Bulk Fermi surface of charge-neutral excitations in SmB6 or not: a heat-transport study

Recently there have been increasingly hot debates on whether a bulk Fermi surface of charge-neutral excitations exists in the topological Kondo insulator SmB6. To unambiguously resolve this issue, we performed the low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements of a high-quality SmB6 single crystal down to 0.1 K and up to 14.5 T. Our experiments show that the residual linear term of thermal conductivity at zero field is zero, within the experimental accuracy. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity is insensitive to magnetic field up to 14.5 T. These results exclude the existence of fermionic charge-neutral excitations in bulk SmB6, such as scalar Majorana fermions or spinons, thus put a strong constraint on the explanation of the quantum oscillations observed in SmB6.

High-pressure study of the Weyl semimetal NbAs

We performed a series of high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and resistance measurements on the Weyl semimetal NbAs. The crystal structure remains stable up to 26 GPa according to the powder XRD data. The resistance of NbAs single crystal increases monotonically with pressure at low temperature. Up to 20 GPa, no superconducting transition is observed down to 0.3 K. These results show that the Weyl semimetal phase is robust in NbAs, and applying pressure is not a good way to get a topological superconductor from a Weyl semimetal.

Superconductivity at 2.5 K in new transition-metal chalcogenide Ta2PdSe5

We report the synthesis and superconducting properties of a new transition-metal chalcogenide Ta2_2PdSe5_5. The measurements of resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat reveal that Ta2_2PdSe5_5 is a bulk superconductor with TcT_c ≃\simeq 2.5 K. The zero-field electronic specific heat in the superconducting state can be fitted with a two-gap BCS model. The upper critical field Hc2H_{c2} shows a linear temperature dependence, and the value of Hc2H_{c2}(0) is much higher than the estimated Pauli limiting field Hc2PH_{c2}^{P} and orbital limiting field Hc2orbH_{c2}^{orb}. All these results of specific heat and upper critical field suggest that Ta2_2PdSe5_5 is a multi-band superconductor.

Universal Heat Conduction in Ce1-xYbxCoIn5: Evidence for Robust Nodal d-wave Superconducting Gap

In heavy-fermion superconductor Ce1−x_{1-x}Ybx_xCoIn5_5 system, Yb doping was reported to cause a possible change from nodal dd-wave superconductivity to a fully gapped dd-wave molecular superfluid of composite pairs near x≈x \approx 0.07 (nominal value xnomx_{nom} = 0.2). Here we present systematic thermal conductivity measurements on Ce1−x_{1-x}Ybx_xCoIn5_5 (xx = 0.013, 0.084, and 0.163) single crystals. The observed finite residual linear term κ0/Tκ_0/T is insensitive to Yb doping, verifying the universal heat conduction of nodal dd-wave superconducting gap in Ce1−x_{1-x}Ybx_xCoIn5_5. Similar universal heat conduction is also observed in CeCo(In1−y_{1-y}Cdy_y)5_5 system. These results reveal robust nodal dd-wave gap in CeCoIn5_5 upon Yb or Cd doping.

Multi-gap nodeless superconductivity in nickel chalcogenide TlNi2Se2

Low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements were performed on single crystals of TlNi2_2Se2_2, a nickel-chalcogenide heavy-electron superconductor with TcT_c ≃\simeq 3.7 K. In zero field, the residual electronic contribution at TT →\rightarrow 0 K (κ0/Tκ_0/T) was well separated from the total thermal conductivity, which is less than 0.45\% of its normal-state value. Such a tiny residual κ0/Tκ_0/T is unlikely contributed by the nodal quasiparticles. Nodeless gap structure is supported by the very weak field dependence of κ0(H)/Tκ_0(H)/T in low magnetic fields. In the whole field range, κ0(H)/Tκ_0(H)/T exhibits an "SS"-shape curve, as in the case of nickel pnictides BaNi2_2As2_2 and SrNi2_2P2_2. This common feature of nickel-based superconductors can be explained by multiple nodeless superconducting gaps.

Quantum transport evidence for a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal phase in Cd3As2

The material termed three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal has attracted great interests recently, since it is an electronic analogue to two-dimensional graphene. Starting from this novel phase, various topologically distinct phases may be obtained, such as topological insulator, Weyl semimetal, quantum spin Hall insulator, and topological superconductor. Soon after the theoretical predictions, the angle-resolve photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments gave evidences for 3D Dirac points in Na3Bi and Cd3As2. Here we report quantum transport properties of Cd3As2 single crystal in magnetic field. A sizable linear quantum magnetoresistance is observed at high temperature. With decreasing temperature, the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations appear in both longitudinal resistance Rxx and transverse Hall resistance Rxy. From the strong oscillatory component ΔRxx, the linear dependence of Landau index n on 1/B gives an n-axis intercept 0.58. Our quantum transport result clearly reveals a nontrivial π Berry's phase, thus provides strong bulk evidence for a 3D Dirac semimetal phase in Cd3As2. This may open new perspectives for its use in electronic devices.

Anomalous reduction of the Lorenz ratio at the quantum critical point in YbAgGe

We report measurements of the electrical and thermal transport on the hexagonal heavy-fermion metal YbAgGe for temperatures T≥T\geq 40 mK and in magnetic fields H∥abH\parallel ab up to 14 T. This distorted Kagome-lattice system displays a series of magnetic states and a quantum critical point at Hc=4.5H_c =4.5 T. The Lorenz ratio L(T)/L0L(T)/L_0 displays a marked reduction only close to HcH_c. A TT-linear contribution below 120 mK, present at all different fields, allows to extrapolate the Lorenz ratio towards T=0. At the critical field this yields L/L0=0.92±0.03L/L_0=0.92\pm 0.03, suggesting a violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law due to strong inelastic scattering.

Field-induced quantum critical point and nodal superconductivity in the heavy-fermion superconductor Ce2PdIn8

The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity has been a central issue in unconventional superconductors. While the dynamic magnetism could be the source of electron pairing, the static magnetism is generally believed to compete with superconductivity. In this sense, the observation of Q phase, the coupled spin-density wave order and superconductivity, in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is very puzzling. Whether this Q phase origins from the novel Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state is under hot debate. Here we report the resistivity and thermal conductivity study of a newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor Ce2PdIn8 down to 50 mK. We find an unusual field-induced quantum critical point at the upper critical field Hc2 and unconventional nodal superconductivity in Ce2PdIn8. The jump of thermal conductivity k(H)/T near Hc2 suggests a first-order-like phase transition at low temperatures. These results mimic the features of the Q phase in CeCoIn5, implying that Ce2PdIn8 is another promising compound to investigate the exotic Q phase and FFLO state. The comparison between CeCoIn5 and Ce2PdIn8 may help to clarify the origin of the Q phase.

Unveiling the quantum critical point of an Ising chain

Quantum phase transitions occur at zero temperature upon variation of some nonthermal control parameters. The Ising chain in a transverse field is probably the most-studied model undergoing such a transition, from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state1,2. This model can be exactly solved by using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, which transforms the spins into noninteracting spinless fermions1. At the quantum critical point, the magnetic excitations can carry arbitrarily low energy and dominate the low temperature properties. Here we report the unveiling of such quantum critical point in quasi-one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet CoNb2O6 by ultra-low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements. We find that in the paramagnetic state, phonons are scattered by the magnetic excitations above certain temperature Ts, which corresponds to a gap. As predicted by the theoretical model1, this gap linearly goes to zero with decreasing the transverse field, thus determining the quantum critical point of the Ising chain.

Quantum criticality and nodal superconductivity in the FeAs-based superconductor KFe2As2

The in-plane resistivity ρρ and thermal conductivity κκ of FeAs-based superconductor KFe2_2As2_2 single crystal were measured down to 50 mK. We observe non-Fermi-liquid behavior ρ(T)∼T1.5ρ(T) \sim T^{1.5} at Hc2H_{c_2} = 5 T, and the development of a Fermi liquid state with ρ(T)∼T2ρ(T) \sim T^2 when further increasing field. This suggests a field-induced quantum critical point, occurring at the superconducting upper critical field Hc2H_{c_2}. In zero field there is a large residual linear term κ0/Tκ_0/T, and the field dependence of κ0/Tκ_0/T mimics that in d-wave cuprate superconductors. This indicates that the superconducting gaps in KFe2_2As2_2 have nodes, likely d-wave symmetry. Such a nodal superconductivity is attributed to the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near the quantum critical point.

Thermal conductivity of overdoped BaFe1.73_{1.73}Co0.27_{0.27}As2_2 single crystal: Evidence for nodeless multiple superconducting gaps and interband interactions

The in-plane thermal conductivity κκ of overdoped FeAs-based superconductor BaFe1.73_{1.73}Co0.27_{0.27}As2_2 (TcT_c = 8.1 K) single crystal was measured down to 80 mK. In zero field, the residual linear term κ0/Tκ_0/T is negligible, suggesting a nodeless superconducting gap in the abab-plane. In magnetic field, κ0/Tκ_0/T increases rapidly, very different from that of conventional s-wave superconductors. This anomalous κ0/T(H)κ_0/T(H) may reveal an exotic superconducting gap structure in overdoped BaFe1.73_{1.73}Co0.27_{0.27}As2_2: the vanishing hole (ββ) pocket has a much larger gap than the electron (γγ and δδ) pockets which contain most of the carriers. Such an exotic gap structure is an evidence for superconducting state induced by interband interactions, in which the band with the {\it smaller} density of states has a {\it larger} gap.

Nodeless superconducting gap in electron-doped BaFe1.9_{1.9}Ni0.1_{0.1}As2_2 probed by quasiparticle heat transport

The in-plane thermal conductivity κκ of electron-doped iron-arsenide superconductor BaFe1.9_{1.9}Ni0.1_{0.1}As2_2 (TcT_c = 20.3 K) single crystal was measured down to 70 mK. In zero field, the absence of a residual linear term κ0/Tκ_0/T at T→0 T \to 0 is strong evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. In magnetic field, κ0/Tκ_0/T shows a slow field dependence up to HH = 14.5 T (≈\approx 30% Hc2H_{c_2}). This is consistent with the superconducting gap structure demonstrated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments in BaFe1.85_{1.85}Co0.15_{0.15}As2_2 (TcT_c = 25.5 K), where isotropic superconducting gaps with similar size on hole and electron pockets were observed.
