Pion Partonic Distributions in the Statistical Model from Pion-induced Drell-Yan and $J/Ψ$ Production Data

We present a new analysis to extract pion parton distribution functions (PDFs) within the framework of the statistical model. Starting from the statistical model first developed for the spin-1/2 nucleon, we extend this model to describe the spin-0 pion. Based on a combined fit to both the pion-induced Drell-Yan data and the pion-induced $J/Ψ$ production data, a new set of pion PDFs has been obtained. The inclusion of the $J/Ψ$ production data in the combined fit has provided additional constraints for better determining the gluon distribution in the pion. We also compare the pion PDFs obtained in the statistical model with other existing pion PDFs.

A New Extraction of Pion Parton Distributions in the Statistical Model

We present a new analysis to extract pion's parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the framework of the statistical model. Starting from the statistical model framework first developed for the spin-1/2 nucleon, we apply appropriate modifications taking into account the spin-0 nature of pion and the isospin and charge-conjugation symmetry properties. This results in a significant reduction of the number of parameters compared to a recent work to extract pion's PDFs. Using $π^-$-induced Drell-Yan data to determine the parameters of this statistical model approach, we show that a good description of these experimental data with Next-to-Leading order QCD calculations can be obtained. Good agreement between the calculations and the $π^+/π^-$ Drell-Yan cross section ratio data, not included in the global fit, has confirmed the predictive power of these new pion PDFs.

The Drell-Yan process as a testing ground for parton distributions up to LHC

The Drell-Yan massive dilepton production in hadron-hadron collisions provides a unique tool, complementary to Deep Inelastic Scattering, for improving our understanding of hadronic substructure and in particular for testing parton distributions. We will consider measurements of the differential and double-differential Drell-Yan cross sections from FNAL Tevatron up to CERN LHC energies and they will be compared to the predictions of perturbative QCD calculations using most recent sets (CT14 and MMHT14) of parton distribution functions, as well as those provided by the statistical approach.

Transverse double-spin asymmetries for electroweak gauge-boson production in high-energy polarized $p^{\uparrow} + p^{\uparrow}$ collisions

We consider the production of $W$ and $Z / γ^{*}$ gauge bosons in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 510 \mbox{GeV}$ available at RHIC at BNL, operating at high luminosity. We stress the importance of measuring the transverse double-spin asymmetries $A_{TT}$, in connection with available transversely polarized beams with a high degree of polarisation. We will discuss some theoretical issues related to the predicted asymmetries. These studies are contrasted to the 2017 RHIC running operation of transversely polarized beams of mid-rapidity $W$ and $Z$ boson production at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=510\,$GeV along with long-term prospects beyond 2020 at RHIC.

New developments in the statistical approach of parton distributions

The quantum statistical parton distributions approach proposed more than one decade ago is revisited by considering a larger set of recent and accurate Deep Inelastic Scattering experimental results. It enables us to improve the description of the data by means of a new determination of the parton distributions. This global next-to-leading order QCD analysis leads to a good description of several structure functions, involving unpolarized parton distributions and helicity distributions, in terms of a rather small number of free parameters. There are several challenging issues. The predictions of this theoretical approach will be tested for single-jet production and charge asymmetry in $W^{\pm}$ production in $\bar p p$ and $p p$ collisions up to LHC energies, using recent data and also for forthcoming experimental results.

New developments in the statistical approach of parton distributions: tests and predictions up to LHC energies

The quantum statistical parton distributions approach proposed more than one decade ago is revisited by considering a larger set of recent and accurate Deep Inelastic Scattering experimental results. It enables us to improve the description of the data by means of a new determination of the parton distributions. This global next-to-leading order QCD analysis leads to a good description of several structure functions, involving unpolarized parton distributions and helicity distributions, in a broad range of $x$ and $Q^2$ and in terms of a rather small number of free parameters. There are several challenging issues and in particular the confirmation of a large positive gluon helicity distribution. The predictions of this theoretical approach will be tested for single-jet production and charge asymmetry in $W^{\pm}$ production in $\bar p p$ and $p p$ collisions up to LHC energies, using recent data and also for forthcoming experimental results.

Parton Distribution Functions properties of the statistical model

We show that the parton distribution functions (PDF) described by the statistical model have very interesting physical properties which help to understand the structure of partons. The role of the quark helicity components is emphasized as they represent the building blocks of the PDF. In the model the sign of the polarized quarks PDF comes out in a quite natural way once the thermodynamical potentials with a given helicity are known. Introducing the concept of entropy we study the states madeof |2u + d >, |u +d +s > and $|2\bar u +\bar d >$, for a fixed Q^2, the variation with x shows that the first state has a dominant entropy due to the effect of u quark. We prove that the PDF parameters obtained from experiments give in fact an optimal solution of an entropy equation subject to constraints. We develop a new approach of the polarized gluon density based on a neural model which explains its property, in particular, a large positivity value and an agreement with the positvity constraint. An extension of this neural approach is applied to quarks giving a coherent description of the partons structure.

Do we understand near-forward elastic scattering up to TeV energies?

In 1970, on purely theoretical grounds, all total hadronic total cross sections were predicted to increase without limit for higher and higher energies. This was contrary to the conventional belief at that time. In 1978, an accurate phenomenological model was formulated for the case of proton-proton and antiproton-proton interactions. The parameters for this model were slightly improved in 1984 using the additional available experimental data. Since then, for thirty years these parameters have not changed. This development, including especially the difficult task of formulating this phenomenological model and the comparison of the predictions of this model with later experimental results, is summarized.

How large is the gluon polarization in the statistical parton distributions approach?

We review the theoretical foundations of the quantum statistical approach to parton distributions and we show that by using some recent experimental results from Deep Inelastic Scattering, we are able to improve the description of the data by means of a new determination of the parton distributions. We will see that a large gluon polarization emerges, giving a significant contribution to the proton spin.

Impact picture for near-forward elastic scattering up to LHC energies

We will recall the main feaatures of an accurate phenomenological model to describe successfully near-forward elastic scattering in a wide energy range, including ISR, SPS and Tevatron colliders. A large step in energy domain is accomplished with the LHC collider, presently running, giving the opportunity to confront the new data with the predictions of our theoretical approach.

Statistical description of the flavor structure of the nucleon sea

The theoretical foundations of the quantum statistical approach to parton distributions are reviewed together with the phenomenological motivations from a few specific features of Deep Inelastic Scattering data. The chiral properties of QCD lead to strong relations between quarks and antiquarks distributions and automatically account for the flavor and helicity symmetry breaking of the sea. We are able to describe both unpolarized and polarized structure functions in terms of a small number of parameters. The extension to include their transverse momentum dependence will be also briefly considered.

Statistical description of the proton spin with a large gluon helicity distribution

The quantum statistical parton distributions approach proposed more than one decade ago is revisited by considering a larger set of recent and accurate Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experimental results. It enables us to improve the description of the data by means of a new determination of the parton distributions. We will see that a large gluon polarization emerges, giving a significant contribution to the proton spin.

$W^{\pm}$ bosons production in the quantum statistical parton distributions approach

We consider $W^{\pm}$ gauge bosons production in connection with recent results from BNL-RHIC and FNAL-Tevatron and interesting predictions from the statistical parton distributions. They concern relevant aspects of the structure of the nucleon sea and the high-$x$ region of the valence quark distributions. We also give predictions in view of future proton-neutron collisions experiments at BNL-RHIC.

An analysis of elastic scattering reactions with a Fermi-Dirac pomeron opaqueness in impact parameter space

In the Bourrely-Soffer-Wu model (BSW) we introduce for the pomeron a new opaqueness in impact parameter space in terms of different quark contributions described by a Fermi-Dirac distribution. In order to check the validity of this assumption we consider $p~p$, $\bar p~p$, and $π^{\pm}~p$ elastic scattering. We emphasize the role of the gluon above the diffraction peak in the differential cross sections. Once these contributions are determined we extend the model to light nuclei elastic reactions like $p~d$, $p~^4\mbox{He}$ and $π^{\pm}~^4\mbox{He}$. The results obtained show a good description of all these elastic processes over the available experimental energy range and moderate momentum transfer.

The transverse momentum dependent statistical parton distributions revisited

The extension of the statistical parton distributions to include their transverse momentum dependence (TMD) is revisited by considering that the proton target has a finite longitudinal momentum. The TMD will be generated by means of a transverse energy sum rule. The new results are mainly relevant for electron-proton inelastic collisions in the low $Q^2$ region. We take into account the effects of the Melosh-Wigner rotation for the helicity distributions.

High-energy asymptotic behavior of the Bourrely-Soffer-Wu model for elastic scattering

Some time ago, an accurate phenomenological approach, the BSW model, was developed for proton-proton and antiproton-proton elastic scattering cross sections at center-of-mass energies above 10 GeV. This model has been used to give successful theoretical predictions for these processes, at successive collider energies. The BSW model involves a combination of integrals that, while computable numerically at fairly high energies, require some mathematical analysis to reveal the high-energy asymptotic behavior. In this paper we present a high-energy asymptotic representation of the scattering amplitude at moderate momentum transfer, for the leading order in an expansion parameter closely related to the logarithm of the center-of-mass energy. The fact that the expansion parameter goes as the logarithm of the energy means that the asymptotic behavior is accurate only for energies greatly beyond any foreseeable experiment. However, we compare the asymptotic representation against the numerically calculated model for energies in a less extreme region of energy. The asymptotic representation is given by a simple formula which, in particular, exhibits the oscillations of the differential cross section with momentum transfer. We also compare the BSW asymptotic behavior with the Singh-Roy unitarity upper bound for the diffraction peak.

On the guided states of 3D biperiodic Schrödinger operators

We consider the Laplacian operator H_0 perturbed by a non-positive potential $V$, which is periodic in two directions, and decays in the remaining one. We are interested in the characterization and decay properties of the guided states, defined as the eigenfunctions of the reduced operators in the Bloch-Floquet-Gelfand transform of H_0+V in the periodic variables. If V is sufficiently small and decreases fast enough in the infinite direction, we prove that, generically, these guided states are characterized by quasi-momenta belonging to some one-dimensional compact real analytic submanifold of the Brillouin zone. Moreover they decay faster than any polynomial function in the infinite direction.

The statistical model for parton distributions

The phenomenological motivations, the expressions and the comparison with experiment of the parton distributions inspired by the quantum statistics are described. The Fermi-Dirac expressions for the quarks and their antiparticles automatically account for the correlation between the shape and the first moments of the valence partons, as well as the flavor and spin asymmetries of the sea. One is able to describe with a small number of parameters both unpolarized and polarized structure functions.

Semiinclusive DIS cross sections and spin asymmetries in the quantum statistical parton distributions approach

We consider the extension of the statistical parton distributions to include their transverse momentum dependence, by using two different methods, one is based on our quantum statistical approach, the other on a relativistic covariant method. We take into account the effects of the Melosh-Wigner rotation for the polarized distributions. The results obtained can be compared with recent semiinclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering data on the cross section and double longitudinal-spin asymmetries from JLab. We also give some predictions for future experiments on electron-neutron scattering.

Model-independent description of $B\to πlν$ decays and a determination of $|V_{ub}|$

We propose a new parametrization of the $B\toπ$ vector form factor, $f_+(q^2)$, as an expansion in powers of a conformal mapping variable, which satisfies unitarity, analyticity and perturbative QCD scaling. The unitarity constraint is used also for defining the systematic error of the expansion. We fit with the new parametrization the available experimental and theoretical information on exclusive $B\toπlν$ decays, making a conservative estimate of the effects of correlations in the systematic and statistical errors of the lattice results. With four parameters to describe $f_+(q^2)$, the systematic error is negligible in the whole semileptonic region. We also obtain $|V_{ub}|=(3.54 \pm 0.30) \times 10^{-3}$ where, in our approach, the uncertainty is predominantly statistical.

The statistical parton distributions: status and prospects

New experimental results on polarized structure functions, cross sections for $e^{\pm}p$ neutral and charge current reactions and $ν$ ($\barν$) charge current on isoscalar targets are compared with predictions using the statistical parton distributions, which were previously determined. New data on cross sections for Drell-Yan processes, single jet in $p\bar{p}$ collisions and inclusive $π^0$ production in $pp$ collisions are also compared with predictions from this theoretical approach. The good agreement which we find with all these tests against experiment, strenghtens our opinion on the relevance of the role of quantum statistics for parton distributions. We will also discuss the prospects of this physical framework.

Impact-Picture Phenomenology for $π^{\pm}p, K^{\pm}p$ and $pp, \bar p p$

We present an extension to $π^{\pm} p$ and $K^{\pm} p$ elastic scattering at high energies of the impact-picture phenomenology we first proposed more than twenty years ago, for $p p$ and $\bar p p$ elastic scattering. We show, in particular, that the analytic form of the opacity function for the proton obtained previously is compatible with the experimental results on $πp$ and $K p$ elastic scattering at high energies. It is proposed that $π^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm}$ external beams be provided from CERN-LHC, so that their elastic scattering from protons can be studied at higher energies. Our phenomenology for $p p$ and $\bar p p$ elastic scattering is updated by including new data and we give predictions for future experiments at BNL-RHIC and CERN-LHC.

PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH TO UNPOLARIZED AND POLARIZED PARTON DISTRIBUTIONS AND EXPERIMENTAL TESTS

We recall our recent description of quark parton densities of the proton at $Q^2=4 GeV^2$ in terms of Fermi-Dirac distributions parametrized with very few free parameters. We have also proposed some simple assumptions to relate unpolarized and polarized quark parton densities which lead to a fair description of the spin-dependent structure functions $xg^p_1(x,Q^2)$ and $xg^n_1(x,Q^2)$ at low $Q^2$. We will show the predictions we obtain after a straightforward DGLAP $Q^2$ evolution and comparison in a much broader $x$ and $Q^2$ range, with several recent and accurate deep-inelastic scattering data. In particular, we will see that we get an excellent agreement with the sharp rise of $F^{ep}_2(x,Q^2)$ for small $x$, recently observed at HERA. Finally, we give several predictions for lepton pair and gauge boson production in $pp$ and $pn$ collisions at high energies which will be tested in the future at RHIC.
