather than the usual bound $|A_N| \leq 1$.

Impact-Picture Phenomenology for $π^{\pm}p, K^{\pm}p$ and $pp, \bar p p$

We present an extension to $π^{\pm} p$ and $K^{\pm} p$ elastic scattering at high energies of the impact-picture phenomenology we first proposed more than twenty years ago, for $p p$ and $\bar p p$ elastic scattering. We show, in particular, that the analytic form of the opacity function for the proton obtained previously is compatible with the experimental results on $πp$ and $K p$ elastic scattering at high energies. It is proposed that $π^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm}$ external beams be provided from CERN-LHC, so that their elastic scattering from protons can be studied at higher energies. Our phenomenology for $p p$ and $\bar p p$ elastic scattering is updated by including new data and we give predictions for future experiments at BNL-RHIC and CERN-LHC.

Helicity and Transversity Distribution of Nucleon and $Λ$-Hyperon from $Λ$ Fragmentation

It is shown that $Λ$-hyperon fragmentation in charged lepton deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a polarized nucleon target can provide sensitive information concerning the quark helicity and transversity distributions for both nucleon and $Λ$-hyperon at large $x$. Numerical predictions are given for the spin transfers of the produced $Λ$, when the target nucleon is polarized either longitudinally or transversely, and with the nucleon and $Λ$ quark distributions evaluated both in an SU(6) quark-spectator-diquark model and in a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. It is also shown that the predicted spin transfers have different behaviors for proton and neutron targets, and this can provide sensitive tests of different predictions for the quark helicity and transversity distributions of the $d$ valence quark of the proton at large $x$.

$Λ$, $\barΛ$ Polarization and Spin Transfer in Lepton Deep-Inelastic Scattering

The flavor and helicity distributions of the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons for both valence and sea quarks are calculated in a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. We relate these quark distributions to the fragmentation functions of the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$, and calculate the $z$-dependence of the longitudinal spin transfer to the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ in lepton deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). It is shown that the spin transfer to the $Λ$ is compatible with the first HERMES results at DESY and further tests are suggested. We also make predictions for the $z$-dependence of the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ longitudinal polarizations in neutrino (antineutrino) DIS processes. We investigate the sea contribution to the fragmentation functions, and we test a possible scenario where sea quarks in $Λ$ (or sea antiquarks in $\barΛ$) are negatively polarized, whereas sea antiquarks in the $Λ$ (or sea quarks in $\barΛ$) are positively polarized. The asymmetry of the polarized fragmentation functions of sea quarks and antiquarks to $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ provides a way to understand the different behaviour between the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ spin transfers observed in the recent E665 experiment at FNAL.

CP-violation in high-energy collisions of polarized protons

We study the possibility of a large CP/T-violation in lepton pair production in the collisions of polarized protons at RHIC-BNL. We propose the single transverse spin asymmetry which quantifies the possible CP/T-violating effect in this reaction as a sensitive indicator of physics beyond the standard model(SM). We consider two examples of mechanisms beyond the SM which can generate a non-zero asymmetry of this type. They rely on the R-parity violating interactions of supersymmetric models and on phenomenological tensor interactions. We estimate the prospects for observing this effect in future experiments.

PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH TO UNPOLARIZED AND POLARIZED PARTON DISTRIBUTIONS AND EXPERIMENTAL TESTS

We recall our recent description of quark parton densities of the proton at $Q^2=4 GeV^2$ in terms of Fermi-Dirac distributions parametrized with very few free parameters. We have also proposed some simple assumptions to relate unpolarized and polarized quark parton densities which lead to a fair description of the spin-dependent structure functions $xg^p_1(x,Q^2)$ and $xg^n_1(x,Q^2)$ at low $Q^2$. We will show the predictions we obtain after a straightforward DGLAP $Q^2$ evolution and comparison in a much broader $x$ and $Q^2$ range, with several recent and accurate deep-inelastic scattering data. In particular, we will see that we get an excellent agreement with the sharp rise of $F^{ep}_2(x,Q^2)$ for small $x$, recently observed at HERA. Finally, we give several predictions for lepton pair and gauge boson production in $pp$ and $pn$ collisions at high energies which will be tested in the future at RHIC.
