Measurement of $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$ using $e^+e^-$ pairs from $γ^*/Z$ bosons produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV

At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow e^+e^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson. The forward-backward asymmetry in the polar-angle distribution of the $e^-$ as a function of the $e^+e^-$-pair mass is used to obtain $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$, the effective leptonic determination of the electroweak-mixing parameter $\sin^2θ_W$. The measurement sample, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), corresponds to 9.4~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV, and is the full CDF Run II data set. The value of $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$ is found to be $0.23248 \pm 0.00053$. The combination with the previous CDF measurement based on $μ^+μ^-$ pairs yields $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff} = 0.23221 \pm 0.00046$. This result, when interpreted within the specified context of the standard model assuming $\sin^2 θ_W = 1 - M_W^2/M_Z^2$ and that the $W$- and $Z$-boson masses are on-shell, yields $\sin^2θ_W = 0.22400 \pm 0.00045$, or equivalently a $W$-boson mass of $80.328 \pm 0.024 \;{\rm GeV}/c^2$.

Measurement of the $WW$ and $WZ$ production cross section using final states with a charged lepton and heavy-flavor jets in the full CDF Run II data set

We present a measurement of the total {\it WW} and {\it WZ} production cross sections in $p\bar{p}$ collision at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV, in a final state consistent with leptonic $W$ boson decay and jets originating from heavy-flavor quarks from either a $W$ or a $Z$ boson decay. This analysis uses the full data set collected with the CDF II detector during Run II of the Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$. An analysis of the dijet mass spectrum provides $3.7σ$ evidence of the summed production processes of either {\it WW} or {\it WZ} bosons with a measured total cross section of $σ_{WW+WZ} = 13.7\pm 3.9$~pb. Independent measurements of the {\it WW} and {\it WZ} production cross sections are allowed by the different heavy-flavor decay-patterns of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons and by the analysis of secondary-decay vertices reconstructed within heavy-flavor jets. The productions of {\it WW} and of {\it WZ} dibosons are independently seen with significances of $2.9σ$ and $2.1σ$, respectively, with total cross sections of $σ_{WW}= 9.4\pm 4.2$~pb and $σ_{WZ}=3.7^{+2.5}_{-2.2}$~pb. The measurements are consistent with standard-model predictions.

Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in low-mass bottom-quark pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions

We report a measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{FB}$, in $b\bar{b}$ pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions and identified by muons from semileptonic $b$-hadron decays. The event sample was collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV with the CDF II detector and corresponds to 6.9 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We obtain an integrated asymmetry of $A_{FB}(b\bar{b})=(1.2 \pm 0.7)$\% at the particle level for $b$-quark pairs with invariant mass, $m_{b\bar{b}}$, down to $40$ GeV/$c^2$ and measure the dependence of $A_{FB}(b\bar{b})$ on $m_{b\bar{b}}$. The results are compatible with expectations from the standard model.

Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry of top-quark and antiquark pairs using the full CDF Run II data set

We measure the forward--backward asymmetry of the production of top quark and antiquark pairs in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 1.96~\mathrm{TeV}$ using the full data set collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in Tevatron Run II corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9.1~\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The asymmetry is characterized by the rapidity difference between top quarks and antiquarks ($Δy$), and measured in the final state with two charged leptons (electrons and muons). The inclusive asymmetry, corrected to the entire phase space at parton level, is measured to be $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}} = 0.12 \pm 0.13$, consistent with the expectations from the standard-model (SM) and previous CDF results in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combination of the CDF measurements of the inclusive $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}$ in both final states yields $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}=0.160\pm0.045$, which is consistent with the SM predictions. We also measure the differential asymmetry as a function of $Δy$. A linear fit to $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}(|Δy|)$, assuming zero asymmetry at $Δy=0$, yields a slope of $α=0.14\pm0.15$, consistent with the SM prediction and the previous CDF determination in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combined slope of $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}(|Δy|)$ in the two final states is $α=0.227\pm0.057$, which is $2.0σ$ larger than the SM prediction.

Measurement of vector boson plus $D^{*}(2010)^+$ meson production in $\bar{p}p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96\, {\rm TeV}$

A measurement of vector boson ($V$) production in conjunction with a $D^{*}(2010)^+$ meson is presented. Using a data sample corresponding to $9.7\, {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of ^Mproton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1.96\rm~ TeV$ produced by the Fermilab Tevatron, we reconstruct $V+D^{*+}$ samples with the CDF~II detector. The $D^{*+}$ is fully reconstructed in the $D^{*}(2010)^+ \rightarrow D^{0}(\to K^-π^+)π^+$ decay mode. This technique is sensitive to the associated production of vector boson plus charm or bottom mesons. We measure the ratio of production cross sections $σ(W+D^{*})/σ(W)$ = $[1.75\pm 0.13 {\rm (stat)}\pm 0.09 {\rm (syst)}]\% $ and $σ(Z+D^{*})/σ(Z)$ = $[1.5\pm 0.4 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.2 {\rm (syst)}]\% $ and perform a differential measurement of $dσ(W+D^{*})/dp_T(D^{*})$. Event properties are utilized to determine the fraction of $V+D^{*}(2010)^+$ events originating from different production processes. The results are in agreement with the predictions obtained with the {\sc pythia} program, limiting possible contribution from non-standard-model physics processes.

Search for a Low-Mass Neutral Higgs Boson with Suppressed Couplings to Fermions Using Events with Multiphoton Final States

A search for a Higgs boson with suppressed couplings to fermions, $h_f$, assumed to be the neutral, lower-mass partner of the Higgs boson discovered at the Large Hadron Collider, is reported. Such a Higgs boson could exist in extensions of the standard model with two Higgs doublets, and could be produced via $p\bar{p} \to H^\pm h_f \to W^* h_f h_f \to 4γ+ X$, where $H^\pm$ is a charged Higgs boson. This analysis uses all events with at least three photons in the final state from proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96~TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.2~${\rm fb}^{-1}$. No evidence of a signal is observed in the data. Values of Higgs-boson masses between 10 and 100 GeV/$c^2$ are excluded at 95\% Bayesian credibility.

A Study of the Energy Dependence of the Underlying Event in Proton-Antiproton Collisions

We study charged particle production in proton-antiproton collisions at 300 GeV, 900 GeV, and 1.96 TeV. We use the direction of the charged particle with the largest transverse momentum in each event to define three regions of eta-phi space; toward, away, and transverse. The average number and the average scalar pT sum of charged particles in the transverse region are sensitive to the modeling of the underlying event. The transverse region is divided into a MAX and MIN transverse region, which helps separate the hard component (initial and final-state radiation) from the beam-beam remnant and multiple parton interaction components of the scattering. The center-of-mass energy dependence of the various components of the event are studied in detail. The data presented here can be used to constrain and improve QCD Monte Carlo models, resulting in more precise predictions at the LHC energies of 13 and 14 TeV.

First measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in bottom-quark pair production at high mass

We measure the particle-level forward-backward production asymmetry in $b\bar{b}$ pairs with masses $m(b\bar{b})$ larger than 150 GeV/$c^2$, using events with hadronic jets and employing jet charge to distinguish $b$ from $\bar{b}$. The measurement uses 9.5/fb of ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II detector. The asymmetry as a function of $m(b\bar{b})$ is consistent with zero, as well as with the predictions of the standard model. The measurement disfavors a simple model including an axigluon with a mass of 200 GeV/$c^2$ whereas a model containing a heavier 345 GeV/$c^2$ axigluon is not excluded.

Measurement of central exclusive pi+pi- production in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 1.96 TeV at CDF

We measure exclusive $π^+π^-$ production in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9 and 1.96 TeV in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select events with two oppositely charged particles, assumed to be pions, with pseudorapidity $|η| < 1.3$ and with no other particles detected in $|η| < 5.9$. We require the $π^+π^-$ system to have rapidity $|y|<$ 1.0. The production mechanism of these events is expected to be dominated by double pomeron exchange, which constrains the quantum numbers of the central state. The data are potentially valuable for isoscalar meson spectroscopy and for understanding the pomeron in a region of transition between nonperturbative and perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The data extend up to dipion mass $M(π^+π^-)$ = 5000 MeV/$c^2$ and show resonance structures attributed to $f_0$ and $f_2(1270)$ mesons. From the $π^+π^-$ and $K^+K^-$ spectra, we place upper limits on exclusive $χ_{c0}(3415)$ production.

Measurement of indirect CP-violating asymmetries in $D^0\to K^+K^-$ and $D^0\to π^+π^-$ decays at CDF

We report a measurement of the indirect CP-violating asymmetries ($A_Γ$) between effective lifetimes of anticharm and charm mesons reconstructed in $D^0\to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0\to π^+π^-$ decays. We use the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab experiment and corresponding to $9.7$~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The strong-interaction decay $D^{*+}\to D^0π^+$ is used to identify the meson at production as $D^0$ or $\overline{D}^0$. We statistically subtract $D^0$ and $\overline{D}^0$ mesons originating from $b$-hadron decays and measure the yield asymmetry between anticharm and charm decays as a function of decay time. We measure $A_Γ(K^+K^-) = (-0.19 \pm 0.15 (stat) \pm 0.04 (syst))\%$ and $A_Γ(π^+π^-)= (-0.01 \pm 0.18 (stat) \pm 0.03 (syst))\%$. The results are consistent with the hypothesis of CP symmetry and their combination yields $A_Γ= (-0.12 \pm 0.12)\%$.

Measurement of the production and differential cross sections of $W^{+}W^{-}$ bosons in association with jets in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV

We present a measurement of the $W$-boson-pair production cross section in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy and the first measurement of the differential cross section as a function of jet multiplicity and leading-jet energy. The $W^{+}W^{-}$ cross section is measured in the final state comprising two charged leptons and neutrinos, where either charged lepton can be an electron or a muon. Using data collected by the CDF experiment corresponding to $9.7~\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, a total of $3027$ collision events consistent with $W^{+}W^{-}$ production are observed with an estimated background contribution of $1790\pm190$ events. The measured total cross section is $σ(p\bar{p} \rightarrow W^{+}W^{-}) = 14.0 \pm 0.6~(\rm{stat})^{+1.2}_{-1.0}~(\rm{syst})\pm0.8~(\rm{lumi})$ pb, consistent with the standard model prediction.

Measurement of the Single Top Quark Production Cross Section and |Vtb| in Events with One Charged Lepton, Large Missing Transverse Energy, and Jets at CDF

We report a measurement of single top quark production in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using a data set corresponding to 7.5 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select events consistent with the single top quark decay process t \to Wb \to lνb by requiring the presence of an electron or muon, a large imbalance of transverse momentum indicating the presence of a neutrino, and two or three jets including at least one originating from a bottom quark. An artificial neural network is used to discriminate the signal from backgrounds. We measure a single top quark production cross section of 3.04+0.57-0.53 pb and set a lower limit on the magnitude of the coupling between the top quark and bottom quark |Vtb| > 0.78 at the 95% credibility level.

Measurement of the top-quark mass in the ${t\bar{t}}$ dilepton channel using the full CDF Run II data set

We present a measurement of the top-quark mass in events containing two leptons (electrons or muons) with a large transverse momentum, two or more energetic jets, and a transverse-momentum imbalance. We use the full proton-antiproton collision data set collected by the CDF experiment during the Fermilab Tevatron Run~II at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.1 fb$^{-1}$. A special observable is exploited for an optimal reduction of the dominant systematic uncertainty, associated with the knowledge of the absolute energy of the hadronic jets. The distribution of this observable in the selected events is compared to simulated distributions of ${t\bar{t}}$ dilepton signal and background. We measure a value for the top-quark mass of $171.5\pm 1.9~{\rm (stat)}\pm 2.5~{\rm (syst)}$ GeV/$c^2$.

Observation of the rare $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

Search for Resonances Decaying to Top and Bottom Quarks with the CDF Experiment

We report on a search for charged massive resonances decaying to top ($t$) and bottom ($b$) quarks in the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV collected by the CDF~II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.5 $fb^{-1}$. No significant excess above the standard model (SM) background prediction is observed. We set 95% Bayesian credibility mass-dependent upper limits on the heavy charged particle production cross section times branching ratio to $t b$. Using a SM extension with a $W^{\prime}$ and left-right-symmetric couplings as a benchmark model, we constrain the $W^{\prime}$ mass and couplings in the 300 to 900 GeV/$c^2$ range. The limits presented here are the most stringent for a charged resonance with mass in the range 300 -- 600 GeV/$c^2$ decaying to top and bottom quarks.

We present a measurement of the $W$-boson mass, $M_W$, using data corresponding to 2.2/fb of integrated luminosity collected in ppbar collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The selected sample of 470126 $W\to eν$ candidates and 624708 $W\toμν$ candidates yields the measurement $M_W = 80387\pm 12$ (stat) $\pm 15$ (syst)$ = 80387 \pm 19$ MeV$/c^2$ . This is the most precise single measurement of the $W$-boson mass to date.

Evidence for $s$-channel Single-Top-Quark Production in Events with one Charged Lepton and two Jets at CDF

We report evidence for $s$-channel single-top-quark production in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}= 1.96 \mathrm{TeV}$ using a data set that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $9.4 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select events consistent with the $s$-channel process including two jets and one leptonically decaying $W$ boson. The observed significance is $3.8$ standard deviations with respect to the background-only prediction. Assuming a top-quark mass of $172.5 \mathrm{GeV}/c^2$, we measure the $s$-channel cross section to be $1.41^{+0.44}_{-0.42} \mathrm{pb}$.

Exclusion of exotic top-like quarks with -4/3 electric charge using jet-charge tagging in single-lepton ttbar events at CDF

We report on a measurement of the top-quark electric charge in ttbar events in which one W boson originating from the top-quark pair decays into leptons and the other into hadrons. The event sample was collected by the CDF II detector in sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions and corresponds to 5.6 fb^(-1). We find the data to be consistent with the standard model and exclude the existence of an exotic quark with -4/3 electric charge and mass of the conventional top quark at the 99% confidence level.

First Search for Exotic Z Boson Decays into Photons and Neutral Pions in Hadron Collisions

A search for forbidden and exotic Z boson decays in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented for the first time in hadron collisions, based on data corresponding to 10.0 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity from proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of signal is observed, and 95% credibility level Bayesian upper limits are set on the branching ratios of decays of the Z boson to a photon and neutral pion (which is detected as a photon), a pair of photons, and a pair of neutral pions. The observed branching ratio limits are 2.01 x 10^-5 for Z to π^0γ, 1.46 x 10^-5 for Z to γγ, and 1.52 x 10^-5 for Z to π^0π^0. The Z to π^0γ and Z to γγ limits improve by factors of 2.6 and 3.6, respectively, the most stringent results from other experiments. The Z to π^0π^0 branching ratio limit is the first experimental result on this decay.

Indirect measurement of $\sin^2 θ_W$ (or $M_W$) using $μ^+μ^-$ pairs from $γ^*/Z$ bosons produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV

Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process $p\bar{p} \rightarrow μ^+μ^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson. The forward-backward asymmetry in the polar-angle distribution of the $μ^-$ as a function of the invariant mass of the $μ^+μ^-$ pair is used to obtain the effective leptonic determination $\sin^2 θ^{lept}_{eff}$ of the electroweak-mixing parameter $\sin^2 θ_W$, from which the value of $\sin^2 θ_W$ is derived assuming the standard model. The measurement sample, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), corresponds to 9.2 fb-1 of integrated luminosity from $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV, and is the full CDF Run II data set. The value of $\sin^2 θ^{lept}_{eff}$ is found to be 0.2315 +- 0.0010, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined in quadrature. When interpreted within the context of the standard model using the on-shell renormalization scheme, where $\sin^2 θ_W = 1 - M_W^2/M_Z^2$, the measurement yields $\sin^2 θ_W$ = 0.2233 +- 0.0009, or equivalently a W-boson mass of 80.365 +- 0.047 GeV/c^2. The value of the W-boson mass is in agreement with previous determinations in electron-positron collisions and at the Tevatron collider.

We measure the inclusive forward-backward asymmetry of the charged-lepton pseudorapidities from top-quark pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions, and decaying to final states that contain two charged leptons (electrons or muons), using data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. With an integrated luminosity of 9.1 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$, the leptonic forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{\text{FB}}^{\ell}$, is measured to be $0.072 \pm 0.060$ and the leptonic pair forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{\text{FB}}^{\ell\ell}$, is measured to be $0.076 \pm 0.082$, compared with the standard model predictions of $A_{\text{FB}}^{\ell} = 0.038 \pm 0.003$ and $A_{\text{FB}}^{\ell\ell} = 0.048 \pm 0.004$, respectively. Additionally, we combine the $A_{\text{FB}}^{\ell}$ result with a previous determination from a final state with a single lepton and hadronic jets and obtain $A_{\text{FB}}^{\ell} = 0.090^{+0.028}_{-0.026}$.

Measurement of the Top-Quark Mass in the All-Hadronic Channel using the full CDF data set

The top-quark mass M_top is measured using top quark-antiquark pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV and decaying into a fully hadronic final state. The full data set collected with the CDFII detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.3 fb-1, is used. Events are selected that have six to eight jets, at least one of which is identified as having originated from a b quark. In addition, a multivariate algorithm, containing multiple kinematic variables as inputs, is used to discriminate signal events from background events due to QCD multijet production. Templates for the reconstructed top-quark mass are combined in a likelihood fit to measure M_top with a simultaneous calibration of the jet-energy scale. A value of M_top = 175.07+- 1.19(stat)+1.55-1.58(syst) GeV/c^2 is obtained for the top-quark mass.

We report final measurements of direct $\mathit{CP}$--violating asymmetries in charmless decays of neutral bottom hadrons to pairs of charged hadrons with the upgraded Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using the complete $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions data set, corresponding to 9.3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, we measure $\mathcal{A}(Λ^0_b \rightarrow pπ^{-}) = +0.06 \pm 0.07\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.03\mathrm{(syst)}$ and $\mathcal{A}(Λ^0_b \rightarrow pK^{-}) = -0.10 \pm 0.08\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.04\mathrm{(syst)}$, compatible with no asymmetry. In addition we measure the $\mathit{CP}$--violating asymmetries in $B^0_s \rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}$ and $B^0 \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}$ decays to be $\mathcal{A}(B^0_s \rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}) = +0.22 \pm 0.07\mathrm{stat)} \pm 0.02\mathrm{(syst)}$ and $\mathcal{A}(B^0 \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}) = -0.083\pm 0.013 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.004\mathrm{(syst)}$, respectively, which are significantly different from zero and consistent with current world averages.

Search for $s$-channel Single Top Quark Production in the Missing Energy Plus Jets Sample using the Full CDF II Data Set

The first search for single top quark production from the exchange of an $s$-channel virtual $W$ boson using events with an imbalance in the total transverse momentum, $b$-tagged jets, and no identified leptons is presented. The full data set collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb$^{-1}$ from Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV, is used. Assuming the electroweak production of top quarks of mass 172.5 GeV/$c^2$ in the $s$-channel, a cross section of $1.12_{-0.57}^{+0.61}$ (stat+syst) pb, with a significance of 1.9 standard deviations, is measured. This measurement is combined with a previous result obtained from events with an imbalance in total transverse momentum, $b$-tagged jets, and exactly one identified lepton, yielding a cross section of $1.36_{-0.32}^{+0.37}$ (stat+syst) pb, with a significance of 4.2 standard deviations.

Studies of high-transverse momentum jet substructure and top quarks produced in 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions

Results of a study of the substructure of the highest transverse momentum (pT) jets observed by the CDF collaboration are presented. Events containing at least one jet with pT > 400 GeV/c in a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.95 inverse fb, collected in 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, are selected. A study of the jet mass, angularity, and planar-flow distributions is presented, and the measurements are compared with predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics. A search for boosted top-quark production is also described, leading to a 95% confidence level upper limit of 38 fb on the production cross section of top quarks with pT > 400 GeV/c.

Study of orbitally excited $B$ mesons and evidence for a new $Bπ$ resonance

Using the full CDF Run II data sample, we report evidence for a new resonance, which we refer to as $B(5970)$, found simultaneously in the $B^0π^+$ and $B^+π^-$ mass distributions with a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. We further report the first study of resonances consistent with orbitally excited $B^{+}$ mesons and an updated measurement of the properties of orbitally excited $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ mesons. We measure the masses and widths of all states, as well as the relative production rates of $B_1$, $B_2^*$, and $B(5970)$ states and the branching fraction of the $B_{s2}^{*0}$ state to either $B^{*+} K^-$ and $B^{+} K^-$. Furthermore, we measure the production rates of the orbitally excited $B^{0,+}$ states relative to the $B^{0,+}$ ground state. The masses of the new $B(5970)$ resonances are $5978\pm5(\textrm{stat})\pm12(\textrm{syst}) \textrm{ MeV/c}^{2}$ for the neutral state and $5961\pm5(\textrm{stat})\pm12(\textrm{syst}) \textrm{ MeV/c}^{2}$ for the charged state, assuming that the resonance decays into $Bπ$ final states. The properties of the orbitally excited and the new $B(5970)^{0,+}$ states are compatible with isospin symmetry.

Study of Top-Quark Production and Decays involving a Tau Lepton at CDF and Limits on a Charged-Higgs Boson Contribution

We present an analysis of top-antitop quark production and decay into a tau lepton, tau neutrino, and bottom quark using data from $9 {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Dilepton events, where one lepton is an energetic electron or muon and the other a hadronically-decaying tau lepton, originating from proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV$ are used. A top-antitop quark production cross section of $8.1 \pm 2.1 {\rm pb}$ is measured, assuming standard-model top-quark decays. By separately identifying for the first time the single-tau and the ditau components, we measure the branching fraction of the top quark into tau lepton, tau neutrino, and bottom quark to be $(9.6 \pm 2.8) %$. The branching fraction of top-quark decays into a charged Higgs boson and a bottom quark, which would imply violation of lepton universality, is limited to be less than $5.9%$ at $95%$ confidence level.

A Direct Measurement of the Total Decay Width of the Top Quark

We present a measurement of the total decay width of the top quark using events with top-antitop-quark pair candidates reconstructed in the final state with one charged lepton and four or more hadronic jets. We use the full Tevatron Run II data set of $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the CDF II detector. The top-quark mass and the mass of the hadronically-decaying $W$ boson are reconstructed for each event and compared with distributions derived from simulated signal and background samples to extract the top-quark width (\gmt) and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets with {\it in-situ} calibration. For a top-quark mass $\mtop = \gevcc{172.5}$, we find $1.10<\gmt<\gev{4.05}$ at 68% confidence level, which is in agreement with the standard-model expectation of \gev{1.3} and is the most precise direct measurement of the top-quark width to date.

A signature-based search for delayed photons in exclusive photon plus missing transverse energy events from $p \bar{p}$ collisions with $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV

We present the first signature-based search for delayed photons using an exclusive photon plus missing transverse energy final state. Events are reconstructed in a data sample from the CDF II detector corresponding to $6.3 \text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions. Candidate events are selected if they contain a photon with an arrival time in the detector larger than expected from a promptly-produced photon. The mean number of events from standard model sources predicted by the data-driven background model based on the photon timing distribution is $286 \pm 24$. A total of 322 events are observed. A $p$-value of 12% is obtained, showing consistency of the data with standard model predictions.

Combination of CDF and D0 W-Boson Mass Measurements

We summarize and combine direct measurements of the mass of the $W$ boson in $\sqrt{s} = 1.96 \text{TeV}$ proton-antiproton collision data collected by CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Earlier measurements from CDF and D0 are combined with the two latest, more precise measurements: a CDF measurement in the electron and muon channels using data corresponding to $2.2 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, and a D0 measurement in the electron channel using data corresponding to $4.3 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The resulting Tevatron average for the mass of the $W$ boson is $\MW = 80\,387 \pm 16 \text{MeV}$. Including measurements obtained in electron-positron collisions at LEP yields the most precise value of $\MW = 80\,385 \pm 15 \text{MeV}$.

Coupled backward- and forward-propagating solitons in a composite right/left-handed transmission line

We study the coupling between backward- and forward-propagating wave modes, with the same group velocity, in a composite right/left-handed nonlinear transmission line. Using an asymptotic multiscale expansion technique, we derive a system of two coupled nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations governing the evolution of the envelopes of these modes. We show that this system supports a variety of backward- and forward propagating vector solitons, of the bright-bright, bright-dark and dark-bright type. Performing systematic numerical simulations in the framework of the original lattice that models the transmission line, we study the propagation properties of the derived vector soliton solutions. We show that all types of the predicted solitons exist, but differ on their robustness: only bright-bright solitons propagate undistorted for long times, while the other types are less robust, featuring shorter lifetimes. In all cases, our analytical predictions are in a very good agreement with the results of the simulations, at least up to times of the order of the solitons' lifetimes.

Interactions of solitons with a Gaussian barrier: Splitting and recombination in quasi-1D and 3D

The interaction of matter-wave solitons with a potential barrier is a fundamentally important problem, and the splitting and subsequent recombination of the soliton by the barrier is the essence of soliton matter-wave interferometry. We demonstrate the three-dimensional (3D) character of the interactions in the case relevant to ongoing experiments, where the number of atoms in the soliton is sufficiently large that the soliton is close to collapse. The mean-field description is quite accurate, but the proximity to the collapse threshold makes the use of the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) irrelevant. We examine the soliton dynamics in the framework of the effectively 1D nonpolynomial Schr{ö}dinger equation (NPSE), which admits the collapse in a modified form, and in parallel we use the full 3D GPE. Both approaches produce results which are very different from those produced in recent work which used the 1D cubic GPE. The features observed in both the NPSE and the 3D GPE include (a) an increase in the first reflection coefficient for increasing barrier height and decreasing atom number; (b) strong modulation in the secondary reflection/recombination probability vs. barrier height; (c) a pronounced asymmetry in the oscillation amplitudes of the transmitted and reflected fragments; (d) an enhancement of the transverse excitations as the number of atoms is increased. We also explore effects produced by variations of the barrier width and outcomes of the secondary collision upon phase imprinting on the fragment in one arm of the interferometer.

We employ the Legendre polynomials to characterize the shape of the differential cross section at the parton level. The observed Legendre coefficients are in good agreement with the prediction of the next-to-leading-order standard-model calculation, with the exception of an excess linear-term coefficient, a1 = 0.40 +- 0.12, compared to the standard-model prediction of a1 = 0.15^{+0.07}_{-0.03}.

Measurement of the Mass Difference Between Top and Anti-top Quarks at CDF

We use the full data set of Tevatron $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the CDF II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb$^{-1}$. We estimate event-by-event the mass difference to construct templates for top-quark signal events and background events. The resulting mass difference distribution of data compared to signal and background templates using a likelihood fit yields $ΔM_{top} = {M}_{t} - {M}_{\bar{t}} = -1.95 $pm$ 1.11 (stat) $pm$ 0.59 (syst)$ and is in agreement with the standard model prediction of no mass difference.

Measurement of the top quark forward-backward production asymmetry and its dependence on event kinematic properties

We present new measurements of the inclusive forward-backward ttbar production asymmetry, AFB, and its dependence on several properties of the ttbar system. The measurements are performed with the full Tevatron data set recorded with the CDF II detector during ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb^(-1). We measure the asymmetry using the rapidity difference Delta-y=y_(t)-y_(tbar). Parton-level results are derived, yielding an inclusive asymmetry of 0.164+/-0.047 (stat + syst). We observe a linear dependence of AFB on the top-quark pair mass M(ttbar) and the rapidity difference |Delta-y| at detector and parton levels. Assuming the standard model, the probabilities to observe the measured values or larger for the detector-level dependencies are 7.4*10^(-3) and 2.2*10^(-3) for M(ttbar) and |Delta-y| respectively. Lastly, we study the dependence of the asymmetry on the transverse momentum of the ttbar system at the detector level. These results are consistent with previous lower-precision measurements and provide additional quantification of the functional dependencies of the asymmetry.

Nonlinear localized modes in two-dimensional electrical lattices

We report the observation of spontaneous localization of energy in two spatial dimensions in the context of nonlinear electrical lattices. Both stationary and traveling self-localized modes were generated experimentally and theoretically in a family of two-dimensional square, as well as hon- eycomb lattices composed of 6x6 elements. Specifically, we find regions in driver voltage and frequency where stationary discrete breathers, also known as intrinsic localized modes (ILM), exist and are stable due to the interplay of damping and spatially homogeneous driving. By introduc- ing additional capacitors into the unit cell, these lattices can controllably induce traveling discrete breathers. When more than one such ILMs are experimentally generated in the lattice, the interplay of nonlinearity, discreteness and wave interactions generate a complex dynamics wherein the ILMs attempt to maintain a minimum distance between one another. Numerical simulations show good agreement with experimental results, and confirm that these phenomena qualitatively carry over to larger lattice sizes.

Observation of D0-D0bar Mixing using the CDF II Detector

We measure the time dependence of the ratio of decay rates for D0 -> K+ pi- to the Cabibbo-favored decay D0 -> K- pi+. The charge conjugate decays are included. A signal of 3.3 x 10^4 D*+ -> pi+ D0, D0 -> K+ pi- decays is obtained with D0 proper decay times between 0.75 and 10 mean D0 lifetimes. The data were recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.6 fb-1 for p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. Assuming CP conservation, we search for D0-D0bar mixing and measure the mixing parameters to be R_D = (3.51 +/- 0.35) x 10^{-3}, y' = (4.3 +/- 4.3) x 10^{-3}, and x'^2 = (0.08 +/- 0.18) x 10^{-3}. We report Bayesian probability intervals in the x'^2 - y' plane and find that the significance of excluding the no-mixing hypothesis is equivalent to 6.1 Gaussian standard deviations, providing the second observation of D0-D0bar mixing from a single experiment.

PT-Symmetric Dimer of Coupled Nonlinear Oscillators

We provide a systematic analysis of a prototypical nonlinear oscillator system respecting PT-symmetry i.e., one of them has gain and the other an equal and opposite amount of loss. Starting from the linear limit of the system, we extend considerations to the nonlinear case for both soft and hard cubic nonlinearities identifying symmetric and anti-symmetric breather solutions, as well as symmetry breaking variants thereof. We propose a reduction of the system to a Schrödinger type PT-symmetric dimer, whose detailed earlier understanding can explain many of the phenomena observed herein, including the PT phase transition. Nevertheless, there are also significant parametric as well as phenomenological potential differences between the two models and we discuss where these arise and where they are most pronounced. Finally, we also provide examples of the evolution dynamics of the different states in their regimes of instability.

PT-symmetry Management in Oligomer Systems

We study the effects of management of the PT-symmetric part of the potential within the setting of Schrödinger dimer and trimer oligomer systems. This is done by rapidly modulating in time the gain/loss profile. This gives rise to a number of interesting properties of the system, which are explored at the level of an averaged equation approach. Remarkably, this rapid modulation provides for a controllable expansion of the region of exact PT-symmetry, depending on the strength and frequency of the imposed modulation. The resulting averaged models are analyzed theoretically and their exact stationary solutions are translated into time-periodic solutions through the averaging reduction. These are, in turn, compared with the exact periodic solutions of the full non-autonomous PT-symmetry managed problem and very good agreement is found between the two.

Search for new physics in trilepton events and limits on the associated chargino-neutralino production at CDF

We perform a search for new physics using final states consisting of three leptons and a large imbalance in transverse momentum resulting from proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use data corresponding to 5.8 fb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider. Our main objective is to investigate possible new low-momentum (down to 5 GeV/c) multi-leptonic final states not investigated by LHC experiments. Relative to previous CDF analyses, we expand the geometric and kinematic coverage of electrons and muons and utilize tau leptons that decay hadronically. Inclusion of tau leptons is particularly important for supersymmetry (SUSY) searches. The results are consistent with standard-model predictions. By optimizing our event selection to increase sensitivity to the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) SUSY model, we set limits on the associated production of chargino and neutralino, the SUSY partners of the electroweak gauge bosons. We exclude cross sections up to 0.1 pb and chargino masses up to 168 GeV/c^2 at 95% CL, for a suited set of mSUGRA parameters. We also exclude a region of the two-dimensional space of the masses of the neutralino and the supersymmetric partner of the tau lepton, not previously excluded at the Tevatron.

Search for the production of ZW and ZZ boson pairs decaying into charged leptons and jets in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

We present a measurement of the production cross section for ZW and ZZ boson pairs in final states with a pair of charged leptons, from the decay of a Z boson, and at least two jets, from the decay of a W or Z boson, using the full sample of proton-antiproton collisions recorded with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to 8.9 fb^(-1) of integrated luminosity. We increase the sensitivity to vector boson decays into pairs of quarks using a neural network discriminant that exploits the differences between the spatial spread of energy depositions and charged-particle momenta contained within the jet of particles originating from quarks and gluons. Additionally, we employ new jet energy corrections to Monte Carlo simulations that account for differences in the observed energy scales for quark and gluon jets. The number of signal events is extracted through a simultaneous fit to the dijet mass spectrum in three classes of events: events likely to contain jets with a heavy-quark decay, events likely to contain jets originating from light quarks, and events that fail these identification criteria. We determine the production cross section to be 2.5 +2.0 -1.0 pb (< 6.1 pb at the 95% confidence level), consistent with the standard model prediction of 5.1 pb.

We present a search for a standard model Higgs boson decaying to two $W$ bosons that decay to leptons using the full data set collected with the CDF II detector in $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV $p\bar{p}$ collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.7 fb${}^{-1}$. We obtain no evidence for production of a standard model Higgs boson with mass between 110 and 200 GeV/$c^2$, and place upper limits on the production cross section within this range. We exclude standard model Higgs boson production at the 95% confidence level in the mass range between 149 and 172 GeV/$c^2$, while expecting to exclude, in the absence of signal, the range between 155 and 175 GeV/$c^2$. We also interpret the search in terms of standard model Higgs boson production in the presence of a fourth generation of fermions and within the context of a fermiophobic Higgs boson model. For the specific case of a standard model-like Higgs boson in the presence of fourth-generation fermions, we exclude at the 95% confidence level Higgs boson production in the mass range between 124 and 200 GeV/$c^2$, while expecting to exclude, in the absence of signal, the range between 124 and 221 GeV/$c^2$.

Beating dark-dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Motivated by recent experimental results, we study beating dark-dark solitons as a prototypical coherent structure that emerges in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We showcase their connection to dark- bright solitons via SO(2) rotation, and infer from it both their intrinsic beating frequency and their frequency of oscillation inside a parabolic trap. We identify them as exact periodic orbits in the Manakov limit of equal inter- and intra-species nonlinearity strengths with and without the trap and showcase the persistence of such states upon weak deviations from this limit. We also consider large deviations from the Manakov limit illustrating that this breathing state may be broken apart into dark-antidark soliton states. Finally, we consider the dynamics and interactions of two beating dark-dark solitons in the absence and in the presence of the trap, inferring their typically repulsive interaction.

Breathers for the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonlinear hopping

We discuss the existence of breathers and lower bounds on their power, in nonlinear Schrödinger lattices with nonlinear hopping. Our methods extend from a simple variational approach to fixed point arguments, deriving lower bounds for the power which can serve as a threshold for the existence of breather solutions. Qualitatively, the theoretical results justify non-existence of breathers below the prescribed lower bounds of the power which depend on the dimension, the parameters of the lattice as well as of the frequency of breathers. In the case of supercritical power nonlinearities we investigate the interplay of these estimates with the optimal constant of the discrete interpolation inequality. Improvements of the general estimates, taking into account the localization of the true breather solutions are derived. Numerical studies in the one dimensional lattice corroborate the theoretical bounds and illustrate that in certain parameter regimes of physical significance, the estimates can serve as accurate predictors of the breather power and its dependence on the various system parameters.

Combination of CDF and D0 measurements of the W boson helicity in top quark decays

Combination of the top-quark mass measurements from the Tevatron collider

The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle, with a mass about 40 times larger than the mass of its isospin partner, the bottom quark. It decays almost 100% of the time to a $W$ boson and a bottom quark. Using top-antitop pairs at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, the CDF and {\dzero} collaborations have measured the top quark's mass in different final states for integrated luminosities of up to 5.8 fb$^{-1}$. This paper reports on a combination of these measurements that results in a more precise value of the mass than any individual decay channel can provide. It describes the treatment of the systematic uncertainties and their correlations. The mass value determined is $173.18 \pm 0.56 \thinspace ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.75 \thinspace ({\rm syst})$ GeV or $173.18 \pm 0.94$ GeV, which has a precision of $\pm 0.54%$, making this the most precise determination of the top quark mass.

Escape Dynamics in the Discrete Repulsive ϕ^4-Model

We study deterministic escape dynamics in the framework of the discrete Klein-Gordon modelwith a repulsive quartic on-site potential. Using a combination of analytical techniques, based on differential and algebraic inequalities and selected numerical illustrations, we first derive conditions for collapse of an initially excited single-site unit, for both the Hamiltonian and the linearly damped versions of the system and showcase different potential fates of the single-site excitation, such as the possibility to be "pulled back" from outside the well or to "drive over" the barrier some of its neighbors. Next, we study the evolution of a uniform (small) segment of the chain and, in turn, consider the conditions that support its escape and collapse of the chain. Finally, our path from one to the few and finally to the many excited sites is completed by a modulational stability analysis and the exploration of its connection to the escape process for plane wave initial data. This reveals the existence of three distinct regimes, namely modulational stability, modulational instability without escape and, finally, modulational instability accompanied by escape. These are corroborated by direct numerical simulations. In each of the above cases, the variations of the relevant model parameters enable a consideration of the interplay of discreteness and nonlinearity within the observed phenomenology.

We report a measurement of time-integrated CP-violation asymmetries in the resonant substructure of the three-body decay D0 to Ks pi+ pi- using CDF II data corresponding to 6.0 invfb of integrated luminosity from Tevatron ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The charm mesons used in this analysis come from D*+(2010) to D0 pi+ and D*-(2010) to D0bar pi-, where the production flavor of the charm meson is determined by the charge of the accompanying pion. We apply a Dalitz-amplitude analysis for the description of the dynamic decay structure and use two complementary approaches, namely a full Dalitz-plot fit employing the isobar model for the contributing resonances and a model-independent bin-by-bin comparison of the D0 and D0bar Dalitz plots. We find no CP-violation effects and measure an asymmetry of ACP = (-0.05 +- 0.57 (stat) +- 0.54 (syst))% for the overall integrated CP-violation asymmetry, consistent with the standard model prediction.

Measurement of the Top Quark Mass in the All-Hadronic Mode at CDF

We present a measurement of the top quark mass (Mtop) in the all-hadronic decay channel using 5.8 fb^{-1} of proton-antiproton data collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Events with 6 to 8 jets are selected by a neural network algorithm and by the requirement that at least one of the jets is tagged as a b quark jet. The measurement is performed by a likelihood fit technique, which determines simultaneously Mtop and the jet energy scale (JES) calibration. The fit yields a value of 172.5 +- 1.4(stat) +-1.0(JES) +-1.1(syst) GeV/c^2.

Multibreathers in Klein-Gordon chains with interactions beyond nearest neighbors

We study the existence and stability of multibreathers in Klein-Gordon chains with interactions that are not restricted to nearest neighbors. We provide a general framework where such long range effects can be taken into consideration for arbitrarily varying (as a function of the node distance) linear couplings between arbitrary sets of neighbors in the chain. By examining special case examples such as three-site breathers with next-nearest-neighbors, we find {\it crucial} modifications to the nearest-neighbor picture of one-dimensional oscillators being excited either in- or anti-phase. Configurations with nontrivial phase profiles, arise, as well as spontaneous symmetry breaking (pitchfork) bifurcations, when these states emerge from (or collide with) the ones with standard (0 or $π$) phase difference profiles. Similar bifurcations, both of the supercritical and of the subcritical type emerge when examining four-site breathers with either next-nearest-neighbor or even interactions with the three-nearest one-dimensional neighbors. The latter setting can be thought of as a prototype for the two-dimensional building block, namely a square of lattice nodes, which is also examined. Our analytical predictions are found to be in very good agreement with numerical results.

Observation of Exclusive Gamma Gamma Production in p pbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

We have observed exclusive γγproduction in proton-antiproton collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, using data from 1.11 \pm 0.07 fb^{-1} integrated luminosity taken by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab. We selected events with two electromagnetic showers, each with transverse energy E_T > 2.5 GeV and pseudorapidity |η| < 1.0, with no other particles detected in -7.4 < η< +7.4. The two showers have similar E_T and azimuthal angle separation Δϕ\sim π; 34 events have two charged particle tracks, consistent with the QED process p \bar{p} to p + e^+e^- + \bar{p} by two-photon exchange, while 43 events have no charged tracks. The number of these events that are exclusive π^0π^0 is consistent with zero and is < 15 at 95% C.L. The cross section for p\bar{p} to p+γγ+\bar{p} with |η(γ)| < 1.0 and E_T(γ) > 2.5$ GeV is 2.48^{+0.40}_{-0.35}(stat)^{+0.40}_{-0.51}(syst) pb.

Precision Top-Quark Mass Measurements at CDF

We present a precision measurement of the top-quark mass using the full sample of Tevatron $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions collected by the CDF II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 $fb^{-1}$. Using a sample of $t\bar{t}$ candidate events decaying into the lepton+jets channel, we obtain distributions of the top-quark masses and the invariant mass of two jets from the $W$ boson decays from data. We then compare these distributions to templates derived from signal and background samples to extract the top-quark mass and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets with {\it in situ} calibration. The likelihood fit of the templates from signal and background events to the data yields the single most-precise measurement of the top-quark mass, $\mtop = 172.85 $\pm$ 0.71 (stat) $\pm$ 0.85 (syst) GeV/c^{2}.$

Scattering of atomic dark-bright solitons from narrow impurities

In this work, we study the collision of an atomic dark-bright soliton, in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate, with a Gaussian barrier or well. First, we present the results of an experiment, illustrating the classical particle phenomenology (transmission or reflection) in the case of an equal barrier or well in both components. Then, motivated by the experimental observations, we perform systematic simulations considering not only the case of equal heights, but also the considerably more complex setting, where the potential affects only one of the two components. We systematically classify the ensuing cases within a two-parameter diagram of barrier amplitudes in the two components, and provide intuitive explanations for the resulting observations, as well as of their variations as the size of the barrier changes.

Search for a low mass Standard Model Higgs boson in the tau-tau decay channel in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV

We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into pairs of tau leptons in $p\bar{p}$ collisions produced by the Tevatron at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV. The analyzed data sample was recorded by the CDFII detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 6.0 fb$^{-1}$. The search is performed in the final state with one tau decaying leptonically and the second one identified through its semi-hadronic decay.Since no significant excess is observed, a 95% credibility level upper limit on the production cross section times branching ratio to the tau-tau final state is set for hypothetical Higgs boson masses between 100 and 150 GeV/$c^2$. For a Higgs boson of 120 GeV/$c^2$ the observed (expected) limit is 14.6 (15.3) the predicted value.

Search for anomalous production of multiple leptons in association with W and Z bosons at CDF

This paper presents a search for anomalous production of multiple low-energy leptons in association with a W or Z boson using events collected at the CDF experiment corresponding to 5.1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. This search is sensitive to a wide range of topologies with low-momentum leptons, including those with the leptons near one another. The observed rates of production of additional electrons and muons are compared with the standard model predictions. No indications of phenomena beyond the standard model are found. A 95% confidence level limit is presented on the production cross section for a benchmark model of supersymmetric hidden-valley Higgs production. Particle identification efficiencies are also provided to enable the calculation of limits on additional models.

Search for Standard Model Higgs Boson Production in Association with a W Boson Using a Matrix Element Technique at CDF in p-bar{p} Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV

This paper presents a search for standard model Higgs boson production in association with a $W$ boson using events recorded by the CDF experiment in a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb-1. The search is performed using a matrix element technique in which the signal and background hypotheses are used to create a powerful discriminator. The discriminant output distributions for signal and background are fit to the observed events using a binned likelihood approach to search for the Higgs boson signal. We find no evidence for a Higgs boson, and 95% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production rate. The observed limits range from 3.5 to 37.6 relative to the standard model expectation for Higgs boson masses between 100 and 150 GeV. The 95% C.L. expected limit is estimated from the median of an ensemble of simulated experiments and varies between 2.9 and 32.7 relative to the production rate predicted by the standard model over the Higgs boson mass range studied.

Search for the Higgs boson in the all-hadronic final state using the full CDF data set

This paper reports the result of a search for the standard model Higgs boson in events containing four reconstructed jets associated with quarks. For masses below 135GeV/c2, Higgs boson decays to bottom-antibottom quark pairs are dominant and result primarily in two hadronic jets. An additional two jets can be produced in the hadronic decay of a W or Z boson produced in association with the Higgs boson, or from the incoming quarks that produced the Higgs boson through the vector-boson fusion process. The search is performed using a sample of \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb-1 recorded by the CDF II detector. The data are in agreement with the background model and 95% credibility level upper limits on Higgs boson production are set as a function of the Higgs boson mass. The median expected (observed) limit for a 125GeV/c2 Higgs boson is 11.0 (9.0) times the predicted standard model rate.

Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson Produced in Association with a $Z$ Boson in $p\bar{p}$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV

We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a $Z$ boson, using up to 7.9 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from $p\bar{p}$ collisions collected with the CDF II detector. We utilize several novel techniques, including multivariate lepton selection, multivariate trigger parametrization, and a multi-stage signal discriminant consisting of specialized functions trained to distinguish individual backgrounds. By increasing acceptance and enhancing signal discrimination, these techniques have significantly improved the sensitivity of the analysis above what was expected from a larger dataset alone. We observe no significant evidence for a signal, and we set limits on the $ZH$ production cross section. Symmetry-breaking Effects for Polariton Condensates in Double-Well Potentials

We study the existence, stability, and dynamics of symmetric and anti-symmetric states of quasi-one-dimensional polariton condensates in double-well potentials, in the presence of nonresonant pumping and nonlinear damping. Some prototypical features of the system, such as the bifurcation of asymmetric solutions, are similar to the Hamiltonian analog of the double-well system considered in the realm of atomic condensates. Nevertheless, there are also some nontrivial differences including, e.g., the unstable nature of both the parent and the daughter branch emerging in the relevant pitchfork bifurcation for slightly larger values of atom numbers. Another interesting feature that does not appear in the atomic condensate case is that the bifurcation for attractive interactions is slightly sub-critical instead of supercritical. These conclusions of the bifurcation analysis are corroborated by direct numerical simulations examining the dynamics of the system in the unstable regime.

Discrete breathers in a nonlinear electric line: Modeling, Computation and Experiment

We study experimentally and numerically the existence and stability properties of discrete breathers in a periodic nonlinear electric line. The electric line is composed of single cell nodes, containing a varactor diode and an inductor, coupled together in a periodic ring configuration through inductors and driven uniformly by a harmonic external voltage source. A simple model for each cell is proposed by using a nonlinear form for the varactor characteristics through the current and capacitance dependence on the voltage. For an electrical line composed of 32 elements, we find the regions, in driver voltage and frequency, where $n$-peaked breather solutions exist and characterize their stability. The results are compared to experimental measurements with good quantitative agreement. We also examine the spontaneous formation of $n$-peaked breathers through modulational instability of the homogeneous steady state. The competition between different discrete breathers seeded by the modulational instability eventually leads to stationary $n$-peaked solutions whose precise locations is seen to sensitively depend on the initial conditions.

Josephson tunneling of dark solitons in a double-well potential

We study the dynamics of matter waves in an effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential. We consider in particular the case when one of the double wells confines excited states. Similarly to the known ground state oscillations, the states can tunnel between the wells experiencing the physics known for electrons in a Josephson junction, or be self-trapped. As the existence of dark solitons in a harmonic trap are continuations of such non-ground state excitations, one can view the Josephson-like oscillations as tunnelings of dark solitons. Numerical existence and stability analysis based on the full equation is performed, where it is shown that such tunneling can be stable. Through a numerical path following method, unstable tunneling is also obtained in different parameter regions. A coupled-mode system is derived and compared to the numerical observations. Regions of (in)stability of Josephson tunneling are discussed and highlighted. Finally, we outline an experimental scheme designed to explore such dark soliton dynamics in the laboratory.

Nonlinear Excitations, Stability Inversions and Dissipative Dynamics in Quasi-one-dimensional Polariton Condensates

We consider the existence, stability and dynamics of the ground state and nonlinear excitations, in the form of dark solitons, for a quasi-one-dimensional polariton condensate in the presence of pumping and nonlinear damping. We find a series of remarkable features that can be directly contrasted to the case of the typically energy-conserving ultracold alkali-atom Bose-Einstein condensates. For some sizeable parameter ranges, the nodeless ("ground") state becomes {\it unstable} towards the formation of {\em stable} nonlinear single or {\em multi} dark-soliton excitations. It is also observed that for suitable parametric choices, the instability of single dark solitons can nucleate multi-dark-soliton states. Also, for other parametric regions, {\em stable asymmetric} sawtooth-like solutions exist. Finally, we consider the dragging of a defect through the condensate and the interference of two initially separated condensates, both of which are capable of nucleating dark multi-soliton dynamical states.

Quasi-discrete microwave solitons in a split ring resonator-based left-handed coplanar waveguide

We study the propagation of quasi-discrete microwave solitons in a nonlinear left-handed coplanar waveguide coupled with split ring resonators. By considering the relevant transmission line analogue, we derive a nonlinear lattice model which is studied analytically by means of a quasi-discrete approximation. We derive a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation, and find that the system supports bright envelope soliton solutions in a relatively wide subinterval of the left-handed frequency band. We perform systematic numerical simulations, in the framework of the nonlinear lattice model, to study the propagation properties of the quasi-discrete microwave solitons. Our numerical findings are in good agreement with the analytical predictions, and suggest that the predicted structures are quite robust and may be observed in experiments.

Search for Standard Model Higgs Boson Production in Association with a W Boson at CDF

We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson production in association with a $W$ boson in proton-antiproton collisions ($p\bar{p}\rightarrow W^\pm H \rightarrow \ellνb\bar{b}$) at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The search employs data collected with the CDF II detector which correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 2.7 fb$^{-1}$. We recorded this data with two kinds of triggers. The first kind required high-p$_T$ charged leptons and the second required both missing transverse energy and jets. The search selects events consistent with a signature of a single lepton ($e^\pm/μ^\pm$), missing transverse energy, and two jets. Jets corresponding to bottom quarks are identified with a secondary vertex tagging method and a jet probability tagging method. Kinematic information is fed in an artificial neural network to improve discrimination between signal and background. The search finds that both the observed number of events and the neural network output distributions are consistent with the standard model background expectations, and sets 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio. The limits are expressed as a ratio to the standard model production rate. The limits range from 3.6 (4.3 expected) to 61.1 (43.2 expected) for Higgs masses from 100 to 150 GeV/$c^{2}$, respectively.

Breathers and kinks in a simulated crystal experiment

We develop a simple 1D model for the scattering of an incoming particle hitting the surface of mica crystal, the transmission of energy through the crystal by a localized mode, and the ejection of atom(s) at the incident or distant face. This is the first attempt to model the experiment described in Russell and Eilbeck in 2007 (EPL, v. 78, 10004). Although very basic, the model shows many interesting features, for example a complicated energy dependent transition between breather modes and a kink mode, and multiple ejections at both incoming and distant surfaces. In addition, the effect of a heavier surface layer is modelled, which can lead to internal reflections of breathers or kinks at the crystal surface.

Dark-Bright Discrete Solitons: A Numerical Study of Existence, Stability and Dynamics

In the present work, we numerically explore the existence and stability properties of different types of configurations of dark-bright solitons, dark-bright soliton pairs and pairs of dark-bright and dark solitons in discrete settings, starting from the anti-continuum limit. We find that while single discrete dark-bright solitons have similar stability properties to discrete dark solitons, their pairs may only be stable if the bright components are in phase and are always unstable if the bright components are out of phase. Pairs of dark-bright solitons with dark ones have similar stability properties as individual dark or dark-bright ones. Lastly, we consider collisions between dark-bright solitons and between a dark-bright one and a dark one. Especially in the latter and in the regime where the underlying lattice structure matters, we find a wide range of potential dynamical outcomes depending on the initial soliton speed.

Multibreather and vortex breather stability in Klein--Gordon lattices: Equivalence between two different approaches

In this work, we revisit the question of stability of multibreather configurations, i.e., discrete breathers with multiple excited sites at the anti-continuum limit of uncoupled oscillators. We present two methods that yield quantitative predictions about the Floquet multipliers of the linear stability analysis around such exponentially localized in space, time-periodic orbits, based on the Aubry band method and the MacKay effective Hamiltonian method and prove that their conclusions are equivalent. Subsequently, we showcase the usefulness of the methods by a series of case examples including one-dimensional multi-breathers, and two-dimensional vortex breathers in the case of a lattice of linearly coupled oscillators with the Morse potential and in that of the discrete $ϕ^4$ model.

Regular and chaotic transport of discrete solitons in asymmetric potentials

Ratchet dynamics of topological solitons of the forced and damped discrete double sine-Gordon system are studied. Directed transport occurring both in regular and in chaotic regions of the phase space and its dependence on damping, amplitude and frequency of the driving, asymmetry parameter, coupling constant, has been extensively investigated. We show that the passage from ratchet phase-locked regime to chaotic ratchets occurs via a period doubling route to chaos and that, quite surprisingly, pinned states can exist inside phase-locking and chaotic transport regions for intermediate values of the coupling constant. The possibility to control chaotic discrete soliton ratchets by means of both small subharmonic signals and more general periodic drivings, has also been investigated.

Studying the Underlying Event in Drell-Yan and High Transverse Momentum Jet Production at the Tevatron

We study the underlying event in proton-antiproton collisions by examining the behavior of charged particles (transverse momentum pT > 0.5 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |η| < 1) produced in association with large transverse momentum jets (~2.2 fb-1) or with Drell-Yan lepton-pairs (~2.7 fb-1) in the Z-boson mass region (70 < M(pair) < 110 GeV/c2) as measured by CDF at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use the direction of the lepton-pair (in Drell-Yan production) or the leading jet (in high-pT jet production) in each event to define three regions of η-ϕspace; toward, away, and transverse, where ϕis the azimuthal scattering angle. For Drell-Yan production (excluding the leptons) both the toward and transverse regions are very sensitive to the underlying event. In high-pT jet production the transverse region is very sensitive to the underlying event and is separated into a MAX and MIN transverse region, which helps separate the hard component (initial and final-state radiation) from the beam-beam remnant and multiple parton interaction components of the scattering. The data are corrected to the particle level to remove detector effects and are then compared with several QCD Monte-Carlo models. The goal of this analysis is to provide data that can be used to test and improve the QCD Monte-Carlo models of the underlying event that are used to simulate hadron-hadron collisions.

A corresponding realization of a vanishing of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier allows for an experimentally observed enhanced mobility of the localized modes near the reversal point. Solitons in quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with competing dipolar and local interactions

We study families of one-dimensional matter-wave bright solitons supported by the competition of contact and dipole-dipole (DD) interactions of opposite signs. Soliton families are found, and their stability is investigated in the free space, and in the presence of an optical lattice (OL). Free-space solitons may exist with an arbitrarily weak local attraction if the strength of the DD repulsion is fixed. In the case of the DD attraction, solitons do not exist beyond a maximum value of the local-repulsion strength. In the system which includes the OL, a stability region for \textit{subfundamental solitons} (SFSs) is found in the second finite bandgap. For the existence of gap solitons (GSs) under the attractive DD interaction, the contact repulsion must be strong enough. In the opposite case of the DD repulsion, GSs exist if the contact attraction is not too strong. Collisions between solitons in the free space are studied too. In the case of the local attraction, they merge or pass through each other at small and large velocities, respectively. In the presence of the local repulsion, slowly moving solitons bounce from each other.

Interlaced solitons and vortices in coupled DNLS lattices

In the present work, we propose a new set of coherent structures that arise in nonlinear dynamical lattices with more than one components, namely interlaced solitons. These are waveforms in which in the relevant anti-continuum limit, i.e. when the sites are uncoupled, one component has support where the other component does not. We illustrate systematically how one can combine dynamically stable unary patterns to create ones such for the binary case of two-components. In the one-dimensional setting, we provide also a detailed theoretical analysis of the existence and stability of these waveforms, while in higher dimensions, where such analytical computations are far more involved, we resort to corresponding numerical computations. Lastly, we perform direct numerical simulations to showcase how these structures break up, when exponentially or oscillatorily unstable, to structures with a smaller number of participating sites.

Discrete moving breather collisions in a Klein-Gordon chain of oscillators

We study collision processes of moving breathers with the same frequency, traveling with opposite directions within a Klein-Gordon chain of oscillators. Two types of collisions have been analyzed: symmetric and non-symmetric, head-on collisions. For low enough frequency the outcome is strongly dependent of the dynamical states of the two colliding breathers just before the collision. For symmetric collisions, several results can be observed: breather generation, with the formation of a trapped breather and two new moving breathers; breather reflection; generation of two new moving breathers; and breather fusion bringing about a trapped breather. For non-symmetric collisions the possible results are: breather generation, with the formation of three new moving breathers; breather fusion, originating a new moving breather; breather trapping with also breather reflection; generation of two new moving breathers; and two new moving breathers traveling as a ligand state. Breather annihilation has never been observed.

Thresholds for breather solutions on the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with saturable and power nonlinearity

We consider the question of existence of periodic solutions (called breather solutions or discrete solitons) for the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with saturable and power nonlinearity. Theoretical and numerical results are proved concerning the existence and nonexistence of periodic solutions by a variational approach and a fixed point argument. In the variational approach we are restricted to DNLS lattices with Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is proved that there exists parameters (frequency or nonlinearity parameters) for which the corresponding minimizers satisfy explicit upper and lower bounds on the power. The numerical studies performed indicate that these bounds behave as thresholds for the existence of periodic solutions. The fixed point method considers the case of infinite lattices. Through this method, the existence of a threshold is proved in the case of saturable nonlinearity and an explicit theoretical estimate which is independent on the dimension is given. The numerical studies, testing the efficiency of the bounds derived by both methods, demonstrate that these thresholds are quite sharp estimates of a threshold value on the power needed for the the existence of a breather solution. This it justified by the consideration of limiting cases with respect to the size of the nonlinearity parameters and nonlinearity exponents.

We study the dynamics of moving discrete breathers in an interfaced piecewise DNA molecule. This is a DNA chain in which all the base pairs are identical and there exists an interface such that the base pairs dipole moments at each side are oriented in opposite directions. The Hamiltonian of the Peyrard--Bishop model is augmented with a term that includes the dipole--dipole coupling between base pairs. Numerical simulations show the existence of two dynamical regimes. If the translational kinetic energy of a moving breather launched towards the interface is below a critical value, it is trapped in a region around the interface collecting vibrational energy. For an energy larger than the critical value, the breather is transmitted and continues travelling along the double strand with lower velocity. Reflection phenomena never occur. The same study has been carried out when a single dipole is oriented in opposite direction to the other ones. When moving breathers collide with the single inverted dipole, the same effects appear. These results emphasize the importance of this simple type of local inhomogeneity as it creates a mechanism for the trapping of energy. Finally, the simulations show that, under favorable conditions, several launched moving breathers can be trapped successively at the interface region producing an accumulation of vibrational energy. Moreover, an additional colliding moving breather can produce a saturation of energy and a moving breather with all the accumulated energy is transmitted to the chain.

Radiationless Travelling Waves In Saturable Nonlinear Schrödinger Lattices

The longstanding problem of moving discrete solitary waves in nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger lattices is revisited. The context is photorefractive crystal lattices with saturable nonlinearity whose grand-canonical energy barrier vanishes for isolated coupling strength values. {\em Genuinely localised travelling waves} are computed as a function of the system parameters {\it for the first time}. The relevant solutions exist only for finite velocities.

Discrete peakons

We demonstrate for the first time the possibility for explicit construction in a discrete Hamiltonian model of an exact solution of the form $\exp(-|n|)$, i.e., a discrete peakon. These discrete analogs of the well-known, continuum peakons of the Camassa-Holm equation [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 71}, 1661 (1993)] are found in a model different from their continuum siblings. Namely, we observe discrete peakons in Klein-Gordon-type and nonlinear Schrödinger-type chains with long-range interactions. The interesting linear stability differences between these two chains are examined numerically and illustrated analytically. Additionally, inter-site centered peakons are also obtained in explicit form and their stability is studied. We also prove the global well-posedness for the discrete Klein-Gordon equation, show the instability of the peakon solution, and the possibility of a formation of a breathing peakon.

Polarobreathers in soft potentials

We consider polarons in models of coupled electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom, in the presence of a soft nonlinear inter-particle potential (Morse potential). In particular, we focus on a a bound state of a polaron with a breather, a so-called ``polarobreather''. We analyze the existence of this branch based on frequency resonance conditions and illustrate its stability using Floquet spectrum techniques. Multi-site solutions of this type are also obtained both in the stationary case (two-site polarons) and in the breathing case (two-site polarobreathers). We also obtain a different branch of solutions, namely a polaronic nanopteron.

Search for First-Generation Scalar Leptoquarks in $\bm{p \bar{p}}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV

We report on a search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks ($LQ$) in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 203 $pb^{-1}$ collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by the CDF experiment. We observe no evidence for $LQ$ production in the topologies arising from $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eqeq$ and $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eq νq$, and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the $LQ$ production cross section. %as a function of $β$, where $β$ is the branching fraction for $LQ \to eq$. The results are combined with those obtained from a separately reported CDF search in the topology arising from $LQ\bar{LQ} \to νq νq$ and 95% C.L. lower limits on the LQ mass as a function of $β= BR(LQ \to eq) $ are derived. The limits are 236, 205 and 145 GeV/c$^2$ for $β$ = 1, $β$ = 0.5 and $β$ = 0.1, respectively.

Breather Statics and Dynamics in Klein--Gordon Chains with a Bend

In this communication, we examine a nonlinear model with an impurity emulating a bend. We justify the geometric interpretation of the model and connect it with earlier work on models including geometric effects. We focus on both the bifurcation and stability analysis of the modes that emerge as a function of the strength of the bend angle, but we also examine dynamical effects including the scattering of mobile localized modes (discrete breathers) off of such a geometric structure. The potential outcomes of such numerical experiments (including transmission, trapping within the bend as well as reflection) are highlighted and qualitatively explained. Such models are of interest both theoretically in understanding the interplay of breathers with curvature, but also practically in simple models of photonic crystals or of bent chains of DNA.
