Large anomalous Nernst and inverse spin-Hall effects in epitaxial thin films of Kagome semimetal Mn$_3$Ge

Synthesis of crystallographically well-defined thin films of topological materials is important for unraveling their mesoscale quantum properties and for device applications. Mn$_3$Ge, an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal with a chiral magnetic structure on a Kagome lattice, is expected to have enhanced Berry curvature around Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, leading to large anomalous Hall / Nernst effects and a large spin-Hall effect. Using magnetron sputtering, we have grown epitaxial thin films of hexagonal D0$_{19}$ Mn$_3$Ge that are flat and continuous. Large anomalous Nernst and inverse spin-Hall effects are observed in thermoelectric and spin-pumping devices. The anomalous Nernst signal in our Mn$_3$Ge films is estimated to be 0.1 $μ$V / K, and is comparable to that in ferromagnetic Fe, despite Mn$_3$Ge having a weak magnetization of ~3.5 m$μ_B$ at room temperature. The spin mixing conductance is 90.5 nm$^{-2}$ at the Py / Mn$_3$Ge interface, and the spin-Hall angle in Mn$_3$Ge is estimated to be about 8 times of that in Pt.

Multiferroic behavior confined by symmetry in EuTiO3 films

We have elucidated the spin, lattice, charge and orbital coupling mechanism underlying the multiferroic character in tensile strained EuTiO3 films. Symmetry determined by oxygen octahedral tilting shapes the hybridization between the Eu 4f and Ti 3d orbitals and this inhibits predicted Ti displacement proper ferroelectricity. Instead, phonon softening emerges at low temperatures within the pseudo-cube (110) plane, orthogonal to the anticipated ferroelectric polarization symmetry. Additionally, the magnetic anisotropy is determined by orbital distortion through hybridization between the Ti 3d and typically isotropic Eu2+ 4f. This unique scenario demonstrates the critical role symmetry plays in the coupling of order parameters defining multiferroic behaviour.

Unanticipated proximity behavior in ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructures with controlled magnetic noncollinearity

Magnetization noncollinearity in ferromagnet-superconductor (F/S) heterostructures is expected to enhance the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) according to the domain-wall superconductivity theory, or to suppress Tc when spin-triplet Cooper pairs are explicitly considered. We study the proximity effect in F/S structures where the F layer is a Sm-Co/Py exchange-spring bilayer and the S layer is Nb. The exchange-spring contains a single, controllable and quantifiable domain wall in the Py layer. We observe an enhancement of superconductivity that is nonmonotonic as the Py domain wall is increasingly twisted via rotating a magnetic field, different from theoretical predictions. We have excluded magnetic fields and vortex motion as the source of the nonmonotonic behavior. This unanticipated proximity behavior suggests that new physics is yet to be captured in the theoretical treatments of F/S systems containing noncollinear magnetization.

Magnetic Structure in Fe/Sm-Co Exchange Spring Bilayers with Intermixed Interfaces

The depth profile of the intrinsic magnetic properties in an Fe/Sm-Co bilayer fabricated under nearly optimal spring-magnet conditions was determined by complementary studies of polarized neutron reflectometry and micromagnetic simulations. We found that at the Fe/Sm-Co interface the magnetic properties change gradually at the length scale of 8 nm. In this intermixed interfacial region, the saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy are lower and the exchange stiffness is higher than values estimated from the model based on a mixture of Fe and Sm-Co phases. Therefore, the intermixed interface yields superior exchange coupling between the Fe and Sm-Co layers, but at the cost of average magnetization.
