Evolution of magneto-crystalline anisotropies in Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si and Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si as inferred from small-angle neutron scattering and bulk properties

We report a comprehensive small-angle neutron scattering~(SANS) study of Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si at zero magnetic field. To delineate changes of magneto-crystalline anisotropies (MCAs) from effects due to defects and disorder, we recorded complementary susceptibility and specific heat data, and investigated selected compositions of Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si. For all systems studied the transition temperature and magnetic phase diagrams evolve monotonically with composition consistent with literature. The SANS patterns of the magnetic order recorded under zero-field cooling display strong changes of the directions of the intensity maxima and smeared out intensity distributions as a function of composition. We show that cubic MCAs account for the complex evolution of the SANS patterns, where for increasing $x$ the character of the MCAs shifts from terms that are fourth-order to terms that are sixth order in spin--orbit coupling. The magnetic field dependence of the susceptibility and SANS establishes that the helix reorientation as a function of magnetic field for Fe- or Co-doped MnSi is dominated by pinning due to defects and disorder. The presence of thermodynamic anomalies of the specific heat at the phase boundaries of the skyrmion lattice phase in the doped samples and properties observed in Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si establishes that the pinning due to defects and disorder remains, however, weak and comparable to the field scale of the helix reorientation. The observation that MCAs, that are sixth order in spin-orbit coupling, play an important role for the spontaneous order in Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si and Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si, offering a fresh perspective for a wide range of topics in cubic chiral magnets such as the generic magnetic phase diagram, the morphology of topological spin textures, the paramagnetic-to-helical transition, and quantum phase transitions.

Low energy magnons in the chiral ferrimagnet $\text{Cu}_2\text{OSeO}_3$: a coarse-grained approach

We report a comprehensive neutron scattering study of low energy magnetic excitations in the breathing pyrochlore helimagnetic $\text{Cu}_2\text{OSeO}_3$. Fully documenting the four lowest energy magnetic modes that leave the ferrimagnetic configuration of the "strong tetrahedra" intact ($|\hbarω|<13$ meV), we find gapless quadratic dispersion at the $Γ$ point for energies above 0.2 meV, two doublets separated by 1.6(2) meV at the $R$ point, and a bounded continuum at the $X$ point. Our constrained rigid spin cluster model relates these features to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and the incommensurate helical ground state. Combining conventional spin wave theory with a spin cluster form-factor accurately reproduces the measured equal time structure factor through multiple Brillouin zones. An effective spin Hamiltonian describing the complex anisotropic inter-cluster interactions is obtained.

Orientation Dependence of the Magnetic Phase Diagram of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

In the quest to realize a quantum spin liquid (QSL), magnetic long-range order is hardly welcome. Yet it can offer deep insights into a complex world of strong correlations and fluctuations. Much hope was placed in the cubic pyrochlore Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ as a putative U(1) QSL but a new class of ultra-pure single crystals make it abundantly clear the stoichiometric compound is a ferromagnet. Here we present a detailed experimental and theoretical study of the corresponding field-temperature phase diagram. We find it to be richly anisotropic with a critical endpoint for $\vec{B}\,\parallel\,\langle 100\rangle$, while field parallel to $\langle 110 \rangle$ and $\langle 111 \rangle$ enhances the critical temperature by up to a factor of two and shifts the onset of the field-polarized state to finite fields. Landau theory shows that Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ in some ways is remarkably similar to pure iron. However, it also pinpoints anomalies that cannot be accounted for at the classical mean-field level including a dramatic enhancement of $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ and reentrant phase boundary by fields with a component transverse to the easy axes, as well as the anisotropy of the upper critical field in the quantum limit.

Weak crystallization of fluctuating skyrmion textures in MnSi

We report an experimental study of the emergence of non-trivial topological winding and long-range order across the paramagnetic to skyrmion lattice transition in the transition metal helimagnet MnSi. Combining measurements of the susceptibility with small angle neutron scattering, neutron resonance spin echo spectroscopy and all-electrical microwave spectroscopy, we find evidence of skyrmion textures in the paramagnetic state exceeding $10^3$Åwith lifetimes above several 10$^{-9}$s. Our experimental findings establish that the paramagnetic to skyrmion lattice transition in MnSi is well-described by the Landau soft-mode mechanism of weak crystallization, originally proposed in the context of the liquid to crystal transition. As a key aspect of this theoretical model, the modulation-vectors of periodic small amplitude components of the magnetization form triangles that add to zero. In excellent agreement with our experimental findings, these triangles of the modulation-vectors entail the presence of the non-trivial topological winding of skyrmions already in the paramagnetic state of MnSi when approaching the skyrmion lattice transition.

Kinetic small angle neutron scattering of the Skyrmion lattice in MnSi

We report a kinetic small angle neutron scattering study of the skyrmion lattice (SL) in MnSi. Induced by an oscillatory tilting of the magnetic field direction, the elasticity and relaxation of the SL along the magnetic field direction have been measured with microsecond resolution. For the excitation frequency of 325 Hz the SL begins to track the tilting motion of the applied magnetic field under tilting angles exceeding $α_c$ > 0.4°. Empirically the associated angular velocity of the tilting connects quantitatively with the critical charge carrier velocity of approx. 0.1mm/s under current driven spin transfer torques, for which the SL unpins. In addition, a pronounced temperature dependence of the skyrmion motion is attributed to the variation of the skyrmion stiffness. Taken together our study highlights the power of kinetic small angle neutron scattering as a new experimental tool to explore, in a rather general manner, the elasticity and impurity pinning of magnetic textures across a wide parameter space without parasitic signal interferences due to ohmic heating or Oersted magnetic fields.

Critical spin-flip scattering at the helimagnetic transition of MnSi

We report spherical neutron polarimetry (SNP) and discuss the spin-flip scattering cross sections as well as the chiral fraction $η$ close to the helimagnetic transition in MnSi. For our study, we have developed a miniaturised SNP device that allows fast data collection when used in small angle scattering geometry with an area detector. Critical spin-flip scattering is found to be governed by chiral paramagnons that soften on a sphere in momentum space. Carefully accounting for the incoherent spin-flip background, we find that the resulting chiral fraction $η$ decreases gradually above the helimagnetic transition reflecting a strongly renormalised chiral correlation length with a temperature dependence in excellent quantitative agreement with the Brazovskii theory for a fluctuation-induced first order transition.

Neutron spin echo spectroscopy under 17T magnetic field at RESEDA

We report proof-of-principle measurements at the neutron resonance spin echo spectrometer RESEDA (MLZ) under large magnetic fields by means of Modulation of IntEnsity with Zero Effort (MIEZE). Our study demonstrates the feasibility of applying strong magnetic fields up to 17\,T at the sample while maintaining unchanged sub-$μ$eV resolution. We find that the MIEZE-spin-echo resolution curve remains essentially unchanged as a function of magnetic field up to the highest fields available, promising access to high fields without need for additional fine-tuning of the instrument. This sets the stage for the experimental investigation of subtle field dependent phenomena, such as magnetic field-driven phase transitions in hard and soft condensed matter physics.
