Microscopic Model of Charmonium Strong Decays

Although the spectra of heavy quarkonium systems has been successfully explained by certain QCD motivated potential models, their strong decays are difficult to deal with. We perform a microscopic calculation of charmonium strong decays using the same constituent quark model which successfully describes the $c\bar{c}$ meson spectrum. We compare the numerical results with the $^{3}P_{0}$ and the experimental data. Comparison with other predictions from similar models are included.

Weak B Decays into Orbitally Excited Charmed Mesons

The BaBar Collaboration has recently reported branching fractions for semileptonic decays of the $B$ meson into final states with charged and neutral $D_{1}(2420)$ and $D_{2}^{\ast}(2460)$, two narrow orbitally excited charmed mesons. We evaluate these branching fractions within the framework of a constituent quark model in two steps, one which involves a semileptonic decay and the other one mediated by a strong process. Our results are in agreement with the experimental data.

The exact discontinuity of a partial wave along the left-hand cut and the exact $N/D$ method in non-relativistic scattering

We first deduce the analytical continuation in the complex planes of the initial and final three-momenta of the Lippmann-Schwinger equation in coupled or uncoupled partial-wave amplitudes. This result allows us to deduce a master equation whose solution is the exact discontinuity of the on-shell partial-wave amplitudes along the left-hand cut. This equation is always a linear non-singular integral equation whose solution is fixed exclusively by the knowledge of the potential, applicable to either regular or singular potentials. The capability of calculating exactly this discontinuity allows one to settle the exact $N/D $ method in two-body non-relativistic scattering for coupled and uncoupled waves. We exemplify this new advance in scattering theory by explicitly checking the agreement between the Lippmann-Schwinger equation with the corresponding solutions of the exact $N/D$ method for some examples that involve regular and singular potentials, either attractive or repulsive.

From $J/ψ$ to LHCb pentaquark

The original charmonium two-body problem, like the $c\bar c$ structure of the $J/ψ$ meson, has become more involved in the last few years with the discovery of new resonances such as the tentative molecular state $X(3872)$ or the possible pentaquark one $P_{c}(4380)^{+}$. We discuss herein how these exotic states (and others) can be described in a unified way adding higher Fock state components to the naive quark model picture. In particular, we present our theoretical results on the pentaquark states $P_{c}(4380)^{+}$ and $P_{c}(4450)^{+}$, and on the new charmonium-like resonances $X(4140)$, $X(4274)$, $X(4500)$ and $X(4700)$ that have been reported in $2016$ by the LHCb Collaboration.

From $J/ψ$ to LHCb pentaquarks

The two exotic $P_c^+(4380)$ and $P_c^+(4450)$ discovered in $2015$ by the LHCb Collaboration, together with the four resonances $X(4140)$, $X(4274)$, $X(4500)$ and $X(4700)$, reported in $2016$ by the same collaboration, are described in a constituent quark model which has been able to explain the properties of charmonium states from the $J/ψ$ to the $X(3872)$. Using this model we found a $\bar DΣ_c^*$ bound state with $J^P=\frac{3}{2}^-$ that may be identified with the $P_c^+(4380)$. In the $\bar D^*Σ_c$ channel we found three possible candidates for the $P_c^+(4450)$ with $J^P=\frac{1}{2}^-$, $\frac{3}{2}^-$ and $\frac{3}{2}^+$ with almost degenerated energies. The $X(4140)$ resonance appears as a cusp in the $J/ψϕ$ channel due to the near coincidence of the $D_{s}^{\pm}D_{s}^{\ast\pm}$ and $J/ψϕ$ mass thresholds. The remaining three $X(4274)$, $X(4500)$ and $X(4700)$ resonances appear as conventional charmonium states with quantum numbers $3^{3}P_{1}$, $4^{3}P_{0}$ and $5^{3}P_{0}$, respectively; and whose masses and widths are slightly modified due to their coupling with the corresponding closest meson-meson thresholds.

Partners of the $X(3872)$ and HQSS breaking

Since the discovery of the $X(3872)$ the study of heavy meson molecules has been the subject of many investigations. On the experimental side different experiments have looked for its spin partners and the bottom analogs. On the theoretical side different approaches have been used to understand this state. Some of them are EFT that impose HQSS and so they make predictions for the partners of the $X(3872)$, suggesting the existence of a $J^{PC}=2^{++}$ partner in the charm sector or $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ or $2^{++}$ analogs in the bottom. In our work, in order to understand the $X(3872)$, we use a Chiral quark model in which, due to the proximity to the $DD^*$ threshold, we include $c\bar c$ states coupled to $DD^*$ molecular components. In this coupled channel model the relative position of the bare $c\bar c$ states with two meson thresholds are very important. We have looked for the $X(3872)$ partners and we don't find a bound state in the $D^*D^*$ $J^{PC}=2^{++}$. In the bottom sector we find the opposite situation where the $B^*B^*$ with $J^{PC}=2^{++}$ is bounded while the $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ is not bounded. These results shows how the coupling with $c\bar c$ states can induced different results than those expected by HQSS. The reason is that this symmetry is worse in the open heavy meson sector than in the hidden heavy meson sector.

Dominant contributions to the nucleon-nucleon interaction at sixth order of chiral perturbation theory

We present the dominant two- and three-pion-exchange contributions to the nucleon-nucleon interaction at sixth order (next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order, N5LO) of chiral perturbation theory. Phase shifts with orbital angular momentum L>=4 are given parameter free at this order and allow for a systematic investigation of the convergence of the chiral expansion. The N5LO contribution is prevailingly repulsive and considerably smaller than the N4LO one, thus, establishing the desired trend towards convergence. Using low-energy constants that were extracted from an analysis of pi-N scattering at fourth order, the predictions at N5LO are in excellent agreement with the empirical phase shifts of peripheral partial waves.

Peripheral nucleon-nucleon scattering at fifth order of chiral perturbation theory

We present the two- and three-pion exchange contributions to the nucleon-nucleon interaction which occur at next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N4LO, fifth order) of chiral effective field theory, and calculate nucleon-nucleon scattering in peripheral partial waves with L>=3 using low-energy constants that were extracted from pi-N analysis at fourth order. While the net three-pion exchange contribution is moderate, the two-pion exchanges turn out to be sizeable and prevailingly repulsive, thus, compensating the excessive attraction characteristic for NNLO and N3LO. As a result, the N4LO predictions for the phase shifts of peripheral partial waves are in very good agreement with the data (with the only exception of the 1F3 wave). We also discuss the issue of the order-by-order convergence of the chiral expansion for the NN interaction.

Puzzles in quarkonium hadronic transitions with two pion emission

The anomalously large rates of some hadronic transitions from quarkonium are studied using QCD multipole expansion (QCDME) in the framework of a constituent quark model which has been successful in describing hadronic phenomenology. The hybrid intermediate states needed in the QCDME method are calculated in a natural extension of our constituent quark model based on the Quark Confining String (QCS) scheme. Some of the anomalies are explained due to the presence of an hybrid state with a mass near the mass of the decaying resonance whereas other are justified by the presence of molecular components in the wave function. Some unexpected results are pointed out.

B decays into radially excited charmed mesons

It has been recently argued that some longstanding problems in semileptonic B decays can be solved provided the branching ratio for the $B\to D^{\prime(\ast)}$ semileptonic decays are large enough. We have studied these decays in a constituent quark model which has been successful in describing semileptonic and non-leptonic B decays into orbitally excited charmed mesons. Our results do not confirm the hypothesis of large branching ratios for the $B\to D^{\prime(\ast)}$ semileptonic decays. In addition, we calculate the non-leptonic $B\to D'π$ decays which can provide an independent test of the form factors involved in the $B\to D^{\prime(\ast)}$ reactions.

Constituent quark model description of charmonium phenomenology

We review how quark models are able to describe the phenomenology of the charm meson sector. The spectroscopy and decays of charmonium and open charm mesons are described in a particular quark model and compared with the data and the results of other existing models in the literature. A quite reasonable global description of the heavy meson spectra is reached. A new assignment of the $ψ(4415)$ resonance as a 3D state leaving aside the 4S state to the X(4360) is tested through the analysis of the resonance structure in $e^{+}e^{-}$ exclusive reactions around the $ψ(4415)$ energy region. We make tentative assignments of some of the $XYZ$ mesons. To elucidate the structure of the $1^{+}$ $c\bar{s}$ states, i.e. $D_{s1}(2460)$ and $D_{s1}(2536)$, we study the strong decay properties of the $D_{s1}(2536)$ meson. We also perform a calculation of the branching fractions for the semileptonic decays of $B$ and $B_{s}$ mesons into final states containing orbitally excited charmed and charmed-strange mesons, which have become a very important source of information about the structure of heavy mesons. Analysis of the nonleptonic $B$ meson decays into $D^{(\ast)}D_{sJ}$ are also included.

Molecular Structures in Hidden Charm Meson and Charmed Baryon Spectrum

Using a constituent quark model we study the mass and decay channels of meson meson and meson baryon structures in the charm sector. We show that the $X(3872)$ and $X(3940)$ resonances can be described as mixed charmonium-molecular states with $J^{PC}=1^{++}$, whereas the $X(3915)$ and the $Y(3940)$ can be assigned to similar mixed states with $J^{PC}=0^{++}$. In the baryon spectrum we identify the $Λ^+_c(2940)$ as a $D^*N$ molecule with $(I)J^P=(0)3/2^-$ and the recently reported $X_c(3250)$ as a $D^*Δ$ resonance with $(I)J^P=(1)5/2^-$ or $(I)J^P=(2)3/2^-$.

Nonperturbative renormalization of the chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction up to next-to-next-to-leading order

We study the nonperturbative renormalization of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) of chiral effective field theory. A systematic variation of the cutoff parameter is performed for values below the chiral symmetry breaking scale of about 1 GeV. The accuracy of the predictions is determined by calculating the $χ^2$ for the reproduction of the NN data for energy intervals below pion-production threshold. At NLO, the NN data are described well up to about 100 MeV laboratory energy and, at NNLO, up to about 200 MeV---with, essentially, cutoff independence for cutoffs between about 450 and 850 MeV.

Strong charmonium decays in a microscopic model

Although the spectra of heavy quarkonium systems have been successfully explained by certain QCD motivated potential models, their strong decays are still an open problem. We perform a microscopic calculation of vector charmonium strong decays into open-charm mesons where the $q\bar{q}$ pairs are created from the same interquark interactions acting in the quark model that has been used to describe its spectrum, and also its leptonic and radiative decays. We compare the numerical results with those predicted by the $^{3}P_{0}$ decay model and with the available experimental data, and discuss the possible influence on the strong widths of the different terms of the potential. A comparison with other predictions from similar microscopic decay models is also included.

Infinite-cutoff renormalization of the chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction at N3LO

Naively, the "best" method of renormalization is the one where a momentum cutoff is taken to infinity while maintaining stable results due to a cutoff-dependent adjustment of counterterms. We have applied this renormalization method in the non-perturbative calculation of phase-shifts for nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering using chiral NN potentials up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO). For lower partial waves, we find that there is either no convergence with increasing order or, if convergence occurs, the results do not always converge to the empirical values. For higher partial waves, we always observe convergence to the empirical phase shifts (except for the 3G5 state). Furthermore, no matter what the order is, one can use only one or no counterterm per partial wave, creating a rather erratic scheme of power counting that does not allow for a systematic order-by-order improvement of the predictions. The conclusion is that infinite-cutoff renormalization is inappropriate for chiral NN interactions, which should not come as a surprise, since the chiral effective field theory, these interactions are based upon, is designed for momenta below the chiral-symmetry breaking scale of about 1 GeV. Therefore, this value for the hard scale should also be perceived as the appropriate upper limit for the momentum cutoff.

Molecular structures in charmonium spectrum: The $XYZ$ puzzle

We study in the framework of a constituent quark model the possible contributions of molecular structures to the XYZ charmonium like states. We analyze simultaneously the $c\bar{c}$ structures and the possible molecular components in a formalism which allows us to treat channels below and above thresholds. The only molecular state found in the $1^{++}$ sector correspond to the X(3872). Molecular resonances also appear with other quantum numbers. So, the so called Y(3940) and the X(3915) are suggested to be $J^{PC}=0^{++}$ charmonium states. In the $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ sector we also found significant contributions of the molecular structures which can affect the phenomenology.

Nonleptonic $B \to D^{(*)}D_{sJ}^{(*)}$ decays and the nature of the orbitally excited charmed-strange mesons

The Belle Collaboration has recently reported a study of the decays $B \to D_{s1}(2536)^{+}\bar{D}^{(\ast)}$ and has given also estimates of relevant ratios between branching fractions of decays $B \to D^{(\ast)}D_{sJ}^{(\ast)}$ providing important information to check the structure of the $D_{s0}^{\ast}(2317)$, $D_{s1}(2460)$ and $D_{s1}(2536)$ mesons. The disagreement between experimental data and Heavy Quark Symmetry has been used as an indication that $D_{s0}^{\ast}(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$ mesons could have a more complex structure than the canonical $c\bar{s}$ one. We analyze these ratios within the framework of a constituent quark model, which allows us to incorporate the effects given by finite $c$-quark mass corrections. Our findings are that while the $D_{s1}(2460)$ meson could have a sizable non-$q\bar{q}$ component, the $D_{s0}^{\ast}(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2536)$ mesons seem to be well described by a pure $q\bar{q}$ structure.

Quark model description of the Λ_c(2940)^+ as a molecular D^*N state and the possible existence of the Λ_b(6248)

The Λ_c(2940)^+ baryon is studied in a constituent quark model as a molecular state composed by nucleons and D^* mesons. A bound state with the right binding energy is found for the J^π=3/2^- channel. The partial widths Λ_c(2940)^+\to ND and Λ_c(2940)^+\to Σ_c πare calculated and the results are consistent with the experimental data. Additionally a bottom partner \bar B^*N is predicted with a mass of 6248 MeV/c^2.

Recent Progress in the Theory of Nuclear Forces

During the past two decades, it has been demonstrated that chiral effective field theory represents a powerful tool to deal with nuclear forces in a systematic and model-independent way. Two-, three-, and four-nucleon forces have been derived up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) and (partially) applied in nuclear few- and many-body systems---with, in general, a good deal of success. This may suggest that we are finally done with the nuclear force problem; but that would be too optimistic. There are still some pretty basic open issues that have been swept under rug and, finally, need our full attention, like the proper renormalization of the two-nucleon potential. Moreover, the order-by-order convergence of the many-body force contributions is at best obscure at this time.

Scaling of the 3P0 strength in heavy meson strong decays

The phenomenological 3P0 decay model has been extensively applied to calculate meson strong decays. The strength γ of the decay interaction is regarded as a free flavor independent constant and is fitted to the data. We calculate through the 3P0 model the total strong decay widths of the mesons which belong to charmed, charmed-strange, hidden charm and hidden bottom sectors. The wave function of the mesons involved in the strong decays are given by a constituent quark model that describes well the meson phenomenology from the light to the heavy quark sector. A global fit of the experimental data shows that, contrarily to the usual wisdom, the γ depends on the reduced mass of the quark-antiquark pair in the decaying meson. With this scale-dependent strength γ, we are able to predict the decay width of orbitally excited B mesons not included in the fit.

Molecular effects in Charmonium Spectrum

We study the influence of possible molecular structures in the charmonium spectrum. We focus on the $0^{++}$ and $1^{--}$ sectors. In the first one we coupled the $2 ^3P_0$ $q\bar q$ pair with $DD$, $J/ψω$, $D_sD_s$ and $J/ψϕ$ channels and we obtain two states compatibles with the X(3945) and the Y(3940). In the second one we include the $3^3S_1$ and $2^3D_1$ charmonium states coupled to $DD$, $DD^*$, $D^*D^*$, $D_sD_s$, $D_sD_s^*$ and $D_s^*D_s^*$. In this calculation we obtain a new molecular state that could be the G(3900) or the controversial Y(4008) and two $c\bar c$ states dressed by the molecular components assigned to the $ψ(4040)$ and the $ψ(4160)$. The two $c\bar c$ states show interesting properties and in particular they solve the strong disagreement of the decay branching ratios measured by BABAR.

Renormalization approach to constituent quark models of Quarkonium

Constituent quark models, while successful, require a great deal of fine tuning of the short distance interactions by introducing phenomenological gluonic form factors which are ultimately designed to accurately reproduce the spectrum. We apply and develop renormalization ideas to reduce the short distance sensitivity and show that, as naively expected, but not explicitly implemented in the models, the physics of binding is entirely linked to the string tension whereas leptonic decays depend more on the gluon exchange potential. We also show how the spectrum of S- and D- $1^{--}$ states is successfully intertwined through the singular tensor interaction.

Semileptonic $B$ and $B_{s}$ decays into orbitally excited charmed mesons

The BaBar Collaboration has recently reported products of branching fractions that include $B$ meson semileptonic decays into final states with charged and neutral $D_{1}(2420)$ and $D_{2}^{\ast}(2460)$, two narrow orbitally excited charmed mesons. We evaluate these branching fractions, together with those concerning $D_{0}^{\ast}(2400)$ and $D_{1}'(2430)$ mesons, within the framework of a constituent quark model. The calculation is performed in two steps, one of which involves a semileptonic decay and the other is mediated by a strong process. Our results are in agreement with the experimental data. We also extend the study to semileptonic decays of $B_{s}$ into orbitally excited charmed-strange mesons, providing predictions to the possible measurements to be carried out at LHC.

Coupled channel approach to the structure of the X(3872)

We have performed a coupled channel calculation of the $1^{++}$ $c\bar c$ sector including $q\bar q$ and $DD^*$ molecular configurations. The calculation was done within a constituent quark model which successfully describes the meson spectrum, in particular the $c\bar c$ $1^{--}$ sector. Two and four quark configurations are coupled using the $^3P_0$ model. The elusive X(3872) meson appears as a new state with a high probability for the $DD^*$ molecular component. When the mass difference between neutral and charged states is included a large $D^0 {D^*}^0$ component is found which dominates for large distances and breaks isospin symmetry in the physical state. The original $c\bar c(2 ^3P_1)$ state acquires a sizable $DD^*$ component and can be identified with the X(3940). We study the $B\to K π^+ π^-J/ψ$ and $B\to K D^0 D^{*0}$ decays finding a good agreement with Belle and BaBar experimental data.

Nuclear forces from chiral EFT: The unfinished business

In spite of the great progress we have seen in recent years in the derivation of nuclear forces from chiral effective field theory (EFT), some important issues are still unresolved. In this contribution, we discuss the open problems which have particular relevance for microscopic nuclear structure, namely, the proper renormalization of chiral nuclear potentials and sub-leading many-body forces.

Renormalization of the leading-order chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction and bulk properties of nuclear matter

We renormalize the two-nucleon interaction at leading order (LO) in chiral perturbation theory using the scheme proposed by Nogga, Timmermans, and van Kolck--also known as modified Weinberg counting. With this interaction, we calculate the energy per nucleon of symmetric nuclear matter in the Brueckner pair approximation and obtain a converged, cutoff-independent result that shows saturation, but also substantial underbinding. We find that the renormalized LO interaction is characterized by an extraordinarily strong tensor force (from one-pion exchange), which is the major cause for the lack of binding. The huge tensor force also leads to the unusually large wound integral of 40% in nuclear matter, which implies a very slow convergence of the hole-line or coupled-cluster expansion, rendering this interaction impractical for many-body calculations. In view of the unusual properties of the renormalized LO interaction and in view of the poor convergence of the nuclear many-body problem with this interaction, there is doubt if this interaction and its predictions can serve as a reasonable and efficient starting point that is improved by perturbative corrections.

Renormalization of the Off-shell chiral two-pion exchange NN interactions

The renormalization, finiteness and off-shellness of short distance power like singular interactions is discussed. We show analytically that the renormalizability of the off-shell scattering amplitude relies completely on the corresponding on-shell amplitude without proliferation of new counterterms. We illustrate the result by complementary calculations both in coordinate as well as in momentum space in the simplest 1S0 channel for chiral np interactions including Two Pion Exchange.

The nuclear force problem: Are we seeing the end of the tunnel?

Embedded in the historical context, we review recent progress in the development of nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials based upon chiral effective field theory. A major breakthrough is the construction of the first NN potential at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (fourth order) of chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). The accuracy of this potential concerning the reproduction of the NN data below 290 MeV lab. energy is comparable to the one of phenomenological high-precision potentials. Since NN potentials of order three or less of ChPT are known to be deficient in quantitative terms, the recent advances show that the fourth order of ChPT is necessary and sufficient for a reliable NN potential derived from chiral effective Lagrangians. This recent substantial progress raises hopes that we might be getting closer to a solution of the nuclear force problem at low energies that has plagued the community for more than half a century.

Accurate Nucleon-Nucleon Potential Based upon Chiral Perturbation Theory

We present an accurate nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) potential based upon chiral effective Lagrangians. The model includes one- and two-pion exchange contributions up to chiral order three. We show that a quantitative fit of the $NN$ $D$-wave phase shifts requires contact terms (which represent the short range force) of order four. Within this framework, the $NN$ phase shifts below 300 MeV lab. energy and the properties of the deuteron are reproduced with high-precision. This chiral $NN$ potential represents a reliable starting point for testing the chiral effective field theory approach in exact few-nucleon and microscopic nuclear many-body calculations. An important implication of the present work is that the chiral $2π$ exchange at order four is of crucial interest for future chiral $NN$ potential development.

Quark Model study of the NN*(1440) components on the deuteron

We present a calculation of the deuteron wave function including $NN$, $ΔΔ$, and $NN^*$(1440) channels. All the transition potentials, as well as the direct $NN$ potential, have been obtained from the same underlying quark model using standard techniques available in the literature. The calculated weights for the different channels are in agreement with previous theoretical estimations.
