Conceptual design of the Spin Physics Detector

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR. The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

Issues and Opportunities in Exotic Hadrons

The last few years have been witness to a proliferation of new results concerning heavy exotic hadrons. Experimentally, many new signals have been discovered that could be pointing towards the existence of tetraquarks, pentaquarks, and other exotic configurations of quarks and gluons. Theoretically, advances in lattice field theory techniques place us at the cusp of understanding complex coupled-channel phenomena, modelling grows more sophisticated, and effective field theories are being applied to an ever greater range of situations. It is thus an opportune time to evaluate the status of the field. In the following, a series of high priority experimental and theoretical issues concerning heavy exotic hadrons is presented.

Exotic Charmonium and Bottomonium-like Resonances

Many new states in the charmonium and bottomonium mass region were recently discovered by the BaBar, Belle and CDF Collaborations. We use the QCD Sum Rule approach to study the possible structure of some of these states. In particular we identify the recently observed bottomonium-like resonance $Z_b^+(10610)$ with the first excitation of the tetraquark $X_b(1^{++})$, the analogue of the X(3872) state in the charm sector.

Relation between $T_{cc,bb}$ and $X_{c,b}$ from QCD

We have studied, using double ratio of QCD (spectral) sum rules, the ratio between the masses of $T_{cc}$ and X(3872) assuming that they are respectively described by the $D-{D}^*$ and $D-\bar{D}^*$ molecular currents. We found (within our approximation) that the masses of these two states are almost degenerate. Since the pion exchange interaction between these mesons is exactly the same, we conclude that if the observed X(3872) meson is a $D\bar{D}^*+c.c.$ molecule, then the $DD^*$ molecule should also exist with approximately the same mass. An extension of the analysis to the $b$-quark case leads to the same conclusion. We also study the SU(3) breakings for the $T^s_{QQ}/T_{QQ}$ mass ratios. Motivated by the recent Belle observation of two $Z_b$ states, we revise our determination of $X_b$ by combining results from exponential and FESR sum rules.

The antinucleon-nucleon interaction at low energy : annihilation dynamics

The general properties of antiproton-proton annihilation at rest are presented, with special focus on the two-meson final states. The data exhibit remarkable dynamical selection rules : some allowed annihilation modes are suppressed by one order of magnitude with respect to modes of comparable phase-space. Various phenomenological analyses are reviewed, based on microscopic quark dynamics or symmetry considerations. The role of initial- and final-state interaction is also examined.

Heavy-Flavour Pentaquarks in a Chiral Constituent Quark Model

Within the chiral constituent quark model of Glozman and Riska, we discuss the stability of heavy pentaquarks, i.e. hadrons containing four light quarks and a heavy antiquark. The spin-dependent part of the Hamiltonian is dominated by the short-range part of the Goldstone-boson-exchange interaction. We find that these systems are not bound, having an energy above the lowest dissociation threshold into a baryon and a meson.

Multiquark Systems in a Constituent Quark Model with Chiral Dynamics

We discuss the stability of multiquark systems within the recent model of Glozman et al. where the chromomagnetic hyperfine interaction is replaced by pseudoscalar-meson exchange. We find that such an interaction binds a heavy tetraquark system $QQ\bar q\bar q$ ($Q=c, b$ and $q=u, d)$ by $0.2-0.4$ GeV. This is at variance with results of previous models where $cc\bar q\bar q$ is unstable.

Tetraquarks with colour-blind forces in chiral quark models

We discuss the stability of multiquark systems within the recent model of Glozman et al. where the chromomagnetic hyperfine interaction is replaced by pseudoscalar-meson exchange contributions. We find that such an interaction binds a heavy tetraquark systems $QQ\bar q\bar q$ ($Q=c,b and q=u,d)$ by 0.2-0.4 GeV. This is at variance with results of previous models where $cc\bar q\bar q$ is unstable.

Search for Flavoured Multiquarks in a Simple Bag Model

We use a bag model to study flavoured mesonic $(Qq\bar q\bar q)$ and baryonic $({\overline Q}qqqq)$ states, where one heavy quark $Q$ is associated with light quarks or antiquarks, and search for possible stable multiquarks. No bound state is found. However some states lie not too high above their dissociation threshold, suggesting the possibility of resonances, or perhaps bound states in improved models.
