First measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay, with nearly 9000 inverse beta decay candidates in the prompt energy region of 8-12~MeV observed over 1958 days of data collection. A multivariate analysis is used to separate 2500 signal events from background statistically. The hypothesis of no reactor antineutrinos with neutrino energy above 10~MeV is rejected with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations. A 29\% antineutrino flux deficit in the prompt energy region of 8-11~MeV is observed compared to a recent model prediction. We provide the unfolded antineutrino spectrum above 7 MeV as a data-based reference for other experiments. This result provides the first direct observation of the production of antineutrinos from several high-QβQ_β isotopes in commercial reactors.

Joint Determination of Reactor Antineutrino Spectra from 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu Fission by Daya Bay and PROSPECT

A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of 235^{235}U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the 235^{235}U spectral shape to about 3\%. The 235{}^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the 235^{235}U and 239^{239}Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

Improved Constraints on Sterile Neutrino Mixing from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, MINOS+, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for electron antineutrino, muon neutrino, and muon antineutrino disappearance driven by sterile neutrino mixing have been carried out by the Daya Bay and MINOS+ collaborations. This Letter presents the combined results of these searches, along with exclusion results from the Bugey-3 reactor experiment, framed in a minimally extended four-neutrino scenario. Significantly improved constraints on the θμeθ_{μe} mixing angle are derived that constitute the most stringent limits to date over five orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Δm412Δm^2_{41}, excluding the 90% C.L. sterile-neutrino parameter space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE observations at 90% CLs_s for Δm412<5 Δm^2_{41}<5\,eV2^2.Furthermore, the LSND and MiniBooNE 99% C.L. allowed regions are excluded at 99% CLs_s for Δm412Δm^2_{41} << 1.2 eV2^2.

Development of a Bonner Sphere Neutron Spectrometer from a Commercial Neutron Dosimeter

Bonner Spheres have been used widely for the measurement of neutron spectra with neutron energies ranged from thermal up to at least 20 MeV. A Bonner Sphere neutron spectrometer (BSS) was developed by extending a Berthold LB 6411 neutron-dose-rate meter. The BSS consists of a 3^{3}He thermal-neutron detector with integrated electronics, a set of eight polyethylene spherical shells and two optional lead shells of various sizes. The response matrix of the BSS was calculated with GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulation. The BSS had a calibration uncertainty of ±8.6%\pm 8.6\% and a detector background rate of (1.57±0.04)×10−3(1.57 \pm 0.04) \times 10^{-3} s−1^{-1}. A spectral unfolding code NSUGA was developed. The NSUGA code utilizes genetic algorithms and has been shown to perform well in the absence of a priori information.

Improved Search for a Light Sterile Neutrino with the Full Configuration of the Daya Bay Experiment

This Letter reports an improved search for light sterile neutrino mixing in the electron antineutrino disappearance channel with the full configuration of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. With an additional 404 days of data collected in eight antineutrino detectors, this search benefits from 3.6 times the statistics available to the previous publication, as well as from improvements in energy calibration and background reduction. A relative comparison of the rate and energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos in the three experimental halls yields no evidence of sterile neutrino mixing in the 2×10−4≲∣Δm412∣≲0.32\times10^{-4} \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.3 eV2^{2} mass range. The resulting limits on sin⁡22θ14\sin^{2}2θ_{14} are improved by approximately a factor of 2 over previous results and constitute the most stringent constraints to date in the ∣Δm412∣≲0.2|Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.2 eV2^{2} region.

Limits on Active to Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for a light sterile neutrino have been performed independently by the MINOS and the Daya Bay experiments using the muon (anti)neutrino and electron antineutrino disappearance channels, respectively. In this Letter, results from both experiments are combined with those from the Bugey-3 reactor neutrino experiment to constrain oscillations into light sterile neutrinos. The three experiments are sensitive to complementary regions of parameter space, enabling the combined analysis to probe regions allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments in a minimally extended four-neutrino flavor framework. Stringent limits on sin⁡22θμe\sin^2 2θ_{μe} are set over 6 orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Δm412Δm^2_{41}. The sterile-neutrino mixing phase space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded for Δm412<0.8Δm^2_{41} < 0.8 eV2^2 at 95% CLs_s.

Measurement of Cosmic-ray Muons and Muon-induced Neutrons in the Aberdeen Tunnel Underground Laboratory

We have measured the muon flux and production rate of muon-induced neutrons at a depth of 611 m water equivalent. Our apparatus comprises three layers of crossed plastic scintillator hodoscopes for tracking the incident cosmic-ray muons and 760 L of gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator for producing and detecting neutrons. The vertical muon intensity was measured to be Iμ=(5.7±0.6)×10−6I_μ = (5.7 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-6} cm−2^{-2}s−1^{-1}sr−1^{-1}. The yield of muon-induced neutrons in the liquid scintillator was determined to be Yn=(1.19±0.08(stat)±0.21(syst))×10−4Y_{n} = (1.19 \pm 0.08 (stat) \pm 0.21 (syst)) \times 10^{-4} neutrons/(μ⋅μ\cdotg⋅\cdotcm−2^{-2}). A fit to the recently measured neutron yields at different depths gave a mean muon energy dependence of ⟨Eμ⟩0.76±0.03\left\langle E_μ \right\rangle^{0.76 \pm 0.03} for liquid-scintillator targets.

New measurement of θ13θ_{13} via neutron capture on hydrogen at Daya Bay

This article reports an improved independent measurement of neutrino mixing angle θ13θ_{13} at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. Electron antineutrinos were identified by inverse ββ-decays with the emitted neutron captured by hydrogen, yielding a data-set with principally distinct uncertainties from that with neutrons captured by gadolinium. With the final two of eight antineutrino detectors installed, this study used 621 days of data including the previously reported 217-day data set with six detectors. The dominant statistical uncertainty was reduced by 49%. Intensive studies of the cosmogenic muon-induced 9^9Li and fast neutron backgrounds and the neutron-capture energy selection efficiency, resulted in a reduction of the systematic uncertainty by 26%. The deficit in the detected number of antineutrinos at the far detectors relative to the expected number based on the near detectors yielded sin⁡22θ13=0.071±0.011\sin^22θ_{13} = 0.071 \pm 0.011 in the three-neutrino-oscillation framework. The combination of this result with the gadolinium-capture result is also reported.

Study of the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation at Daya Bay

The disappearance of reactor νˉe\barν_e observed by the Daya Bay experiment is examined in the framework of a model in which the neutrino is described by a wave packet with a relative intrinsic momentum dispersion σrelσ_\text{rel}. Three pairs of nuclear reactors and eight antineutrino detectors, each with good energy resolution, distributed among three experimental halls, supply a high-statistics sample of νˉe\barν_e acquired at nine different baselines. This provides a unique platform to test the effects which arise from the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation. The modified survival probability formula was used to fit Daya Bay data, providing the first experimental limits: 2.38⋅10−17<σrel<0.232.38 \cdot 10^{-17} < σ_{\rm rel} < 0.23. Treating the dimensions of the reactor cores and detectors as constraints, the limits are improved: 10−14≲σrel<0.2310^{-14} \lesssim σ_{\rm rel} < 0.23, and an upper limit of σrel<0.20σ_{\rm rel} <0.20 is obtained. All limits correspond to a 95\% C.L. Furthermore, the effect due to the wave packet nature of neutrino oscillation is found to be insignificant for reactor antineutrinos detected by the Daya Bay experiment thus ensuring an unbiased measurement of the oscillation parameters sin⁡22θ13\sin^22θ_{13} and Δm322Δm^2_{32} within the plane wave model.

The Detector System of The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of νˉe\barν_e oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of sin22θ13\rm{sin}^22θ_{13} and the effective mass splitting Δmee2Δm_{ee}^2. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. This paper describes the Daya Bay detector systems, consisting of eight antineutrino detectors in three instrumented water pools in three underground halls, and their operation through the first year of eight detector data-taking.

The Radon Monitoring System in Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

We developed a highly sensitive, reliable and portable automatic system (H3^{3}) to monitor the radon concentration of the underground experimental halls of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. H3^{3} is able to measure radon concentration with a statistical error less than 10\% in a 1-hour measurement of dehumidified air (R.H. 5\% at 25∘^{\circ}C) with radon concentration as low as 50 Bq/m3^{3}. This is achieved by using a large radon progeny collection chamber, semiconductor αα-particle detector with high energy resolution, improved electronics and software. The integrated radon monitoring system is highly customizable to operate in different run modes at scheduled times and can be controlled remotely to sample radon in ambient air or in water from the water pools where the antineutrino detectors are being housed. The radon monitoring system has been running in the three experimental halls of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment since November 2013.

A new measurement of antineutrino oscillation with the full detector configuration at Daya Bay

We report a new measurement of electron antineutrino disappearance using the fully-constructed Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. The final two of eight antineutrino detectors were installed in the summer of 2012. Including the 404 days of data collected from October 2012 to November 2013 resulted in a total exposure of 6.9×\times105^5 GWth_{\rm th}-ton-days, a 3.6 times increase over our previous results. Improvements in energy calibration limited variations between detectors to 0.2%. Removal of six 241^{241}Am-13^{13}C radioactive calibration sources reduced the background by a factor of two for the detectors in the experimental hall furthest from the reactors. Direct prediction of the antineutrino signal in the far detectors based on the measurements in the near detectors explicitly minimized the dependence of the measurement on models of reactor antineutrino emission. The uncertainties in our estimates of sin⁡22θ13\sin^{2}2θ_{13} and ∣Δmee2∣|Δm^2_{ee}| were halved as a result of these improvements. Analysis of the relative antineutrino rates and energy spectra between detectors gave sin⁡22θ13=0.084±0.005\sin^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.084\pm0.005 and ∣Δmee2∣=(2.42±0.11)×10−3|Δm^{2}_{ee}|= (2.42\pm0.11) \times 10^{-3} eV2^2 in the three-neutrino framework.

Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Flux and Spectrum at Daya Bay

This Letter reports a measurement of the flux and energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos from six 2.9~GWth_{th} nuclear reactors with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1,579~m) underground experimental halls in the Daya Bay experiment. Using 217 days of data, 296,721 and 41,589 inverse beta decay (IBD) candidates were detected in the near and far halls, respectively. The measured IBD yield is (1.55 ±\pm 0.04) ×\times 10−18^{-18}~cm2^2/GW/day or (5.92 ±\pm 0.14) ×\times 10−43^{-43}~cm2^2/fission. This flux measurement is consistent with previous short-baseline reactor antineutrino experiments and is 0.946±0.0220.946\pm0.022 (0.991±0.0230.991\pm0.023) relative to the flux predicted with the Huber+Mueller (ILL+Vogel) fissile antineutrino model. The measured IBD positron energy spectrum deviates from both spectral predictions by more than 2σσ over the full energy range with a local significance of up to ∼\sim4σσ between 4-6 MeV. A reactor antineutrino spectrum of IBD reactions is extracted from the measured positron energy spectrum for model-independent predictions.

Independent Measurement of Theta13 via Neutron Capture on Hydrogen at Daya Bay

A new measurement of the θ13θ_{13} mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of θ13θ_{13} measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GWth_{th} reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as sin⁡22θ13=0.083±0.018\sin^22θ_{13}=0.083\pm0.018 in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain sin⁡22θ13=0.089±0.008\sin^22θ_{13}=0.089\pm0.008 as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.

Search for a Light Sterile Neutrino at Daya Bay

A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9~GWth_{\rm th} nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1579~m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the 10−3 eV2<∣Δm412∣<0.3 eV210^{\rm -3}~{\rm eV}^{2} < |Δm_{41}^{2}| < 0.3~{\rm eV}^{2} range. The relative spectral distortion due to electron antineutrino disappearance was found to be consistent with that of the three-flavor oscillation model. The derived limits on sin⁡22θ14\sin^22θ_{14} cover the 10−3 eV2≲∣Δm412∣≲0.1 eV210^{-3}~{\rm eV}^{2} \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1~{\rm eV}^{2} region, which was largely unexplored.

Spectral measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation amplitude and frequency at Daya Bay

A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos (ν‾e\overlineν_{e}) from six 2.92.9 GWth_{\rm th} reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41589 (203809 and 92912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude sin⁡22θ13=0.090−0.009+0.008\sin^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.090^{+0.008}_{-0.009} and the first direct measurement of the ν‾e\overlineν_{e} mass-squared difference ∣Δmee2∣=(2.59−0.20+0.19)×10−3 eV2|Δm^{2}_{ee}|= (2.59_{-0.20}^{+0.19}) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2 is obtained using the observed ν‾e\overlineν_{e} rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of ∣Δmee2∣|Δm^{2}_{ee}| is consistent with ∣Δmμμ2∣|Δm^{2}_{μμ}| measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model.

An apparatus for studying spallation neutrons in the Aberdeen Tunnel laboratory

In this paper, we describe the design, construction and performance of an apparatus installed in the Aberdeen Tunnel laboratory in Hong Kong for studying spallation neutrons induced by cosmic-ray muons under a vertical rock overburden of 611 meter water equivalent (m.w.e.). The apparatus comprises of six horizontal layers of plastic-scintillator hodoscopes for determining the direction and position of the incident cosmic-ray muons. Sandwiched between the hodoscope planes is a neutron detector filled with 650 kg of liquid scintillator doped with about 0.06% of Gadolinium by weight for improving the efficiency of detecting the spallation neutrons. Performance of the apparatus is also presented.

A side-by-side comparison of Daya Bay antineutrino detectors

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is designed to determine precisely the neutrino mixing angle θ13θ_{13} with a sensitivity better than 0.01 in the parameter sin22θ13^22θ_{13} at the 90% confidence level. To achieve this goal, the collaboration will build eight functionally identical antineutrino detectors. The first two detectors have been constructed, installed and commissioned in Experimental Hall 1, with steady data-taking beginning September 23, 2011. A comparison of the data collected over the subsequent three months indicates that the detectors are functionally identical, and that detector-related systematic uncertainties exceed requirements.

Evidence for the Direct Two-Photon Transition from ψ(3686)ψ(3686) to J/ψJ/ψ

The two-photon transition ψ(3686)→γγJ/ψψ(3686)\toγγJ/ψ is studied in a sample of 106 million ψ(3686)ψ(3686) decays collected by the BESIII detector. The branching fraction is measured to be $(3.1\pm0.6(\unit{stat})^{+0.8}_{-1.0}(\unit{syst})) \times10^{-4}$ using J/ψ→e+e−J/ψ\to e^+e^- and J/ψ→μ+μ−J/ψ\toμ^+μ^- decays, and its upper limit is estimated to be 4.5×10−44.5\times10^{-4} at the 90% conference level. This work represents the first measurement of a two-photon transition among charmonium states. The orientation of the ψ(3686)ψ(3686) decay plane and the J/ψJ/ψ polarization in this decay are also studied. In addition, the product branching fractions of sequential E1E1 transitions ψ(3686)→γχcJ,χcJ→γJ/ψ(J=0,1,2)ψ(3686)\toγχ_{cJ}, χ_{cJ}\toγJ/ψ(J=0,1,2) are reported.

First observation of the M1 transition ψ(3686)→γηc(2S)ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S)

Using a sample of 106 million ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we have made the first measurement of the M1 transition between the radially excited charmonium S-wave spin-triplet and the radially excited S-wave spin-singlet states: ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S). Analyses of the processes ψ(2S)\to γη_c(2S) with η_c(2S)\to \K_S^0 Kπand K^+K^-π^0 gave an η_c(2S) signal with a statistical significance of greater than 10 standard deviations under a wide range of assumptions about the signal and background properties. The data are used to obtain measurements of the η_c(2S) mass (M(η_c(2S))=3637.6\pm 2.9_\mathrm{stat}\pm 1.6_\mathrm{sys} MeV/c^2), width (Γ(η_c(2S))=16.9\pm 6.4_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.8_\mathrm{sys} MeV), and the product branching fraction (\BR(ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S))\times \BR(η_c(2S)\to K\bar Kπ) = (1.30\pm 0.20_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.30_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-5}). Combining our result with a BaBar measurement of \BR(η_c(2S)\to K\bar K π), we find the branching fraction of the M1 transition to be \BR(ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S)) = (6.8\pm 1.1_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.5_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-4}.

Precision measurement of the branching fractions of J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 and psi' -> pi+pi-pi0

We study the decays of the J/psi and psi' mesons to pi+pi-pi0 using data samples at both resonances collected with the BES III detector in 2009. We measure the corresponding branching fractions with unprecedented precision and provide mass spectra and Dalitz plots. The branching fraction for J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 is determined to be (2.137 +- 0.004 (stat.) +0.058-0.056 (syst.) +0.027-0.026 (norm.))*10-2, and the branching fraction for psi' -> pi+pi-pi0 is measured as (2.14 +- 0.03 (stat.) +0.08-0.07 (syst.) +0.09-0.08 (norm.))*10-4. The J/psi decay is found to be dominated by an intermediate rho(770) state, whereas the psi' decay is dominated by di-pion masses around 2.2 GeV/c2, leading to strikingly different Dalitz distributions.

Our branching-fraction results suggest a large phase angle between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes describing the J/ψ→NNˉJ/ψ\to N\bar{N} decay.

Two-photon widths of the χc0,2χ_{c0, 2} states and helicity analysis for $χ_{c2}\arγγ$}

Based on a data sample of 106 M ψ′ψ^{\prime} events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays $ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0, 2}$,$χ_{c0, 2}\arγγ$ are studied to determine the two-photon widths of the χc0,2χ_{c0, 2} states. The two-photon decay branching fractions are determined to be ${\cal B}(χ_{c0}\arγγ) = (2.24\pm 0.19\pm 0.12\pm 0.08)\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(χ_{c2}\arγγ) = (3.21\pm 0.18\pm 0.17\pm 0.13)\times 10^{-4}$. From these, the two-photon widths are determined to be Γγγ(χc0)=(2.33±0.20±0.13±0.17)Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0}) = (2.33\pm0.20\pm0.13\pm0.17) keV, Γγγ(χc2)=(0.63±0.04±0.04±0.04)Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = (0.63\pm0.04\pm0.04\pm0.04) keV, and R\cal R =Γγγ(χc2)/Γγγ(χc0)=0.271±0.029±0.013±0.027=Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0})=0.271\pm 0.029\pm 0.013\pm 0.027, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and those from the PDG ${\cal B}(ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0,2})$ and Γ(χc0,2)Γ(χ_{c0,2}) errors, respectively. The ratio of the two-photon widths for helicity λ=0λ=0 and helicity λ=2λ=2 components in the decay $χ_{c2}\arγγ$ is measured for the first time to be f0/2=Γγγλ=0(χc2)/Γγγλ=2(χc2)=0.00±0.02±0.02f_{0/2} =Γ^{λ=0}_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ^{λ=2}_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = 0.00\pm0.02\pm0.02.
