Undamped inter-valley paramagnons in doped graphene

We predict the existence of an undamped collective spin excitation in doped graphene in the paramagnetic regime, referred to as paramagnons. Since the electrons and the holes involved in this collective mode reside in different valleys of the band structure, the momentum of these inter-valley paramagnons is given by the separation of the valleys in momentum space. The energy of the inter-valley paramagnons lies in the void region below the continuum of inter-band single-particle electron-hole excitations that appears when graphene is doped. The paramagnons are undamped due to the lack of electron-hole excitations in this void region. Their energy strongly depends on doping concentration, which can help to identify them in future experiments.

Optical detection of single electron transport dynamics

The unpredictability of a single quantum event lies at the very core of quantum mechanics. Physical information is therefore drawn from a statistical evaluation of many such processes. Nevertheless, recording each single quantum event in a time trace the "random telegraph signal" is of great value, as it allows insight into the underlying physical system. Here, quantum dots have proven to be well suited systems, as they exhibit both single photon emission and single electron charge transport. While single photon emission is generally studied on self-assembled quantum dots, single electron transport studies are focused on gate-defined structures. We investigate, on a single self-assembled quantum dot, the single electron transport in the optical telegraph signal with high bandwidth and observe in the full counting statistics the interplay between charge and spin dynamics in a noninvasive way. In particular, we are able to identify the spin relaxation of the Zeeman-split quantum-dot level in the charge statistics.

Interaction-induced current asymmetries in resonant transport through interacting quantum-dot spin valves revealed by iterative summation of path integrals

Resonant tunneling of electrons between two ferromagnets and a quantum dot in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field reveals a strong gate dependence in the linear and nonlinear bias regime. This gate dependence originates from the interplay between Coulomb interactions and spin-dependent hybridization between the quantum dot and the leads. To take into account Coulomb interaction strengths of the same order of magnitude as the external magnetic field and the hybridization strength we adopt the numerically exact iterative summation of path integrals (ISPI).

Spin resonance without spin splitting

We predict that a single-level quantum dot without discernible splitting of its spin states develops a spin-precession resonance in charge transport when embedded into a spin valve. The resonance occurs in the generic situation of Coulomb blockaded transport with ferromagnetic leads whose polarizations deviate from perfect antiparallel alignment. The resonance appears when electrically tuning the interaction-induced exchange field perpendicular to one of the polarizations -- a simple condition relying on vectors in contrast to usual resonance conditions associated with energy splittings. The spin resonance can be detected by stationary dI/dV spectroscopy and by oscillations in the time-averaged current using a gate-pulsing scheme. The generic noncollinearity of the ferromagnets and junction asymmetry allow for an all-electric determination of the spin-injection asymmetry, the anisotropy of spin relaxation, and the magnitude of the exchange field. We also investigate the impact of a nearby superconductor on the resonance position. Our simplistic model turns out to be generic for a broad class of coherent few-level quantum systems.

Thermoelectric transport in $\text{Bi}_2\text{Te}_3/\text{Sb}_2\text{Te}_3$ superlattices

The thermoelectric transport properties of $\text{Bi}_2\text{Te}_3/\text{Sb}_2\text{Te}_3$superlattices are analyzed on the basis of first-principles calculations and semi-classical Boltzmann theory. The anisotropy of the thermoelectric transport under electron and hole-doping was studied in detail for different superlattice periods at changing temperature and charge carrier concentrations. A clear preference for thermoelectric transport under hole-doping, as well as for the in-plane transport direction was found for all superlattice periods. At hole-doping the electrical transport anisotropies remain bulk-like for all investigated systems, while under electron-doping quantum confinement leads to strong suppression of the cross-plane thermoelectric transport at several superlattice periods. In addition, insights on the Lorenz function, the electronic contribution to the thermal conductivity and the resulting figure of merit are given.

Transverse rectification in density-modulated two-dimensional electron gases

We demonstrate tunable transverse rectification in a density-modulated two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The density modulation is induced by two surface gates, running in parallel along a narrow stripe of 2DEG. A transverse voltage in the direction of the density modulation is observed, i.e. perpendicular to the applied source-drain voltage. The polarity of the transverse voltage is independent of the polarity of the source-drain voltage, demonstrating rectification in the device. We find that the transverse voltage $U_{y}$ depends quadratically on the applied source-drain voltage and non-monotonically on the density modulation. The experimental results are discussed in the framework of a diffusion thermopower model.

Tunneling resonances in quantum dots: Coulomb interaction modifies the width

Single-electron tunneling through a zero-dimensional state in an asymmetric double-barrier resonant-tunneling structure is studied. The broadening of steps in the $I$--$V$ characteristics is found to strongly depend on the polarity of the applied bias voltage. Based on a qualitative picture for the finite-life-time broadening of the quantum dot states and a quantitative comparison of the experimental data with a non-equilibrium transport theory, we identify this polarity dependence as a clear signature of Coulomb interaction.

Isospin Dependence of the Spin-Orbit Force and Effective Nuclear Potentials,

The isospin dependence of the spin-orbit potential is investigated for an effective Skyrme-like energy functional suitable for density dependent Hartree-Fock calculations. The magnitude of the isospin dependence is obtained from a fit to experimental data on finite spherical nuclei. It is found to be close to that of relativistic Hartree models. Consequently, the anomalous kink in the isotope shifts of Pb nuclei is well reproduced.
