Microscopic Model of Charmonium Strong Decays

Although the spectra of heavy quarkonium systems has been successfully explained by certain QCD motivated potential models, their strong decays are difficult to deal with. We perform a microscopic calculation of charmonium strong decays using the same constituent quark model which successfully describes the $c\bar{c}$ meson spectrum. We compare the numerical results with the $^{3}P_{0}$ and the experimental data. Comparison with other predictions from similar models are included.

QCD2019 Workshop Summary

The topical workshop {\it Strong QCD from Hadron Structure Experiments} took place at Jefferson Lab from Nov. 6-9, 2019. Impressive progress in relating hadron structure observables to the strong QCD mechanisms has been achieved from the {\it ab initio} QCD description of hadron structure in a diverse array of methods in order to expose emergent phenomena via quasi-particle formation. The wealth of experimental data and the advances in hadron structure theory make it possible to gain insight into strong interaction dynamics in the regime of large quark-gluon coupling (the strong QCD regime), which will address the most challenging problems of the Standard Model on the nature of the dominant part of hadron mass, quark-gluon confinement, and the emergence of the ground and excited state hadrons, as well as atomic nuclei, from QCD. This workshop aimed to develop plans and to facilitate the future synergistic efforts between experimentalists, phenomenologists, and theorists working on studies of hadron spectroscopy and structure with the goal to connect the properties of hadrons and atomic nuclei available from data to the strong QCD dynamics underlying their emergence from QCD. These results pave the way for a future breakthrough extension in the studies of QCD with an Electron-Ion Collider in the U.S.

Weak B Decays into Orbitally Excited Charmed Mesons

The BaBar Collaboration has recently reported branching fractions for semileptonic decays of the $B$ meson into final states with charged and neutral $D_{1}(2420)$ and $D_{2}^{\ast}(2460)$, two narrow orbitally excited charmed mesons. We evaluate these branching fractions within the framework of a constituent quark model in two steps, one which involves a semileptonic decay and the other one mediated by a strong process. Our results are in agreement with the experimental data.

Nucleon-to-Resonance Form Factors at Large Photon Virtualities

We present a unified description of elastic and transition form factors involving the nucleon and its resonances; in particular, the $N(1440)$, $Δ(1232)$ and $Δ(1600)$. We compare predictions made using a framework built upon a Faddeev equation kernel and interaction vertices that possess QCD-kindred momentum dependence with results obtained using a confining, symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector$\,\otimes\,$vector contact-interaction in a widely-used leading-order (rainbow-ladder) truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations. This comparison explains that the contact-interaction framework produces hard form factors, curtails some quark orbital angular momentum correlations within a baryon, and suppresses two-loop diagrams in the elastic and transition electromagnetic currents. Such defects are rectified in our QCD-kindred framework and, by contrasting the results obtained for the same observables in both theoretical schemes, shows those objects which are most sensitive to the momentum dependence of elementary quantities in QCD.

From $J/ψ$ to LHCb pentaquark

The original charmonium two-body problem, like the $c\bar c$ structure of the $J/ψ$ meson, has become more involved in the last few years with the discovery of new resonances such as the tentative molecular state $X(3872)$ or the possible pentaquark one $P_{c}(4380)^{+}$. We discuss herein how these exotic states (and others) can be described in a unified way adding higher Fock state components to the naive quark model picture. In particular, we present our theoretical results on the pentaquark states $P_{c}(4380)^{+}$ and $P_{c}(4450)^{+}$, and on the new charmonium-like resonances $X(4140)$, $X(4274)$, $X(4500)$ and $X(4700)$ that have been reported in $2016$ by the LHCb Collaboration.

From $J/ψ$ to LHCb pentaquarks

The two exotic $P_c^+(4380)$ and $P_c^+(4450)$ discovered in $2015$ by the LHCb Collaboration, together with the four resonances $X(4140)$, $X(4274)$, $X(4500)$ and $X(4700)$, reported in $2016$ by the same collaboration, are described in a constituent quark model which has been able to explain the properties of charmonium states from the $J/ψ$ to the $X(3872)$. Using this model we found a $\bar DΣ_c^*$ bound state with $J^P=\frac{3}{2}^-$ that may be identified with the $P_c^+(4380)$. In the $\bar D^*Σ_c$ channel we found three possible candidates for the $P_c^+(4450)$ with $J^P=\frac{1}{2}^-$, $\frac{3}{2}^-$ and $\frac{3}{2}^+$ with almost degenerated energies. The $X(4140)$ resonance appears as a cusp in the $J/ψϕ$ channel due to the near coincidence of the $D_{s}^{\pm}D_{s}^{\ast\pm}$ and $J/ψϕ$ mass thresholds. The remaining three $X(4274)$, $X(4500)$ and $X(4700)$ resonances appear as conventional charmonium states with quantum numbers $3^{3}P_{1}$, $4^{3}P_{0}$ and $5^{3}P_{0}$, respectively; and whose masses and widths are slightly modified due to their coupling with the corresponding closest meson-meson thresholds.

Puzzles in quarkonium hadronic transitions with two pion emission

The anomalously large rates of some hadronic transitions from quarkonium are studied using QCD multipole expansion (QCDME) in the framework of a constituent quark model which has been successful in describing hadronic phenomenology. The hybrid intermediate states needed in the QCDME method are calculated in a natural extension of our constituent quark model based on the Quark Confining String (QCS) scheme. Some of the anomalies are explained due to the presence of an hybrid state with a mass near the mass of the decaying resonance whereas other are justified by the presence of molecular components in the wave function. Some unexpected results are pointed out.

Improved determination of Heavy Quarkonium magnetic dipole transitions in pNRQCD

We compute the magnetic dipole transitions between low lying Heavy Quarkonium states in a model independent way. We use the weak-coupling version of the effective field theory named potential NRQCD with the static potential exactly incorporated in the leading order Hamiltonian. The precision we reach is $k_γ^3/m^2\times{\cal O}(α_s^2,v^2)$ and $k_γ^3/m^2\times{\cal O}(v^4)$ for the allowed and forbidden transitions respectively. We also resum the large logarithms associated to the heavy quark mass scale. The specific transitions considered in this paper are the following: $Υ(1S) \to η_b(1S)\,γ$, $J/ψ(1S) \to η_c(1S)\,γ$, $h_b(1P) \to χ_{b0,1}(1P)\,γ$, $χ_{b2}(1P) \to h_b(1P)\,γ$, $Υ(2S) \to η_b(2S)\,γ$, $Υ(2S) \to η_b(1S)\,γ$ and $η_b(2S)\toΥ(1S)\,γ$. The effect of the new power counting is found to be large and the exact treatment of the soft logarithms of the static potential makes the factorization scale dependence much smaller. The convergence for the $b\bar b$ ground state is quite good, and also quite reasonable for the $c\bar c$ ground state and the $b\bar b$ 1P state. For all of them we give solid predictions. For the 2S decays the situation is less conclusive, yet our results are perfectly consistent with existing data, as the previous disagreement with experiment for the $Υ(2S) \to η_b(1S)\,γ$ decay fades away. We also profit to compute some expectation values like the electromagnetic radius, r^2, or p^2. We find r^2 to be nicely convergent in all cases, whereas the convergence of p^2 is typically worse.

B decays into radially excited charmed mesons

It has been recently argued that some longstanding problems in semileptonic B decays can be solved provided the branching ratio for the $B\to D^{\prime(\ast)}$ semileptonic decays are large enough. We have studied these decays in a constituent quark model which has been successful in describing semileptonic and non-leptonic B decays into orbitally excited charmed mesons. Our results do not confirm the hypothesis of large branching ratios for the $B\to D^{\prime(\ast)}$ semileptonic decays. In addition, we calculate the non-leptonic $B\to D'π$ decays which can provide an independent test of the form factors involved in the $B\to D^{\prime(\ast)}$ reactions.

Constituent quark model description of charmonium phenomenology

We review how quark models are able to describe the phenomenology of the charm meson sector. The spectroscopy and decays of charmonium and open charm mesons are described in a particular quark model and compared with the data and the results of other existing models in the literature. A quite reasonable global description of the heavy meson spectra is reached. A new assignment of the $ψ(4415)$ resonance as a 3D state leaving aside the 4S state to the X(4360) is tested through the analysis of the resonance structure in $e^{+}e^{-}$ exclusive reactions around the $ψ(4415)$ energy region. We make tentative assignments of some of the $XYZ$ mesons. To elucidate the structure of the $1^{+}$ $c\bar{s}$ states, i.e. $D_{s1}(2460)$ and $D_{s1}(2536)$, we study the strong decay properties of the $D_{s1}(2536)$ meson. We also perform a calculation of the branching fractions for the semileptonic decays of $B$ and $B_{s}$ mesons into final states containing orbitally excited charmed and charmed-strange mesons, which have become a very important source of information about the structure of heavy mesons. Analysis of the nonleptonic $B$ meson decays into $D^{(\ast)}D_{sJ}$ are also included.

Strong charmonium decays in a microscopic model

Although the spectra of heavy quarkonium systems have been successfully explained by certain QCD motivated potential models, their strong decays are still an open problem. We perform a microscopic calculation of vector charmonium strong decays into open-charm mesons where the $q\bar{q}$ pairs are created from the same interquark interactions acting in the quark model that has been used to describe its spectrum, and also its leptonic and radiative decays. We compare the numerical results with those predicted by the $^{3}P_{0}$ decay model and with the available experimental data, and discuss the possible influence on the strong widths of the different terms of the potential. A comparison with other predictions from similar microscopic decay models is also included.

Nonleptonic $B \to D^{(*)}D_{sJ}^{(*)}$ decays and the nature of the orbitally excited charmed-strange mesons

The Belle Collaboration has recently reported a study of the decays $B \to D_{s1}(2536)^{+}\bar{D}^{(\ast)}$ and has given also estimates of relevant ratios between branching fractions of decays $B \to D^{(\ast)}D_{sJ}^{(\ast)}$ providing important information to check the structure of the $D_{s0}^{\ast}(2317)$, $D_{s1}(2460)$ and $D_{s1}(2536)$ mesons. The disagreement between experimental data and Heavy Quark Symmetry has been used as an indication that $D_{s0}^{\ast}(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$ mesons could have a more complex structure than the canonical $c\bar{s}$ one. We analyze these ratios within the framework of a constituent quark model, which allows us to incorporate the effects given by finite $c$-quark mass corrections. Our findings are that while the $D_{s1}(2460)$ meson could have a sizable non-$q\bar{q}$ component, the $D_{s0}^{\ast}(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2536)$ mesons seem to be well described by a pure $q\bar{q}$ structure.

Scaling of the 3P0 strength in heavy meson strong decays

The phenomenological 3P0 decay model has been extensively applied to calculate meson strong decays. The strength γ of the decay interaction is regarded as a free flavor independent constant and is fitted to the data. We calculate through the 3P0 model the total strong decay widths of the mesons which belong to charmed, charmed-strange, hidden charm and hidden bottom sectors. The wave function of the mesons involved in the strong decays are given by a constituent quark model that describes well the meson phenomenology from the light to the heavy quark sector. A global fit of the experimental data shows that, contrarily to the usual wisdom, the γ depends on the reduced mass of the quark-antiquark pair in the decaying meson. With this scale-dependent strength γ, we are able to predict the decay width of orbitally excited B mesons not included in the fit.

Renormalization approach to constituent quark models of Quarkonium

Constituent quark models, while successful, require a great deal of fine tuning of the short distance interactions by introducing phenomenological gluonic form factors which are ultimately designed to accurately reproduce the spectrum. We apply and develop renormalization ideas to reduce the short distance sensitivity and show that, as naively expected, but not explicitly implemented in the models, the physics of binding is entirely linked to the string tension whereas leptonic decays depend more on the gluon exchange potential. We also show how the spectrum of S- and D- $1^{--}$ states is successfully intertwined through the singular tensor interaction.

Semileptonic $B$ and $B_{s}$ decays into orbitally excited charmed mesons

The BaBar Collaboration has recently reported products of branching fractions that include $B$ meson semileptonic decays into final states with charged and neutral $D_{1}(2420)$ and $D_{2}^{\ast}(2460)$, two narrow orbitally excited charmed mesons. We evaluate these branching fractions, together with those concerning $D_{0}^{\ast}(2400)$ and $D_{1}'(2430)$ mesons, within the framework of a constituent quark model. The calculation is performed in two steps, one of which involves a semileptonic decay and the other is mediated by a strong process. Our results are in agreement with the experimental data. We also extend the study to semileptonic decays of $B_{s}$ into orbitally excited charmed-strange mesons, providing predictions to the possible measurements to be carried out at LHC.

A very broad X(4260) and the resonance parameters of the 3D vector charmonium state

We argue that the X(4260) enhancement contains a wealth of information on vector c-cbar spectroscopy. We discuss the shape of the X(4260) observed in the OZI-forbidden process "electron-positron into J/psi and a pair of charged pions", in particular at and near vector charmonium resonances as well as open-charm threshold enhancements. The resulting very broad X(4260) structure does not seem to classify itself as a vector charmonium resonance, but its detailed shape allows to identify new vector c-cbar states. Here, we estimate the resonance parameters of the psi(3D) state.

Coupled channel approach to the structure of the X(3872)

We have performed a coupled channel calculation of the $1^{++}$ $c\bar c$ sector including $q\bar q$ and $DD^*$ molecular configurations. The calculation was done within a constituent quark model which successfully describes the meson spectrum, in particular the $c\bar c$ $1^{--}$ sector. Two and four quark configurations are coupled using the $^3P_0$ model. The elusive X(3872) meson appears as a new state with a high probability for the $DD^*$ molecular component. When the mass difference between neutral and charged states is included a large $D^0 {D^*}^0$ component is found which dominates for large distances and breaks isospin symmetry in the physical state. The original $c\bar c(2 ^3P_1)$ state acquires a sizable $DD^*$ component and can be identified with the X(3940). We study the $B\to K π^+ π^-J/ψ$ and $B\to K D^0 D^{*0}$ decays finding a good agreement with Belle and BaBar experimental data.
