A locally conformally symplectic structure on Kerr space-time

R Kerr's Ricci-flat Lorentz 4-manifold was shown by B Carter in 1968 to support a classically completely integrable system of geodesics; here we interpret this system in terms of a locally conformally symplectic structure, which we identify (§2.2) using characteristic classes defined by Kerr-Schild Cartesian coordinates (regarded as a map to the Cayley-Penrose compactification of Minkowski space). This leads to the definition of an interesting cobordism category of contact 3-manifolds and 4-dimensional locally conformally symplectic cobordisms between them.

At the boundary of Minkowski space

The Cayley transform compactifies Minkowski space $\M$, realized as self-adjoint $2\times2$ complex matrices following Penrose, as the unitary group $\U(2)$. Its complement is a compactification of a copy of a light-cone as it is usually drawn, constructed by adjoining a bubble or $\CP_1$ of unitary matrices with eigenvalue $\pm 1$ at the ends of a lightcone at infinity. The Brauer-Wall group of $\U(2)$ (i.e. of fields of certain kinds of graded $\Cs$-algebras, up to projective equivalence) is $\Z_2 \times \Z$, defining an interesting class of nontrivial examples of Araki-Haag-Kastler backgrounds for quantum field theories on compactified Minkowski space. The second part of this paper extends such models to link presentations of more general spin four-manifolds.

Toward the group completion of the Burau representation

Following Boardman-Vogt, McDuff, Segal, and others, we construct a monoidal topological groupoid or space of finite subsets of the plane, and interpret the Burau representation of knot theory as a topological quantum field theory defined on it. Its determinant or {\bf writhe} is an invertible braided monoidal TQFT which group completes to define a Hopkins-Mahowald model for integral homology as an $E_2$ Thom spectrum. We use these ideas to construct an infinite cyclic (Alexander) cover for the space of finite subsets of $\C$, and we argue that the TQFT defined by Burau is closely related to the SU(2)-valued Wess-Zumino-Witten model for string theory on $\R^3_+$.

Complex orientations for THH of some perfectoid fields

This sketch argues that work of Hesselholt on the topological Hochschild homology of $\Cp$ extends, using work of Scholze and others, to define complex orientations for a version of topological Hochschild homology for rings of integers in a natural class of generalized cyclotomic perfectoid fields; and that the resulting spectra provide geometrically interesting targets for analogs of the Chern character, defined for certain integral lifts of the extraordinary $K$-functors of chromatic homotopy theory.

Renormalization groupoids in algebraic topology

Continuing work begin in arXiv:1910.12609, we interpret the Hurewicz homomorphism for Baker and Richter's noncommutative complex cobordism spectrum $Mξ$ in terms of characteristic numbers (indexed by quasi-symmetric functions) for complex-oriented quasitoric manifolds, and show that automorphisms or cohomology operations on this representation are defined by a `renormalization' Hopf algebra of formal diffeomorphisms at the origin of the noncommutative line, previously considered (over $Q$) in quantum electrodynamics. The resulting structure can be presented in purely algebraic terms, as a groupoid scheme over $Z$ defined by a coaction of this Hopf algebra on the ring of noncommutative symmetric functions. We sketch some applications to symplectic toric manifolds, combinatorics of simplicial spheres, and statistical mechanics.

Topological invariants of some chemical reaction networks

Certain toric dynamical systems studied in physical chemistry have associated toric varieties which, when smooth, represent elements in the homotopy groups $Mξ_*B\T$ of a symplectic variant of the $A_\infty$ Baker-Richter spectrum $Mξ$. The noncommutative Hopf algebroid $(Mξ_*,Mξ_*Mξ)$ has interesting connections to the group of formal diffeomorphism of the noncommutative line, conjecturally defining a noncommutative analog Helmholtz free energy for systems of complex symplectic (completely integrable) Hamiltonian toric manifolds

What $Ell$ sees that $K$ doesn't (when $p >3$)

We use Andrew Baker's analysis of the cofiber of the endomorphism of the $p$-adic elliptic spectrum ($p>3$) defined by multiplication by the `Hasse invariant' $E_{p-1}$ to present its completion away from the locus of ordinary elliptic curves as a sum of roughly $p/12$ copies (indexed by supesingular elliptic curves) of $p$-adic lifts of the height two mod $p$ cohomology theory $K(2)$. See a recent paper of Zhu Yifei for a much deeper exploration of the topics considered in this note.

A remark on Hopkins' chromatic splitting conjecture

Ravenel proved the remarkable fact that the $K$-theoretic localization $L_K S^0$ of the sphere spectrum has $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ as homotopy group in dimension -2. Mike Hopkins' chromatic splitting conjecture implies more generally that there are $3^{n-1}$ copies of $(\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z})_p$ in the homotopy groups of the $E(n)$-localization of $S^0$; but where these copies occur can be confusing. We try here to simplify this book-keeping.

Homotopy-theoretically enriched categories of noncommutative motives

Waldhausen's $K$-theory of the sphere spectrum (closely related to the algebraic $K$-theory of the integers) is a naturally augmented $S^0$-algebra, and so has a Koszul dual. Classic work of Deligne and Goncharov implies an identification of the rationalization of this (covariant) dual with the Hopf algebra of functions on the motivic group for their category of mixed Tate motives over $\Z$. This paper argues that the rationalizations of categories of non-commutative motives defined recently by Blumberg, Gepner, and Tabuada consequently have natural enrichments, with morphism objects in the derived category of mixed Tate motives over $\Z$. We suggest that homotopic descent theory lifts this structure to define a category of motives defined not over $\Z$ but over the sphere ring-spectrum $S^0$.

The Stable Symplectic category and a conjecture of Kontsevich

We consider an oriented version of the stable symplectic category defined in \cite{N}. We show that the group of monoidal automorphisms of this category, that fix each object, contains a natural subgroup isomorphic to the solvable quotient (or a graded-abelian quotient) of the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group. This establishes a stable version of a conjecture of Kontsevich which states that groups closely related to the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group act on the moduli space of certain field theories \cite{KO}. The above quotient of the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group is also shown to be the motivic group of monoidal automorphisms of a canonical representation (or fiber functor) on the stable symplectic category.

$MSp$ localized away from $2$ and odd formal group laws

We investigate the relationship between complex and symplectic cobordism localized away from the prime~$2$ and show that these theories are related much as a real Lie group is related to its complexification. This suggests that ideas from the theory of symmetric spaces might be used to illuminate these subjects. In particular, we give an explicit equivalence of ring spectra \[ MSp[1/2]\wedge Sp/U_+\simeq MU[1/2] \] and deduce that $MU[1/2]$ is a wedge of copies of $MSp[1/2]$. We discuss the implications for the structure of the stable operation algebra $MSp[1/2]^*MSp[1/2]$ and the dual cooperation algebra $MSp[1/2]_*MSp[1/2]$. Finally we describe some related Witt vector algebra and apply our results to the study of formal involutions on the category of formal group laws over a $\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$-algebra.

Categories of orbit types for proper Lie groupoids

It is widely understood that the quotient space of a topological group action can have a complicated combinatorial structure, indexed somehow by the sotropy groups of the action, but how best to record this structure seems unclear. This sketch defines a database category of orbit types for a proper Lie groupoid (based on recent work with roots in the theory of geometric quantization) as an attempt to capture some of this information.

Diagonalizing the genome I: navigation in tree spaces

The orientable cover of the moduli space of real genus zero algebraic curves with marked points is a compact aspherical manifold tiled by associahedra, which resolves the singularities of the space of phylogenetic trees. The resolution maps planar metric trees to their underlying abstract representatives, collapsing and folding an explicit geometric decomposition of the moduli space into cubes. This decomposition endows the resolving space with an interesting canonical pseudometric. The second part of this paper defines a related (stacky) resolution of a space of real quadratic forms, and suggests, perhaps without much justification, that systems of oscillators parametrized by such objects may provide useful models in genomics.

Diagonalizing the genome II: toward possible applications

In a previous paper, we showed that the orientable cover of the moduli space of real genus zero algebraic curves with marked points is a compact aspherical manifold tiled by associahedra, which resolves the singularities of the space of phylogenetic trees. In this draft of a sequel, we construct a related (stacky) resolution of a space of real quadratic forms, and suggest, perhaps without much justification, that systems of oscillators parametrized by such objects may may provide useful models in genomics.

Local fields and extraordinary K-theory

We describe integral lifts K(L), indexed by local fields L of degree n = [L:\Q_p], of the extraordinary cohomology theories K(n), and apply the generalized character theory of Hopkins, Kuhn and Ravenel to identify K(L)(BG) \otimes \Q$, for a finite group G, as a ring of functions on a certain scheme \frak C_LG étale over L, whose points are conjugacy classes of homomorphisms from the valuation ring of L to G. When L is \Q_p this specializes to a classical theorem of Artin and Atiyah.

Quantized timelines

Conformal nets are a classical topic in quantum field theory: they assign operator algebras to one-dimensional manifolds, and have close connections with one-dimensional topological field theories. It seems to be well-known that the usual axioms for these constructions imply close relations between the action of the projective group on the line, and Connes' intrinsic flow on $C^*$-algebras. This note attempts to pin down this specific fact, in terms of a category of (noncommutative) algebras and equivalence classes, under inner automorphisms, of homomorphisms between them. That category may be of independent interest.

Theories of anything

We suggest a generalization of π_0 for topological groupoids, which encodes incidence relations among the strata of the associated quotient object, and argue for its utility by example, starting from the orbit categories of the theory of compact Lie groups. One of the points of this note is that Thom's theory of structurally stable forms fits quite nicely with the categorical theory of databases developed recently by D. Spivak; the other is that the stratifications studied by Thom are closely related to the phase transitions studied in physics, and that the generalization of π_0 proposed here may be useful in their study: in particular, in organizing our understanding of the scaling laws which naturally accompany such phenomena, in the theory of condensed matter, biology, finance ...

The Cosmic Galois group as Koszul dual to Waldhausen's A(pt)

K. Hess's theory of homotopical descent, applied to the large categories of motives defined recently by Blumberg, Gepner, and Tabuada, suggests that the Koszul dual of Waldhausen's K-theory of the sphere spectrum, regarded as a supplemented algebra via the Dennis trace, plays a very general role as a kind of motivic group. After tensoring with the rationals, the resulting Hopf algebra has close relations to the ring of quasi-symmetric functions and work of Baker and Richter on one hand, and on the other to work of Deligne and others on the motivic group for mixed Tate motives.

On the Algebraic K-theory of Monoids

Let $A$ be a not necessarily commutative monoid with zero such that projective $A$-acts are free. This paper shows that the algebraic K-groups of $A$ can be defined using the +-construction and the Q-construction. It is shown that these two constructions give the same K-groups. As an immediate application, the homotopy invariance of algebraic K-theory of certain affine $\mathbb{F}_1$-schemes is obtained. From the computation of $K_2(A),$ where $A$ is the monoid associated to a finitely generated abelian group, the universal central extension of certain groups are constructed.

String orientations of simplicial homology manifolds

Simplicial homology manifolds are proposed as an interesting class of geometric objects, more general than topological manifolds but still quite tractable, in which questions about the microstructure of space-time can be naturally formulated. Their string orientations are classified by $H^3$ with coefficients in an extension of the usual group of D-brane charges, by cobordism classes of homology three-spheres with trivial Rokhlin invariant.

Completions of Z/(p)-Tate cohomology of periodic spectra

We construct splittings of some completions of the Z/(p)-Tate cohomology of E(n) and some related spectra. In particular, we split (a completion of) tE(n) as a (completion of) a wedge of E(n-1)'s as a spectrum, where t is shorthand for the fixed points of the Z/(p)-Tate cohomology spectrum (ie Mahowald's inverse limit of P_{-k} smash SE(n)). We also give a multiplicative splitting of tE(n) after a suitable base extension.
