Radiopurity of a kg-scale PbWO$_4$ cryogenic detector produced from archaeological Pb for the RES-NOVA experiment

RES-NOVA is a newly proposed experiment for the detection of neutrinos from astrophysical sources, mainly Supernovae, using an array of cryogenic detectors made of PbWO$_4$ crystals produced from archaeological Pb. This unconventional material, characterized by intrinsic high radiopurity, enables to achieve low-background levels in the region of interest for the neutrino detection via Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE$ν$NS). This signal lies at the detector energy threshold, O(1 keV), and it is expected to be hidden by naturally occurring radioactive contaminants of the crystal absorber. Here, we present the results of a radiopurity assay on a 0.84 kg PbWO$_4$ crystal produced from archaeological Pb operated as a cryogenic detector. The crystal internal radioactive contaminations are: $^{232}$Th $<$40 $μ$Bq/kg, $^{238}$U $<$30 $μ$Bq/kg, $^{226}$Ra 1.3 mBq/kg and $^{210}$Pb 22.5 mBq/kg. We present also a background projection for the final experiment and possible mitigation strategies for further background suppression. The achieved results demonstrate the feasibility of realizing this new class of detectors.

Search for Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay of $^{64}$Zn and $^{70}$Zn with CUPID-0

CUPID-0 is the first pilot experiment of CUPID, a next-generation project searching for neutrino-less double beta decay. In its first scientific run, CUPID-0 operated 26 ZnSe cryogenic calorimeters coupled to light detectors in the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we analyzed a ZnSe exposure of 11.34 kg$\times$yr to search for the neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{70}$Zn and for the neutrino-less positron-emitting electron capture of $^{64}$Zn. We found no evidence for these decays and set 90$\%$ credible interval limits of ${\rm T}_{1/2}^{0νββ}(^{70}{\rm Zn}) > 1.6 \times 10^{21}$ yr and ${\rm T}_{1/2}^{0νEC β+}(^{64}{\rm Zn}) > 1.2 \times 10^{22}$ yr, surpassing by almost two orders of magnitude the previous experimental results

Evidence of Single State Dominance in the Two-Neutrino Double-$β$ Decay of Se-82 with CUPID-0

We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double-$β$ decay of $^{82}$Se performed for the first time with cryogenic calorimeters, in the framework of the CUPID-0~experiment. With an exposure of 9.95 kg$\times$yr of Zn$^{82}$Se, we determine the two-neutrino double-$β$ decay half-life of $^{82}$Se with an unprecedented precision level, $T_{1/2}^{2ν} = [8.60 \pm 0.03 \textrm{(stat.)}~^{+0.17}_{-0.10} \textrm{(syst.)}] \times 10^{19}~\textrm{yr}$. The very high signal-to-background ratio, along with the detailed reconstruction of the background sources allowed us to identify the single state dominance as the underlying mechanism of such process, demonstrating that the higher state dominance hypothesis is disfavored at the level of 5.5 $σ$.

Na-based crystal scintillators for next-generation rare event searches

The growing interest in clarifying the controversial situation in the Dark Matter sector has driven the experimental efforts towards new ways to investigate the long-standing DAMA/LIBRA result. Among them, low-temperature calorimeters based on Na-containing scintillating crystals offer the possibility to clarify the nature of the measured signal via particle identification. Here we report the first measurement of Na-containing crystals, based on material different from NaI, i.e. Na$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ and Na$_2$W$_2$O$_7$, pointing out their excellent performance in term of energy resolution, light yield, and particle identification.

Double-beta decay of ${}^{130}$Te to the first $0^+$ excited state of ${}^{130}$Xe with CUORE-0

We report on a search for double beta decay of $^{130}$Te to the first $0^{+}$ excited state of $^{130}$Xe using a 9.8 kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{130}$Te collected with the CUORE-0 experiment. In this work we exploit different topologies of coincident events to search for both the neutrinoless and two-neutrino double-decay modes. We find no evidence for either mode and place lower bounds on the half-lives: $τ^{0ν}_{0^+}>7.9\cdot 10^{23}$ yr and $τ^{2ν}_{0^+}>2.4\cdot 10^{23}$ yr. Combining our results with those obtained by the CUORICINO experiment, we achieve the most stringent constraints available for these processes: $τ^{0ν}_{0^+}>1.4\cdot 10^{24}$ yr and $τ^{2ν}_{0^+}>2.5\cdot 10^{23}$ yr.

Analysis Techniques for the Evaluation of the Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay Lifetime in $^{130}$Te with CUORE-0

We describe in detail the methods used to obtain the lower bound on the lifetime of neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay in $^{130}$Te and the associated limit on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino using the CUORE-0 detector. CUORE-0 is a bolometric detector array located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso that was designed to validate the background reduction techniques developed for CUORE, a next-generation experiment scheduled to come online in 2016. CUORE-0 is also a competitive $0νββ$ decay search in its own right and functions as a platform to further develop the analysis tools and procedures to be used in CUORE. These include data collection, event selection and processing, as well as an evaluation of signal efficiency. In particular, we describe the amplitude evaluation, thermal gain stabilization, energy calibration methods, and the analysis event selection used to create our final $0νββ$ decay search spectrum. We define our high level analysis procedures, with emphasis on the new insights gained and challenges encountered. We outline in detail our fitting methods near the hypothesized $0νββ$ decay peak and catalog the main sources of systematic uncertainty. Finally, we derive the $0νββ$ decay half-life limits previously reported for CUORE-0, $T^{0ν}_{1/2}>2.7\times10^{24}$ yr, and in combination with the Cuoricino limit, $T^{0ν}_{1/2}>4.0\times10^{24}$ yr.

CUORE-0 detector: design, construction and operation

The CUORE experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te with an array of 988 TeO$_2$ bolometers arranged in 19 towers. CUORE-0, the first tower assembled according to the CUORE procedures, was built and commissioned at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, and took data from March 2013 to March 2015. In this paper we describe the design, construction and operation of the CUORE-0 experiment, with an emphasis on the improvements made over a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. In particular, we demonstrate with CUORE-0 data that the design goals of CUORE are within reach.

First array of enriched Zn$^{82}$Se bolometers to search for double beta decay

The R&D activity performed during the last years proved the potential of ZnSe scintillating bolometers to the search for neutrino-less double beta decay, motivating the realization of the first large-mass experiment based on this technology: CUPID-0. The isotopic enrichment in $^{82}$Se, the Zn$^{82}$Se crystals growth, as well as the light detectors production have been accomplished, and the experiment is now in construction at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). In this paper we present the results obtained testing the first three Zn$^{82}$Se crystals operated as scintillating bolometers, and we prove that their performance in terms of energy resolution, background rejection capability and intrinsic radio-purity complies with the requirements of CUPID-0.

Large Stark tuning of donor electron spin quantum bits in germanium

Donor electron spins in semiconductors make exceptional quantum bits because of their long coherence times and compatibility with industrial fabrication techniques. Despite many advances in donor-based qubit technology, it remains difficult to selectively manipulate single donor electron spins. Here, we show that by replacing the prevailing semiconductor host material (silicon) with germanium, donor electron spin qubits can be electrically tuned by more than an ensemble linewidth, making them compatible with gate addressable quantum computing architectures. Using X-band pulsed electron spin resonance, we measured the Stark effect for donor electron spins in germanium. We resolved both spin-orbit and hyperfine Stark shifts and found that at 0.4 T, the spin-orbit Stark shift dominates. The spin-orbit Stark shift is highly anisotropic, depending on the electric field orientation relative to the crystal axes and external magnetic field. When the Stark shift is maximized, the spin-orbit Stark parameter is four orders of magnitude larger than in silicon. At select orientations a hyperfine Stark effect was also resolved and is an order of magnitude larger than in silicon. We report the Stark parameters for $^{75}$As and $^{31}$P donor electrons and compare them to the available theory. Our data reveal that $^{31}$P donors in germanium can be tuned by at least four times the ensemble linewidth making germanium an appealing new host material for spin qubits that offers major advantages over silicon.

Double-beta decay investigation with highly pure enriched $^{82}$Se for the LUCIFER experiment

The LUCIFER project aims at deploying the first array of enriched scintillating bolometers for the investigation of neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{82}$Se. The matrix which embeds the source is an array of ZnSe crystals, where enriched $^{82}$Se is used as decay isotope. The radiopurity of the initial components employed for manufacturing crystals, that can be operated as bolometers, is crucial for achieving a null background level in the region of interest for double-beta decay investigations. In this work, we evaluated the radioactive content in 2.5 kg of 96.3\% enriched $^{82}$Se metal, measured with a high-purity germanium detector at the Gran Sasso deep underground laboratory. The limits on internal contaminations of primordial decay chain elements of $^{232}$Th, $^{238}$U and $^{235}$U are respectively: $<$61 $μ$Bq/kg, $< $110 $μ$Bq/kg and $<$74 $μ$Bq/kg at 90\% C.L.. The extremely low-background conditions in which the measurement was carried out and the high radiopurity of the $^{82}$Se allowed us to establish the most stringent lower limits on the half-lives of double-beta decay of $^{82}$Se to 0$^+_1$, 2$^+_2$ and 2$^+_1$ excited states of $^{82}$Kr of 3.4$\cdot$10$^{22}$ y, 1.3$\cdot$10$^{22}$ y and 1.0$\cdot$10$^{22}$ y, respectively, with a 90\% C.L..

Electron spin coherence of shallow donors in natural and isotopically enriched germanium

Germanium is a widely used material for electronic and optoelectronic devices and recently it has become an important material for spintronics and quantum computing applications. Donor spins in silicon have been shown to support very long coherence times ($T_{2}$) when the host material is isotopically enriched to remove any magnetic nuclei. Germanium also has non-magnetic isotopes so it is expected to support long $T_{2}$s while offering some new properties. Compared to Si, Ge has a strong spin-orbit coupling, large electron wavefunction, high mobility, and highly anisotropic conduction band valleys which will all give rise to new physics. In this Letter, the first pulsed electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements of $T_{2}$ and the spin-lattice relaxation ($T_1$) times for $^{75}$As and $^{31}$P donors in natural and isotopically enriched germanium are presented. We compare samples with various levels of isotopic enrichment and find that spectral diffusion due to $^{73}$Ge nuclear spins limits the coherence in samples with significant amounts of $^{73}$Ge. For the most highly enriched samples, we find that $T_1$ limits $T_2$ to $T_2 = 2T_1$. We report an anisotropy in $T_1$ and the ensemble linewidths for magnetic fields oriented along different crystal axes but do not resolve any angular dependence to the spectral-diffusion-limited $T_2$ in samples with $^{73}$Ge.

Search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay of $^{130}$Te with CUORE-0

We report the results of a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in a 9.8~kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{130}$Te using a bolometric detector array, CUORE-0. The characteristic detector energy resolution and background level in the region of interest are $5.1\pm 0.3{\rm~keV}$ FWHM and $0.058 \pm 0.004\,(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 0.002\,(\mathrm{syst.})$~counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr), respectively. The median 90%~C.L. lower-limit sensitivity of the experiment is $2.9\times 10^{24}~{\rm yr}$ and surpasses the sensitivity of previous searches. We find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te and place a Bayesian lower bound on the decay half-life, $T^{0ν}_{1/2}>$~$ 2.7\times 10^{24}~{\rm yr}$ at 90%~C.L. Combining CUORE-0 data with the 19.75~kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{130}$Te from the Cuoricino experiment we obtain $T^{0ν}_{1/2} > 4.0\times 10^{24}~\mathrm{yr}$ at 90%~C.L.~(Bayesian), the most stringent limit to date on this half-life. Using a range of nuclear matrix element estimates we interpret this as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, $m_{ββ}< 270$ -- $760~\mathrm{meV}$.

First bolometric measurement of the two neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo with a ZnMoO$_4$ crystals array

The large statistics collected during the operation of a ZnMoO$_4$ array, for a total exposure of 1.3 kg $\cdot$ day of $^{100}$Mo, allowed the first bolometric observation of the two neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo. The observed spectrum of each crystal was reconstructed taking into account the different background contributions due to environmental radioactivity and internal contamination. The analysis of coincidences between the crystals allowed the assignment of constraints to the intensity of the different background sources, resulting in a reconstruction of the measured spectrum down to an energy of $\sim$300 keV. The half-life extracted from the data is T$_{1/2}^{2ν}$= [7.15 $\pm$ 0.37 (stat) $\pm$ 0.66 (syst)] $\cdot$ 10$^{18}$ y.

TeO$_2$ bolometers with Cherenkov signal tagging: towards next-generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiments

CUORE, an array of 988 TeO$_2$ bolometers, is about to be one of the most sensitive experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Its sensitivity could be further improved by removing the background from $α$ radioactivity. A few years ago it has been pointed out that the signal from $β$s can be tagged by detecting the emitted Cherenkov light, which is not produced by $α$s. In this paper we confirm this possibility. For the first time we measured the Cherenkov light emitted by a CUORE crystal, and found it to be 100 eV at the $Q$-value of the decay. To completely reject the $α$ background, we compute that one needs light detectors with baseline noise below 20 eV RMS, a value which is 3-4 times smaller than the average noise of the bolometric light detectors we are using. We point out that an improved light detector technology must be developed to obtain TeO$_2$ bolometric experiments able to probe the inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses.

Characterization of bolometric Light Detectors for rare event searches

Bolometers have proven to be very good detectors to search for rare processes thanks to their excellent energy resolution and their low intrinsic background. Further active background rejection can be obtained by the simultaneous readout of the heat and light signals produced by particles interacting in scintillating bolometers, as proposed by the LUCIFER experiment. In this framework, the choice of the light detector and the optimization of its working conditions play a crucial role. In this paper, we report a study of the performances of a Germanium bolometric light detector in terms of signal amplitude, energy resolution and signal time development. The impact of various operational parameters on the detector performances is discussed.

Development of a Li2MoO4 scintillating bolometer for low background physics

We present the performance of a 33 g Li2MoO4 crystal working as a scintillating bolometer. The crystal was tested for more than 400 h in a dilution refrigerator installed in the underground laboratory of Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). This compound shows promising features in the frame of neutron detection, dark matter search (solar axions) and neutrinoless double-beta decay physics. Low temperature scintillating properties were investigated by means of different alpha, beta/gamma and neutron sources, and for the first time the Light Yield for different types of interacting particle is estimated. The detector shows great ability of tagging fast neutron interactions and high intrinsic radiopurity levels (< 90 \muBq/kg for 238-U and < 110 \muBq/kg for 232-Th).

Performances of a large mass ZnSe bolometer to search for rare events

Scintillating bolometers of ZnSe are the baseline choice of the LUCIFER experiment, whose aim is to observe the neutrinoless double beta decay of 82Se. The independent read-out of the heat and scintillation signals allows to identify and reject alpha particle interactions, the dominant background source for bolometric detectors. In this paper we report the performances of a ZnSe crystal operated within the LUCIFER R&D. We measured the scintillation yield, the energy resolution and the background in the energy region where the signal from neutrinoless double beta decay of 82Se is expected with an exposure of 9.4 kg x days. With a newly developed analysis algorithm we improved the rejection of alpha events, and we estimated the increase in energy resolution obtained by the combination of the heat and light signals. For the first time we measured the light emitted by nuclear recoils, and found it to be compatible with zero. We conclude that the discrimination of nuclear recoils from beta/gamma interactions in the WIMPs energy region is possible, but low-noise light detectors are needed.

Double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te to the first 0$^{+}$ excited state of $^{130}$Xe with CUORICINO

The CUORICINO experiment was an array of 62 TeO$_{2}$ single-crystal bolometers with a total $^{130}$Te mass of $11.3\,$kg. The experiment finished in 2008 after more than 3 years of active operating time. Effect of SiO2 coating in bolometric Ge light detectors for rare event searches

In germanium-based light detectors for scintillating bolometers, a SiO$_2$ anti-reflective coating is often applied on the side of the germanium wafer exposed to light with the aim to improve its light collection efficiency. In this paper, we report about a measurement, performed in the temperature range 25-35 mK, of the light-collection increase obtained thanks to this method, which resulted to be of the order of 20%. The procedure followed has been carefully selected in order to minimize systematic effects. The employed light sources have the same spectral features (peaking at $\sim 630$ nm wavelength) that will characterise future neutrinoless double beta decay experiments on the isotope $^{82}$Se and based on ZnSe crystals, such as LUCIFER. The coupling between source and light detector reproduces the configuration used in scintillating bolometers. The present measurement clarifies the role of SiO$_2$ coating and describes a method and a set-up that can be extended to the study of other types of coatings and luminescent materials.

New experimental limits on the alpha decays of lead isotopes

For the first time a PbWO4 crystal was grown using ancient Roman lead and it was run as a cryogenic detector. Thanks to the simultaneous and independent read-out of heat and scintillation light, the detector was able to discriminate beta/gamma interactions with respect to alpha particles down to low energies. New more stringent limits on the alpha decays of the lead isotopes are presented. In particular a limit of T_{1/2} > 1.4*10^20 y at a 90% C.L. was evaluated for the alpha decay of 204Pb to 200Hg.

The energy resolution, evaluated at the 2615 keV gamma-line of 208Tl, is 6.3 keV FWHM. The internal radioactive contaminations of the ZnMoO4 were evaluated as <6 microBq/kg (228Th) and 27\pm6 microBq/kg (226Ra). ZnMoO4: a promising bolometer for neutrinoless double beta decay searches

We investigate the performances of two ZnMoO4 scintillating crystals operated as bolometers, in view of a next generation experiment to search the neutrinoless double beta decay of Mo-100. We present the results of the alpha vs beta/gamma discrimination, obtained through the scintillation light as well as through the study of the shape of the thermal signal alone. The discrimination capability obtained at the 2615 keV line of Tl-208 is 8 sigma, using the heat-light scatter plot, while it exceeds 20 sigma using the shape of the thermal pulse alone. The achieved FWHM energy resolution ranges from 2.4 keV (at 238 keV) to 5.7 keV (at 2615 keV). The internal radioactive contaminations of the ZnMoO4 crystals were evaluated through a 407 hours background measurement. The obtained limit is < 32 microBq/kg for Th-228 and Ra-226. These values were used for a Monte Carlo simulation aimed at evaluating the achievable background level of a possible, future array of enriched ZnMoO4 crystals.

Discrimination of alpha and beta/gamma interactions in a TeO$_2$ bolometer

TeO$_2$ crystals have proven to be superb bolometers for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay in many respects. However, if used alone, they do not exhibit any feature that allows to discriminate an alpha energy deposit from a beta/gamma one. This fact limits their ability to reject the background due to natural radioactivity and eventually affects the sensitivity of the search. In this paper we show the results of a TeO$_2$ crystal where, in coincidence with its bolometric heat signal, also the luminescence light escaping the crystal is recorded. The results show that we are able to measure the light produced by beta/gamma particles, which can be explained as due to Cerenkov emission. No light is detected from alpha particles, allowing the rejection of this background source.

Performance of a large TeO2 crystal as a cryogenic bolometer in searching for neutrinoless double beta decay

Bolometers are ideal devices in the search for neutrinoless Double Beta Decay. Enlarging the mass of individual detectors would simplify the construction of a large experiment, but would also decrease the background per unit mass induced by alpha-emitters located close to the surfaces and background arising from external and internal gamma's. We present the very promising results obtained with a 2.13 kg TeO2 crystal. This bolometer, cooled down to a temperature of 10.5 mK in a dilution refrigerator located deep underground in the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, represents the largest thermal detector ever operated. The detector exhibited an energy resolution spanning a range from 3.9 keV (at 145 keV) to 7.8 keV (at the 2615 gamma-line of 208Tl) FWHM. We discuss the decrease in the background per unit mass that can be achieved increasing the mass of a bolometer.

Potential of a next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment based on ZnMoO4 scintillating bolometers

The search for neutrinoless double beta decay probes lepton number conservation with high sensitivity and investigates the neutrino nature and mass scale. Experiments presently in preparation will cover the quasi-degeneracy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Probing the so-called inverted hierarchy region requires improved sensitivities and next-generation experiments, based either on large expansions of the present searches or on new ideas. We examine here the potential of a novel technology relying on ZnMoO4 scintillating bolometers, which can provide an experiment with background close to zero in the ton x year exposure scale. The promising performance of a pilot detector is presented, both in terms of energy resolution and background control. A preliminary study of the sensitivities of future experiments shows that the inverted hierarchy region is within the reach of the technique here proposed. A realistic phased approach program towards a next-generation search is presented and briefly discussed.

CdWO4 scintillating bolometer for Double Beta Decay: Light and Heat anticorrelation, light yield and quenching factors

We report the performances of a 0.51 kg CdWO4 scintillating bolometer to be used for future Double Beta Decay Experiments. The simultaneous read-out of the heat and the scintillation light allows to discriminate between different interacting particles aiming at the disentanglement and the reduction of background contribution, key issue for next generation experiments. We will describe the observed anticorrelation between the heat and the light signal and we will show how this feature can be used in order to increase the energy resolution of the bolometer over the entire energy spectrum, improving up to a factor 2.6 on the 2615 keV line of 208Tl. The detector was tested in a 433 h background measurement that permitted to estimate extremely low internal trace contaminations of 232Th and 238U. The light yield of gamma/beta, alpha and neutrons is presented. Furthermore we developed a method in order to correctly evaluate the absolute thermal quenching factor of alpha particles in scintillating bolometers.

To better understand the contribution of cosmic ray muons to the CUORICINO background, 10 plastic scintillator detectors were installed at the CUORICINO site and operated during the final 3 months of the experiment. From these measurements, an upper limit of 0.0021 counts/(keV kg yr) (95% CL) was obtained on the cosmic ray-induced background in the neutrinoless double beta decay region of interest. The measurements were also compared to Geant4 simulations.

Performance of ZnMoO4 crystal as cryogenic scintillating bolometer to search for double beta decay of molybdenum

Zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) single crystals were grown for the first time by the Czochralski method and their luminescence was measured under X ray excitation in the temperature range 85-400 K. Properties of ZnMoO4 crystal as cryogenic low temperature scintillator were checked for the first time. Radioactive contamination of the ZnMoO4 crystal was estimated as <0.3 mBq/kg (228-Th) and 8 mBq/kg (226-Ra). Thanks to the simultaneous measurement of the scintillation light and the phonon signal, the alpha particles can be discriminated from the gamma/beta interactions, making this compound extremely promising for the search of neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of 100-Mo. We also report on the ability to discriminate the alpha-induced background without the light measurement, thanks to a different shape of the thermal signal that characterizes gamma/beta and alpha particle interactions.

16 x 25 Ge:Ga Detector Arrays for FIFI LS

We are developing two-dimensional 16 x 25 pixel detector arrays of both unstressed and stressed Ge:Ga photoconductive detectors for far-infrared astronomy from SOFIA. The arrays, based on earlier 5 x 5 detector arrays used on the KAO, will be for our new instrument, the Far Infrared Field Imaging Line Spectrometer (FIFI LS). The unstressed Ge:Ga detector array will cover the wavelength range from 40 to 120 microns, and the stressed Ge:Ga detector array from 120 to 210 microns. The detector arrays will be operated with multiplexed integrating amplifiers with cryogenic readout electronics located close to the detector arrays. The design of the stressed detector array and results of current measurements on several prototype 16 pixel linear arrays are reported. They demonstrate the feasibility of the current concept. ***This paper does not include Figures due to astro-ph size limitations.
