Melting of magnetization plateaus for kagome and square-kagome lattice antiferromagnets

Unconventional features of the magnetization curve at zero temperature such as plateaus or jumps are a hallmark of frustrated spin systems. Very little is known about their behavior at non-zero temperatures. Here we investigate the temperature dependence of the magnetization curve of the kagome lattice antiferromagnet in particular at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization for large lattice sizes of up to N=48 spins. We discuss the phenomenon of asymmetric melting and trace it back to a combined effect of unbalanced magnetization steps on either side of the investigated plateau as well as on the behavior of the density of states across the plateau. We compare our findings to the square-kagome lattice that behaves similarly at low temperatures at zero field, but as we will demonstrate differently at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization. Both systems possess a flat one-magnon band and therefore share with the class of flat-band systems the general property that the plateau that precedes the jump to saturation melts asymmetrically but now with a minimal susceptibility that bends towards lower fields with increasing temperature.

Anomalous thermodynamics of a quantum spin system with large residual entropy

In contrast to strongly frustrated classical systems, their quantum counterparts typically have a non-degenerate ground state. A counterexample is the celebrated Heisenberg sawtooth spin chain with ferromagnetic zigzag bonds $J_1$ and competing antiferromagnetic basal bonds $J_2$. At a quantum phase transition point $|J_2/J_1|=1/2$, this model exhibits a flat one-magnon excitation band leading to a massively degenerate ground-state manifold which results in a large residual entropy. Thus, for the spin-half model, the residual entropy amounts to exactly one half of its maximum value $\lim_{T\to\infty} S(T)/N = \ln2$. In the present paper we study in detail the role of the spin quantum number $s$ and the magnetic field $H$ in the parameter region around the transition (flat-band) point. For that we use full exact diagonalization up to $N=20$ lattice sites and the finite-temperature Lanczos method up to $N=36$ sites to calculate the density of states as well as the temperature dependence of the specific heat, the entropy and the susceptibility. The study of chain lengths up to $N=36$ allows a careful finite-size analysis. At the flat-band point we find extremely small finite-size effects for spin $s=1/2$, i.e., the numerical data virtually correspond to the thermodynamic limit. In all other cases the finite-size effects are still small and become visible at very low temperatures. In a sizeable parameter region around the flat-band point the former massively degenerate ground-state manifold acts as a large manifold of low-lying excitations leading to extraordinary thermodynamic properties at the transition point as well as in its vicinity such as an additional low-temperature maximum in the specific heat. Moreover, there is a very strong influence of the magnetic field on the low-temperature thermodynamics including an enhanced magnetocaloric effect.

Frustrated magnetism of spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond and octahedral chains as a statistical-mechanical monomer-dimer problem

It is evidenced that effective lattice-gas models of hard-core monomers and dimers afford a proper description of low-temperature features of spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond and octahedral chains. Besides monomeric particles assigned within the localized-magnon theory to bound one- and two-magnon eigenstates, the effective monomer-dimer lattice-gas model additionally includes dimeric particles assigned to a singlet-tetramer (singlet-hexamer) state as a cornerstone of dimer-tetramer (tetramer-hexamer) ground state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond (octahedral) chain. A feasibility of the effective description is confirmed through the exact diagonalization and finite-temperature Lanczos methods. Both quantum spin chains display rich ground-state phase diagrams including discontinuous as well as continuous field-driven phase transitions, whereby the specific heat shows in vicinity of the former phase transitions an extraordinary low-temperature peak coming from a highly-degenerate manifold of low-lying excitations.

Accuracy of the finite-temperature Lanczos method compared to simple typicality-based estimates

We study trace estimators for equilibrium thermodynamic observables that rely on the idea of typicality and derivatives thereof such as the finite-temperature Lanczos method (FTLM). As numerical examples quantum spin systems are studied. Our initial aim was to identify pathological examples or circumstances, such as strong frustration or unusual densities of states, where these methods could fail. Instead we failed with the attempt. All investigated systems allow such approximations, only at temperatures of the order of the lowest energy gap the convergence is somewhat slower in the number of random vectors over which observables are averaged.

Finite-size scaling of typicality-based estimates

According to the concept of typicality, an ensemble average can be accurately approximated by an expectation value with respect to a single pure state drawn at random from a high-dimensional Hilbert space. This random-vector approximation, or trace estimator, provides a powerful approach to, e.g., thermodynamic quantities for systems with large Hilbert-space sizes, which usually cannot be treated exactly, analytically or numerically. Here, we discuss the finite-size scaling of the accuracy of such trace estimators from two perspectives. First, we study the full probability distribution of random-vector expectation values and, second, the full temperature dependence of the standard deviation. With the help of numerical examples, we find pronounced Gaussian probability distributions and the expected decrease of the standard deviation with system size, at least above certain system-specific temperatures. Below and in particular for temperatures smaller than the excitation gap, simple rules are not available.

Magnon crystallization in the kagome lattice antiferromagnet

We present numerical evidence for the crystallization of magnons below the saturation field at non-zero temperatures for the highly frustrated spin-half kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. This phenomenon can be traced back to the existence of independent localized magnons or equivalently flat-band multi-magnon states. We present a loop-gas description of these localized magnons and a phase diagram of this transition, thus providing information for which magnetic fields and temperatures magnon crystallization can be observed experimentally. The emergence of a finite-temperature continuous transition to a magnon-crystal is expected to be generic for spin models in dimension $D>1$ where flat-band multi-magnon ground states break translational symmetry.

The delta-chain with ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions in applied magnetic field

We study the thermodynamics of the delta-chain with competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions in an external magnetic field which generalizes the field-free case studied previously. This model plays an important role for the recently synthesized compound Fe$_{10}$Gd$_{10}$ which is nearly quantum critical. The classical version of the model is solved exactly and explicit analytical results for the low-temperature thermodynamics are obtained. The spin-$s$ quantum model is studied using exact diagonalization and finite-temperature Lanzos techniques. Particular attention is focused on the magnetization and the susceptibility. The magnetization of the classical model in the ferromagnetic part of the phase diagram defines the universal scaling function which is valid for the quantum model. The dependence of the susceptibility on the spin quantum number $s$ at the critical point between the ferro- and ferrimagnetic phases is studied and the relation to Fe$_{10}$Gd$_{10}$ is discussed.

Ground-State Ordering of the $J_1$--$J_2$ Model on the Simple Cubic and Body-Centered Cubic Lattices

The $J_1$--$J_2$ Heisenberg model is a "canonical" model in the field of quantum magnetism in order to study the interplay between frustration and quantum fluctuations as well as quantum phase transitions driven by frustration. Here we apply the Coupled Cluster Method (CCM) to study the spin-half $J_1$--$J_2$ model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor bonds $J_1 >0$ and next-nearest-neighbor bonds $J_2 >0$ for the simple cubic (SC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) lattices. In particular, we wish to study the ground-state ordering of these systems as a function of the frustration parameter $p=z_2J_2/z_1J_1$, where $z_1$ ($z_2$) is the number of nearest (next-nearest) neighbors. We wish to determine the positions of the phase transitions using the CCM and we aim to resolve the nature of the phase transition points. We consider the ground-state energy, order parameters, spin-spin correlation functions as well as the spin stiffness in order to determine the ground-state phase diagrams of these models. We find a direct first-order phase transition at a value of $p = 0.528$ from a state of nearest-neighbor Néel order to next-nearest-neighbor Néel order for the BCC lattice. For the SC lattice the situation is more subtle. CCM results for the energy, the order parameter, the spin-spin correlation functions and the spin stiffness indicate that there is no direct first-order transition between ground-state phases with magnetic long-range order, rather it is more likely that two phases with antiferromagnetic long-range are separated by a narrow region of a spin-liquid like quantum phase around $p=0.55$. Thus the strong frustration present in the $J_1$--$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the SC lattice may open a window for an unconventional quantum ground state in this three-dimensional spin model.

Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors

We show the possibility of long-range ferrimagnetic ordering with a saturation magnetisation of the order of 1 Bohr magneton per spin for arbitrarily low concentration of magnetic impurities in semiconductors, provided that the impurities form a superstructure satisfying the conditions of the Lieb-Mattis theorem. Explicit examples of such superstructures are given for the wurtzite lattice, and the temperature of ferrimagnetic transition is estimated from a high-temperature expansion. Exact diagonalization studies show that small fragments of the structure exhibit enhanced magnetic response and isotropic superparamagnetism at low temperatures. A quantum transition in a high magnetic field is considered and similar superstructures in cubic semiconductors are discussed as well.

Magnetic behavior of volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2(H2O)2 determined by coupled trimers rather than frustrated chains

Motivated by recent experiments on volborthite single crystals showing a wide 1/3-magnetization plateau, we perform microscopic modeling by means of density functional theory (DFT) with the single-crystal structural data as a starting point. Using DFT+U, we find four leading magnetic exchanges: antiferromagnetic J and J2, as well as ferromagnetic J' and J1. Simulations of the derived spin Hamiltonian show good agreement with the experimental low-field magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization data. The 1/3-plateau phase pertains to polarized magnetic trimers formed by strong J bonds. An effective J$\rightarrow\infty$ model shows a tendency towards condensation of magnon bound states preceding the plateau phase.

MICADO: first light imager for the E-ELT

MICADO will equip the E-ELT with a first light capability for diffraction limited imaging at near-infrared wavelengths. The instrument's observing modes focus on various flavours of imaging, including astrometric, high contrast, and time resolved. There is also a single object spectroscopic mode optimised for wavelength coverage at moderately high resolution. This contribution provides an overview of the key functionality of the instrument, outlining the scientific rationale for its observing modes. The interface between MICADO and the adaptive optics system MAORY that feeds it is summarised. The design of the instrument is discussed, focussing on the optics and mechanisms inside the cryostat, together with a brief overview of the other key sub-systems.

Quantum magnetism in two dimensions: From semi-classical Néel order to magnetic disorder

This is a review of ground-state features of the s=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on two-dimensional lattices. A central issue is the interplay of lattice topology (e.g. coordination number, non-equivalent nearest-neighbor bonds, geometric frustration) and quantum fluctuations and their impact on possible long-range order. This article presents a unified summary of all 11 two-dimensional uniform Archimedean lattices which include e.g. the square, triangular and kagome lattice. We find that the ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is likely to be semi-classically ordered in most cases. However, the interplay of geometric frustration and quantum fluctuations gives rise to a quantum paramagnetic ground state without semi-classical long-range order on two lattices which are precisely those among the 11 uniform Archimedean lattices with a highly degenerate ground state in the classical limit. The first one is the famous kagome lattice where many low-lying singlet excitations are known to arise in the spin gap. The second lattice is called star lattice and has a clear gap to all excitations. Modification of certain bonds leads to quantum phase transitions which are also discussed briefly. Furthermore, we discuss the magnetization process of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the 11 Archimedean lattices, focusing on anomalies like plateaus and a magnetization jump just below the saturation field. As an illustration we discuss the two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland model which is used to describe SrCu2(BO3)2.

Frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice: Spin gap and low-energy parameters

We use the coupled cluster method implemented to high orders of approximation to investigate the frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $J_{1}$--$J_{2}$--$J_{3}$ antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice with isotropic Heisenberg interactions of strength $J_{1} > 0$ between nearest-neighbor pairs, $J_{2}>0$ between next-nearest-neighbor pairs, and $J_{3}>0$ between next-next-neareast-neighbor pairs of spins. In particular, we study both the ground-state (GS) and lowest-lying triplet excited-state properties in the case $J_{3}=J_{2} \equiv κJ_{1}$, in the window $0 \leq κ\leq 1$ of the frustration parameter, which includes the (tricritical) point of maximum classical frustration at $κ_{\rm cl} = \frac{1}{2}$. We present GS results for the spin stiffness, $ρ_{s}$, and the zero-field uniform magnetic susceptibility, $χ$, which complement our earlier results for the GS energy per spin, $E/N$, and staggered magnetization, $M$, to yield a complete set of accurate low-energy parameters for the model. Our results all point towards a phase diagram containing two quasiclassical antiferromagnetic phases, one with Néel order for $κ< κ_{c_{1}}$, and the other with collinear striped order for $κ> κ_{c_{2}}$. The results for both $χ$ and the spin gap $Δ$ provide compelling evidence for a quantum paramagnetic phase that is gapped over a considerable portion of the intermediate region $κ_{c_{1}} < κ< κ_{c_{2}}$, especially close to the two quantum critical points at $κ_{c_{1}}$ and $κ_{c_{2}}$. Each of our fully independent sets of results for the low-energy parameters is consistent with the values $κ_{c_{1}} = 0.45 \pm 0.02$ and $κ_{c_{2}} = 0.60 \pm 0.02$, and with the transition at $κ_{c_{1}}$ being of continuous (and probably of the deconfined) type and that at $κ_{c_{2}}$ being of first-order type.

Ground-state properties of the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with arbitrary spin quantum number $s$

We apply the coupled cluster method to high orders of approximation and exact diagonalizations to study the ground-state properties of the triangular-lattice spin-$s$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We calculate the fundamental ground-state quantities, namely, the energy $e_0$, the sublattice magnetization $M_{\rm sub}$, the in-plane spin stiffness $ρ_s$ and the in-plane magnetic susceptibility $χ$ for spin quantum numbers $s=1/2, 1, \ldots, s_{\rm max}$, where $s_{\rm max}=9/2$ for $e_0$ and $M_{\rm sub}$, $s_{\rm max}=4$ for $ρ_s$ and $s_{\rm max}=3$ for $χ$. We use the data for $s \ge 3/2$ to estimate the leading quantum corrections to the classical values of $e_0$, $M_{\rm sub}$, $ρ_s$, and $χ$. In addition, we study the magnetization process, the width of the 1/3 plateau as well as the sublattice magnetizations in the plateau state as a function of the spin quantum number $s$.

The ground-state phase diagram of the XXZ spin-s kagome antiferromagnet: A coupled-cluster study

We use the coupled cluster method to high orders of approximation in order to calculate the ground-state phase diagram of the XXZ spin-$s$ kagome antiferromagnet with easy-plane anisotropy, i.e. the anisotropy parameter $Δ$ varies between $Δ=1$ (isotropic Heisenberg model) and $Δ=0$ ($XY$ model). We find that for the extreme quantum case $s=1/2$ the ground state is magnetically disordered in the entire region $0 \le Δ\le 1$. For $s=1$ the ground state is disordered for $0.818 < Δ\le 1$, it exhibits $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ magnetic long-range order for $0.281 < Δ<0.818$, and $q=0$ magnetic long-range order for $0 \le Δ< 0.281$. We confirm the recent result of Chernyshev and Zhitomirsky (Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 237202 (2014)) that the selection of the ground state by quantum fluctuations is different for small $Δ$ ($XY$ limit) and for $Δ$ close to one (Heisenberg limit), i.e., $q=0$ magnetic order is favored over $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ for $0\le Δ<Δ_c$ and vice versa for $Δ_c < Δ\le 1$. We calculate $Δ_c$ as a function of the spin quantum number $s$.

Thermodynamics of the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg ferromagnet on the body-centered cubic lattice with arbitrary spin

We use the spin-rotation-invariant Green's function method as well as the high-temperature expansion to discuss the thermodynamic properties of the frustrated spin-$S$ $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg magnet on the body-centered cubic lattice. We consider ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor bonds $J_1 < 0$ and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor bonds $J_2 \ge 0$ and arbitrary spin $S$. We find that the transition point $J_2^c$ between the ferromagnetic ground state and the antiferromagnetic one is nearly independent of the spin $S$, i.e., it is very close to the classical transition point $J_2^{c,{\rm clas}}= \frac{2}{3}|J_1|$. At finite temperatures we focus on the parameter regime $J_2<J_2^c$ with a ferromagnetic ground-state. We calculate the Curie temperature $T_{C}(S,J_{2})$ and derive an empirical formula describing the influence of the frustration parameter $J_{2}$ and spin $S$ on $T_C$. We find that the Curie temperature monotonically decreases with increasing frustration $J_2$, where very close to $J_2^{c,{\rm clas}}$ the $T_C(J_2)$-curve exhibits a fast decay which is well described by a logarithmic term $1/\textrm{log}(\frac{2}{3}|J_1|-J_{2})$. To characterize the magnetic ordering below and above $T_C$, we calculate the spin-spin correlation functions $\langle {\bf S}_{\bf 0} {\bf S}_{\bf R} \rangle$, the spontaneous magnetization, the uniform static susceptibility $χ_0$ as well as the correlation length $ξ$. Moreover, we discuss the specific heat $C_V$ and the temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum. As approaching the transition point $J_2^c$ some unusual features were found, such as negative spin-spin correlations at temperatures above $T_C$ even though the ground state is ferromagnetic or an increase of the spin stiffness with growing temperature.

Delta chain with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions at the critical point

We investigate the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the delta chain (sawtooth chain) with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-neighbor interactions. For a special ratio between these interactions there is a class of exact ground states formed by localized magnons and the ground state is macroscopically degenerate with a large residual entropy per spin $s_0=\frac{1}{2}\ln 2$. An important feature of this model is a sharp decrease of the gaps for excited states with an increase of the number of magnons. These excitations give an essential contribution to the low-temperature thermodynamics. The behavior of the considered model is compared with that of the delta chain with both antiferromagnetic interactions.

Geometrical origin of ferrimagnetism and superparamagnetism in Fe-based double perovskite multiferroics

We show that a superstructure of antiferromagnetically interacting Fe$^{3+}$ ($S=5/2$) ions in double perovskites AFe$_{1/2}$M$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$ exhibits a ferrimagnetic ordering below $T_{fe} \approx 5.6J_1$ ($J_1/k_B \sim 50$~K), which is close to room temperature. Small clusters of the same structure exhibit a superparamagnetic behavior at $T \lesssim T_{fe}$. The possibility of formation of such clusters explains the room-temperature (superpara)magnetism in 3$d$-metal based oxides.

Magnetic susceptibility of frustrated spin-s J1-J2 quantum Heisenberg magnets: High-temperature expansion and exact diagonalization data

Motivated by recent experiments on low-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets with competing nearest-neighbor exchange coupling J1 and next nearest-neighbor exchange coupling J2 we investigate the magnetic susceptibility of two-dimensional J1-J2 Heisenberg models with arbitrary spin quantum number s. We use exact diagonalization and high-temperature expansion up to order 10 to analyze the influence of the frustration strength J2/J1 and the spin quantum number s on the position and the height of the maximum of the susceptibility. The derived theoretical data can be used to get information on the ratio J2/J1 by comparing with susceptibility measurements on corresponding magnetic compounds.

Microscopic magnetic modeling for the $S$=1/2 alternating chain compounds Na$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$

The spin-1/2 alternating Heisenberg chain system Na$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ features two relevant exchange couplings: $J_{1a}$ within the structural Cu$_2$O$_6$ dimers and $J_{1b}$ between the dimers. Motivated by the controversially discussed nature of $J_{1a}$, we perform extensive density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations, including DFT+$U$ and hybrid functionals. Fits to the experimental magnetic susceptibility using high-temperature series expansions and quantum Monte Carlo simulations yield the optimal parameters $J_{1a}$ = $-$217 K and $J_{1b}$ = 174 K with the alternation ratio $α= J_{1a}/J_{1b} \simeq$ $-$1.25. For the closely related system Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$, DFT yields substantially enhanced $J_{1b}$, but weaker $J_{1a}$. The comparative analysis renders the buckling of the chains as the key parameter altering the magnetic coupling regime. Numerical simulation of the dispersion relations of the alternating chain model clarify why both antiferromagnetic and ferrromagnetic $J_{1a}$ can reproduce the experimental magnetic susceptibility data.

The spin-1/2 square-lattice J_1-J_2 model: The spin-gap issue

We use the coupled cluster method to high orders of approximation in order to calculate the ground-state energy, the ground-state magnetic order parameter, and the spin gap of the spin-1/2 J_1-J_2 model on the square lattice. We obtain values for the transition points to the magnetically disordered quantum paramagnetic phase of J_2^{c1}=0.454J_1 and J_2^{c2}= 0.588 J_1. The spin gap is zero in the entire parameter region accessible by our approach, i.e. for J_2 \le 0.49J_1 and J_2 > 0.58J_1. This finding is in favor of a gapless spin-liquid ground state in this parameter regime.

Interplay of inter-chain interactions and exchange anisotropy: Stability of multipolar states in quasi-1D quantum helimagnets

We quantify the instability towards the formation of multipolar states in coupled spin-1/2 chain systems with a frustrating J1-J2 exchange, in parameter regimes that are of directly relevance to edge-shared cuprate spin-chain compounds. Three representative types of inter-chain coupling and the presence of uniaxial exchange anisotropy are considered. The magnetic phase diagrams are determined by Density Matrix Renormalization Group calculations and completed by exact analytic results for the nematic and dipolar phases. We establish that the residual couplings strongly affect the pitch of spiral states and their instability to multipolar phases. Our theoretical results bring to the fore novel candidate materials close to quantum nematic/triatic ordering.

Quantum s = 1/2 Antiferromagnets on Archimedean Lattices: The Route from Semiclassical Magnetic Order to Nonmagnetic Quantum States

We investigate ground states of $s$=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the eleven two-dimensional (2D) Archimedian lattices by using the coupled cluster method. Magnetic interactions and quantum fluctuations play against each other subtly in 2D quantum magnets and the magnetic ordering is thus sensitive to the features of lattice topology. Archimedean lattices are those lattices that have 2D arrangements of regular polygons and they often build the underlying magnetic lattices of insulating quasi-two-dimensional quantum magnetic materials. Hence they allow a systematic study of the relationship between lattice topology and magnetic ordering. We find that the Archimedian lattices fall into three groups: those with semiclassical magnetic ground-state long-range order, those with a magnetically disordered (cooperative quantum paramagnetic) ground state, and those with a fragile magnetic order. The most relevant parameters affecting the magnetic ordering are the coordination number and the degree of frustration present.

Thermodynamic Properties of the Anisotropic Frustrated Spin-chain Compound Linarite PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$

We present a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic study of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) $s = \tfrac{1}{2}$ frustrated spin-chain system linarite. Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, and thermal-expansion measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic phase diagram. In particular, for magnetic fields along the b axis five different magnetic regions have been detected, some of them exhibiting short-range-order effects. The experimental magnetic entropy and magnetization are compared to a theoretical modelling of these quantities using DMRG and TMRG approaches. Within the framework of a purely 1D isotropic model Hamiltonian, only a qualitative agreement between theory and the experimental data can be achieved. Instead, it is demonstrated that a significant symmetric anisotropic exchange of about 10% is necessary to account for the basic experimental observations, including the 3D saturation field, and which in turn might stabilize a triatic (three-magnon) multipolar phase.

Thermodynamics of the two-dimensional frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg ferromagnet in the collinear stripe regime: Susceptibility and correlation length

We calculate the temperature dependence of the correlation length xi and the uniform susceptibility chi_0 of the frustrated J1-J2 square-lattice Heisenberg ferromagnet in the collinear stripe phase using Green-function technique. The height chi_{max} and the position T(chi_{max}) of the maximum in the chi_0(T) curve exhibit a characteristic dependence on the frustration parameter J2/|J1|, which is well described by power laws, chi_{max}=a(J2-J2^c)^{-nu} and T(chi_{max})=b(J_2-J_2^c), where J2^c = 0.4 and nu is of the order of unity. The correlation length diverges at low temperatures as xi \propto e^{A/T}, where A increases with growing J2/|J1|. We also compare our results with recent measurements on layered vanadium phosphates and find reasonable agreement.

Decorated Shastry-Sutherland lattice in the spin-1/2 magnet CdCu2(BO3)2

We report the microscopic magnetic model for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg system CdCu2(BO3)2, one of the few quantum magnets showing the 1/2-magnetization plateau. Recent neutron diffraction experiments on this compound [M. Hase et al., Phys. Rev. B 80, 104405 (2009)] evidenced long-range magnetic order, inconsistent with the previously suggested phenomenological magnetic model of isolated dimers and spin chains. Based on extensive density-functional theory band structure calculations, exact diagonalizations, quantum Monte Carlo simulations, third-order perturbation theory, as well as high-field magnetization measurements, we find that the magnetic properties of CdCu2(BO3)2 are accounted for by a frustrated quasi-2D magnetic model featuring four inequivalent exchange couplings: the leading antiferromagnetic coupling J_d within the structural Cu2O6 dimers, two interdimer couplings J_t1 and J_t2, forming magnetic tetramers, and a ferromagnetic coupling J_it between the tetramers. Based on comparison to the experimental data, we evaluate the ratios of the leading couplings J_d : J_t1 : J_t2 : J_it = 1 : 0.20 : 0.45 : -0.30, with J_d of about 178 K. The inequivalence of J_t1 and J_t2 largely lifts the frustration and triggers long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. The proposed model accounts correctly for the different magnetic moments localized on structurally inequivalent Cu atoms in the ground-state magnetic configuration. We extensively analyze the magnetic properties of this model, including a detailed description of the magnetically ordered ground state and its evolution in magnetic field with particular emphasis on the 1/2-magnetization plateau. Our results establish remarkable analogies to the Shastry-Sutherland model of SrCu2(BO3)2, and characterize the closely related CdCu2(BO3)2 as a material realization for the spin-1/2 decorated anisotropic Shastry-Sutherland lattice.

Flat-Band Ferromagnetism as a Pauli-Correlated Percolation Problem

We investigate the location and nature of the para-ferro transition of interacting electrons in dispersionless bands using the example of the Hubbard model on the Tasaki lattice. This case can be analyzed as a geometric site-percolation problem where different configurations appear with nontrivial weights. We provide a complete exact solution for the 1D case and develop a numerical algorithm for the 2D case. In two dimensions the paramagnetic phase persists beyond the uncorrelated percolation point, and the grand-canonical transition is via a first-order jump to an unsaturated ferromagnetic phase.

Ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 square-lattice J1-J2 model with plaquette structure

Using the coupled cluster method for high orders of approximation and Lanczos exact diagonalization we study the ground-state phase diagram of a quantum spin-1/2 J1-J2 model on the square lattice with plaquette structure. We consider antiferromagnetic (J1>0) as well as ferromagnetic (J1<0) nearest-neighbor interactions together with frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction J2>0. The strength of inter-plaquette interaction lambda varies between lambda=1 (that corresponds to the uniform J1-J2 model) and lambda=0 (that corresponds to isolated frustrated 4-spin plaquettes). While on the classical level (s \to \infty) both versions of models (i.e., with ferro- and antiferromagnetic J1) exhibit the same ground-state behavior, the ground-state phase diagram differs basically for the quantum case s=1/2. For the antiferromagnetic case (J1 > 0) Neel antiferromagnetic long-range order at small J2/J1 and lambda \gtrsim 0.47 as well as collinear striped antiferromagnetic long-range order at large J2/J1 and lambda \gtrsim 0.30 appear which correspond to their classical counterparts. Both semi-classical magnetic phases are separated by a nonmagnetic quantum paramagnetic phase. The parameter region, where this nonmagnetic phase exists, increases with decreasing of lambda. For the ferromagnetic case (J1 < 0) we have the trivial ferromagnetic ground state at small J2/|J1|. By increasing of J2 this classical phase gives way for a semi-classical plaquette phase, where the plaquette block spins of length s=2 are antiferromagnetically long-range ordered. Further increasing of J2 then yields collinear striped antiferromagnetic long-range order for lambda \gtrsim 0.38, but a nonmagnetic quantum paramagnetic phase lambda \lesssim 0.38.

We use the coupled cluster method in high orders of approximation, complemented by the exact diagonalization of a lattice with 32 sites, and calculate the gs energy, magnetic order parameter, and spin-spin correlation functions. We find a quantum phase transition between regions characterized by FM order and a form of AFM ("striped") collinear order at $J^{c}_{2} \approx 0.1095 \pm 0.0005$. We compare results for the FM case (with $J_{1}=-1$) to previous results for the corresponding AFM case (with $J_{1}=+1$). While the magnetic order parameters behave similarly for the FM and the AFM models for large values of the frustration parameter $J_{2}$, there are considerable differences between them for $J_{2}/|J_{1}| \lesssim 0.6$. For example, the quasiclassical collinear magnetic long-range order for the AFM model (with $J_{1}=+1$) breaks down at $J^{c_{2}}_{2} \approx 0.60$, whereas the "equivalent" point for the FM model (with $J_{1}=-1$) occurs at $J^{c}_{2} \approx 0.11$. Unlike in the AFM model (with $J_{1}=+1$), where a plaquette valence-bond crystal phase intrudes between the two corresponding quasiclassical AFM phases (with Néel and striped order) for $J^{c_{1}}_{2} < J_{2} < J^{c_{2}}_{2}$, with $J^{c_{1}}_{2} \approx 0.47$, we find no clear indications in the FM model for an intermediate magnetically disordered phase between the phases exhibiting FM and striped order. Instead, the evidence points strongly to a direct first-order transition between the two ordered phases of the FM model.

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an anisotropic kagome lattice

We use the coupled cluster method to study the zero-temperature properties of an extended two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet formed from spin-1/2 moments on an infinite spatially anisotropic kagome lattice of corner-sharing isosceles triangles, with nearest-neighbor bonds only. The bonds have exchange constants $J_{1}>0$ along two of the three lattice directions and $J_{2} \equiv κJ_{1} > 0$ along the third. In the classical limit the ground-state (GS) phase for $κ< 1/2$ has collinear ferrimagnetic (Néel$'$) order where the $J_2$-coupled chain spins are ferromagnetically ordered in one direction with the remaining spins aligned in the opposite direction, while for $κ> 1/2$ there exists an infinite GS family of canted ferrimagnetic spin states, which are energetically degenerate. For the spin-1/2 case we find that quantum analogs of both these classical states continue to exist as stable GS phases in some regions of the anisotropy parameter $κ$, namely for $0<κ<κ_{c_1}$ for the Néel$'$ state and for (at least part of) the region $κ>κ_{c_2}$ for the canted phase. However, they are now separated by a paramagnetic phase without either sort of magnetic order in the region $κ_{c_1} < κ< κ_{c_2}$, which includes the isotropic kagome point $κ= 1$ where the stable GS phase is now believed to be a topological ($\mathbb{Z}_2$) spin liquid. Our best numerical estimates are $κ_{c_1} = 0.515 \pm 0.015$ and $κ_{c_2} = 1.82 \pm 0.03$.

The frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the checkerboard lattice: the $J_{1}$--$J_{2}$ model

We study the ground-state (gs) phases of the spin-half anisotropic planar pyrochlore (or crossed chain) model using the coupled cluster method (CCM). The model is a frustrated antiferromagnetic (AFM) $J_{1}$--$J_{2}$ system on the checkerboard lattice, with nearest-neighbor exchange bonds $J_{1}>0$ and next-nearest-neighbor bonds $J_{2} \equiv κJ_{1} > 0$. Using various AFM classical ground states as CCM model states we present results for their gs energy, average on-site magnetization, and susceptibilities to plaquette valence-bond crystal (PVBC) and crossed-dimer valence-bond crystal (CDVBC) ordering. We show that the state with Neel ordering is the gs phase for $κ< κ_{c_1} \approx 0.80 \pm 0.01$, but that none of the fourfold set of AFM states selected by quantum fluctuations at $O(1/s)$ in a large-$s$ analysis (where $s$ is the spin quantum number) from the infinitely degenerate set of AFM states that form the gs phase for the classical version of the model (for $κ>1$) survives the quantum fluctuations to form a stable magnetically-ordered gs phase for the spin-half case. The Neel state becomes susceptible to PVBC ordering at or very near to $κ= κ_{c_1}$, and the fourfold AFM states become infinitely susceptible to PVBC ordering at $κ= κ_{c_2} \approx 1.22 \pm 0.02$. In turn, we find that these states become infinitely susceptible to CDVBC ordering for all values of $κ$ above a certain critical value at or very near to $κ= κ_{c_2}$. We thus find a Neel-ordered gs phase for $κ<κ_{c_1}$, a PVBC-ordered phase for $κ_{c_1} < κ< κ_{c_2}$, and a CDVBC-ordered phase for $κ> κ_{c_2}$. Both transitions are probably direct ones, although we cannot exclude very narrow coexistence regions confined to $0.79 \lesssim κ\lesssim 0.81$ and $1.20 \lesssim κ\lesssim 1.22$ respectively.

Electron hole - phonon interaction and structural changes in La0.9Sr0.1FeO3 by temperature dependent conductivity and valence band photoemission spectros-copy

Electric conductivity and structural details of the hole-doped polaron conductor La0.9Sr0.1FeO3 (LSF10) are reported. The conductivity of a single crystal shows an exponential increase with temperature with a maxi-mum of 100 S/cm at 700 K and with activation energy of about 375 meV, and a decrease for higher temperatures that follows a power law. The exponential increase of the electric conductivity for 300 K {\leg} T {\leg} 700 is accompanied by a shift of spectral weight in the photoemission valence band towards the Fermi level, indicative of a strong electron-phonon interaction. The subsequent decrease of the conductivity for T > 700 K is accompanied by a reversible phase transformation from orthorhombic to rhombohedral symmetry. The decreasing conductivity for T > 700 K is likely due to the reduction of the iron due to oxygen loss causing a decreasing hole concentration, as evidenced by a substantial chemical shift in the Fe K-shell x-ray absorption spectra. Two additional fine structures in the conductivity data at 357 K, this is, a small temperature reversible jump in the conductivity, and at 573 K, a slight reversible increase of the polaron activation energy, are correlated with an exceptionally strong decrease in spectral valence band intensity near the Fermi level, and with the onset of a corresponding structural transition.

Saturation field of frustrated chain cuprates: broad regions of predominant interchain coupling

An efficient and precise thermodynamic method to extract the interchain coupling (IC) of spatially anisotropic 2D or 3D spin-1/2 systems from their empirical saturation field H_s (T=0) is proposed. Using density-matrix renormalization group, hard-core boson, and spin-wave theory we study how H_s is affected by an antiferromagnetic (AFM) IC between frustrated chains described in the J_1-J_2-spin model with ferromagnetic 1st and AFM 2nd neighbor in-chain exchange. A complex 3D-phase diagram has been found. For Li2CuO2 and Y2Ca2Cu5O10, we show that H_s is solely determined by the IC and predict H_s approx 61 T for the latter.Using H_s approx 55 T from our high-field pulsed measurements one reads out a weak IC for Li2CuO2 close to that from neutron scattering.

The frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice: A candidate for deconfined quantum criticality

We study the ground-state (gs) phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$-$J_{3}$ antiferromagnet with $J_{2} = J_{3} =κJ_1$ on the honeycomb lattice, using coupled-cluster theory and exact diagonalization methods. We present results for the gs energy, magnetic order parameter, spin-spin correlation function, and plaquette valence-bond crystal (PVBC) susceptibility. We find a Néel antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase for $κ< κ_{c_{1}} \approx 0.47$, a collinear striped AFM phase for $κ> κ_{c_{2}} \approx 0.60$, and a paramagnetic PVBC phase for $κ_{c_{1}} \lesssim κ\lesssim κ_{c_{2}}$. The transition at $κ_{c_{2}}$ appears to be of first-order type, while that at $κ_{c_{1}}$ is continuous. Since the Néel and PVBC phases break different symmetries our results favor the deconfinement scenario for the transition at $κ_{c_{1}}$.

The Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice with arbitrary spin: A high-order coupled cluster treatment

Starting with the sqrt{3} x sqrt{3} and the q=0 states as reference states we use the coupled cluster method to high orders of approximation to investigate the ground state of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice for spin quantum numbers s=1/2,1,3/2,2,5/2, and 3. Our data for the ground-state energy for s=1/2 are in good agreement with recent large-scale density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization data. We find that the ground-state selection depends on the spin quantum number s. While for the extreme quantum case, s=1/2, the q=0 state is energetically favored by quantum fluctuations, for any s>1/2 the sqrt{3} x sqrt{3} state is selected. For both the sqrt{3} x sqrt{3} and the q=0 states the magnetic order is strongly suppressed by quantum fluctuations. Within our coupled cluster method we get vanishing values for the order parameter (sublattice magnetization) M for s=1/2 and s=1, but (small) nonzero values for M for s>1. Using the data for the ground-state energy and the order parameter for s=3/2,2,5/2, and 3 we also estimate the leading quantum corrections to the classical values.

The J1-J2 Heisenberg model at and close to its z=4 quantum critical point

We study the frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg model with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor coupling J1<0 and antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor coupling J2>0 at and close to the z=4 quantum critical point (QCP) at J1/J2=-4. The J1-J2 model plays an important role for recently synthesized chain cuprates as well as in supersymmetric Yang Mills theories. We study the thermodynamic properties using field theory, a modified spin-wave theory as well as numerical density-matrix renormalization group calculations. Furthermore, we compare with results for the classical model obtained by analytical methods and Monte-Carlo simulations. As one of our main results we present numerical evidence that the susceptibility at the QCP seems to diverge with temperature T as chi ~ T^{-1.2} in the quantum case in contrast to the classical model where chi ~ T^{-4/3}.

The spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on two Archimedian lattices: From the bounce lattice to the maple-leaf lattice and beyond

We investigate the ground state of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet on two Archimedean lattices, namely, the maple-leaf and bounce lattices as well as a generalized $J$-$J'$ model interpolating between both systems by varying $J'/J$ from $J'/J=0$ (bounce limit) to $J'/J=1$ (maple-leaf limit) and beyond. We use the coupled cluster method to high orders of approximation and also exact diagonalization of finite-sized lattices to discuss the ground-state magnetic long-range order based on data for the ground-state energy, the magnetic order parameter, the spin-spin correlation functions as well as the pitch angle between neighboring spins. Our results indicate that the "pure" bounce ($J'/J=0$) and maple-leaf ($J'/J=1$) Heisenberg antiferromagnets are magnetically ordered, however, with a sublattice magnetization drastically reduced by frustration and quantum fluctuations. We found that magnetic long-range order is present in a wide parameter range $0 \le J'/J \lesssim J'_c/J $ and that the magnetic order parameter varies only weakly with $J'/J$. At $J'_c \approx 1.45 J$ a direct first-order transition to a quantum orthogonal-dimer singlet ground state without magnetic long-range order takes place. The orthogonal-dimer state is the exact ground state in this large-$J'$ regime, and so our model has similarities to the Shastry-Sutherland model. Finally, we use the exact diagonalization to investigate the magnetization curve. We a find a 1/3 magnetization plateau for $J'/J \gtrsim 1.07$ and another one at 2/3 of saturation emerging only at large $J'/J \gtrsim 3$.

Thermodynamics of the frustrated one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnet in a magnetic field

We calculate the low-temperature thermodynamic quantities (magnetization, correlation functions, transverse and longitudinal correlation lengths, spin susceptibility, and specific heat) of the frustrated one-dimensional spin-half J1-J2 Heisenberg ferromagnet, i.e. for J2< 0.25|J1|, in an external magnetic field using a second-order Green-function formalism and full diagonalization of finite systems. We determine power-law relations for the field dependence of the position and the height of the maximum of the uniform susceptibility. Considering the specific heat at low magnetic fields, two maxima in its temperature dependence are found.

Thermodynamics of the one-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg ferromagnet with arbitrary spin

The thermodynamic quantities (spin-spin correlation functions <{\bf S}_0{\bf S}_n>, correlation length ξ, spin susceptibility χ, and specific heat C_V) of the frustrated one-dimensional J1-J2 Heisenberg ferromagnet with arbitrary spin quantum number S below the quantum critical point, i.e. for J2< |J1|/4, are calculated using a rotation-invariant Green-function formalism and full diagonalization as well as a finite-temperature Lanczos technique for finite chains of up to N=18 sites. The low-temperature behavior of the susceptibility χ and the correlation length ξ is well described by χ= (2/3)S^4 (|J1|-4J2) T^{-2} + A S^{5/2} (|J1|-4J2)^{1/2} T^{-3/2} and ξ= S^2 (|J1|-4J2) T^{-1} + B S^{1/2} (|J1|-4J2)^{1/2} T^{-1/2} with A \approx 1.1 ... 1.2 and B \approx 0.84 ... 0.89. The vanishing of the factors in front of the temperature at J2=|J1|/4 indicates a change of the critical behavior of χ and ξ at T \to 0. The specific heat may exhibit an additional frustration-induced low-temperature maximum when approaching the quantum critical point. This maximum appears for S=1/2 and S=1, but was not found for S>1.

Comment on "Two-spinon and four-spinon continuum in a frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain" by M. Enderle et al

We show that LiVCuO4 should be described by strongly ferromagnetically coupled Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains (HAC) in sharp contrast with the effective exchange integrals Ji given in Enderle et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 104, 237207 (2010), and the main issues of that work, namely, (i) LiVCuO4 is well described by two weakly ferromagnetically coupled interpenetrating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains, (ii) the extracted exchange integrals J1, J2 agree with a previous spin-wave description (Enderle et al., Euphys. Lett. vol. 70, 237 (2005)), (iii) the spectral density of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) above 10 meV is ascribed to a 4-spinon continuum. Applying exact diagonalization and DMRG methods to fit their INS and magnetization M(H) data, supported by two independent microscopic methods (5-band Hubbard model and LSDA+U calculations), we demonstrate that LiCuVO4 exhibits strong inchain frustration with alpha =-J2/J1 < 1, i.e. strong coupling of the HAC at odds with (i). An alternative phenomenological set in accord with various experimental results is proposed. In view of the recent possible discovery of quantum-spin nematics and Bose condensation of two-magnon bound states (M. Zhitomirsky et al. arXiv:1003.4096v2 (2010), L. Svistov et al. ibid. 1005.5668v2 (2010)) in LiCuVO4 precise knowledge of the main J-values is of key importance.

Coupled frustrated quantum spin-1/2 chains with orbital order in volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2(H2O)2

We present a microscopic magnetic model for the spin-liquid candidate volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2(H2O)2. The essentials of this DFT-based model are (i) the orbital ordering of Cu(1) 3d 3z2-r2 and Cu(2) 3d 3x2-y2, (ii) three relevant couplings J_ic, J_1 and J_2, (iii) the ferromagnetic nature of J_1 and (iv) frustration governed by the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction J_2. Our model implies magnetism of frustrated coupled chains in contrast to the previously proposed anisotropic kagome model. Exact diagonalization studies reveal agreement with experiments.

Frustrated spin ladder with alternating spin-1 and spin-1/2 rungs

We study the impact of the diagonal frustrating couplings on the quantum phase diagram of a two-leg ladder composed of alternating spin-1 and spin-1/2 rungs. As the coupling strength is increased the system successively exhibits two gapped paramagnetic phases (a rung-singlet and a Haldane-like non-degenerate states) and two ferrimagnetic phases with different ferromagnetic moments per rung. The first two states are similar to the phases studied in the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder, whereas the magnetic phases appear as a result of the mixed-spin structure of the model. A detailed characterization of these phases is presented using density-matrix renormalization-group calculations, exact diagonalizations of periodic clusters, and an effective Hamiltonian approach inspired by the analysis of numerical data. The present theoretical study was motivated by the recent synthesis of the quasi-one-dimensional ferrimagnetic material Fe$^{II}$Fe$^{III}$ (trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) exhibiting a similar ladder structure.

Heat capacity uncovers physics of a frustrated spin tube

We report on refined experimental results concerning the low-temperature specific heat of the frustrated spin tube material [(CuCl2tachH)3Cl]Cl2. This substance turns out to be an unusually perfect spin tube system which allows to study the physics of quasi-one dimensional antiferromagnetic structures in rather general terms. An analysis of the specific heat data demonstrates that at low enough temperatures the system exhibits a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior corresponding to an effective spin-3/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with short-range exchange interactions. On the other hand, at somewhat elevated temperatures the composite spin structure of the chain is revealed through a Schottky-type peak in the specific heat located around 2 K. We argue that the dominating contribution to the peak originates from gapped magnon-type excitations related to the internal degrees of freedom of the rung spins.

Magnetic properties of the Hubbard model on kagome stripes

We consider the one-orbital $N$-site repulsive Hubbard model on two kagome-like chains, both of which yield a completely dispersionless (flat) one-electron band. Using exact many-electron ground states in the subspaces with $n\le n_{\max}$ ($n_{\max}\propto N$) electrons, we calculate the square of the total spin in the ground state to discuss magnetic properties of the models. We have found that although for $n<n_{\max}$ the ground states contain fully polarized states, there is no finite region of electron densities $n/{\cal{N}} <1$ (${\cal{N}}=N/3$ or ${\cal{N}}=N/5$) where ground-state ferromagnetism survives for ${\cal{N}}\to\infty$.

Quasi-1d quantum helimagnets: The fate of multipolar phases

Coupled frustrated spin-1/2 chains in high magnetic fields described within the ferro- antiferromagnetic J1-J2 Heisenberg model are studied by the DMRG, the hard core boson, and the spin wave theory approaches. Multipolar phases related to magnon bound states are destroyed (supported) by weak antiferromagnetic (ferromagnetic) interchain couplings Jic. We show that quantum spin nematics might be found for LiVCuO4 whereas for Li(Na)Cu2O2 it is prevented by a sizeable antiferromagnetic Jic. Also for Li2ZrCuO4 with a small antiferromagnetic Jic expected triatic or quartic phases are unlikely, too. The saturation field is found to be strongly affected even by a relatively small Jic.

Spiral correlations in frustrated one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg J1-J2-J3 ferromagnets

We use the coupled cluster method for infinite chains complemented by exact diagonalization of finite periodic chains to discuss the influence of a third-neighbor exchange J3 on the ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction J1 and frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction J2. A third-neighbor exchange J3 might be relevant to describe the magnetic properties of the quasi-one-dimensional edge-shared cuprates, such as LiVCuO4 or LiCu2O2. In particular, we calculate the critical point J2^c as a function of J3, where the ferromagnetic ground state gives way for a ground state with incommensurate spiral correlations. For antiferromagnetic J3 the ferro-spiral transition is always continuous and the critical values J2^c of the classical and the quantum model coincide. On the other hand, for ferromagnetic J3 \lesssim -(0.01...0.02)|J1| the critical value J2^c of the quantum model is smaller than that of the classical model. Moreover, the transition becomes discontinuous, i.e. the model exhibits a quantum tricritical point. We also calculate the height of the jump of the spiral pitch angle at the discontinuous ferro-spiral transition.

The frustrated spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg ferromagnet on the square lattice: Exact diagonalization and Coupled-Cluster study

We investigate the ground-state magnetic order of the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J1<0 and frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor exchange J2>0. We use the coupled-cluster method to high orders of approximation and Lanczos exact diagonalization of finite lattices of up to N=40 sites in order to calculate the ground-state energy, the spin-spin correlation functions, and the magnetic order parameter. We find that the transition point at which the ferromagnetic ground state disappears is given by J2^{c1}=0.393|J1| (exact diagonalization) and J2^{c1}=0.394|J1| (coupled-cluster method). We compare our results for ferromagnetic J1 with established results for the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic J1. We find that both models (i.e., ferro- and antiferromagnetic J1) behave similarly for large J2, although significant differences between them are observed for J2/|J1| \lesssim 0.6. Although the semiclassical collinear magnetic long-range order breaks down at J2^{c2} \approx 0.6J1 for antiferromagnetic J1, we do not find a similar breakdown of this kind of long-range order until J2 \sim 0.4|J1| for the model with ferromagnetic J1. Unlike the case for antiferromagnetic J1, if an intermediate disordered phase does occur between the phases exhibiting semiclassical collinear stripe order and ferromagnetic order for ferromagnetic J1 then it is likely to be over a very small range below J2 \sim 0.4|J1|.

Thermodynamics of a two-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnet

Using the spin-rotation-invariant Green's function method we calculate the thermodynamic quantities (correlation functions <S_0 S_R>, uniform static spin susceptibility χ, correlation length ξ, and specific heat C_V) of the two-dimensional spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg ferromagnet for J2 < J2^c \approx 0.44|J1|, where J2^c is the critical frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor coupling at which the ferromagnetic ground state gives way for a ground-state phase with zero magnetization. Examining the low-temperature behavior of χand ξ, in the limit T \to 0 both quantities diverge exponentially, i.e., χ\propto \exp(b/T) and ξ\propto\exp(b/2T), respectively. We find a linear decrease of the coefficient b with increasing frustration according to b=-(π/2)(J1+2J2), i.e., the exponential divergence of χand ξis present up to J2^c. Furthermore, we find an additional low-temperature maximum in the specific heat when approaching the critical point, J2 \to J2^c.

High-Order Coupled Cluster Method Study of Frustrated and Unfrustrated Quantum Magnets in External Magnetic Fields

We apply the coupled cluster method (CCM) in order to study the ground-state properties of the (unfrustrated) square-lattice and (frustrated) triangular-lattice spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnets in the presence of external magnetic fields. Here we determine and solve the basic CCM equations by using the localised approximation scheme commonly referred to as the `LSUB$m$' approximation scheme and we carry out high-order calculations by using intensive computational methods. We calculate the ground-state energy, the uniform susceptibility, the total (lattice) magnetisation and the local (sublattice) magnetisations as a function of the magnetic field strength. Our results for the lattice magnetisation of the square-lattice case compare well to those results of QMC for all values of the applied external magnetic field. We find a value for magnetic susceptibility of $χ=0.070$ for the square-lattice antiferromagnet, which is also in agreement with the results of other approximate methods (e.g., $χ=0.0669$ via QMC). Our estimate for the range of the extent of the ($M/M_s=$)$\frac 13$ magnetisation plateau for the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet is $1.37< λ< 2.15$, which is in good agreement with results of spin-wave theory ($1.248 < λ< 2.145$) and exact diagonalisations ($1.38 < λ< 2.16$). The CCM value for the in-plane magnetic susceptibility per site is $χ=0.065$, which is below the result of the spin-wave theory (evaluated to order 1/S) of $χ_{SWT}=0.0794$.

Low-temperature properties of the Hubbard model on highly frustrated one-dimensional lattices

We construct the complete manifold of {\em exact many-electron} ground states at low electron fillings and calculate the degeneracy of these states. As a result, we obtain closed-form expressions for low-temperature thermodynamic quantities around a particular value of the chemical potential $μ_0$. We discuss specific features of thermodynamic quantities of these ground-state ensembles such as residual entropy, an extra low-temperature peak in the specific heat, and the existence of ferromagnetism and paramagnetism. Thermodynamics of layered Heisenberg magnets with arbitrary spin

We present a spin-rotation-invariant Green-function theory of long- and short-range order in the ferro- and antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with arbitrary spin quantum number S on a stacked square lattice. The thermodynamic quantities (Curie temperature T_C, Néel temperature T_N, specific heat C_V, intralayer and interlayer correlation lengths) are calculated, where the effects of the interlayer coupling and the S dependence are explored. In addition, exact diagonalizations on finite two-dimensional (2D) lattices with S>=1 are performed, and a very good agreement between the results of both approaches is found. For the quasi-2D and isotropic 3D magnets, our theory agrees well with available quantum Monte Carlo and high-temperature series-expansion data. Comparing the quasi-2D S=1/2 magnets, we obtain the inequalities T_N>T_C and, for small enough interlayer couplings, T_N<T_C. The results for C_V and the intralayer correlation length are compared to experiments on the quasi-2D antiferromagnets Zn_2VO(PO_4)_2 with S=1/2 and La_2NiO_4 with S=1, respectively.

Thermodynamics of the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain

We studied the thermodynamics of the one-dimensional J1-J2 spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain for ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor bonds J1 < 0 and frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor bonds J1 > 0 using full diagonalization of finite rings and a second-order Green-function formalism. Thereby we focus on J2 < |J1|/4 where the ground state is still ferromagnetic, but the frustration influences the thermodynamic properties. We found that their critical indices are not changed by J2. The analysis of the low-temperature behavior of the susceptibility chi leads to the conclusion that this behavior changes from chi \propto T^{-2} at J2 < |J1|/4 to chi \propto T^{-3/2} at the quantum-critical point J2=|J1|/4. Another effect of the frustration is the appearance of an extra low-T maximum in the specific heat C_v(T) for J2 \gtrsim |J1|/8, indicating its strong influence on the low-energy spectrum.

Spinless fermions on highly frustrated lattices are characterized by a lowest single-particle band which is completely flat. Concrete realizations are provided by the sawtooth chain and the kagome lattice. For these models a real-space picture is given in terms of localized states. Furthermore, we find a finite zero-temperature entropy for a suitable choice of the chemical potential. The entropy is computed numerically at finite temperature and one observes a strong cooling effect during adiabatic changes of the chemical potential. We argue that the localized states, the associated zero-temperature entropy and thus also the large temperature variations carry over to the repulsive Hubbard model. The relation to flat-band ferromagnetism is also discussed briefly.

Green's-function theory of the Heisenberg ferromagnet in a magnetic field

We present a second-order Green's-function theory of the one- and two-dimensional S=1/2 ferromagnet in a magnetic field based on a decoupling of three-spin operator products, where vertex parameters are introduced and determined by exact relations. The transverse and longitudinal spin correlation functions and thermodynamic properties (magnetization, isothermal magnetic susceptibility, specific heat) are calculated self-consistently at arbitrary temperatures and fields. In addition, exact diagonalizations on finite lattices and, in the one-dimensional case, exact calculations by the Bethe-ansatz method for the quantum transfer matrix are performed. A good agreement of the Green's-function theory with the exact data, with recent quantum Monte Carlo results, and with the spin polarization of a $ν=1$ quantum Hall ferromagnet is obtained. The field dependences of the position and height of the maximum in the temperature dependence of the susceptibility are found to fit well to power laws, which are critically analyzed in relation to the recently discussed behavior in Landau's theory. As revealed by the spin correlation functions and the specific heat at low fields, our theory provides an improved description of magnetic short-range order as compared with the random phase approximation. In one dimension and at very low fields, two maxima in the temperature dependence of the specific heat are found. The Bethe-ansatz data for the field dependences of the position and height of the low-temperature maximum are described by power laws. At higher fields in one and two dimensions, the temperature of the specific heat maximum linearly increases with the field.

High-Order Coupled Cluster Method Calculations for the Ground- and Excited-State Properties of the Spin-Half XXZ Model

In this article, we present new results of high-order coupled cluster method (CCM) calculations, based on a Néel model state with spins aligned in the $z$-direction, for both the ground- and excited-state properties of the spin-half {\it XXZ} model on the linear chain, the square lattice, and the simple cubic lattice. In particular, the high-order CCM formalism is extended to treat the excited states of lattice quantum spin systems for the first time. Completely new results for the excitation energy gap of the spin-half {\it XXZ} model for these lattices are thus determined. These high-order calculations are based on a localised approximation scheme called the LSUB$m$ scheme in which we retain all $k$-body correlations defined on all possible locales of $m$ adjacent lattice sites ($k \le m$). The ``raw'' CCM LSUB$m$ results are seen to provide very good results for the ground-state energy, sublattice magnetisation, and the value of the lowest-lying excitation energy for each of these systems. However, in order to obtain even better results, two types of extrapolation scheme of the LSUB$m$ results to the limit $m \to \infty$ (i.e., the exact solution in the thermodynamic limit) are presented. The extrapolated results provide extremely accurate results for the ground- and excited-state properties of these systems across a wide range of values of the anisotropy parameter.

Marshall-Peierls sign rule for excited states of the frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We present analytical and numerical calculations for some exited states of the frustrated J1-J2 spin-1/2 Heisenberg model for linear chains and square lattices. We consider the lowest eigenstates in the subspaces determined by the eigenvalue M of the spin operator S_total^z. Because of the reduced number of Ising basis states in the subspaces with higher M we are able to diagonalize systems with up to N=144 spins. We find evidence that the Marshall-Peierls sign rule survives for a relatively large frustration parameter J2.
