Evidence for spin liquid behavior in the frustrated three-dimensional $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg garnet NaCa$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(VO$_{4}$)$_{3}$

Three-dimensional quantum spin liquids have remained elusive, hindered by reduced quantum fluctuations from larger lattice connectivity inherent to high-dimensional systems. Here, we investigate the remarkable persistence of dynamical short-range magnetic correlations in the nearly body-centered cubic garnet NaCa$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(VO$_{4}$)$_{3}$ down to $T = 50$ mK, two orders of magnitude below its Curie-Weiss temperature. Using a combination of neutron and muon spectroscopies plus numerical simulations, we demonstrate that a dynamical regime emerges, characterized by a dual response in the inelastic spectrum composed of short-live dispersive excitations and a quasi-elastic component. Strongly frustrated exchange interactions combined with subtle temperature-dependent Jahn-Teller spin-lattice effects are a plausible mechanism to explain the origin of this spin-liquid behavior.

Magnetism of the 2D honeycomb layered Na2Ni2TeO6 compound driven by intermediate Na-layer crystal-structure

The microscopic spin-spin correlations in the 2D layered spin-1 honeycomb lattice compound Na2Ni2TeO6 have been investigated by neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. The honeycomb lattice of spin-1 Ni2+ ions, within the crystallographic ab planes, are well separated along the c axis by an intermediate Na layer whose crystal structure contains chiral nuclear density distributions of Na ions. The chirality of the alternating Na layers is opposite. Such alternating chirality of the Na layer dictates the magnetic periodicity along the c axis where an up-up-down-down spin arrangement of the in-plane zigzag AFM structure is found. Besides, the above described commensurate (CM) zigzag AFM order state is found to coexist with an incommensurate (ICM) AFM state below the TN ~ 27.5 K. The ICM state is found to appear at much higher temperature ~ 50 K and persists down to lowest measured temperature of 1.7 K. Our reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) analysis divulges a two dimensional (2D) magnetic correlations (within the ab plane) of the ICM AFM state over the entire temperature range 1.7-50 K. Further, the spin-Hamiltonian has been determined by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering experiments and subsequent linear spin-wave theory analysis which reveals the presence of competing inplane exchange interactions up to 3 rd nearest neighbours consistent with the zigzag AFM ground state, and weak interplanar interaction as well as a weak single-ion-anisotropy. The values of the exchange constants yield that Na2Ni2TeO6 is situated well inside the zigzag AFM phase (spans over a wide ranges of J2/J1 and J3/J1 values) in the theoretical phase diagram. The present study, thus, provides a detailed microscopic understanding of the magnetic correlations and divulges the intertwining magneto-structural correlations.

Crystal field effects in the zig-zag chain compound SrTm$_2$O$_4$

The single ion properties of the zig-zag chain compound SrTm$_2$O$_4$ have been investigated using heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering, and polarized muon spectroscopy. Two crystal field models are employed to estimate the single ion properties; a Density Function Theory based model and an effective charge model based on the Hutchings point charge model. The latter describes our experimental results well. This model estimates an easy-axis anisotropy for one of the Tm$^{3+}$ sites and an easy-plane anisotropy for the second site. It also predicts a mixed ground state with dominating $J = 0$ characteristics for both sites. Additionally, muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ^+$SR) spectra reveal oscillations, typically a sign of long-range magnetic order. However, the temperature dependence of the precession frequency and the relaxation rates indicate that the system is in an extended critical regime and the observed relaxation is actually dynamic.

Statics and dynamics of the highly correlated spin ice Ho2Ge2O7

The pyrochlore Ho2Ge2O7 is a new highly correlated spin ice material. Physical property measurements including x-ray diffraction, dc susceptibility and ac susceptibility, confirm that it shares the distinctive characteristics of other known spin ices. Polarized neutron scattering measurements on a powder sample, combined with reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) refinements, give unique information about the spin ice state in Ho2Ge2O7. RMC refinements are used to fit the powder magnetic diffuse scattering and predict the single crystal magnetic scattering of Ho2Ge2O7, demonstrating consistency with spin ice behavior.

Competing 4f-electron dynamics in Ce(Ru1-xFex)2Al10 (x=0 to 1): magnetic ordering emerging from the Kondo semiconducting state

We have carried out muon spin relaxation (muSR), neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations on polycrystalline samples of Ce(Ru1-xFex)2Al10 (x=0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8 and 1) to investigate the nature of the ground state (magnetic ordered versus paramagnetic) and the origin of the spin gap formation as evident from the bulk measurements in the end members. Our zero-field muSR spectra clearly reveal coherent two-frequency oscillations at low temperature in x=0, 0.3 and 0.5 samples, which confirms the long-range magnetic ordering of the Ce-moment with TN=27, 26 and 21 K respectively. On the other hand the muSR spectra of x=0.8 and x=1 down to 1.4 K and 0.045 K, respectively exhibit a temperature independent Kubo-Toyabe term confirming a paramagnetic ground state. The long-range magnetic ordering in x=0.5 below 21 K has been confirmed through the neutron diffraction study. INS measurements of x=0 clearly reveal the presence of a sharp inelastic excitation near 8 meV between 5 K and 26 K, due to an opening of a gap in the spin excitation spectrum, which transforms into a broad response at and above 30 K. Interestingly, at 4.5 K the spin gap excitation broadens in x=0.3 and exhibits two clear peaks at 8.4(3) and 12.0(5) meV in x=0.5. In the x=0.8 sample, which remains paramagnetic down to 1.2 K, there is a clear signature of a spin gap of 10-12 meV at 7 K, with a strong Q-dependent intensity. Evidence of a spin gap of 12.5(5) meV has also been found in x=1. The observation of a spin gap in the paramagnetic samples (x=0.8 and 1) is an interesting finding in this study and it challenges our understanding of the origin of the semiconducting gap in CeT2Al10 (T=Ru and Os) compounds in terms of hybridization gap opening only a small part of the Fermi surface, gapped spin waves, or a spin-dimer gap.

Pair Correlations, Short Range Order and Dispersive Excitations in the Quasi-Kagome Quantum Magnet Volborthite

We present spatial and dynamic information on the s=1/2 distorted kagome antiferromagnet volborthite, Cu3V2O7(OD)2.2D2O, obtained by polarized and inelastic neutron scattering. The instantaneous structure factor, S(Q), is dominated by nearest neighbor pair correlations, with short range order at wave vectors Q1=0.65(3) Å^-1 and Q2=1.15(5) Å^-1 emerging below 5 K. The excitation spectrum, S(Q,ω), reveals two steep branches dispersing from Q1 and Q2, and a flat mode at ω=5.0(2) meV. The results allow us to identify the cross-over at T*=1 K in 51V NMR and specific heat measurements as the build-up of correlations at Q_1. We compare our data to theoretical models proposed for volborthite, and demonstrate that the excitation spectrum can be explained by spin-wave-like excitations with anisotropic exchange parameters, as also suggested by recent local density calculations.

Direct evidence of long-range ordering of reduced magnetic moments in the spin-gap compound CeOs2Al10 through muon spin relaxation investigations

We have carried out neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering investigations on a polycrystalline sample of CeOs2Al10 to investigate the nature of the phase transition observed near 29 K in the resistivity and heat capacity. Our muSR data clearly reveal coherent frequency oscillations below 28 K, indicating the presence of an internal field at the muon site, which confirms the long-range magnetic ordering of the Ce-moment below 28 K. Upon cooling the sample below 15 K, unusual behaviour of the temperature dependent muSR frequencies may indicate either a change of the muon site, consistent with the observation of superstructure reflections in electron diffraction or a change of the ordered magnetic structure. Neutron diffraction data do not reveal any clear sign of either magnetic Bragg peaks or superlattice reflections. Furthermore, inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements clearly reveal the presence of a sharp inelastic excitation near 11 meV between 5 K and 26 K, due to opening of a gap in the spin excitation spectrum, which transforms into a broad response at and above 30 K. The magnitude of the spin-gap (11 meV) as derived from the INS peak position agrees very well with the gap value as estimated from the bulk properties.
