The Generalized Birman-Schwinger Principle

We prove a generalized Birman-Schwinger principle in the non-self-adjoint context. In particular, we provide a detailed discussion of geometric and algebraic multiplicities of eigenvalues of the basic operator of interest (e.g., a Schrödinger operator) and the associated Birman-Schwinger operator, and additionally offer a careful study of the associated Jordan chains of generalized eigenvectors of both operators. In the course of our analysis we also study algebraic and geometric multiplicities of zeros of strongly analytic operator-valued functions and the associated Jordan chains of generalized eigenvectors. We also relate algebraic multiplicities to the notion of the index of analytic operator-valued functions and derive a general Weinstein-Aronszajn formula for a pair of non-self-adjoint operators.

Antitonicity of the inverse for selfadjoint matrices, operators, and relations

Let $H_1$ and $H_2$ be selfadjoint operators or relations (multivalued operators) acting on a separable Hilbert space and assume that the inequality $H_1 \leq H_2$ holds. Then the validity of the inequalities $-H_1^{-1} \leq -H_2^{-1}$ and $H_2^{-1} \leq H_1^{-1}$ is characterized in terms of the inertia of $H_1$ and $H_2$. Such results are known for matrices and boundedly invertible operators. In the present paper those results are extended to selfadjoint, in general unbounded, not necessarily boundedly invertible, operators and, more generally, for selfadjoint relations in separable Hilbert spaces.

Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps on bounded Lipschitz domains

The Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to an elliptic partial differential equation becomes multivalued when the underlying Dirichlet problem is not uniquely solvable. The main objective of this paper is to present a systematic study of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map and its inverse, the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map, in the framework of linear relations in Hilbert spaces. Our treatment is inspired by abstract methods from extension theory of symmetric operators, utilizes the general theory of linear relations and makes use of some deep results on the regularity of the solutions of boundary value problems on bounded Lipschitz domains.
