Functional dimension of feedforward ReLU neural networks

It is well-known that the parameterized family of functions representable by fully-connected feedforward neural networks with ReLU activation function is precisely the class of piecewise linear functions with finitely many pieces. It is less well-known that for every fixed architecture of ReLU neural network, the parameter space admits positive-dimensional spaces of symmetries, and hence the local functional dimension near any given parameter is lower than the parametric dimension. In this work we carefully define the notion of functional dimension, show that it is inhomogeneous across the parameter space of ReLU neural network functions, and continue an investigation - initiated in [14] and [5] - into when the functional dimension achieves its theoretical maximum. We also study the quotient space and fibers of the realization map from parameter space to function space, supplying examples of fibers that are disconnected, fibers upon which functional dimension is non-constant, and fibers upon which the symmetry group acts non-transitively.

Annular Khovanov-Lee homology, braids, and cobordisms

We prove that the Khovanov-Lee complex of an oriented link, L, in a thickened annulus, A x I, has the structure of a bifiltered complex whose filtered chain homotopy type is an invariant of the isotopy class of L in A x I. Using ideas of Ozsvath-Stipsicz-Szabo as reinterpreted by Livingston, we use this structure to define a family of annular Rasmussen invariants that yield information about annular and non-annular cobordisms. Focusing on the special case of annular links obtained as braid closures, we use the behavior of the annular Rasmussen invariants to obtain a necessary condition for braid quasipositivity and a sufficient condition for right-veeringness.

Khovanov homology, sutured Floer homology, and annular links

Lawrence Roberts, extending the work of Ozsvath-Szabo, showed how to associate to a link, L, in the complement of a fixed unknot, B, in S^3, a spectral sequence from the Khovanov homology of a link in a thickened annulus to the knot Floer homology of the preimage of B inside the double-branched cover of L. In a previous paper, we extended Ozsvath-Szabo's spectral sequence in a different direction, constructing for each knot K in S^3 and each positive integer n, a spectral sequence from Khovanov's categorification of the reduced, n-colored Jones polynomial to the sutured Floer homology of a reduced n-cable of K. In the present work, we reinterpret Roberts' result in the language of Juhasz's sutured Floer homology and show that our spectral sequence is a direct summand of Roberts'.

Knot concordance and Heegaard Floer homology invariants in branched covers

By studying the Heegaard Floer homology of the preimage of a knot K in S^3 inside its double branched cover, we develop simple obstructions to K having finite order in the classical smooth concordance group. As an application, we prove that all 2-bridge knots of crossing number at most 12 for which the smooth concordance order was previously unknown have infinite smooth concordance order.
