Constituent quark-model hidden-flavor pentaquarks

We study hidden-flavor pentaquarks, $Q\bar Q qqq$, based on a constituent quark-model with a standard quark-quark interaction that reproduces the low-energy meson and baryon spectra. We make use of dynamical correlations between the heavy quarks arising from the Coulomb-like nature of the short-range interaction. A detailed comparison is made with other results in the literature and with experimental data. Our results show a different pattern for open-flavor and hidden-flavor pentaquarks, as suggested by the data. Further implications about the existence of quarkonia bound to nuclei are discussed.

$ΛΛN$-$ΞNN$ $S$ wave resonance

We use an existing model of the $ΛΛN - ΞNN$ three-body system based in two-body separable interactions to study the $(I,J^P)=(1/2,1/2^+)$ three-body channel. For the $ΛΛ$, $ΞN$, and $ΛΛ- ΞN$ amplitudes we have constructed separable potentials based on the most recent results of the HAL QCD Collaboration. They are characterized by the existence of a resonance just below or above the $ΞN$ threshold in the so-called $H$-dibaryon channel, $(i,j^p)=(0,0^+)$. A three-body resonance appears {2.3} MeV above the $Ξd$ threshold. We show that if the $ΛΛ- ΞN$ $H$-dibaryon channel is not considered, the $ΛΛN - ΞNN$ $S$ wave resonance disappears. Thus, the possible existence of a $ΛΛN - ΞNN$ resonance would be sensitive to the $ΛΛ- ΞN$ interaction. The existence or nonexistence of this resonance could be evidenced by measuring, for example, the $Ξd$ cross section.

Doubly charmed multibaryon systems

We study two- and three-baryon systems with two units of charm looking for possible bound states or resonances. All two-baryon interactions are consistently derived from a constituent quark model tuned in the light-flavor hadron phenomenology: spectra and interactions. The presence of the heavy quarks makes the two-body interactions simpler than in the light-flavor sector. Our results show a narrow two-body resonance with quantum numbers $(I,J^P)=(0,0^+)$. It is located 6.2 MeV below the $Σ_cΣ_c$ threshold and has a width of 4.7 MeV. The foregoing two-body state contributes to generate a $N Σ_cΣ_c$ resonance with quantum numbers $(I,J^P)=(1/2,1/2^+)$ and a separation energy of 0.2 MeV.

Hidden and open heavy-flavor hadronic states

We discuss the stability of hidden and open heavy-flavor hadronic states made of either two or three mesons. References are made in passing to studies regarding two and three-body systems containing baryons. We perform a comparative study analyzing the results in terms of quark and hadron degrees of freedom. Compact and molecular states are found to exist in very specific situations. We estimate the decay width for the different scenarios: weak decays for bound states by the strong interaction, and strong decays for hadronic resonances above a decay threshold. The experimental observation of narrow hadrons lying well above their lowest decay threshold is theoretically justified.

Neutral baryonic systems with strangeness

We review the status as regards the existence of three- and four-body bound states made of neutrons and $Λ$ hyperons. For interesting cases, the coupling to neutral baryonic systems made of charged particles of different strangeness has been addressed. There are strong arguments showing that the $Λnn$ system has no bound states. $ΛΛnn$ strong stable states are not favored by our current knowledge of the strangeness $-1$ and $-2$ baryon-baryon interactions. However, a possible $Ξ^- t$ quasibound state decaying to $ΛΛnn$ might exist in nature. Similarly, there is a broad agreement about the nonexistence of $ΛΛn$ bound states. However, the coupling to $ΞNN$ states opens the door to a resonance above the $ΛΛn$ threshold.

$D^*$ $ΞN$ bound state in strange three-body systems

The recent update of the strangeness $-2$ ESC08c Nijmegen potential incorporating the NAGARA and KISO events predicts a $ΞN$ bound state, $D^*$, in the $^3S_1 (I=1)$ channel. We study if the existence of this two-body bound state could give rise to stable three-body systems. For this purpose we solve the bound state problem of three-body systems where the $ΞN$ state is merged with $N$'s, $Λ$'s, $Σ's$ or $Ξ$'s, making use of the most recent updates of the two-body ESC08c Nijmegen potentials. We found that there appear stable states in the $ΞNN$ and $ΞΞN$ systems, the $ΞΛN$ and $ΞΣN$ systems being unbound.

Deeply bound $Ξ$ tribaryon

We have used realistic local interactions based on the recent update of the strangeness $-2$ Nijmegen ESC08c potential to calculate the bound state problem of the $ΞNN$ system in the $(I)J^P=(\frac{1}{2})\frac{3}{2}^+$ state. We found that this system presents a deeply bound state lying $13.5$ MeV below the $Ξd$ threshold. Since in lowest order, pure S$-$wave configuration, this system can not decay into the open $ΛΛN$ channel, its decay width is expected to be very small. We have also recalculated the $(I)J^P=(\frac{3}{2})\frac{1}{2}^+$ state and we have compared with results of quark-model based potentials.

Doubly heavy baryon spectra guided by lattice QCD

This paper provides results for the ground state and excited spectra of three-flavored doubly heavy baryons, $bcn$ and $bcs$. We take advantage of the spin-independent interaction recently obtained to reconcile the lattice SU(3) QCD static potential and the results of nonperturbative lattice QCD for the triply heavy baryon spectra. We show that the spin-dependent potential might be constrained on the basis of nonperturbative lattice QCD results for the spin splittings of three-flavored doubly heavy baryons. Our results may also represent a challenge for future lattice QCD work, because a smaller lattice error could help in distinguishing between different prescriptions for the spin-dependent part of the interaction. Thus, by comparing with the reported baryon spectra obtained with parameters estimated from lattice QCD, one can challenge the precision of lattice calculations. The present work supports a coherent description of singly, doubly and triply heavy baryons with the same Cornell-like interacting potential. The possible experimental measurement of these states at LHCb is an incentive for this study.

Hadronic molecules with a ${\bar{D}}$ meson in a medium

We study the effect of a hot and dense medium on the binding energy of hadronic molecules with open-charm mesons. We focus on a recent chiral quark-model-based prediction of a molecular state in the $N \bar D$ system. We analyze how the two-body thresholds and the hadron-hadron interactions are modified when quark and meson masses and quark-meson couplings change in a function of the temperature and baryon density according to predictions of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We find that in some cases the molecular binding is enhanced in medium as compared to their free-space binding. We discuss the consequences of our findings for the search for exotic hadrons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions as well as in the forthcoming facilities FAIR or J-PARC.

preprint2016arXiv

Hadronic resonances enhanced by thresholds

We present a neat example of a meson--baryon system where the vicinity of two different thresholds enhances the binding of a hadronic resonance, a pentaquark. As a consequence the pattern of states may change when moving among different flavor sectors, what poses a warning on naive extrapolations to heavy flavor sectors based on systematic expansions. For this purpose we simultaneously analyze the $N\bar D$ and $NB$ two-hadron systems looking for possible bound states or resonances. When a resonance is controlled by a coupled-channel effect, going to a different flavor sector may enhance or diminish the binding. This effect may, for example, generate significant differences between the charmonium and bottomonium spectra above open-flavor thresholds or pentaquark states in the open-charm and open-bottom sectors.

preprint2016arXiv

Maximal isospin few-body systems of nucleons and $Ξ$ hyperons

By using local central Yukawa-type interactions that reproduce the low-energy parameters of the latest updates of the Nijmegen ESC08c potentials we show that the $NΞ$, $NNΞ$, $NΞΞ$ and $NNΞΞ$ systems with maximal isospin are bound. Since in these states the strong decay $NΞ\toΛΛ$ is forbidden by isospin conservation, these strange few-body systems will be stable under the strong interaction. These results may suggest that other states with different number of $N$'s and $Ξ$'s in the maximal isospin channel could also be bound.

Constituent-quark model description of triply heavy-baryon nonperturbative lattice QCD data

This paper provides results for the spectra of triply charmed and bottom baryons based on a constituent quark model approach. We take advantage of the assumption that potential models are expected to describe triply heavy baryons to a similar degree of accuracy as the successful results obtained in the charmonium and bottomonium sectors. The high precision calculation of the ground state and positive and negative parity excited states recently reported by nonperturbative lattice QCD provides us with a unique opportunity to confront model predictions with data. This comparison may also help to build a bridge between two difficult to reconcile lattice QCD results, namely, the lattice SU(3) QCD static three-quark potential and the recent results of nonperturbative lattice QCD for the triply heavy-baryon spectra.

Heavy flavor dibaryons

We study the two-baryon system with two units of charm looking for the possible existence of a loosely bound state resembling the $H$ dibaryon. We make use of a chiral constituent quark model tuned in the description of the baryon and meson spectra as well as the $NN$ interaction. The presence of the heavy quarks makes the interaction simpler than in light baryon systems. We analyze possible quark-Pauli effects that would be present in spin-isospin saturated channels. Our results point to the non-existence of a charmed $H$-like dibaryon, although it may appear as a resonance above the $Λ_cΛ_c$ threshold.

Heavy-baryon quark model picture from lattice QCD

The ground state and excited spectra of baryons containing three identical heavy quarks, $b$ or $c$, have been recently calculated in nonperturbative lattice QCD. The energy of positive and negative parity excitations has been determined with high precision. Lattice results constitute a unique opportunity to learn about the quark-confinement mechanism as well as elucidating our knowledge about the nature of the strong force. We analyze the nonperturbative lattice QCD results by means of heavy-quark static potentials derived using SU(3) lattice QCD. We make use of different numerical techniques for the three-body problem.

preprint2015arXiv

J=3/2 charmed hypertriton

By solving exact three-body equations, we study the three-baryon system with charm $+1$. We look for possible bound states using baryon-baryon interactions obtained from a chiral constituent quark model. The smaller effect of the $Λ_c \leftrightarrow Σ_c$ conversion reverses the order of the $(I,J)=(0,1/2)$ and $(I,J)=(0,3/2)$ states, rather close on the strange sector. The diminishing of the kinetic energy due to the large reduced mass gives rise to a bound state in the $(I,J)=(0,3/2)$ channel. After correcting for Coulomb effects the binding energy would be between 140 and 715 keV.

preprint2015arXiv

Light $Ξ$ hypernuclei

Arguments in favor of a light $ΞNN$ hypernucleus with $(I)J^P=(3/2)1/2^+$ are presented, within the uncertainties of our knowledge of the baryon-baryon strangeness $-2$ interactions. If bound, this $ΞNN$ state, being decoupled from the lowest $NΛΛ$ system, would be stable. It will also benefit from additional binding due to the electromagnetic interaction what makes it worthwhile to look for. We show how the equivalent state with $J=3/2$ could never be bound in spite of the attractive interaction of the two-body subsystems. We illustrate our discussion with a full-fledged Faddeev calculation of the $ΞNN$ system using simple potentials that mimic more elaborate interactions. We also make contact with different recent phenomenological interactions from the literature, like the ESC08 Nijmegen potential or quark-model based potentials.

Multiquark contributions to charm baryon spectroscopy

We study possible multiquark contributions to the charm baryon spectrum by considering higher order Fock space components. For this purpose we perform two different calculations. In a first approach we do a coupled-channel calculation of the $ND$ system looking for molecular states. In a second step we allow for the coupling to a heavy baryon--light meson two-hadron system looking for compact exotic five--quark structures. Both calculations have been done within the framework of a chiral constituent quark model. The model, tuned in the description of the baryon and meson spectra as well as the $NN$ interaction, provides parameter-free predictions for charm $+1$ molecular or compact two-hadron systems. Unlike the $N \bar D$ system, no sharp quark-Pauli effects are found. However, the existence of different two-hadron thresholds for the five-quark system will make the coupled-channel dynamics relevant. Only a few channels are candidates to lodge molecular or compact hadrons with a five-quark structure, being specially relevant the $(T)J^P=(0)1/2^-$ and $(T)J^P=(2)5/2^-$ channels. The identification of molecular states and/or compact hadrons with multiquark components either with or without exotic quantum numbers is a challenge of different collaborations like $\bar {\rm P}$ANDA, LHCb, ExHIC or J-PARC.

preprint2015arXiv

Nonexistence of a $Λnn$ bound state

It has been recently suggested the existence of a neutral bound state of two neutrons and a $Λ$ hyperon, $^3_Λn$. We point out that using either simple separable potentials or a full-fledged calculation with realistic baryon-baryon interactions derived from the constituent quark cluster model there is no possibility for the existence of such a $Λnn$ bound state. For this purpose, we performed a full Faddeev calculation of the $Λnn$ system in the $(I,J^P)=(1,1/2^+)$ channel using the interactions derived from the constituent quark cluster model which describe well the two-body $NN$ and $NY$ data and the $Λnp$ hypertriton.

Unraveling the pattern of the $XYZ$ mesons

We present a plausible mechanism for the origin of the $XYZ$ mesons in the heavy meson spectra within a standard quark-model picture. We discuss the conditions required for the existence of four--quark bound states or resonances contributing to the heavy meson spectra, being either compact or molecular. We concentrate on charmonium and bottomonium spectra, where several new states, difficult to understand as simple quark-antiquark pairs, have been reported by different experimental collaborations. The pivotal role played by entangled meson-meson thresholds is emphasized.

Pion-assisted charmed dibaryon candidate

The Lambda_c(2286)-N system is studied in a chiral constituent quark model and the resulting s-wave interaction is used in separable form within three-body models of the pi-Lambda_c-N system with quantum numbers (C,I,JP)=(+1,3/2,2+). Separable interactions are also used for the dominant p-wave pion-baryon channels dominated by the Delta(1232) and Sigma_c(2520) resonances. Faddeev equations with relativistic kinematics are solved on the real axis to search for bound states and in the complex plane to search for three-body resonances. Some of the models considered generate a very narrow bound state, requiring isospin violation for its strong decay. Other models lead to a narrow resonance (Gamma < 0.4 MeV) for resonance mass below the Sigma_c(2455)-N threshold. This would be the lowest-lying C=+1 dibaryon, with mass estimated approximately as 3370+/-15 MeV.

$N\bar D $ system: A challenge for $\bar {\rm P}$ANDA

We study the $N \bar D$ system by means of a chiral constituent quark model. This model, tuned in the description of the baryon and meson spectra as well as the $NN$ interaction, provides parameter-free predictions for the charm -1 two-hadron systems. The presence of a heavy antiquark makes the interaction rather simple. We have found sharp quark-Pauli effects in some particular channels, generating repulsion, due to lacking degrees of freedom to accommodate the light quarks. Our results point to the existence of an attractive state, the $Δ\bar D^*$ with $(T,S)=(1,5/2)$, presenting a resonance close to threshold. It would show up in the scattering of $\bar D$ mesons on nucleons as a D wave state with quantum numbers $(T)J^P=(1)5/2^-$. This resonance resembles our findings in the $ΔΔ$ system, that offered a plausible explanation to the cross section of double-pionic fusion reactions through the so-called {\it ABC} effect. The study of the interaction of $D$ mesons with nucleons is a goal of the $\bar {\rm P}$ANDA Collaboration at the European facility FAIR and, thus, the present theoretical study is a challenge to be tested at the future experiments.

Examination of the H dibaryon within a chiral constituent quark model

We perform a coupled--channel calculation of the H dibaryon within a chiral constituent quark model. The problem is solved within a quark model constrained by the experimental data of strangeness --1 and --2 two--baryon systems. We examine in detail the role played by the different contributions of the interacting potential as well as the number of coupled channels considered. Special attention has been payed to the parameter dependence, flavor symmetry breaking and spatial configurations. The value extracted for the binding energy of the H dibaryon, being compatible with the restrictions imposed by the Nagara event, falls within a plausible extrapolation of recent lattice QCD results.

Heavy hadron spectroscopy: a quark model perspective

We present recent results of hadron spectroscopy and hadron-hadron interaction from the perspective of constituent quark models. We pay special attention to the role played by higher order Fock space components in the hadron spectra and the connection of this extension with the hadron-hadron interaction. The main goal of our description is to obtain a coherent understanding of the lowenergy hadron phenomenology without enforcing any particular model, to constrain its characteristics and learn about low-energy realization of the theory.

On the proliferation of X's, Y's and Z's candidates

Heavy meson spectroscopy above open flavor thresholds has become a challenge both from the experimental and theoretical points of view. Experimentally, several signals have been interpreted as meson resonances with unusual properties; theoretically, such signals may be identified with meson-meson molecules or compact multiquark structures. We analyze the influence of thresholds on heavy meson spectroscopy comparing different flavor sectors and quantum numbers. The validity of a quark-model picture above open-flavor thresholds would severely restrict the number of channels that may lodge multiquark structures as meson-meson molecules.

Too many $X's$, $Y's$ and $Z's$?

A large number of new states have been reported during the last few years in charmonium spectroscopy above the charmed meson production threshold. They have been called $X's$, $Y's$, and $Z's$. We reflect on the influence of thresholds on heavy meson spectroscopy comparing different flavor sectors and quantum numbers. The validity of a quark-model picture above open-flavor thresholds would severely restrict the number of channels that may lodge meson-meson molecules.

Meson-Meson molecules and compact four-quark states

The physics of charm has become one of the best laboratories exposing the limitations of the naive constituent quark model and also giving hints into a more mature description of meson spectroscopy, beyond the simple quark--antiquark configurations. In this talk we review some recent studies of multiquark components in the charm sector and discuss in particular exotic and non-exotic four-quark systems.

Strangeness -2 two-baryon systems

We derive strangeness -2 baryon-baryon interactions from a chiral constituent quark model including the full set of scalar mesons. The model has been tuned in the strangeness 0 and -1 two-baryon systems, providing parameter free predictions for the strangeness -2 case. We calculate elastic and inelastic $NΞ$ and $ΛΛ$ cross sections which are consistent with the existing experimental data. We also calculate the two-body scattering lengths for the different spin-isospin channels.

The few body problem of the quark-model hadron structure

We discuss recent results of hadron spectroscopy and hadron-hadron interaction within a quark model framework. New experimental data could point to the important role played by higher order Fock space components on low-energy observables. Our aim is to obtain a coherent description of the low-energy hadron phenomenology to constrain QCD phenomenological models and try to learn about low-energy realizations of the theory. This long-range effort is based in adapting few-body techniques to study many-quark systems.

Probabilities in nonorthogonal basis: Four--quark systems

Four-quark states may exist as colorless meson-meson molecules or compact systems with two-body colored components. We derive an analytical procedure to expand an arbitrary four--quark wave function in terms of nonorthogonal color singlet--singlet vectors. Using this expansion we develop the necessary formalism to evaluate the probability of physical components with an arbitrary four-quark wave function. Its application to characterize bound and unbound four--quark states as meson-meson, molecular or compact systems is discussed

Screened potential and quarkonia properties at high temperatures

We perform a quark model calculation of the quarkonia $b\overline{b}$ and $c\overline{c}$ spectra using smooth and sudden string breaking potentials. The screening parameter is scale dependent and can be related to an effective running gluon mass that has a finite infrared fixed point. A temperature dependence for the screening mass is motivated by lattice QCD simulations at finite temperature. Qualitatively different results are obtained for quarkonia properties close to a critical value of the deconfining temperature when a smooth or a sudden string breaking potential is used. In particular, with a sudden string breaking potential quarkonia radii remain almost independent of the temperature up to the critical point, only well above the critical point the radii increase significantly. Such a behavior will impact the phenomenology of quarkonia interactions in medium, in particular for scattering dissociation processes.

The $ρ-ω$ splitting in constituent quark models

In this letter we present a solution to describe simultaneously the light isoscalar and isovector vector mesons in constituent quark models. In Ref. [1] the $q\bar q$ spectrum was studied in a generalized constituent quark model constrained by the $NN$ phenomenology and the baryon spectrum. An overall good fit to the available experimental data was obtained. A major problem of this description was the relative position of the vector $ω$ and $ρ$ mesons. The present results improve the description of the isoscalar meson spectroscopy. They should serve as a step forward in distinguishing conventional quark model mesons from exotic states.

$nd$ scattering lengths from a quark-model based $NN$ interaction

We calculate the doublet and quartet neutron-deuteron scattering lengths using a nonlocal nucleon-nucleon interaction fully derived from quark-quark interactions. We use as input the $NN$ $^1S_0$ and $^3S_1$-${}^3 D_1$ partial waves. Our result for the quartet scattering length agrees well with the experimental value while the result for the doublet scattering length does not. However, if we take the result for the doublet scattering length together with the one for the triton binding energy they agree well with the so-called Phillips line.

Four-quark spectroscopy within the hyperspherical formalism

We present a generalization of the hyperspherical harmonic formalism to study systems made of quarks and antiquarks of the same flavor. This generalization is based on the symmetrization of the $N-$body wave function with respect to the symmetric group using the Barnea and Novoselsky algorithm. The formalism is applied to study four-quark systems by means of a constituent quark model successful in the description of the two- and three-quark systems. The results are compared to those obtained by means of variational approaches. Our analysis shows that four-quark systems with exotic $0^{+-}$ and non-exotic $2^{++}$ quantum numbers may be bound independently of the mass of the quark. $2^{+-}$ and $1^{+-}$ states become attractive only for larger mass of the quarks.

Open-charm meson spectroscopy

We present a theoretical framework that accounts for the new $D_J$ and $D_{sJ}$ mesons measured in the open-charm sector. These resonances are properly described if considered as a mixture of conventional $P-$wave quark-antiquark states and four-quark components. The narrowest states are basically $P-$wave quark-antiquark mesons, while the dominantly four-quark states are shifted above the corresponding two-meson threshold, being broad resonances. We study the electromagnetic decay widths as basic tools to scrutiny their nature. The proposed explanation incorporates in a natural way the most recently discovered mesons in charmonium spectroscopy.

Tetraquarks in a chiral constituent quark model

We analyze the possibility of heavy-light tetraquark bound states by means of a chiral constituent quark model. The study is done in a variational approach. Special attention is paid to the contribution given by the different terms of the interacting potential and also to the role played by the different color channels. We find a stable state for both $qq\bar{c}\bar{c}$ and $qq\bar{b}\bar{b}$ configurations. Possible decay modes of these structures are analyzed.

Microscopic $NN\to NN^{\ast}(1440)$ transition potential: Determination of $πNN^{\ast}(1440)$ and $σNN^{\ast}(1440) $ coupling constants

A $NN\to NN^{\ast}(1440)$ transition potential, based on an effective quark-quark interaction and a constituent quark cluster model for baryons, is derived in the Born-Oppenheimer approach. The potential shows significant differences with respect to those obtained by a direct scaling of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. From its asymptotic behavior we extract the values of $πNN^{\ast}(1440)$ and $σNN^{\ast}(1440)$ coupling constants in a particular coupling scheme

Towards a Unified Description of the Baryon Spectrum and the Baryon-Baryon Interaction within a Potential Model Scheme

We study the low energy part of the nucleon and $Δ$ spectra by solving the Schrödinger equation for the three-quark system in the hyperspherical harmonic approach. The quark-quark hamiltonian considered includes, besides the usual one-gluon exchange, pion and sigma exchanges generated by the chiral symmetry breaking. This quark-quark potential reproduces, in a Resonating Group Method calculation, the nucleon-nucleon scattering phase shifts and the deuteron properties. The baryonic spectrum obtained is quite reasonable and the resulting wave function is consistent with the ansatz used in the two baryon system.
